Starting a career in digital marketing doesn’t necessarily require a specific degree. Nevertheless, you will need to study a great deal of information, gain relevant skills and expertise to establish your career.
As a novice in the early days of my career, I had to go through many experiences and I learned by trial and error. In this post, I’m going to share with you the lessons from my journey through five key points. These tips are not only helpful to enhance the knowledge you already possess, but also to prepare yourself for the ongoing learning process that is the foremost requirement of digital marketing.

"Networking is key, meet as many people as you can.." Meanwhile in 2021, I'm sitting at home alone in quarantine, sending my CV everywhere tirelessly..
I feel you... 😌 but we’re all in the same boat and virtual networking is also an essential skill to build in these times... and possibly online networking is somewhat easier for introverted people who don’t enjoy crowds.

That is definitely the toughest point to start and it feels scary. It is scary for me as well - although nowadays I will challenge myself to do it even though it feels uncomfortable (I would shy away in the past). I would start with anyone that I know anything about (potentially someone I've researched and want to meet and chat with) and start a conversation with them by introducing myself.

A "no" simply means that this door is not for you. Thanks for the great video Elif! I'd like to see in a future video, how am I supposed to approach a client's needs. In matters of consulting him first before starting with all the hustle (campaigns, content consistency, etc) and by respecting his vision for his company, am I supposed to set from the beginning a specific budget for the digital strategies we are going to follow or present him with options (financially and digitally) and see which road he wants to follow to arrive to his goal?

Great video, Elif! The point about personal branding is spot on - having a resume is often not enough and when it comes to communicating your value to others, there needs to be more proof points, which is a call to action for any business professional to establish a presence on social media, LinkedIn and RUclips in particular.
Absolutely. I think having a personal brand is now becoming a non-negotiable if you want to have stand out (and even survive) in your professional life.

Yes yes yes! Especially now that remote work is so widely accepted, it should much easier than before. And marketing is a great field to be in when working remotely - they go well together.
@ well I just graduated with my associates in digital media design and trying to figure out what bachelors degree I want now..I find marketing so interesting mainly because the work that I would be doing ties into drawing people's attention..

Really is true!!! Young people always thought of getting job to expand their networking (Join MLM: Amway, etc). But we can do for free and just start by ourselves without the help of part time jobs and writing post in Linkedin or FB.

Thanks Afaf! Very specific question but I don't think the answer is only determined by your previous job in accounting/audit. It depends on your skills, strengths and abilities. Maybe you worked in accounting but you're really good at copywriting and social media and you can consider content marketing. Do you know what I mean?

Hi, what do you do to stay updated on the new trends in marketing? I am graduating this spring from my undergrad in psychology and neuroscience. I realized this summer that I want to pursue a career in business and marketing. I already know the brand I want to work with and I completing a HBS certificate program, next step will be to get a MBA in marketing.
I follow marketing influencers, blogs & marketing software companies that create regular content. Linkedin groups are also helpful to stay up to date, as well as podcasts from companies such as Buffer (I love their podcast). Online courses are also great free sources.

I know this question is a year later but, can you give me some examples of having your own specialty in your profession ? I thought that product marketing was an office-job and getting products that you must put as most effectively on the market to get as much sales as possible. I'm a very multilingual and creative person but I don't see a branch like that in this industry.
The best way to get a job in any field is to know somebody on the inside! That's why networking is key! You can have any degree you want, someone who is less qualified than you will get a job before you if they have a connection vs you who is more qualified and has a better resume but don't know anyone on the inside or don't have any connection. Sad but true!
very true. knowing someone is a game-changer and many of us don't know how to expand our networks - especially in the early years of adulthood :)
