Without even the merest hint of a shadow of a doubt, it's Spielberg's most underrated film. I saw it twice in it's first week, when it was released in the UK, in April, 1980. I loved it then and I love it now.
Let's all take a moment to appreciate that Capt. Wild Bill Kelso tried to engage in a fist fight with a Japanese submarine. I think he would have won if it hadn't dived.
He recycled the sub, too. While the U-boat in Raiders was a full-scale working replica (built for the German film and TV series Das Boot), the shot of the submarine surfacing by the secret island uses the Japanese sub model from this film. Spielberg kept it after the shoot and loaned it to Industrial Light & Magic, where it was repainted to match the U-boat.
Pretty sure submarines by ww2 were advanced enough to have countermeasures for stuff like that happening, the Axis had better submarines than we did because they had to be sneaky
False information man got captured but led and escape group were they raided a village and took down a fort leading an attack on their land then the war ended
The movie was so anti PC that its comedy was brilliant. Sure, it was corny as heck, but it was pure entertainment making fun of that period in time. Even veteran actors like Christopher Lee and Toshiro Mifune, contributed their talents.
Often wondered what would happen next..? I like to think he was taken to Japan,He then becomes a Samurai while being held at a Prisoner Camp, maybe there was another GI also held there (ie Richard Pryor Characters from Samurai Hotel),and the events of Samurai Hotel happen after the war finishes and they both return to the USA(making 1941 prequel to Samurai Hotel)
No, the U-boat(U-26) in Raiders of the Lost Ark was a mock-up Type Viic U-boat borrowed from the production of "Das Boot", and that mock-up is still at La Rochelle, France, where Das Boot was filmed. The Japanese sub from 1941 was merely a fiberglass "hat" added to a hydraulic ram for the full size exterior shots, and sounds stages for the interior shots.
@@sammoon9603 It is the same sub, in a way. While they mostly used the Das Boot sub, the shot of the sub surfacing near the island at the end used a repainted model of the Japanese sub from 1941, loaned to them by Spielberg.
great film the film before airplane it didnt break the reality but it seems by the end this happened the two guys on the ferris wheel change places kinda of hard to up there and belushi in the water climbs on the sub cigar smoking doesnt matter great film unlike some other speilberg turds
You think that was improvised breaking the reality yes I know with a film like that wild bill cigarcwould be smoking wen he came out from the water still as funny as hell

Dude than why are you even here? If you dont like a movie, than why bother even coming to make a negative comment? Like just because you dont like something doesnt mean you need to publicize it.
I know you're entitled to you're entitled to your opinion Jeahav Valentin ,Don't publizise ,If you don't like it ,Get off the pot and watch something else and don't spoil something that others enjoy watching with positive remarks .
"All right! My name is Wild Bill Kelso. And don't you... shoot. All right, turn this tub around. You're taking me to Tokyo. Anybody got a light?"
From start to finish this movie does not stop it's a masterpiece
It really is! Sooo entertaining to watch.....😁👍
A perfect release for the critics to show us all they weren't getting laid.
Thus the bad reviews.
One of my absolute favorites.
Before there was Captain America, there was "Wild Bill" Kelso.
He took care of the other front.
Yes indeed

The one laugh I got from the scene was when he tries to climb the wrong side of the conning tower.
Absolutely the best Acting class ever
いえいえダイブしなくても潜水艦相手に勝てません。
That showed what a real man Wild Bill Kelso was when he sacrificed himself to those Japanese people in order to save America.
R.I.P. John Belushi.
That salute between Belushi and Ackroyd.. Pretty sure that is the only 'interaction' they have the the whole movie.
There is a gag outtake where they acknowledge each other.
Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi, the American Heroes.
@@michaellynes3540 And the Blues Brothers.
This was where I got the idea for a sequel called "1942: Wild Bill Takes Tokyo".
I have a feeling that because of Wild Bill that sub never made it back to Tokyo. ;(
This whole thread is gay. Id rather make the sequel about how Hitler promised Japan the eastcoast of the USA.
Man I wish that happened
"It's me ya yella bastards!"
RIP Johnny- you are most definitely missed.
John "Joliet Jake Blues" Belushi saves America. What a goddamn hero he is.
One of the best movies ever made
Wild Bill Kelso wasnt trapped inside a sub with several Japanese soldiers, several Japanese soldiers were trapped inside a sub with Wild Bill Kelso.
The Blues Brothers, the American heroes.
Belushi is such a classic
Lol Kelso does the Bluto Turn!! I miss Belushi.
Spielberg recycled this scene in Raiders of the Lost Ark when Indy climbs onto the sub.

"Did we get it"? "I think so, it's going down"..
😁🍺🍺🍺👍
Nice special effects and action scenes in this movie
He could have held onto the hatch as it submerged and flooded the whole sub and drowned everyone.
Pretty sure submarines by ww2 were advanced enough to have countermeasures for stuff like that happening, the Axis had better submarines than we did because they had to be sneaky
JB, rip, you comedy genius!
RIP Jon Balooshy
Sadly Bill Kelso died in a Japanese prison camp three days before the war had ended.
False information man got captured but led and escape group were they raided a village and took down a fort leading an attack on their land then the war ended
No he was experimented on by the mad japanese surgeon
Forced to go through inhumane tortures for science
Then cannibized by his Japanese captors

0:22 yattaa!! yatta,yatta,yatta,yatta!! hahahaha!
Happy birthday 1941 38 years later you're one mine favorite Comedy movie's from 1979
Is it me? Or do I hear faint sounds of the same tune from the movie, "STRIPES"?!?
Yes
Mickey Rourke!
That was one mad, crazy, funny film!
Pre Blues Brothers 😂
0:05 Hi Mickey Rourke
Alright! Wild Bill scored himself a daily beating and a greasy ball of rice for the next few years! :)

That the same sub they used in raiders of the lost ark.

RIP Jim Belushi it's a shame we got stuck with Bil Murray instead of you in Ghostbusters;(
Jim Belushi is still alive
It's John that's dead. James (or Jim as he's more commonly known as) is still alive.
jamie george Bill Murray was still great in Ghostbusters, what are you talking about?!
and chevy in spies like us
Poor Kelso, he was probably taken to Japan and beheaded or something
I just watched this movie this morning lol the best
If you think too deeply about Wild Bill Kelso’s fate, the movie is no longer a comedy.
R.I.P John Belushi (1949-1982)
AWESOME.
I wish wild bill could have sunk
the sub
great film the film before airplane it didnt break the reality but it seems by the end this happened the two guys on the ferris wheel change places kinda of hard to up there and belushi in the water climbs on the sub cigar smoking doesnt matter great film unlike some other speilberg turds
@Therese Davis GREAT POINT MY FRIEND

How many time that sub had try to dive with the hatch opened?!
JAWS has kept Spielberg off the open water much in the same way 1941 keeps him from ever doing a full comedy
Looks like Kelso's a POW now, eh?
where did captain kelso buy his captains bars? even in wartime no one would have been stupid enough to promote this idiot.

I wonder what Capt Kelso did in Tokyo after the sub crew undoubtedly gave him a ride.
Well he Became a Samurai of course !,on returning to USA after the war finishes, the events of Samurai Hotel happen!
