Galadriel really stood out on that flyby. The eyes look ridiculous, would get them repainted as being closed or anything except that crazy clown face. Rest of the thing looks stellar, really nice.
Love my copy! Sluggish painting have been corrected with simple washes. Took one weekend to complete the whole set. And love the game, it's just so rich and tense! Thanks for the unboxing video Drakkenstrike!
All the people complaining about the quality of the minis paint job are simply sour people. I mean, you get what you pay for. And for the original price, those minis are definitely on par! ... Consider that perhaps $325 of the original $400 price is for the minis. Divide $325 by 249 minis and that's only $1.30 per mini. And you guys are whining that a $1.30 retail paint job isn't good enough? Give me a break. The level of quality that you guys are expecting (which I totally agree there is room to achieve), would require at least asking $3 per mini. Can anyone argue with that? Or, ask yourself, that given the superior paint job that YOU can do on EACH of 249 minis, how much would YOU charge for each? I'd surmise that you will demand at LEAST $3 for each. Either that, or you value your time and talent to be worth nothing. ... So if the minis WERE better painted, then the price of the edition now becomes $3 x 249 = $747, plus $75 for the rest of the box = $822. So what you guys are complaining about is that you'd rather pay $822 (more than double the original price) for the game so to get a better quality paint job on the minis. ... Otherwise if you're NOT willing to pay double, then stop your bitching.
Good points, but I think if they couldn't get a consistent quality why bother at all. Just cast the pieces in a better material, like a better plastic or metal and skip the painting. Or give them basic levels of colour and don't do the scary eyes if you don't have staff skilled enough to get what the product deserves. The rest of the game looks so beautifully done, it's ruined by the poor quality of the miniatures paint job.
Still have an unopened copy of this game. want to play it so badly but may end up buying the normal one and saving this for posterity. And yes some not all the minis are painted poorly but you know what a day or two with some Vallejo paint and some GW washes and your good to go, not that hard. This game is probably valued now at £1500 without improving the paint job, who knows what it will be worth in 10 or 20 years? The Tolkien franchise very rarely drops in value if at all ;o)
Are the minis plastic? I'm glad I don't have as critical an eye as most commenting here. I think these look great other than Galadriel's deer in the headlights face. As far as comparing these to Games Work Shop it would probably cost you THOUSANDS of dollars to swap out all the figures in this game. Not to mention the time you'll have to spend assembling them and painting them yourself. NO COMPARISON. For the price of $400, this can't be beat. Now that the 2nd edition of the collector's edition is coming out in the next month or so there will be more reasonable prices on the second hand market. If not I'll wait for the third edition.
Seems like a nice game but those miniatures are not well painted. Actually, the paintjob is awful. If I had bought that game, opened the box and seen that lousy paintjob I would have been really disapointed.
It's a two player game. One person plays the free people and the other person plays the shadow, The free peoples can win by mobilizing their armies and taking control of shadow strongholds Each stronghold had a point number next to them. The free peoples need 4 points to win. The shadow needs 10 points to win. The other way to win has to do with the fellowship. Every round the two players roll dice to determine what they can do. If the shadow rolls any dice with an eye on them they immediately go to a hunt for the ring box. The number of dice in there represents how many dice the shadow rolls to find the fellowship when they move. Each time the fellowship moves in a round it gets easier to find. Basically the free people want to drop the ring into mount doom and win the game immediately. Winning by victory points you have to wait until the round ends. The shadow can also win by corrupting the fellowship 12 points.
the miniatures look awful...the sculpting seems low quality. I understand the game is old but you'd think the anniversary edition would improve the quality. Instead they made Galadriel look like Beyonce on a bad day
Or just cast in a better material and not painted at all. By GW quality I assume you mean by the Eavy Metal team, which as many people here have rightly said, would cost you thousands, if not tens of thousands of dollars. Most Chinese factories don't have the skills or the time to make vast amounts of miniatures (that look like they weren't great casts in the first place - wonky spears and all!) look as good as the miniatures that GW put on show. It's a shame, because the rest of the game is so beatiful.
for this price, and the mark of LoTR alone, the minis are a tragedy. i wont even comment sluggish paint job but come on, they're not even half way close to GW minis. seriously, the figurines are what makes this game. they're just plain bad.
The painting is good, but look at Galadriel (12:36) xxD Seriously? :D
Good?
ahahahaha, thanks for that :D

I agree that Giladriel looks terrible; here is my paint:

Maybe it is Galadriel from Amazon 😂

Here is my paint; its quite a task to do them all:

Congrats for having hands on these
That is a thing of beauty thanks for sharing it with us.
Amazing. I'd love to play a game using this set.
wow who knew such an edition existed. great job
Nice, good to see in HD, thanks!
Wonderful review. What a beautiful game.
Got the Anniversary Release this week. Happiness!
I'm saddened that the new Anniversary Edition doesn't have a box like that.
Just because someone doesn't agree that this is the best game with the best components of all time doesn't make them a hater. It makes you a fanboy.

Wow. Did the painters ever hear of applying a wash? Tragic painting for such an expensive thing.
Are the minis plastic? I'm glad I don't have as critical an eye as most commenting here. I think these look great other than Galadriel's deer in the headlights face.

Since when were there siege engines and catapults. are they exclusive?
They are from the expansion, which is included
is that board the same as the normal 2nd edition board, or is the collectors edition a different (larger) board?
Its larger
Does it come that poorly painted or did you decide it needed so colour?
looks great but now its 3,500 bucks on amazon. i would expect faaaaar better paint jobs for such a crazy price.
Pagan Minn wasn't originally sold for that price, it's inflated due to rarity and collectability
Jeesus they sure did Galadriel dirty xD
I agree about the paint jobs ... A bit amateur. Charging way too much for that paint job level.
Might be a tad more difficult to find for $400 now :/
WHat do you do for a living dude? I mean this is extremely expensive.
I'll probably sound like an idiot but what's "GW" mean?
War of the Ring, Collector’s Edition: $4,599.00, Ebay, July 13, 2021. !!!
catapults and siege towers
now thats a spoiler
Thanks!
I apologize for my vagueness, GW or Games Workshop the guys that made the LotR & Warhammer miniatures
My painted minis look 10x better.. and I don't consider myself a very painter!
Siege engines?? what.? how..?
I would just make my own, like I could do a better paint job
North of 2,000 dollars on Ebay... This vexes me greatly.
Galadriel looks terrible. Why is Gandalf and Saruman yellow?
WANT!!!
these minis look like they were painted at a thai sweat shop.
I can see the collector value in this but quality? LOL
Seems like a nice game but those miniatures are not well painted. Actually, the paintjob is awful. If I had bought that game, opened the box and seen that lousy paintjob I would have been really disapointed.
I did better than that on my very first attempt at painting minis
wow
Looks like risk to me but Middle Earth style.
Clee4000 Oh god this is so much more then risk. It isn't just a take over as much as middle earth as possible,

How do you win?
Is it like war hammer board game or something. Where you recreate the battle and fight each other.
It's a two player game. Interesting game

For that price, the minis should have at least been GW quality. Fail.

how much did this cost? cause the miniatures and artwork are REALLY poor
ill just stick with gamesworkshop lord of the rings
$400 for sweat-shop paint jobs? No thanks!
wow .. minis looks like shit...
2k and you get paperboard token , ROFL
wow i wanted this but then i just saw how badly painted they are. Absolutley shocking!
@RandomExta LOL
Seriously i could paint better than this.
The eyes look terrible
