First time I heard this song was a fan made Suicune video for a Warhammer Faction “The Soldiers of Kreig” a spacefaring culture stuck in WW2 Germany culture, raised in a world of death and war, carried only by the devotion to their God, they believe their is no greater honor than to die in battle and so have no worries or sadness at the concept of dying and greet the battlefield with joy.
@@fist-of-doom487 Same here, then when I heard of the story it was behind, it led me here. Now I'm hooked on Sabaton and their music. Such an inspirational moment of history on when all odds are stacked against them, they used the last ounce of life they had to fight to the end. In memory of those soldiers who became a legend.
can you imagine what it must have been like for both sides at this battle? For the Germans...they're absolutely confident that there is nothing left to face them. They've just watched this...this cloud, this fog, this miasma settle over the enemy positions. They've watched the grass, the trees, the birds, everything living simply DIE as this cloud settles over it. And once it's cleared, they're advancing with 7000 men. the numbers giving them confidence, as is the lack of anything moving ahead of them. The silence, save for the tramp and jingle of 7000 men and their equipment, all muffled and suppressed by the gas masks they're wearing. And when they reach the enemy positions, all seems to be going well...until the first Russian soldier charges out. Seeing what essentially looks like a corpse staggering out, the skin pale, the eyes bloodshot, the cloth mask around their lower face red with blood as this figure lets out a scream of pain, anger, hatred. And then they're joined by others. A small number, but still a small number of enemies who should, by all accounts, be dead. And yet they're not. they're standing before them, still moving, still fighting, even as some of them hack up blood and tissue. They charge, screaming and firing their weapons. And in that moment, sheer terror grips the hearts of the Germans. Because these men can't be living, but they're fighting still. 7000 men, caught in absolute terror, fleeing from what they could only believe to be the corpses of their enemies coming to kill them. For the Russians...it has to be absolute terror for them when all this starts. They're a smaller force that has been stubbornly holding onto this position to give the main army a chance to retreat. They've been fighting for weeks on end to keep the enemy back. They're tired and hoping that soon they'll be able to withdraw as well, or that the enemy will finally fall back. And then this cloud of death rolls in. They're unable to do anything but wrap cloth around their faces because they have no gas masks. It does very little to help as their eyes and skin burns, as their bodies become wracked in agony, as they stumble through this fog, searching for any kind of relief. Most of them will die. For some, they'll survive. But this is not a blessing. Every moment is pure agony, trying to breathe, trying to move, trying to even think. They're hacking up parts of their own lungs and throats as they struggle to live. And then across the no-man's land comes a force of over 7000 soldiers. Imagine in that moment, the pain, the fear...but also the anger and hatred they must have felt. Here comes the soldiers who inflicted this on them. In that moment, there is nothing left to lose, and everything to gain, as those with enough strength charge out, firing their weapons, screaming all of their hatred and anger and pain at their enemies. The living dead, giving their last to drive the enemy back. This battle, I think, shows both the absolute horrors humanity can inflict upon each other...but also the strength and resolve of the human spirit, where even in the absolute worst adversity, can still find the strength to rise and overcome.
For Russians it was done for, nobody from the Osowiec fortress who didn't flee before the chemical gas actually has died... All of the soldiers there, well not all but like what 100-200 died 2 times that day... That bitter strenght and love for their homeland made them do the final push... They knew they were to die there on that battlefield, why not do it twice? That why I will always salute Russians and their bravery in all wars, from first till end of second, there's so much stories and their will to protect what's theirs its unreal, it's different nowadays but old ussr/russia was the shit man...
It's kinda scary to think about how this must've looked like. A literal army of German soldiers advancing at the fortress and out of nowhere soldiers get mowed down left and right by Russian machine guns, like 100 half dead Russian soldiers rise from their trenches, spitting blood and parts of their lungs, red eyes, bloody tears just charging at these 7000 or so German soldiers. Honestly can't blame them for throwing their rifles away just running away, stepping over each other, running into their own barbed wire. Just pure panic.
