If you have a corset made for you by someone who knows what they are doing then they're really comfortable. This video should be entitled "actors who were let down by their costume departments and lack of preparation for tight lacing" because really that's what's happening here.
@@PeacefulSlumber may ask where you got yours from, I don’t have any at the moment and am looking into where to get a good one that going to be comfortable
Sigh. Corsets should never be painful. I have been wearing one for the last twelve hours - no pain. If they are the correct size for your body, you should not be in pain.
True but it also depends how tight you have it, because your stomach shouldn't be getting squeezed and most of our corsets are made out different materials then they were back in the 1800 and less but today yes it shouldn't hurt unless it is the wrong size ^_^
@@zhun3339 Again, if it fits properly it should not matter. I work a desk job and corsets keep my back pain at bay while I am at work - I work from 8-10 hour shifts, then if I come home and do anything on PC, I keep it on.
This is absolutely not how corsets should fit. Historical corsetry has gotten a bad rep over time. Corsets should be a supportive and shapely garment but should in no way be laced so tight as to restrict breathing. Women used to work on farms and do all sorts of physical labor and if their corsets fit like this, it would have been impossible.
I agree, modern media seems to love to exaggerate just how restrictive corsets were, even though they were essentially just bras from a different era. There is no doubt that some women did have their corsets tightened to unhealthy levels in order to give themselves smaller waists, and there were times women may pass out due to how tight their corsets were. But at that time tiny waists were considered very fashionable.
@@barbiquearea Exactly. And even with the ones tight laced for a smaller waist: it's like stilettos (I know I spelled that wrong) if you're wearing them, you're not expecting to be comfortable.
corsets can actually be made to tighten and cinch a waist to however small BUT! it requires a lot of training your body and letting it adjust to the desired tightness. violet chachki explains this more on her corset tour video. what these producers and directors are doing to their actors is not letting them get used to the corsets before they get forced into them for how many hours per day, which is why its uncomfortable for them.
Corsets really aren't all that bad. The only real problem is that the corsets seen in movies aren't necessarily worn or made right, and because the actresses always hear about how horrible corsets are they never bother with trying to compromise. Most likely, these actresses were wearing corsets that were tight-laced, which is by no means necessary to wear one. If you're interested in learning about actual corsets and what they're like, I'd suggest checking out dress historians with greater knowledge on the matter like Bernadette Banner.
Ok, as every person who wears a corset knows that a corset should feel like a tight hug. You should still be able to breathe in it and not struggle as much as they did. THEY SHOULD SUE

