    I'm glad he brought up the mental health issue. When your burnt out any minor aches and pains can become major. I was at work one night working overnights. I worked 12 hour nights. This one night I was ready to snap. I was exhausted, depressed, and my shoulder had a nagging pain. I decided to go home that night. I told the boss my shoulder was hurting and needed to go. He wasn't happy, and called me a pussy and what not, in a professional way, lol. He was old school. You don't go home over a few sniffles which is a good way to be. A few months went by, maybe weeks, not sure of the time frame, but me and the boss were on break and started talking. Somehow that night I left got brought up. Not sure who brought it up but it was. I told him the reason I left that night was cuz I was depressed and the shoulder was the icing on the cake. When I said that his tone changed. He asked why didn't you say that and took it serious. I said I wasn't comfortable sharing my problems at that moment. He had a new respect for me after that in which I was surprised about. When it came to mental health, he understood and showed some empathy and said that is a different story than a nagging shoulder pain.

Despite the long line he took a few extra moments to talk to me and my little brother and even hit us with the "have a nice day". Eugene was also just an absolutely great human being and he got handed the shittiest gimmick. a lot of WWF's success in the war I think wasn't planned at all. the way how it organically came together increased its impact. it's a period in time that can never be duplicated. 1997 was a very underrated year for the company. You touch my soul.
    I am where I told everyone-including myself- I wanted to be. I have some pop from savvy crowds, sometimes a fellow performer sings one of my songs, local super talents know who I am . . . sort of. I am confident enough to promote them, too, without prompting or personal advantage. They deserve it.
    I'm not trying to get at the trough and that lack of competitive spirit works for me. Heck-some worthy folks inside the business grok me. I'm fortunate to have the freedom.
    I feel this all as an unmitigated blessing . . . at least until my health crashes. Or I treat someone wrong and the bridge to paradise collapses. It's made out of moonbeams and gossamer. Gotta be careful with it.
    If 'you get what you paid for" out of life, then I must've paid an awful lot. Considering how boneheaded I've been to some important others, I must've paid wayyy more than I thought.
    But I don't feel joy every moment. The human condition assures I will have highs and lows, even in the midst of artistic relevance. I still rant, and rage, and sometimes gush at my own stuff . . . well, most times, tbh. But I would not trade this beautiful, sometimes boring, sometimes irritating, perfection for all the world.

He is perhaps the greatest ring performer but he’s not in the list of guys who are the best champions of all time. His own self consciousness ruined his career. He came back in 2002 when Rock and austin were pretty much done. He came back ( because his contract finished) and I hate how people say there was 2 Shawn Michaels. He tried his best at showing he changed but he never did. His “professionalism” and attitude came out when he had to do the honours for hogan. The typical Shawn came back out and was visible for all to see. Don’t get me wrong, hogan is the same thing but trying to sabotage a major PPV match is something even wrestlers who have legitimate beef don’t do.

    As far as in ring, athletic ability goes, Shawn was one of the very best. He was just an ok promo but never anything great. Definitely not the best of all time when you consider everything a star has to have to qualify for that: in ring ability, promo skills, and drawing power. Maybe it was because pro wrestling business was down at that time but HBK never drew like Austin, Rock, or even Foley in WWF. He definitely didn't draw as well as Hogan, Piper, Savage, or Sting in WCW. HBK was also unprofessional and this whole "I Lost My Smile" business he pulled was a transparent way to get out of putting Bret over. Shawn was a big part of the beginning of the attitude era but guys like Austin, Rock, Foley, and even Taker were much bigger parts of that than HBK was. Athletically gifted but morally bankrupt.

      When he was the top guy in 1996, he had no one to help him. Bret took time off TV to pursue acting and refresh, Austin was still doing his ringmaster gimmick, The Rock didn’t debut until the end of the year. His supporting cast was Bulldog, Vader and Sycho Sid. The guy was literally carrying the company on his back that entire year. When Steve Austin was on top he had The Rock, Mick Foley, Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels, Triple H and the company was just a lot better than it had been the year prior in general. You can’t really put the blame on just one guy for everything.

    • @DWtechfan
      @DWtechfan Год назад

      @@tammyfytch1073 Austin didn't really have either HBK nor Bret Hart supporting him because he didn't win the WWF title until the end of March of 1998. By that time, Bret was long gone to WCW and Shawn was briefly there to forcibly hand over the belt to Austin and wouldn't return until 2002. HBK had Taker, Bret, Sid, Owen, Foley, Razor, Diesel, and to a lesser degree, even Triple H though he was allied with him and Helmsley wasn't working many main events and Razor/Diesel left for WCW too. Shawn was to blame for not having anyone to work with because he and the Cliq ran many potential stars off or had them demoted to nothing. Vader was a great example because he was a huge star in both WCW and Japan. The reason guys like Austin and Rock were better draws as champion is because they both pulled people up instead of sabotaging them to make themselves look good. Like I said, no one will ever deny Shawn's athletic ability and greatness in storytelling. But his run as WWF Champion wasn't even close to being as great others who truly revolutionized the business. Simply because he was selfish and wasn't the kind of person people paid to see in that top spot. Look at WCW during the same time period, Hogan or Savage sometimes had less than stellar opponents and business was down yet they still drew big enough money to position WCW as the top pro wrestling company. Hogan was working with some guys far beneath him in his first run as WCW Champion like Kevin Sullivan and Lex Luger. People still paid to see him because he was a big deal and he mostly did business even though was very selfish too. The difference is Hogan was smart enough to bring many people up with him and he understood that you can't do it alone.

      @@fmthebaron I wouldn't call Yoko, Vader, and Mankind gimmick wrestlers, all HOFers who did programs with Shawn during his run. The 83 week WCW run started during his reign and ended when he dropped the belt to Austin at WM 14. Considering all the backstage stroke he and his buddies had and his constant unprofessionalism, yeah I would say he takes a lot of blame for WWF stinking majorly. Watching Mick's new podcast clips, he talks how Taker had a stale gimmick by '96, and working with Mankind (and later Kane) gave him new life. Bret doing a double turn at WM13 for Austin and putting him over while taking on the heel role for the first time showed he was always willing to do business. Both Taker and Bret put over other guys and were willing to take risks with their characters, so don't lump them with Shawn, who lost his little smile and screwed up plans for WM13. Oh and he and HHH managed to find time to bury The Rock when he was coming up as well.