It's worth remembering. Those Germans thought the dead were litterally rising from the earth to drag them to hell as revenge for killing them with gas. Yeah, fuck that, the hardest men would turn back and run when facing that.
This story reminds me of the battle of Kajmakcalan where the Bulgarians were shocked to see the Serbian flag waving in the wind as they thought they were all dead and that the Serbian army didn't survive the retreat through Albania. It was a very tough battle but eventually the Serbs captured the mountain top and that became the first liberated part of Serbia after 1916.
To be fair, it was the reserves that had advanced to hold the line, they hadn’t gotten as much gas but it still terrified the Germans and cost them the battle
I love how during the guitar solo they have this little history lesson, which ends in the words "some countries still stockpile chemical weapons", and right after that the song continues with "and that's when the dead men are marching again". Powerful message there.
This inspired a bit of world-building in my D&D universe of Soma. A group of gnolls attacked a fortress at a strategic point known as the White Pass by burning a toxic tree called boilwood, then enlisting a druid to redirect the winds and blow the smoke into the fortress. If you're familiar with what happens when you burn plants like machineel or poison ivy, you can see how horrible this would be. However, they were not anticipating the presence of a cleric of Maurn, the god of militiamen, conscripts, veterans, and war dead. With the last of his strength, he prayed to his god that his men would last just long enough for relief to arrive. And when the gnolls breached the fortress, they were met not with dead and dying soldiers, but revenants dead-set on protecting the valley beyond the fortress, shrugging off the fact that their skin was literally blistering off their bodies. Most of the gnoll tribe retreated in terror, while the chieftan, a proud berserker, fought viciously, until he was finally dragged down and decapitated. And three days later, relief arrived to find the garrison in full dress uniform, with regulation graves already dug. They handed over the log book for the fortress, gave a final salute, and all collapsed dead on the spot.

My great great grandad was actually in the attack of the dead he was Ukrainian in the Russian empire and survived the gas a week after he survived the attack he died from lung disease
Osowiec is in Poland today. You're right. But this story shows the Russian truth. And that is a mistake. The attack of the dead men was led by a Pole, Second Lieutenant Władysław Strzemliński. Russian commander Kotlinski was mortally wounded. This is true. According to the entries in the diaries of the 226th Ziemlasnki Infantry Regiment, which recaptured the trenches of the Sośnieńska advanced position after an unexpected German gas attack. At a key moment, Second Lieutenant Strzeminski was to take over command of the entire counterattack from the mortally wounded Second Lieutenant Władimir Kotliński. This attack is still alive in Russian historiography and pop culture today - it is called the attack of the dead. Strzemiński lost an eye and a leg. For his services on the battlefield, he received the Order of Saint George, 4th class and the Order of Saint Stanislaus, 3rd class. After World War II, Polish communists finished him off. He was a painter. It was he who created the trend in painting called unionism. Glory to the heroes. Strzemlinski's life under the dictatorship of the communists was shown in the Polish film "Powidoki".... "Afterimages"
I had the funniest experience watching this video while watching the small screen I suddenly looked up at you only to realise my head and yours were bobbing in sync.
Fun little fact. The antidote for Chlorine gas is salamonac. (sp?) The closests thing most troops had was their own piss, so they would have to keep drinking whatever they could and keep soaking a rag to cover their faces.
Oh no... I can't unsee it... I've only just noticed that the video (and this is the offical lyrics video, it's not a fan vid) misspells the word "lead" (as in the metal) as "led".
I recommend the winged hussars and uprising by them. Uprising is about how Poland got forgotten during ww2 and they had to fight for themselves I guess in an uprising.
The last battle is a perfect fusion of patriotism, and beauty from sabaton, even if you don't post a reaction, absolutely listen to it on your free time
if you haven't already checked her out, flor Jansen is the wife of the lead singer, and she is every ounce the talent he is. I think she is the lead singer of Nightwish as well.
