Lyrics:
When you're weary
Feeling small
When tears are in your eyes
I will dry them all
I'm on your side
When times get rough
And friends just can't be found
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down
When you're down and out
When you're on the street
When evening falls so hard
I will comfort you
I'll take your part
When darkness comes
And pain is all around
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down
Sail on Silver Girl,
Sail on by
Your time has come to shine
All your dreams are on their way
See how they shine
If you need a friend
I'm sailing right behind
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will ease your mind
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will ease your mind
Paul Simon was a song writing genius, but no-one brought his songs to life like Art Garfunkel. His voice is just sublime, and together they are bigger than the sum of their parts.
It is the combo that is the best
Amen!!!!
Awesome 👌
Así es. Nadie pudo describirlo mejor.
Have to disagree. Elvis took this song to heights these guys wanted to reach but couldn’t. Even Paul Simon said so.
Amazing, its 2024 and this song brings tears. At my high school graduation in 1970, this was our finale song and I was the pianist. That will go down in history for me as the most difficult piano piece I ever played. It took weeks and weeks of practice to bring the power of this song to fruition, but finally nailed it! Some where in a dusty old box, I still have the sheet music!!!
You ought to dig out that box and give this piece some new life!
I checked the comments to see if anyone confirmed that the piano player did indeed fumble the music a couple times. If this piece is as difficult as you say, then maybe he did.
But with Paul's artistic vision, maybe he wanted some odd timings thrown in, and maybe that's what I heard, but I don't think so.
Kudos! We had the sheet music in a big hardbound book of 60’s & 70’s music. This one was too hard for me! Sound of Silence was more my speed. Elton John’s music was usually too hard based on the # of sharps or flats. I was a hack but loved music then and now! P.S. Extra points for playing in public in front of classmates!
"Oh if you need a friend, I'm sailing right behind" is a phase/lyric that speaks to me alone, and to every one
That man still gives me goosebumps every time I hear him hit those last couple of notes. Art Garfunkel is definitely by far one of the all time best singers in the history of music! And Pauly ain't too bad himself. Lol
Yes, Paul can sing well and is certainly a top notch songwriter, but Art is the great singer, which Paul later admitted. Arts vocals on this song match it better than any other vocalist, be it Paul Simon, Aretha Franklin or even Elvis Presley.
Morten Harket version was the closest but Art owns this song especially with the last couple of notes he belts out.
Art Garfunkel is an incredible singer. He made this song.
And Paul Simon never forgave him for it.
No one can touch Art with this song, not even Paul. Art slayed this song.
I have said this before- Simon is a great song writer it it's Art Garfunkel who made Simon and Garfunkel
@@leonigolding9480i disagree Simon continued on as Art faded into the background.
❤🎉BOTH MAJE EACH OTHER!! They need each other!! TOGETHER THEY ARE AMAZING!!🤗🤗🥰🥰🤗🤗
Simon and Garfunkel are simply magical!
I ❤ this song
Art Garfunkel, voice of an angel man.
Beautiful voice. I love this man. Xxxx
Oh yes!!🤩
I was just sitting here thinking the same.
Love it so much
'Angel man' oneiromancy)
I don't understand everyone's comments about Paul singing on this song. Yes, Art did the vocals on the original, but this was the last song of a reunion special, and was highlighting their friendship and collaboration. It was beautiful and touching and great to see them performing together after so many years. Such an incredible and powerful conclusion!
Because it's obvious Paul is trying to "one up" Art. He appears to have little man syndrome, and has a hard time sharing the spot light
And isnt it that Paul Simon wrote it?
Paul Simon gave a different tone to the song. Light and dark before joining together In harmony for the final verse. Some songs just get better as the performers age and this performance is one of them. Guys in their twenties writing a song that chimes so clearly in their seventies. Amazing
You touched the point. Thats what musis is about❤ What a magical moment💛💚💙🩵💜🧡🩷❤️
The song is ma favorite
I was boarding my airplane to begin my trip back home at Phan Rang Air Force base in South Vietnam and Armed Forces Radio was playing this song and I was crying like a baby thinking of those I left behind and those who never made it home. That was in 1971. The years have gone by too fast.
Years you like a flash
Years go like a flash. Amazing
God bless you my dear for your service and God bless and r. i. p to all of those who didn't make it back home to their families. Xxx
@Dragon Phoenix69 Me saco el sombrero! que cosa mas grande que arriesgar su vida por la patria.
♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
i'm writing in 2023 and this video has again reached way inside me. It's incredible. i'm amazed by this sound.
Paul Simon wrote this song. But man! Garfunkel owns this.
