Guitar Lesson: How To Play Chris Cornell's Rendition of Billie Jean by Michael Jackson
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 9 май 2019
- I argue that everything Chris Cornell touched turned to gold. While most people would change the tempo, instrumentation, or style of a song when crafting a cover, Chris changed the very bedrock of Michael Jackson's Billie Jean, the time signature, and somehow managed to pull it off.

This tutorial is just perfect for an intermediate player like myself. It outlines only the necessary bits you need to play the song. No tedious explanations of finger placing, up or down strumming, endless repetitions, exact chord names, out of key excessive singing by the presenter, etc. Great job, Ryan you're a natural teacher and you sing well too! Thanks for the video
thank you for that ivan :)
This is one of the best covers of a song ever. Mind boggling performance by Chris.
Fully agree, Chief Madame Secretary! Not many could take a happy pop song, completely change its mood and get away with it, the way Chris does here :)
@@Slogmann Right?! You have to be insane to even attempt a Michael Jackson cover, never mind take it to another place and successfully create something as good as the original. But he strips it down to almost nothing and just let's his voice carry it. Whenever I want to introduce someone to Chris's other wordly voice this is the song I play.
You've hit the nail on its head there, Chief Madame S, I would agree with all of that :)
I SAID NO TALKING TO EACH OTHER!
Watch out..old man Lendt woke up and seems to be cranky.
I was just like, "there's no way Ryan has done this song" then there it was.
:)
Your videos are very helpful and appreciated. Keep doing what you do 👍
thank you very much kind friend, and thanks for being here :)
awesome video as always Ryan! Chris was and is a legend and its good to see we wont be forgetting him any time soon, same with Layne, Kurt and Scott and the other voices of grunge.
My feeling is a lot of kids who are turning into listening to music age now are being exposed to actual music by their parents as well. So, kudos to all the parents! I hope all of our men (and women) stay relevant for generations to come. this is why I fight :)
Ryan Lendt yep, my dad is into everything from the Beatles to Led Zep to all the grunge artists and now i am too, no regrets
Thank you so much ...I am grateful for your help with this song. I hope to be able to play it all within 2 weeks.
good luck charmaine!
Ryan, so much thanx for this. Fits perfectly. Played till my fingers bleed. This video is such a great gift.
my great pleasure Stephan thank you :)
Thx a lot. This lesson is just super clear ! just perfect. Thx from France
thanks Yo!
Hell yeah! Can't wait to learn this one!
Enjoy, friend!
thank you sir, great lesson and an amazing song.
I'm glad you enjoyed that Georgi :)
I could watch your videos all day because Nothing Else Matters.
and now you had me googling if Chris ever did that song :) Much love Rhino, much love. (I adopted that from Stone, i've been using it a lot lately, I think it suits me well)
Ryan Lendt the chord progression and time signature of this song reminds me of nothing else matters
I'm really slow today...
Thank you so much man great job ❤
Just awesome as always dude
why thank you Gavin :)
How have I missed this until today? Fire Brother !
:)
You have the best taste and the best teaching style Ryan, you rock dude love your shit
Cheers to you Matt - thanks for being here :)
@@RyanLendt I have a problem Ryan I've looked at video after video and asked my brother how to stop muting strings when I play chores but they have told me and I've did exactly as they said I make sure to curl my knuckles how they said and I make sure I'm not pressing other strings and I make sure the tips of my fingers are down as hard as they can be. I really want to learn this song but I can't do the plucking right when I strum the chords it sounds fine but the plucking mutes them
Perfect, thank you!
welcome! thanks!
Cool Song!! I love this version
I certainly enjoyed making this one :)
Perfect fit for today. It’s raining (flooding) here in Houston and all the schools are canceled. It’s going to be an inside day for the foreseeable future. This a perfectly timed minor feel song. Looks like the boys are going to get some music history today. Thanks!
way to turn a negative into a positive Kevin - I hope everyone is safe!! and why did I think you live in Minnisota!? AND WHY CAN'T I SPELL MINNESOTA!!!
Well I grew up in MN and saw the Jayhawks a tonne of times up there, that’s where the Blue request came from. Now I live near Houston, but still consider myself a Minnesotan. No worries, I can’t imagine all the conversations you have going on just here on RUclips.
hehe, a skill i picked up having 113 weekly students. no recollection of anything until they show up, at which point every conversation we've ever had pops into my head, and leaves quickly after they do. Shadows of this still happens, but youtube profile thumbnails are a bit less poignant... though I do admit I have the fact that there's a 26 at the end of your name completely memorized :P
Such a great way of teaching. Thanks for your lessons and your excellent choice of songs :)
and thank YOU for being here, oh Bearded Squid :)
@@RyanLendt if you ever get the time I'm sure all the Cornell fans would be grateful for a lesson on his cover cover of metallica/u2's "One" ;) you've truly made me pick up my acoustic for the first time in a while cheers.
it's an honor, good sir squid :) One = on the list!
@@RyanLendt Legend of a man. I look forward to it :)