They used what is called mustard gas in WWI, which turned into a form of acid when it came into contact with water, now this isn't as big of a problem when it touches skin, causing minor rashes, small blisters, and irritation to the skin do to condensation and water vapor in the air, but the human body is 75% water, and when you breath in mustard gas, well, you can imagine it doesn't go well, seeing when you breath it in, you basically are inhaling acid at that point, and it basically melts your lungs and other organs, it also will damage and melt a person's eyes, hence why gas masks from that era were built that way, and also why the russian soldiers looked the way they did when coming at the germans, they should be dead, but they used cloth, which helped filter enough of the gas out so that they could survive the gas long enough to at least push the germans back
Excerpt about the effects of chlorine gas (the chemical weapon used on the Osowiec fortress) from "Medical Diseases of the War" by Arthur Hurst: "The first effect of inhalation of chlorine is a burning pain in the throat and eyes, accompanied by a sensation of suffocation; pain, which may be severe, is felt in the chest, especially behind the sternum. Respiration becomes painful, rapid, and difficult ; coughing occurs, and the irritation of the eyes results in profuse lachrymation. Retching is common and may be followed by vomiting, which gives temporary relief. The lips and mouth are parched and the tongue is covered with a thick dry fur. Severe headache rapidly follows with a feeling of great weakness in the legs; if the patient gives way to this and lies down, he is likely to inhale still more chlorine, as the heavy gas is most concentrated near the ground. In severe poisoning unconsciousness follows; nothing more is known about the cases which prove fatal on the field within the first few hours of the "gassing," except that the face assumes a pale greenish yellow colour. When a man lives long enough to be admitted into a clearing station, he is conscious, but restless; his face is violet red, and his ears and finger nails blue ; his expression strained and anxious as he gasps for breath; he tries to get relief by sitting up with his head thrown back, or he lies in an exhausted condition, sometimes on his side with his head over the edge of the stretcher in order to help the escape of fluid from the lungs. His skin is cold and his temperature subnormal; the pulse is full and rarely over 100. Respiration is jerky, shallow and rapid, the rate being often over 40 and sometimes even 80 a minute ; all the auxiliary muscles come into play, the chest being over-distended at the height of inspiration and, as in asthma, only slightly less distended in extreme expiration. Frequent and painful coughing occurs and some frothy sputum is brought up. The lungs are less resonant than normal, but not actually dull, and fine riles with occasional rhonchi and harsh but not bronchial breathing are heard, especially over the back and sides."
The "tongue is covered with a thick dry fur" probably refers to the filiform papillae lengthening, or something equivalent, see for example "Black hairy tongue syndrome" (BHT). So while it sounds strange, there are medical conditions that can give the tongue a fur-like appearance.
The first time I heard this song, I thought it was good, but probably my least favorite song on the album. It has grown on me, and hearing it again now, I absolutely love it.
As ai writ in previous Sabaton reaction, if you are a patriot as i listen you said many times, and liked this style, you MUST react to "To hell and back" and "82 all the way", first one tells the storie of Audie Murphy, the most decorated US soldier in WW2. Second one its an homage to USA Sergeant Alvin York, an USA soldier from WWI, also both are terrific power metal songs!!
Sabaton is a history lesson done to metal lmao this song was actually about a world war 1 battle between Russians and Germans, the Germans shelled the Russians with gas and killed over half the garrison at a rail station, I believe it was. The Germans started advancing but the gas hadn’t reached the back lines yet and the survivors came forward and the Germans thought they had all died so they were horrified when they saw the Russians holding the line and it actually lost them the battle.
When you realize you are dying, no hope for your own survival… rise and see how many you can take with you

Спасибо за реакцию!
Sabbaton are amazing and superb live. They are huge fans of history and love to write about battles or hero's. They are glorious
I've referred to Sabaton as Bards before. They sing songs that tell stories of heroes and villains.
Their support came through, but these dying people just went along with the attack.....Heroes .
the song is based on real events. we don't forget...
as it should be, it speaks to the constitution and determination of the russian people, an incredible feat. let it never be forgotten.
This song and the last stand are amazing! Motivating story and beat..
