Strumming hand is def underrated in the guitar world! Down down up up on E Chord then you slide ring finger to the 6 fret and bar the rest on 4th fret with pointer... your right hand is in position to go down up down up repeatedly and just add hammer on's accordingly on the 7th(pinky) and 5th(pointer) fret of G string... On every third stroke there's a hammer on so the strumming direction changes each time too. As follows:
Down, up, *down with pinky finger, up, down, *up with pinky finger, down, up, *down with pointer finger, *up with pointer finger again...
Thats how I was taught almost identical to this video, hope the detail helps!!

There aren't too many tutorials out there where a person can watch the video and walk away being able to play the entire song in either a simplified manner or more correct actual way the artist plays the song. He is really good at filling in holes that others are leaving out or playing wrong.

Hey Ryan. First I want to say I found this tutorial very very valuable, thanks so much for putting it out here on youtube!
Also, here is what I do for that "8, 9, 11" part...Would you take a look and let me know if I'm missing anything?
Thumb mutes Low E string, pointer finger wraps around and mutes the others on fret 6.
    Open A, pinky on 8th fret G string. Move the whole shape up to 8, 9, 11, then 8, 9, 6
Then E string open. The pointer finger is still muting the same strings (fret 6), but frets that A string. Pinky frets fret 8 G string. The whole shape moves again to do the same thing: 8, 9, 11, but then 8, 9, 4
Numbers are relative to the pinky.
Does this all make sense? It's different than how you explained it, but there's freedom in how you play guitar.
Please let me know if I am missing something, or please let me know especially if you like this way.

I love that guitar lesson, so popular. But hey, can you do a cover of My Hero and use your acoustic guitar, SG bass, Les Paul guitar and Telecaster with Gibson burstbucker pickups, please?

That link I sent you has the same F shaped G that Eddie used on “Thumbing my Way”. And he does the regular G too. The “cheat” to do the D shaped G on the 7th fret was super helpful. Crazy reach that Eddie has, especially with more or less 0 mistakes. Anyway, thank you for your craft.
