Guy had major royal privelege, he must have been somewhat of a raging megalomaniac considering how he behaved durring his exile in Turkey. In his young days he would party hard. Apparantly he quit drinking after a night were him and his friends got a bear so drunk it fell out of a castle window and died.

By the time he turned 18 he won one of Swedens biggest victories in history, the battle of Narva. 10500 swedes vs almost 40000 russians. And they won.
Always at the front, dressed in a simple soldiers uniform, fighting where the battle was thickest shoulder to shoulder with his men. He never said "go there" he said "follow me"

    • @nobblicker5968

They not only won that battle, they utterly crushed their enemies at that battle.
Through the sheer shock of the first assault from Charles XII's army the Russian army tried to flee over the ice cold river sorrounding the city, but the bridges couldn't support the weight of all the soldiers.
So the battle ended with almost 10K dead russian compared to 600 dead swedes resulting in a 1:20 death ratio and a chrushing defeat for the Russians.

You should also react to the Swedish version: the Swedish version is actually done slightly differently and the lyrics change to reflect the change in perspective (English vs Swedish perspective specifically). The tone is brighter and implies a more positive opinion and view of King Charles whereas the English version is darker and more menacing, almost as though from the English's view

A Lifetime of War is the broad scope of the war, how monarchs send off their people to die for them year after year.
Em Livstid i Krig is an individual Swedish soldier realizing there is no glory. They went from their family at a young age and saw what war was like. It talks about how it can destroy someone, and though they give their life no one misses them or will remember their own death. Very, very powerful.

The song is expressing the mentality of absolute monarchy. Like many other monarchs, Charles held absolute power, which means that no one stands over the king but God. Not all countries had this system or it was different during different periods of time. This song is Sabaton's way of expressing the mentality of that system, along with the Great Northern war that occurred during Charles' reign in which he got a great reputation all around Europe as a warrior and strategist. He is known for that, so...

Yes, the man in the painting is Carolus, that painting is actually located about 35 miles from where I'm at :), I've probably looked at it IRL back in the late 70's. Rex is the latin word for king, and Carolus is supposed to be the medieval Latin form of Charles.
Some tracks I can recommend from Sabaton...
The Lion from the north (About Gustav Adolf, another Swedish king just prior to Carolus, from the same album)
Resist and Bite (Dutch 40 soldiers holding the border against an overwhelming german attack)
Far From Fame (About Karel Janoušek, a Czechoslovakian soldier, Joakim has Czech ancestry)

The narrative of "god's chosen" specifically refers to how Carolus Rex, Charles XII, subverted the power of the church by, during his coronation, placing the crown upon his own head - crowning himself. He was thus not bestowed the protection of god through the decree of the church, as was the norm at that time, but by his own hand: severing the line of God -> Church -> King and instead creating a rulership that, ostensibly, was vested by the power of god directly.

He was such a great king. He defended Sweden against a coalition of Denmark-Norway, Russia, Poland-Lithuania, Prussia and Saxony. He defeated the Russians army at 40 000 at Narva with his 10 000. Then later went on to Krakow and defeated Poland-Lithuania with 8 000 troops. He marched on Russia in the winter and won battle after battle. It was then they began using scorched earth tactics and it worked, even so he still marched on and eventully got beaten at the battle of Poltava. Still was a pretty even battle but Sweden lost almost all of our troops and we have never had a huge population so we couldn't replace the ones we lost and Russia took over as the big power in northern europe. But do understand that it was at such a time when Sweden with its relatively small population could stand up to Russia one on one. So it's really impressive Charles XII did what he did and defended Swedens borders against a far larger force.

  • @p75369
    @p75369 3 года назад +11

"He'd won a lot of battle" Not yet (by the song) he hadn't, this is about his coronation, when he was 15. All he had done was being born to the prior king... and that was all he needed. "Crowned by God not by the church" :- the monarch rules by divine mandate, he and his bloodline were put upon the earth with the sole intention to rule, no one, not even the church, can deny him his throne.

He was called Carolus(Karl in latin) Rex(The reigning king), when the former king died and Karl XII was to become king the enemies of Sweden were licking their lips of joy, expecting to easily take over Country pretty much because he was only 15 years old (which is what he sings in the song. they thought I was too young to rule the land)
What they had not expected was for him to be a masterful and fearless strategist.. he had been studying war strategy and tactics since a very young age

Sabaton has a lot of cool songs and the historical themes make it a learning experience without you even knowing it. Songs like the "Night Witches" (All women Russian Bomber Squadron WW2), The Last Stand (1527 Defense of the Pope) and "Ghost in the TRenches" (WWi Canadian legend Francis Pegahmagabow) are some of my favorites. They even have one based on the Nazgul in Lord of the Rings - "Shadow"

(Just a sidenote: In Spanish, yes, you're right. In English it's "Charles" and in Swedish it's "Karl". Carolus is Latin; "Carolus Rex" simply means "King Charles".)

Cool part of his story is that he was crowned at only 15 years old hence the line “they thought I was too young to rule the land”

    • @BerishStarr

Yes! he also refused to be crowned as the tradition said, by the church. He placed the crown on his own head outside the church. Then march in and declared himself king. At age 15 xD

Not sure if others posted this (almost certainly), but Sabaton is pronounced sa-bat-on. Sa like in "SAt dawn", bat like the baseball variety and on like ... well on top of something. Stress on the first A. It refers to a medieval piece of plated foot armour - basically a knights shoe/shoe-cover.

Id heavily recommend, if you haven't already, listen to "Carolus Rex" in Sabatons native Swedish. The songs beat and flow synergizes heavily to Swedish more than it does to English.

Im a Swede and i gotta say that Charles the 12 gave us enormous groujds to stand on by taxes and by making sure his father conscription service stood firm also many of the economics in sweden today are based on his foresight even when he basically was exiled from home.

Charles is the English version of his name, Carolus being the actual name (or sometimes just Carl).. Just like in Finnish we changed King "George" to "Yrjö" (TBH, they don't even sound the same phonetically)