This is one of the most extreme cases of combat discipline I've ever read about
That song is in my top 10 favorites from sabaton, maybe even top 5
Fun little fact. The antidote for Chlorine gas is salamonac. (sp?) The closests thing most troops had was their own piss, so they would have to keep drinking whatever they could and keep soaking a rag to cover their faces.
Oh no... I can't unsee it... I've only just noticed that the video (and this is the offical lyrics video, it's not a fan vid) misspells the word "lead" (as in the metal) as "led".
I hope these hero being documentary in movie, world must know how marvelous they are. Rest in peace for all the patriots who fight for their rights!
I recommend the winged hussars and uprising by them. Uprising is about how Poland got forgotten during ww2 and they had to fight for themselves I guess in an uprising.
In Russia " Do or die" sounds like "Even die but do"
Die but do
Die again is a horrifying phrase.
yeah this guy knows his stuff !
The last battle is a perfect fusion of patriotism, and beauty from sabaton, even if you don't post a reaction, absolutely listen to it on your free time
the achievement has been received you have called the Russians
if you haven't already checked her out, flor Jansen is the wife of the lead singer, and she is every ounce the talent he is. I think she is the lead singer of Nightwish as well.
They used what is called mustard gas in WWI, which turned into a form of acid when it came into contact with water, now this isn't as big of a problem when it touches skin, causing minor rashes, small blisters, and irritation to the skin do to condensation and water vapor in the air, but the human body is 75% water, and when you breath in mustard gas, well, you can imagine it doesn't go well, seeing when you breath it in, you basically are inhaling acid at that point, and it basically melts your lungs and other organs, it also will damage and melt a person's eyes, hence why gas masks from that era were built that way, and also why the russian soldiers looked the way they did when coming at the germans, they should be dead, but they used cloth, which helped filter enough of the gas out so that they could survive the gas long enough to at least push the germans back
Здравствуйте, спасибо большое за правду о России о моем народе, о музыке, рассказе достоверных событиях в истории.
The live action music video is amazing
Excerpt about the effects of chlorine gas (the chemical weapon used on the Osowiec fortress) from "Medical Diseases of the War" by Arthur Hurst:
"The first effect of inhalation of chlorine is a burning pain in the throat and eyes, accompanied by a sensation of suffocation; pain, which may be severe, is felt in the chest, especially behind the sternum.
I advise you to watch a cover of these songs from Radio Tapok !! On this guy Sabaton themselves made a cover(battle for Moscow). You should love it!!
Чел ну ты топовый надеюсь будешь продолжать в том же духе
82nd all the way next!
great reaction buddy
"Breath taking"
Iiterally.
You definitely need to do more Sabaton. The history lessons are wild. Lol
"Breathtaking" -MrLboyd as he listens to a song about men dying of gas attacks...
The ideas of that attack was that they knew they are dead anyway. What is dead can’t die
Once you understand Osowiec , Stalingrad makes sense.
The first time I heard this song, I thought it was good, but probably my least favorite song on the album. It has grown on me, and hearing it again now, I absolutely love it.
Solo guitar amazing!)) Yes?)
You should check their song Bismarck. It is legendary and the video is like a history movie :D
I'm recommending you to hear some russian covers of Sabaton
They're kinda good
This is my first time listening to this song
You have GOT to listen to "Night Witches"
Sabaton is like a history teacher who punches the information with 140bpm in your head \m/
To great to see a detailed reaction on this, my preferred music, real hard to find these days
My favorite heavy metal historians!!!! 82nd all the way is their best!!!
Everybody's gangster until the shambling, half dead people come for them.
Yes it is
Sabaton is a history lesson done to metal lmao this song was actually about a world war 1 battle between Russians and Germans, the Germans shelled the Russians with gas and killed over half the garrison at a rail station, I believe it was. The Germans started advancing but the gas hadn’t reached the back lines yet and the survivors came forward and the Germans thought they had all died so they were horrified when they saw the Russians holding the line and it actually lost them the battle.
Sabaton is SO good. I shall once again comment: PLEASE react to 40:1 and Panzerkampf.
