    I use two double insulated stainless steel water bottles in summer. A 900 ml and a 600 ml. I can put cold water and an ice block in the morning and the ice is still present after 2 hours and 50 km on a day of 40 C. It makes a big difference.

    In sub freezing weather I put a warm drink in the front & hot in the back upside down with a sock over the bottle (the ice forms at the top, so the cap stays clear). You can usually ride two hours in 20F with no problem.

    You can use an ordinary vacuum flask like the black one shown in this video. Take an old water bottle and cut it off at the indentation that is supposed to anchor the bottle. Slide the vacuum flask inside this one and put some tape on the edge to secure. The outside of the old water bottle will hold it in the cage (if not wrap the flask in ethafoam or bar tape to get a secure fit and then put it in the old bottle). On a very hot day (>32C), I put a few ice cubes in my vacuum flask and even four hours later, they have not melted and the water is ice cold. It replaces a cold drink can from a store.
    Another tip to avoid having to clean the flask so often is to only pour cold water into another bottle to drink or avoid drinking directly from the flask. The bacteria from your mouth is what proliferates inside the flask. Modern water bottles have a one-way valve to prevent this. Also if you have a small frame, you can get a bottle cage that releases the bottle from the side, instead of having to pull up.

      😮 amazing insight. Thanks for sharing.

      @@cycleandexplore You can also chill the flask in the refrigerator before filling and this will extend the cooling capacity even more. I think freezing would work, but there is a risk that the contraction of the soldering may break the vacuum seal and the insulation would then not work.

    I like my insulated bottle for cross country skiing, starting with hot drink, to keep it from freezing.

    I live in Saudi Arabia and I can confirm that those insulated water bottles are worth every halala (1/100 of a Saudi riyal 😁)

    I freeze 2 insulated bottles when I ride in Hong Kong, and they'll keep cool and even still have some ice crystals after 2-3 hours.
    I think they are worth it if you ride in the heat.

    I live in Brazil (hot thru most of the year), and use 2 specialized purist insulated bottles on almost all my rides. Way better than regular bottles. Worth the extra price/weight.

    I use a light bleach solution to clean my bottles. I leave the bottles several hours in that, it just works. The bleach smell goes away very easily.
    Very interested in the steel option. on flat summer rides, i can see how spending the extra money (these seem to be expensive) could actually make sense, for a change.
    I guess it also justifies freezing bottles, or using slushies, or stuff like that in summer. Dan Bigham used lots of these cooling tricks for his hour record. So not only should riders be using insulated bottles, but should also start with sub zero drinks, logically.

      Yap, It drinking cool water helps me ride longer and less stress on my body (lower core temperature) 😃

      @@cycleandexplore Same for cleaning - I used to use expensive baby bottle fluid - Milton but swapped to diluted normal bleach recently. Works well. The CamelBak flow control tops get super yukky with bacteria if you use carb based drink in a hot country - I live in Brazil for ref.

    Excellent.
    I'll consider the Camelbak Podium Steel. Presumably there are also competitors. I want less plastic in my life, and the metal ones with vacuum seals always insulate better anyway.
    I would imagine some of the "sippy cup" style of non-bike bottles could also work so long as the diameter is compatible with the cage. I have a cheap aluminum cage but now need to look for ... plastic. Irony! Or maybe I can just line the cage with felt or similar.
    Back in the 1990s, all we had were basic sport bottles that only delivered warm water on a ride. I eventually never added water, just shoved it full of ice and waited a little while for it to melt.

      I will be keen to try the Podium Steel and find out myself. All of my vacuum steel bottles have amazing insulation.
      A freezed the bottle (750ml) would not hold very long (approx. 1 hour in my experience) when the outdoor temperature is above 35c. Not that I ride in such condition everyday but having a cold drink do make a noticeable difference in those days.

      @@cycleandexplore My Podium Steel arrived today. FYI, Amazon prices can vary depending on bottle color ... Because it's metal, it won't fully fit in cages that expect the bottle to flex a little.
      I also picked up an Elite T-Race cage, it's plastic but does not flex much at all. The Podium Steel won't fully insert but it does stay put. Time will tell if it fully works with this cage. The bottle seems very well made.

    H2O molecules bang and rub against each other, which increases temperature. This is independent from external temperature and insulation. You may want to do a long ride with two bottles (insulated and not) and check their temperatures at regular intervals

    • @pierrex3226
      @pierrex3226 4 месяца назад

      Very much agree with that. I think 45min & 90min intervals would be good. More than that, and you should be refilling your bottles anyway.

      While this is true the effect is small. What you are witnessing is the increase heat transfer from bottle to the water due to the water moving around. I have the same bottle and no way it even comes close to holding any sort of usable temp for up to an hour, especially if it's exposed to some kind of direct sun.

    • @marcdaniels9079
      @marcdaniels9079 2 месяца назад

      It’s a lot more complex than bang and rub. 😅
      ruclips.net/video/pEw0RKCANFs/видео.html
      I doubt this contributes at all to the water heating versus the thermal transfer from ambient surroundings as noted already