It amazes me how Art can still move with all of Paul's nuances (new found ones at that) when they sing together. Doesn't even have to look at him for the feel. Whether they want to admit it or not, there is still a "chemistry" between them. Guess that comes from singing with each other since they were kids in 1953.
Beautiful dual harmony like no other in history.
It's exactly as you said. A misterious magic happen when they sing together, whether they would admit it or not. It's truly beautiful, and hope they treasure it in their hearts
Beautifully said!!
.
This song is one of the five greatest songs ever written and recorded!
What are the other four
Absolutely. I love Sound of Silence and I am a Rock as well
It's in my top five greatest songs ever written/recorded my list would be.
1. Better than I- David Campbell
2. Yesterday- The Beatles
3. Bridge Over Troubled Water- Simon and Garfunkel
4. If You Could Read My Mind- Gordon Lightfoot
5. Handle with Care- The Traveling Wilburys.
Who cares about his hair, he sings this one perfectly. What an amazing voice!
i know at times it was tough for paul to be off to the side watching the standing ovation art would get for this song as paul wrote it, but his decision to have art sing it solo was pure genius as there’s just nobody else who does it the way it deserves to be sung
My goodness, I remember this on 8 track cassette.
People here seem to blame Paul Simon for splitting up with Art but the reality was that Art had literally "gone Hollywood".
Art became involved in the movie business while Paul was still trying to make music in the studio. But because of how busy Art was, it became nearly impossible to produce an album under those conditions. So Paul Simon decided to just cut the crap and go on a solo career.
There is no question in my mind that this song is Paul Simon's masterpiece!
Fifty years, and it still brings tears. Paul Simon got a lot of glory, but Art, my God, he's the man.
June 28, 2024, Friday. Philippines. The bridge over troubled water in my life has been my wife of 57 years.
Art Garfunkel’s vocals, Paul Simon’s songwriting, excellent pianist = huge hit song lasting through the years
paul is such a gentleman ...poor Art couldnt pull it off at the end...still glad they corraborated..meh
Paul wrote a masterpiece and Art made those lyrics soar!! There will never be another duo like them!!
I love these two together. I don't think we can deny that Art really owns the vocals on this song for sure.
Art is just a better singer in every respect. Paul Simon is a hell of a songwriter. They feed off each other beautiful
This precious song kept me from attempting suicide when I at the age of 15 !!!! This song and Jesus !!! When I was totally deserted by my family !
A big WHY? I am here, and like a bridge over troubled water, i will never let u down!
Are u still there, my precious???
Jesus loves you for eternity. Just trust in Him and you’ll never be alone.
Thankful for this song and for your life.
How are you today, dear?
Unbelievable🥰... .. How spectacularly amazing to watch ONLY the music composer/ song writer Paul Simon, had the humility to allow his friend Art ... the only voice who could carry the song 'higher', stepped back and watched his (Paul's) lyrics under (Art's) voice carry the BEST finale to a song maybe EVER!! If ever a standing ovation , I believe maybe in the presence of God will there be anything equal
One of the greatest duos of all time. Great harmonies.
Bridge Over Troubled Water is still the very best of Simon and Garfunkel... The voice, lyrics, and harmonic melody hymn of the piano from start to finish are so superb... The last verse is like taking off from an airplane... your heart is pounding faster as you climb up into the sky... what a Glorious ending song.
They both have great voices but when they singer together in harmony the sum is greater than the parts.
Their voices blend so beautifully!!
Agreed! One of the most brilliant duets of all time.
Yep I agree but Art is the best one.
Absolutely! It's not debateable
Someday they will give their love ❤️ gift to God, because traveling underneath the bridge over troubled water is incomparable, dangerous ☔
Man I love these guys, Art is unreal even in this performance years later. Paul is amazing, very talented song writer.
It's my favorite song
shut it up people be gratefull we still have these 2 living legends. sit back and enjoy this performance. quit fighting like little kids.
Amen! Enjoy the song!

Is anyone also listening to this good classic during the quarantine - Covid 19 2020?🇧🇷🙏🏻 💚💛💙🤍
Yes, always loved this song, but seems even more evocative in these times!
I try to find something positive every day. In these days we are not allowed to travel a lot. But listen to this wonderful music ...it is like going on a little journey into the past and visite two old Friends.

I lost my mother in January this year. This is the song that was playing when she was in labor with me. Was always our song. I'm 50 now. Cried to this as she took her last breath. First time I've listened to it since. Cried my eyes out. BEAUTIFUL SONG!
Paul is such a great talent! Great lyrics and music and he sang it beautifully!