This whole video was painful to watch. And to think, nearly every issue these women complained about could've been fixed if they and the directors actually allowed time to get a properly fitted corset and get used to it for a little bit (+ wearing a chemise underneath). Corsets SHOULD NOT "fuse ribs" so an actress can't breathe, shouldn't mark up your skin, shouldn't make you faint, shouldn't cause long term harm, etc... I do believe the actresses when they say wearing the corsets was uncomfortable. But, are those corsets the correct size, and are they correctly laced? This is the main issue.
Just a reminder that corsets are uncomfortable if they aren’t fitted right for your body and are pulled too tight 😁 Edit: I want to add to this. since I’ve made this comment I watched a few more videos on this, videos on how to properly wear a corset and take care of it ect. Along with some educational videos on TikTok. If the actors were uncomfortable it was because of these three reasons: 1. Wrong measurements/structure 2. It wasn’t seasoned and made to comfortably fit on their body before filming 3. If you’re a new to wearing corsets, your only supposed to wear it for around an hour and slowly work your way up. Costume designers, while talented, they could also accidentally mess up a corset and harm the wearer. But let’s say the measurements are perfect in every way, you’d still need to season the corset. Seasoning is when you break the corset in like you’d break in a new pair of heels or shoes. Seasoning takes time and that is when you’d start out with only an hour of wear time at first. Actresses most likely are put into a brand new corset and even if they had the knowledge to season it, I doubt they’d have the time to do it before filming. While filming they’d be in an unfit corset for 7-12 hours a day which is super uncomfortable with the proper precautions taken. Also to readdress the too tight part, tight lacing is also one of the big problems with corsets and health. Tight lacing is when you lace your corset too tight or wear one a little small. That can really mess you up physically. Your organs will shift a little when wearing a corset (that’s normal just like when your organs shift when your pregnant), but when tight lacing they might get squished too much. Long story short: Corset good/ misinformation bad. Using a corset the way it’s supposed to be, good/ using a corset incredibly wrong, bad Edit 2: I forgot to say this when writing this but someone reminded me, Corsets aren’t meant to be worn on bare skin!!! It’s can cause a bunch of issues if you do. Always wear something under neath
For starters, corsets don't have to touch the skin, there must be always something underneath. Then, they don't have to be that tight. Women, and even men (girdles) used to wear them for long periods of time, every single day and we made it elastic nowadays and calling it spanks, but it's still some kind of corset. I've been interested about the corsets polemic for a while, and I've seen both sides. I mean, it's true, you have to breathe differently, but it's not impossible, it's not that bad if it's tight properly. And yes, the corsets are constrive, but in a good way actually, they force you to have a good posture. And you can move around and do stunts with them. Have you seen The Nevers? That show recently started and I've seen some crazy and cool stunts while wearing corsets. In conclusion, corset are treated as oppressing but in reality, you need to wear them properly and adapt to them. Just like with high heels, there's not that much controversy around them isn't it? About the effects of high heels. Personally, I would rather wear a corset a whole month than wearing stilettos for a day without being able to sit or lay down, or even less, three hours. I wear heels, but comfortable ones... Not super high painful ones... Well, that's my opinion. Best regards from Barcelona!
So you’re saying that their costume departments were awful? Corsets normally aren’t that bad, they’re basically extended medieval bras. They’re only bad if they’re laced too tightly or wrongly made
I think this is the fault of the directors or the costume department. Take for instance Lilly James in Cinderella. She was corseted down to 17 inches. It takes years of consistent tightlacing to wear a corset that tight with comfort. Why did she need to be corseted down to that? The skirt and the Bertha were already making her waist look small. They could have had her corset down to a comfortable measurement. You don't need to corset down to a crazy measurement to look like you have a tiny waist. I corset down two inches or even one and my waist already looks small. They shouldn't make these actresses tightlace like this.
This isn’t how historical corsets worked. The actresses should sue their companies if it is that painful. Women could do farm work in corsets. If it hurts, it doesn’t fit!
This is hilarious. If you wear a properly fitting corset in the correct way (with a liner underneath and tied to just barely snug) it should be so comfortable that all you notice is the back support. None of these issues are the fault of the corsets. It is all due to the failing of the costumers who didn't get a proper fit and style for each of the actresses and then laced them too tightly on top of it. I wear corsets on a daily basis and you'll never catch me in anything even mildly uncomfortable. I can breathe and do my daily tasks with absolutely no issues. I've been known to sleep in it sometimes as well because I either forget I'm wearing it or I'm using it to ease my chronic back pain from scoliosis and joint issues. I feel so bad for these actresses. There was no need for them to go through all that. The staff around them did a terrible job and that's what led to their problems.
seeing that Phoebe was left with marks on her body is just painful to watch. especially knowing that that could've been avoided so easily if they just PUT SOMETHING UNDERNEATH IT LIKE YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO!!!!
Expected Helena Bonham Carter here. She had to wear corset for her role as Bellatrix Lestrange in the Harry Potter franchise. She appeared in the last three movies of the franchise & it was hard. Because she had to change her voice for this franchise, whereas many could barely breath & talk in their natural voice wearing a corset.
I was kind of expecting at least one of the horsewomen of the corsetcalypse(Bernadette, Karolina, Abby, Nicole) to comment on this ridiculous video hahaha
No! Corsets are comfy and only restrict bending over. They need to be broken in, work OVER SOMETHING for comfort, laced snug but not tight, and should NOT keep you from eating a meal. Maybe not a feast, but not just liquids.
Didn't Elle Fanning have some experience with corsets before The Great? Because she has done other period pieces such as The Beguiled and Mary Shelley, both set in the 19th century where corsets would have been in fashion. Not to mention Maleficent and Maleficent 2 where she played a Disney princess.
Of course it seams painful. They’re being forced to wear the corsets WRONG for the sake of a misogynist vision (“women are so vain and stupid that they constricted their breathing and tightlaced themselves”). Historically, corsets were not tightlaced and they were never worn against bare skin, so they wouldn’t be leaving marks on the skin. A properly worn corset is supposed to be comfortable. It should not pinch or cause you any pain. It’s a supportive foundation garment.
Since this is not an accurate representation of what corsets are or do: no. Do some research and invest in a good one. If you wanna learn more about corsets watch Abby Cox, Bernadette Banner or Carolina Zebrowska - to name just a few.
I heard Judy Garland who played Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz had to wear corset underneath her costume to flatten her chest to make her look like she was 12 years old.
Just wtf. The corset that should be worn by Millie should be whaleboned. Which is flexible so she would move easily. Not wood - like what idiot would make corset from wood? Also - every actress said that the corset was too tight - no one would wear it that tight - so they didn’t experienced wearing of a corset. The women who wore like really wore corsets were able to ride a horse, fight or rock climb. Also the last thing - everyone would wear something under the corset - exactly because it can rip your skin because it has steel parts. So you would always have some undergarment under the corset - or stays (not everything in this video was a corset).
The Ren Faire actors who wear corsets for 10 hours a day in 95°F+ weather: WEAK Seriously though, nobody in this video had a proper corset/was prepared for corsetry. I've been wearing corsets since I was 16 and good gods these videos make me laugh so hard. Also, so many of these aren't corsets at all, they're stays, and aren't meant to be tightly laced. They have very different constructions and do very different things.
This is not an awesome vid. Corsets should not be uncomfortable and laced so tight to the point of not being able to breathe. Lots of historical misconceptions.
Exactly, a very very common mistake these days is the fact that they will hand a actor or actress a generic size so small extra small medium large without getting them professionally fit it even though getting them professionally fitted and made for you is typically cheaper don't know why but if you don't do that of course it's going to hurt you that's just like if I went out and bought you a wedding dress or a pair of shoes from a certain time period and didn't make it to fit your body like it's supposed to actually a great example of this is Kim Kardashian wearing Marilyn Monroe's dress, it wasn't made for her so not only did it fit her body but she actually reported that it hurt her to wear it, it was literally used as a form of bra and a method specifically to hold up skirts if you are a wealthy woman there were women who bet their backs over and did very very hard work in courses there were women who went running who have done bicycle races and horseback riding races all in corsets, it is made specifically for your figure it's not meant to make you seem like you got this itsy bitsy little waist, like a lot of mainstream media has had, one of the main reasons for people specifically men doing this is because they were intimidated by the fact that a woman could do everything a man could do but in a corset and they thought that they were these little torture devices also another reason was that it was specific for women to wear corsets and it was harder for a man to take off when he was with his wife there have been journals that prove both of these points

