    My dad worked for Eastern from 50 to 59. This brings back so many memories flying out on Miami in DC 6s, Connies, and L44 Electra. Turning on takeoff zone and engine check. Then the power up and the jackrabbits would run. I knew at the time I was a lucky little kid. Got to co in the cockpit during flight, and my eyes were bigger than the instrument panel.

    Ahh! piston engine aircraft. What a treat to see this! I flew from Hawaii to San Diego on a military version of a DC-7. Was a long haul. Brings back memories. Nice video! Thanks for posting...

    Forgot to mention I was a P&W R-4360 mechanic in the Air Force. C-124 Globemasters. Those engines gave new meaning to the term High Maintenance.

      Just as fun: was listening to tower comms before Collings arrived there and their Messerschmitt Me-262 announced their intention to land. The tower replied back "You're in a WHAT???" Golden moment.

      Pilot and aviation manager here; This was actually thrown around between myself and some colleagues from school. We wondered if people would be willing to pay more, abide by dress codes (nothing excessive), and deal with longer flights of it meant exceptional 5 star service on classic comfort liners. Aircraft like the DC-6, L-1049A Constellation, Boeing 377 Strotocruiser, Boeing 314 Clipper Flying Boat, DC-3 and bring with them an experience and class of travel that we just don't have today, but they would be so expensive to maintain and operate today.

    Smoke @;17 sec is normal on startup, and every now and then you can get some flames, and even backfiring at times. At night on takeoff with full power you can see the flames torching behind the exhausts.

    Oh c'mon guys. Listen to the ambiguity between 01:48 and 02:05. The pilot flying is ASKING whether they have obtained the CRITICAL speeds. The pilot monitoring is calling those speeds in a drawn out call, to appease the pilot flying. Calls "V1" and "V2" should be clear, precise and accurate. What "sterile" cockpit? It has nothing to do with technology. It all has to do with professionalism.

  • @MyFabian94
    @MyFabian94 11 лет назад +1

    I love how the plane still has to accelerate just off the runway before it actually can start climbing.
    What is the V2 (MTOW) on the DC-7B (DC-4 wings+heavier than the DC-7) and how much runway does it need fully loaded?

    I know for a fact that that is a DIFFICULT takeoff for a DC-6B. heavy heavy aircraft and the climb was not so great.. this takeoff wouldve probably been impossible in a DC-7C. get up as fast as you can and make a break for the right and avoid the mountain at the end of the runway at all costs. these guys are fantastic pilots whoever they are. the old douglas' are lovely birds..

    Why is it older planes have a lower initial climb rate. It looks like they did gear up and skimmed the runway for another thousand yards. You wouldn't see this in an a320 - by the time it's gear up you're a thousand feet in the air already. Better wing design? thrust to weight?

Yeah well, At least I would be enjoying the ride back to poorsville. That's funny..I would be bumming money for a pack of smokes from my family in california as I'm cranking up my DC-3 to go get it. • @ChrissonatorOFL
      @ChrissonatorOFL 9 лет назад +1

      Jack Land Airbus isn't the only company that uses turbofan engines.
      Not to mention, you'd be hard-pressed to fly long distance and avoid turbofan aircraft.

    • @LordSandwichII
      @LordSandwichII 9 лет назад +1

      ***** I take it you haven't heard of Qantus flight 32? The engine exploded so hard that it sent shrapnel right through the wing! 0.0 The plane landed safely in the end and everyone was fine, but never let it be said that modern jet engines can't violently explode!
      Turbofans are overrated anyway! These old piston planes are much more fuel efficient and eco-friendly than most of today's jetliners!

    • @ChrissonatorOFL
      @ChrissonatorOFL 9 лет назад +1

      Lord Sandwich Yea, the cause was "fatigue cracking" in a stub pipe within the engine resulted in oil leakage followed by an oil fire in the engine.
      I doubt it. I'd have to know how much fuel these burn in relation to today's modern turbofan engines... not to mention, how much exhaust they put out... since most of the exhaust coming from a modern jet engine is just hot air... hence the term "high bypass."
      Even then, unless they can be converted to use something other than jet fuel, they're not likely to be more eco-friendly, since they're exploring the use of alternatives to jet fuel.
      The 2012 Boeing ecoDemonstrator airplane includes variable area fan nozzles, active engine vibration reduction, a regenerative fuel cell, and testing of flight trajectory optimization to enable more efficient routing for fuel savings.