We Japanese grew up listening to this song. My friends and I learned English while listening to this song. I learned English words, idioms, grammar, and pronunciation from S and G. But time passes. Most Japanese people who were born in 1956 no longer study English. But I keep learning English just because I love Simon and Garfunkel. Their music is too beautiful for me to stop listening to. Like a bridge over troubled water, their beautiful voices always ease my troubled mind. My dream to improve my English is still on the way. Thanks a lot. I am grateful for "Bridge over Troubled Water".
I'm italian and i started learning english listening S&G ❤️
Replay the song in my mother's funeral the song was Jesus talking to her
There was not even a dry eye in the in the funeral
Everybody cried on that song
When they finally closed the casket
Loved how simon respected art's moment in this song. He did not infringe on a beautiful and personal moment here. True friend.
Seriously? Paul did not sing it straight. He was selfish and out of place.
@@nicknick1864 he always is in their more recent performances. It's like he has little man syndrome, and always has to "one up" Art
It’s Paul’s song lmao
@@michaelmaschmann5023so not how it works but sure
Paul Simon is great.........Art Garfunkle is fucking astonishing!!
What a combo!
*Garfunkel!
Paul Simon's singing has improved over the years and he does justice to this masterpiece that he wrote. I like them both sharing vocals on this as well.
I was going to say the same thing - Paul clearly took voice lessons. And he has control over his voice. I think he didn’t want to steal Artie’s thunder. Anyone who’s upset about this performance doesn’t realize the point was not to replicate the recording. The point was for them to perform together. Already had to have vocal fold surgery shortly after this performance. They didn’t know how things will turn out. So after having such a big split between them, they wanted to wear together and respect each other. So that actually was more important than even the quality of the performance. Both are important but they wanted the unity.
In his youthful years, Art sang beautifully without straining and had a strong voice.
More recent videos show him straining to hit the same notes or shorter notes. He compensates by dramatizing the final notes of Bridge.
Just my opinion.
See how they shine. Like a bridge over troubled water.
I was like 16 years old when I sang that song at a Party to my girlfriend. She died years ago in car crash. Every once in a while I listen to this song and I can't help crying like a small child. Still love her!
+Greta S Bo That is so freaking sad and unfair. I'm sad for your loss. May she rest in peace.
Let her beautiful memory be a bridge over troubled water for the rest of your life.
so sorry Greta to read if your terrible loss. I do hope your pain will ease 💝
Thanks so much for your answer. I keep thinking sometimes what could have been, but I have made my peace. She was a wonderful person.
Simon and Garfunkel really touches heart.
In countless hours of studio and live recordings I've never heard Art Garfunkel singing a note less than pitch-perfect
I love both these guys individually, but their harmony together is the best!
Art, with the voice of an angel.
Profound, in this performance’s beauty...and it’s meaning. May they always be there for each other when it counts most.
Hello Lisa
How are you doing today?
Yes may they be old friends on that park bench
Art has an amazing voice
I saw Paul Simon perform this song on his farewell tour this summer in Greensboro, NC with my daughter Caity, a Grad student at UNC. He totally owned it, and it was a beautiful performance. But after viewing this video I was stunned at how Art's phenomenal vocals complete this song. I know that Paul wrote it, and he performs it brilliantly on his farewell tour, but Art's phenomenal vocal quality makes this song one of the classiest and most wonderful songs ever recorded. It's unfortunate that they split, but this is a phenomenal reunion of a great writer and a great vocalist. I agree with many others, I love both of them.
You should have a look at the Concert in the Park and watch Art Garfunkel singing it there. Absolutely unbelievable. Genius to write it (Paul Simon) and genius to sing it (Art Garfunkel).
What a beautiful performance. I love the complete Gershwin prize show. Paul’s music is so great!
@Paul Simon ♪ 🤣🤣
# # # Thanks to S&G for this great song. I remember when this song first hit the radio waves in about 1969. I was 9 years old growing up in Bell Gardens, the ghetto of Los Angeles. I grew up poor, always moving. We had a hard life with a single mother. This song lifted me up and gave me comfort. I am writing some books about those days and years. Maybe it might be made into a movie someday? This song pretty much summarizes everything. It brings back many memories about a time and place. RIP mom. JR # # #
Después de más de 50 años cuando cantan en coro sigue siendo la mejor armonía vocal. El color de las voces atorciopeladas acarician los oídos. Además de la composición de Paul Simon es extraordinaria igual que The sound of silince.
As much as I love Paul, he should realise that his genius is recognised in Art's voice on this song
i think Pauls voice makes us realise how spectacular Art is ... just sayin
Uh I think he does realize that, which is why he had Artie sing it?
He ruined this live performance of the song. Art has the phenomenal angelic voice.