Historical corsets were comfortable, made to fit and the whalebone was very flexible- it frustrates me so much that people complain about corsets and always assume the worst without doing ANY research. Corsets were structured undergarments- a million times more comfortable than a cheap bra with a wire. The only way in which they could be uncomfortable and “harmful”, is when they were tight laced- which was only a thing in the very high- society who were determined to have the most fashionable silhouettes, and was very uncommon overall. And for them to be harmful- you would have to wear tight laced corsets for quite a while. People shouldn’t make videos like this- claiming that they were Torture devices used to oppress woman- this is absolute nonsense- they were undergarments used to reinforce & support and were excellent at doing so.🙄🙄🙄
Noooooo, these corsets are too tight 😭 they shouldn’t hurt. I have several and even those dig into certain areas depending on the corset. I have a small torso so most dont fit correctly and dig into my underarms and make them lay weird. Some dig into my hips since I have wider hips and they really need a bit of gore and padding/ lacing to adjust there. Steel boning is good so it doesn’t shift and dig, but that doesn’t allow you to bend at the waist for obvious reasons. Plastic is flexible but so much so it jabs into my side. I honestly need a custom corset since 26-27.5” waist naturally depending on how much I eat. Combined with a small torso and wide hips makes the fit dig into spots I rather they don’t. BUT overall I can breath and move mostly normal I do desire a custom fit though 🥲
That’s the undergarment women in the west wore from ca the 1830s till the 1910s to support the breasts. Before that women either wore what’s called a pair of Stays or a kind of sturdy fabric vest to keep the girls up. After the invention of the bra in the 1910s the corsets turned into a girdle, which was worn by most women until the end of the 60s approximately.

Yeah, like you wear bras everyday today. Corsets were underwear back then. Nothing more. The problem is, nowadays, they don't fit their corsets. If you were to wear a bra 3 sizes to small you would also have breathing troubles. The issue is also that a lot tight lace their corsets. It wasn't a common practice back then for good reason. Tight Lacing is actually dangerous. A reminder that most fashion back then was created by women. Yes. Even corsets. Because note that back then being bigger in size was seen as attractive (meaning you had much space for babies etc). Corsets were made to defy that. It was feminist at that time

