- Imagine a secret boat parts treasure house that had every boat part, every boat item, you ever needed to not only build your pocket trawler but restore your free classic fiberglass sailboat. Just outside Detroit Michigan in Harrison Township is Marine Sales & Repair Inc., and the oldest and one of the few remaining boat junkmen. His name is Earl “the Pearl” Stilson and he sells boat parts. From old Chris Craft parts, to vintage Hercules diesel engines, to teak handrails, and bronze fittings, Earl has every hard to find antique boat part. Erl is a real “Gem.” If you ever dreamed of owning a used boat parts shop this is real boat motivation for any amateur boat builder or boat restorer.
Welcome to my boat building channel! This is my trawler restoration of an Albin 27 pocket trawler. Every couple of weeks I post a boat building or boat repair video to document various boat projects, sailboat restorations, or boat repairs.

Earl is a remarkable person.
He’s a Gem 💎 😁
Earl the Pearl is clearly a Gem. A humble, knowledgeable, funny and generous human being. As a Boomer your video story with Earl made my day. Thank you for the effort, and thank you Earl for sharing your life and business with us.
😀
Wow ! What a generous man. Earl has made some money and then given it to others , what a nice man. Also think about how much time was involved in scraping all those boats- and then inventorying it! I know because I have scraped a few my self. Great life. I hope some one will take it over some day that is up to the challenge and legacy.
I think about it every day 😁
What a treasure this place is and most of all the man that created it. We must preserve this place and the legacy.
Thanks for the comment 😁👍
As a boater/boat owner, thanks Earl! WIsh I lived closer to Marine Sales & Repair. It looks like a place where you could spend hours looking.
Brian when I visit Earl’s shop it’s like I fall into a black hole where time no
longer matters….😂😁
It's a great place to work at Earl the pearl shop on some days great video......
It was great to meet you Scott! See you again soon
That is amazing. There are very few treasures like that left. Developed by human hard work and run by sharp human minds and decades of experience. I hope whoever buys it will keep the character of it.
Thanks Charles
What a maritime wonderland! Thanks for sharing this.
Glad you enjoyed it. Welcome aboard 😁
Hi Joe, I'm fascinated to see Earll the Pearl's shop. Wish I knew about him during the build. I would have traveled to his place to buy all I needed in one place. Looks like a lovely man.
Good to hear from you Damian. I was thinking about your build the whole time I was walking the isles. Perfect for your project 👍
Wow, Earl the Pearl! amazing video. I remember walking the isles with my father in my childhood! Thanks for the video and memories! It’s my old stomping grounds, I grew up on Lake, St. Clair / Anchor Bay!
Welcome aboard Kurt! Glad you enjoyed it
Great store, Earl!
😁👍
Great video, could tell how much you were like a kid in a candy store. Excellent conversations and information about a very knowledgeable and caring man.
One of my favorite episodes. Such a great time
Absolutely going to have to get in touch with Earl the pearl
👍😁👍
Earl you are now on my radar for parts.
You’re gonna love it Doug 😎
My father always called this place 'Earl the Pearl'.
👍
Awesome
Thank you 😊
I was just in Detroit memorial day weekend and if I would've saw this video, I would've definitely stop by Earl's shop. Kind of disappointing that I missed out.
🙁
Wow that's a great shop and Earl is a fantastic person. I could use the load for my boat parts right now. Unfortunately there is no shop for these parts in the southwest of Germany far and wide. A heavenly place for every boat builder.🙂🙂
Welcome Aboard Silvester! Be sure to subscribe. I feel your pain. I find myself searching antique shops when traveling abroad, but it is difficult unless your close to the water. Go where the commercial fishermen are, but even then it can be challenging to find what you need.
@@motorcityboatwerks Hey, thanks for your answer. Yes, I live near Switzerland and there are more mountains than sea. Old Mercruiser parts are particularly difficult to find here. Transom bolts and screws for MC/MR-1 no chance to find.
Your trawler is really very beautiful. I have an old Birchwood 25ft
👍Birchwood 25 perfect for mountain lakes 😁
@@motorcityboatwerks Yes perfect or french and german rivers🙂
👌
truly amazing.
Thanks Larry
Earl 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

Nice story
👍😁
Want to thank you for this video. I'm in the northern Virginia area, have a 1989 Chapparal. Carling rocker switch went bad for cabin lights, spent many days and phone calls trying to find a 4 prong Carling switch to replace the existing. Matching the style wasn't extremely important but wanted to come close. Contacted Chaparral and they informed me they used Carling switches but didn't know where I could locate a replacement. Contacted local Carling rep in PA., he gave me the switch serial # and some leads on suppliers. All suppliers were out of stock except one, they had 72, but required I purchase a minimum of 10 switches. A couple suppliers had them on back order with possible delivery in September/October. Happened on your video so thought I'd give them a try, called, Annette answered the phone, told her what I need, she said they had a lot of rocker switches and could I send her some pictures. Couple hours later she sends me a picture, exact switch. Gave my CC info, she dropped it in the mail and I had it a couple days later! Great place and I'm going to spread their name around
Awesome! 😎 Makes me so happy ! Be sure to subscribe and spread the word

I'd be interested in how he scraps boats. You get some nice hardware and parts, but then he's stuck with a hull that needs to be chopped up and discarded. He didn't do all that by himself, did he? Not easy.
You grind up the hull and send it the be landfill 😉
I used to go to Minnie's Chandlery in Newport Beach CA when I lived out there, so much stuff. Now I transport boats outta NC, and we have tons of used stuff I sell, but only at 50% or less. It's a tough racket.
I thought you said Minnie’s Haberdashery-LOL 😁
fantastic