@Jim Brown The only thing that matters is what makes the crowd vibrate. Listen to the cheers when Art enters. This is another case of a genius songwriter who actually needed more his singer than he'd like to admit. Oh yeah sure, he still would have made tons of success and money. Like for example Sting in his solo carreer. Tons of money and success yeah sure, if that's your parameter. But for some strange reason, if Summers is not playing the guitar in message in a bottle, it just does nothing for me. Like here, the little gospel style that Simon tried in order to own his own song just desn't work.
tony banks Tony... the creator has the creed to do what he wants.. I would say Art tries to show he is the song...without Paul... Art who!
I grew up listening to this song since the early 1970’s. It was one of my mama’s favorite songs. This will always be one of my favorite songs. I don’t think anyone else could have sung this song as well as Art Garfunkel. Yes, Paul Simon has amazing songwriting talent but Art’s voice…
Oh Art Garfunkiel is most amazing.
What a great voice Art as got; l could listen to him 24 hours a day.
ikr
Yes Peter, you're right!
Paul Simon, an absolute genius: When Elvis covers one of your songs you have done everything right!
Because Elvis could only cover songs...not actually write them. Which is fine, as long as everyone knows that.
Beatiful music and wonderful performance! This was when Paul received the Gershwin price for his lifetime achievement and invited his friends and partners he had been working with to join him.
We played this at our wedding. Thank you Simon and Art for this masterpiece that my wife and I shared through 34 years of bliss until the angels came for her. I miss her so much. But I still have this to listen to.
Well, I was already blinking back tears when I got to this comment…and the waterworks began. ❤️
Keep on being happy, be cause you have been loved... It's the most extraordinary thing in life ;) Vive l'amour et la musique! Kisses from France
such beautiful voices that compliment each other… legends!
After listening to them for a long time without much realisation and when you finally realise how talented they are then you know you're getting older.
Not necessarily. Realised how talented they were when I was still in play school/ kindergarten, even though it was over ten years after they split up. Hearing great songs like this , at any age, was enough for me.
Art Garfunkel looks like that estranged uncle that once did some prison time and no one in the family really talks about it
And that is strange Uncle as you sow claim has more Talent than you'll ever have
@@mikebe41 ... nice try, drink another beer
Wow, Art Garfunkel was able to perform the ending about the same way he was able to over 2 decades ago back in 1982.
82 was 4 decades ago 😂 I know. Shocking!
Choosing who is better is patently absurd. They split up because at one point each one of them wanted to be better than the other, they became pointlessly competitive and now people are still ridiculously putting them in comparison. They were an amazing duo, one of the best ones I would say, and they complemented each other perfectly. Just imagine how many more "Bridge(s) Over Troubled Water" there would be now to delight our ears with, hadn't they split up...:( Love them both, they're both wonderful artists, I wish they still performed together
Trying to choose who is better is ridiculous. Simon and Garfunkle were so successful due to their collaborative talents. Paul Simon was the writing genius but Art Garfunkle clearly had the heavenly vocal that completed the magic. I guess you could say that Paul gets the most credit for writing it...but IMO if only Paul had sung his songs he would never have been as successful. Bottom line is it doesn't matter. I love them both!!!
I agree, it's the magic of the dynamic of the two talents combined that makes them so great. :)
Uh-huh. That's why Art Garfunkel went on to do nothing as a solo artist and Simon sold 16 million albums with Graceland.
Well said. Simon and Garfunkel as a pair are greater than the sum of their parts!

you Art for your "Heavenly Voice"

Everyone is praising Art’s vocals and rightly so, but I really do thing Paul Simon’s vocals are underrated - when he sings “pain is all around” it really resonates
For me, Simon approaches the 2nd verse almost lackadaisical in his improv over it. I wish Art did the 2nd verse for purity of their greatest song. He didn't even like the song when he wrote it, and insisted Art sing it. Art insisted on a 3rd verse and the ending that made the song it's perfect form. Paul hated Art's accolades afterward and felt overlooked having written it. Giving it to Art was the worst call of his career (but yet it's what made it sell millions). You can't have it both ways, Paul.
@@worldclassicguitaristsWhat are you talking about. Paul Simon said from the beginning he thought it was the best song he ever wrote. Even before they started arranging and recording it.

This version is not in a lower key than the original. It begins in the key of D and modulates to the key of E flat, the same key as the original version. Good job Artie.
Nope the original (studio) is in E flat (consistent with no changes). This is Deffo an D start and then goes INTO the original key mid way through.
I'm a beginning guitar studio. I leaned the song in D but realized the original song is Eb. Listening to the song U thought the songs sounded odd. Thanks for providing some insight.