About the effects of high heels. Personally, I would rather wear a corset a whole month than wearing stilettos for a day without being able to sit or lay down, or even less, three hours. I wear heels, but comfortable ones... Not super high painful ones...
Well, that's my opinion.
Best regards from Barcelona!
the misinformation made me cry
Something's wrong if their corsets are that uncomfortable.
So you’re saying that their costume departments were awful? Corsets normally aren’t that bad, they’re basically extended medieval bras. They’re only bad if they’re laced too tightly or wrongly made
I love how everyone In the comments is aware that corsets are not bad 🙌🏻
I think this is the fault of the directors or the costume department. Take for instance Lilly James in Cinderella. She was corseted down to 17 inches. It takes years of consistent tightlacing to wear a corset that tight with comfort. Why did she need to be corseted down to that? The skirt and the Bertha were already making her waist look small. They could have had her corset down to a comfortable measurement. You don't need to corset down to a crazy measurement to look like you have a tiny waist. I corset down two inches or even one and my waist already looks small. They shouldn't make these actresses tightlace like this.
None of these corsets were worn properly. You don't wear them straight on your skin and if it's uncomfortable it's definitely the wrong size.
This isn’t how historical corsets worked. The actresses should sue their companies if it is that painful. Women could do farm work in corsets. If it hurts, it doesn’t fit!
Corsets are much more comfortable than underwire bras. 🎭🩰🎨
Corsets are not to make you thin, it's a bra for womens back in the day.
Corsets are much more comfortable than underwire bras. 🎭🩰🎨
The staff around them did a terrible job and that's what led to their problems.
seeing that Phoebe was left with marks on her body is just painful to watch. especially knowing that that could've been avoided so easily if they just PUT SOMETHING UNDERNEATH IT LIKE YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO!!!!
if people actually used corsets in the right way, it wouldnt be this bad
Expected Helena Bonham Carter here. She had to wear corset for her role as Bellatrix Lestrange in the Harry Potter franchise. She appeared in the last three movies of the franchise & it was hard. Because she had to change her voice for this franchise, whereas many could barely breath & talk in their natural voice wearing a corset.
Same I thought she would be here
also just wanted to say that women wore shifts underneath so as to not have markings
karolina zebrowska where you atttt
And let's not forget Bernadette Banner
@@CrownedLily yup
Yep, they were basically bras of their time (not really but either way they’re supposed to be comfortable)

Since this is not an accurate representation of what corsets are or do: no. Do some research and invest in a good one. If you wanna learn more about corsets watch Abby Cox, Bernadette Banner or Carolina Zebrowska - to name just a few.
PEOPLE DIDINT "FAINT ALL THE TIME"
I heard Judy Garland who played Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz had to wear corset underneath her costume to flatten her chest to make her look like she was 12 years old.
I wear a corset all the time and have never had trouble breathing or any problems
Poor people did use reeds, because they could not afford whalebone. I can't remember where I heard that from, maybe Bernadette Banner?
@@jazziered142 that makes sense. Red is flexible too, especially the fresh young sticks.
Claire holt who played Rebekah had to do so many era outfits including tight corsets.

I wore a stay for an entire summer (4-months) for a Renaissance Festival, my waste was tiny, and the stay/corset was VERY comfortable.

Seriously though, nobody in this video had a proper corset/was prepared for corsetry. I've been wearing corsets since I was 16 and good gods these videos make me laugh so hard.
Also, so many of these aren't corsets at all, they're stays, and aren't meant to be tightly laced. They have very different constructions and do very different things.
Let’s clear this up, Stays are not Corsets. Girdles are also not Corsets.
What’s a corset and a girdles
In my country, people say girdles as corsets. And i love to wear it
You do awesome vids
This is not an awesome vid. Corsets should not be uncomfortable and laced so tight to the point of not being able to breathe. Lots of historical misconceptions.
I honestly think that all of these are beyond painful, but the one that lily james wore was crazy tight! it was like 6 inches
Not properly sized I feel bad for her…
What I've learned from this video: When actors are wearing corsets, it's hard to breathe and can be painful, but overall it's worth it.

*banging pots and pans together*
CORSETS THEMSELVES ARE NOT BAD. TIGHT-LACING IS THE ISSUE. CORSETS THEMSELVES ARE NOT BAD.
If corsets are sized properly, you should not be in pain… poor actresses were sized improperly.
Emma stone’s organs did not freaking shift

Historical corsets were comfortable, made to fit and the whalebone was very flexible- it frustrates me so much that people complain about corsets and always assume the worst without doing ANY research. Corsets were structured undergarments- a million times more comfortable than a cheap bra with a wire.
The only way in which they could be uncomfortable and “harmful”, is when they were tight laced- which was only a thing in the very high- society who were determined to have the most fashionable silhouettes, and was very uncommon overall. And for them to be harmful- you would have to wear tight laced corsets for quite a while.
People shouldn’t make videos like this- claiming that they were Torture devices used to oppress woman- this is absolute nonsense- they were undergarments used to reinforce & support and were excellent at doing so.🙄🙄🙄
Eee That Hurt 😪 Wouldn't That Bleed
no it won’t
This is probably a dumb question but what exactly is a corsets
Wood thing that wrap around women's waist tied with laces.
@@celiwhaaat6285 ah okay thanks that just sounds painful RIP people in the 1830s I couldn’t imagine wearing it every day

If you want the historical accuracy that viewers are constantly seeking for then obviously wearing a corset is not forced its just what it was and everyone is striving for perfection.
You Must Imagine, that they wore it every day a few decades away.😬
