I am a Florida State football fan. I became an Ed Reed supporter, after I watched him victimize FSU his last year, in Miami. Later, I found out Ed went to Miami as a running back, and took playing safety to where he did. His special teams play gives him an extra push. It may be recency bias, but I lean toward Ed Reed being the greatest safety, but by a slim margin. And, I was a Brady guy.

Sean Taylor was the best Safety I’ve ever seen play. The man was 2 drops away from picking off Favre 5 times in a single game. His very 1st play of his career was a pick 6. At the single high safety position he was making plays in the backfield. He had the coverage abilities of Reed and hit harder than Dawkins. Coming from a Bills fan, we will never see a safety as talented as Sean Taylor again.

Players like Ed Reed, Ray Lewis, Terrell Suggs, and Haloti Ngata, that’s the reason I became a Ravens fan as a teenager. Today’s defense feels like a new batch of that with Roquan, Hamilton, Humphrey, and Madabuike.
Ed Reed was a playmaker. There have historically been few playmakers on the D side of the ball. There have been many great defenders. Less of them have been playmakers.

Ed Reed was a complete football player with an Elite offensive and defensive mind. There will never be another player like that. He’s one of one so he’s definitely the GOAT at that safety position. I’d say it’s Ed, Ronnie then Troy. Sean Taylor had the potential to be top 3 at the position but he just didn’t play long enough due to unfortunate circumstances.
I would argue the 02 team was better but didn’t win the championship against Ohio state, pretty much up graded every position when that 01 team left which was crazy lol 😂
If you switched his Interception stats over his career into receptions and receiving yards/TD’s he has an arguably All-Pro Season. It’s a weird thing to think about, maybe we could have tried Ed on Offense a little more or at least let him stay as a Special Teamer longer.

A lot of the Patriots toughest games in those playoff runs were vs the Ravens. Sometimes the real Superbowl is played in the championship round. That was definitely the case a few of those years.
I know what you’re saying with “it depends on the scheme” as to who you take between Ed and Troy. But troy Polamalu never had 64 interceptions, he had half of that. 32, and In more seasons. That’s the biggest impact a safety can have on the game…. Outside of scoring. Troy polamalu had 5 touchdowns, Ed Reed had 14. Ed Reed blocked multiple punts, had 4x as many interception return yards as Troy, and returned a couple punts to the house as well. He also has the highest coverage grade of any safety according to PFF from 2006-2012. 94.9, just slightly better than Troy at 94.0. and while Troy was doing all that Ed was doing, and is viewed generally as a better tackler, Troy wasn’t taking kicks to the house and blocking punts to the extent Ed Reed was. And yes Troy was clutch, but so was Ed. He had many clutch moments like game winning int returns TDs vs the eagles and browns, and an AFC title game clinching interception Vs the Texans in the 4th quarter when the ravens won the superbowl in 2012. I’d take Ed Reed all day. And he could play close to the line too, ask dexter mccluster or the Washington redskins. He could blitz and wreak havoc too. All time best safety of that generation. Everyone relies on 2 high safety looks to avoid the big plays, and it almost looks lazy when the DC makes em sit in 2 high all day. If you had Ed Reed you would never have to call 2 high ever because he couldn't be fooled and was always in the right place at the right time. Trying not to take a shot at any players current or former, but Ed Reed is different.

Coverage ability of Ed Reed is a stretch. I loved watching both but Sean was a Tier below Ed coverage wise.
I think Reed transcended what a Safety was supposed to be. There was not and is not another Safety that did/does what he did period.

Troy was not only the best Saftey… he was a certified Punt returner if he ended up with an interception or picked up a fumble… could line up at linebacker and slide past top OL (or go over the top) play coverage at corner(or blitz untouched) Ed Reed isn’t a bum or anything! 👌🏼😆 he’s AMAZING! but Troy P? Ed Reed actually did return Punts for T.D's and Multiple block punts for T.D's plus interceptions for tds, forced fumbles. Ray Lewis and Ed Reed were defensive players who could make game savings plays and scoring T.D's while on defense to win games! 😅

Everyone relies on 2 high safety looks to avoid the big plays, and it almost looks lazy when the DC makes em sit in 2 high all day. If you had Ed Reed you would never have to call 2 high ever because he couldn't be fooled and was always in the right place at the right time. Trying not to take a shot at any players current or former, but Ed Reed is different.