I'm happy you're happy G :)
... And amassing the way you put it out ... So we can delight our self's ... So no man's rights can
silences ....Gracias sennor...
De nada amigo :)
@@RyanLendt death musicians music should have a public domain ... I guess .... or somehow if it is not too much to ask ''again'' for an at least one-hour play-along guitar only track and one more with you and delight us with your angelical voice ... and fell like we are a band as we play along ... and please tell me how to contribute to your noble cause helping us dummy musicians ...
I think the only reason you don’t realise how simple this is is because of being mesmerised by Chris’s voice! Great lesson Ryan, you should totally do a rendition of this (maybe without the “he he’s”!) 😉
Man, pop has a magical way of making simple stuff sound complicated - then when you boil it down and you're left with the guts you can appreciate it in an all new way, plus if chris sings it... take hit me baby one more time. absolutely brilliant use of basically one quirky chord progression, I am not ashamed to admit I enjoy that song mightily, but for the right reasons, and I will NEVER abstain from the he he's!
Thank you so much!😀
you're so very welcome Robert :)
pfff your have good taste on tutorials , thankxx
clearly you do as well Folkert :)
Thank You!
You're welcome!
Thanks a lot ❣
Always welcome
I've been listening to this song on repeat a whole lot lately! I love this video, much easier than I thought it was gonna be. I got real busy with school and I had to put playing and writing down, which sucked, but it's great to be able to play again! Thanks, Ryan!
Oh..and PS.... 3:12 I think a B7 chord sounds super cool for that part. A little funky for the song but in a good way! :-)
good to have you back Ms. Wiley. I concur on the B7. Both the vitamin and the chord.
Awesome.
rawk
Nice job as always Ryan! How about Every Morning by Sugar Ray? Some pretty cool acoustic in it
FUN FUN FUN REQUEST! I was looking for something simple and fun to do for tomorrow. THANK YOU DB you saved the day :)
Thanks 🙌
you're very welcome Major Tom :) Sincerely, ground control
Thank you

Awesomness
hooray :)
Just started learning this , personally I think its a ten times better version! ..... I couldn't help but laugh when you did that MJ. heehee ;) absolutely enjoying how you do this learning video ... top man !
cheers to you Ashley, thanks!
Did I just sell a canoe?! Hehehe :) Thanks for that intro, Ryan, I am honored. And thank you for the lesson as well, a job well done! :)
I too find it neat how he adds the same Bb note over Em and C (I hear it over the C as well, although he left it out on a couple of the live performances I've seen). I like how that whole Em with a flat 5 and his crazy strumming adds something quite unsettling to the song, which goes along really well with the lyrics. Without that crazy thing on the end of the chorus, I feel like it would all be a bit too pretty, if that makes sense :)
unsettling is a perfect way to describe a b5 - and I do honestly hope someday I have the opportunity to purchase a canoe from you :)
and another bites the dust...no...no another one added to my list of songs to cover HAHA thanks man! I just can't keep up! you produce too much!!!
I'm super glad you clicked with that Rockin' Krolik! Tell me about it, we on a mission nowwwww :)
@@RyanLendt yes very obvious you are...and the more you dummy these down the better for me! HAHA...I will have to spent some time reviewing everything you taught this far so I can make a suggestion! Thanks again!
Nice 🤙🏼🤙🏼

Haha I was just watching Marty teach the Michael Jackson version and he had to do the, "Hee hee!" too! lol
hehe. it's automatic.
Hey Ryan, thx for the video. Never heard this version before. Beautiful rendition. Can you tell me the strumminpattern. I'm struggeling with it. Thnx in advance. Greetings form the Netherlands. Mark
Hello Mark fellow dt guy. It's in 3/4, so you should use the strumming pattern that like all songs in 3/4 uses, which is DxxUDU. OR, whatever you feel like doing :)
@@RyanLendt thanks a lot Ryan. I'm going to try it right now. 👍
can someone please give me the strumming patterns for all the parts?
can someone please tell me the strumming patterns? for the pre chorus, the chorus and the bridge
I want to know too
@@Edgarspiffy I ended up figuring out myself

Thanks
Love this mate. Only problem is it needs to be sung and you need to be brilliant, stupid or brave to try after the two who have
that's the most valid thing that has been said on this channel in the past lunar cycle :)
She was more like a beauty queen from a movie screen
Said "don't mind, but what do you mean I am the one?"
Who will dance on the floor in the round?
She says I am the one, who will dance on the floor in the round
She said her name was Billie Jean, and she caused a scene
Every head turned with eyes that dreamed of being the one
Who will dance on the floor in the round?
People always told me be careful what you do
Don't go around breaking young girls' hearts
Mother always told me be careful who you love
Be careful what you do before the lie becomes the truth
Billie Jean is not my lover
She's just a girl who said that I am the one
But the kid is not my son
She says I am the one
But the kid is not my son
For forty days and forty nights the law was on her side
Who could can stand when she's in demand
Her schemes and her plans
'Cause we danced on the floor in the round
So take my strong advice
And remember to always think twice, do think twice
She told my baby that we danced till three
And she looked at me, showed a photo of my baby crying
His eyes were like mine
'Cause we dance on the floor in the round
People always told me be careful what you do
Don't go around breaking young girls' hearts
Then she stood right by me, the smell of sweet perfume
This happened much too soon, but she called me to her room
Billie Jean is not my lover
She's just a girl who says that I am the one
But the kid is not my son
She says I am the one, but the kid is not my son
Billie Jean is not my lover
She's just a girl who says that I am the one
But the kid is not my son
She says I am the one
But the kid is not my son
So take my strong advice
And remember to always think twice
Do think twice
Nice! Thanks man
You bet!
Does not make sense..
can someone please write down the strumming patterns for me?
