    I'm glad Daddy Hoff highlighted sound, it's a big deal for me. In a small house and my daughter has some sensory issues around loud sounds. Plus I don't want to wake up the house if I make a cup early. I use a 1zpresso for that reason, but I appreciated he included sound comparisons. I get that many people don't have those issues, so I understand why it isn't highlighted in other reviews.

    • @LJ-wo1wf
      @LJ-wo1wf 2 дня назад

      Agreed. I started with a blade grinder that was ridiculously loud, and it taught me that I absolutely do not want to have to tolerate such a racket early in the morning (or even in the evening if I make some dessert coffee). My 1ZPresso Q2 is great for me but it's a little small for making bigger batches, so I'm still thinking of adding another grinder. Maybe I should get something like an Ode 2 secondhand and give it a few runs; if I don't like it, I could resell it for little to no loss.

    Please, when you do the ‘54, please, please, please talk about how ANY alternative burrs taste (and cost) and what burrs are available, or will/ could be available. Potential burr upgradability is a factor in my decision to either buy the ‘54, or save more for a 64mm grinder. If I can be 90% happy with a 54 with other burrs vs say the 064S at half the price, I’ll get the ‘54. If, a 64mm grinder is very noticeably better, I’ll save up an buy the more expensive grinder. If you can give the ‘54 a letter grade to match your previous mass comparison, even better.

    Nice comments by papa Lance! Have DF54. It was my first grinder. Works perfect. After 6 months using it hits upgraditis and want to experiment with burrs. Bought DF64 and SSP HU burrs. To compare both I like DF54 workflow more. It has more silent motor, better indicator with prolonged graduation for each 5 steps, fantastic plastic see through dosing cup and it is more compact and cleaner. On other side DF64 is faster and of course aftermarket burrs do they job. But for money DF54 is a killer grinder.
    P.S. daddy Hoff has older version of DF54 with plastic switch in this video and no rubber 45 degree catch cup angler. So it might be one of the first iterations of this grider. You should take it to consideration I think
    P.S.2 for Lance I would like to see video about DF54 burrs selection and motor rewire to go to other side as a lot of 54mm burrs are designed to spin in other direction than DF54 grinder spins. Some hardcore shit on this cheap grinder as Gaggia with gaguino mods. Who knows, how it goes 😁

    Hey Lance! Great video, as usual! Let me ask you a question... Do you believe a DF64 gen 2 or a Timemore Sculptor (either the 64s or the 78s, since I'd be more focused on espresso) would make a valid upgrade from a Breville? If so, which one would you go for? Either one would represent a considerable investment here in Brazil, due to the astronomical shipping and import taxes...

  • @jeef16

    I think on value proposition alone, the df54 is the best. all the other grinders try to market themselves in the $200 area but are really lacking in the quality of build materials compared to the giant hunk of metal that is the df54. The opus is $195 (which I think is an absurd price based on my personal experience using one) and the df54 is $230. for $30 more I think you're getting something that is really leaps and bounds ahead in terms of build quality and access to the flat burr

    I don't generally like this kind of videos (I call them parasitic), when one just comments someone else's, however here it does make sense, you both being recognized authorities in the area. Couple remarks though: 1.5× is simply too fast, especially for non-native English listeners. Putting yourself over results-graphs etc.-is silly, you have three other corners. Your videos are way too quiet, I have to turn the sound all the way up and still it is barely acceptable; if I switch from your video to the original James's one, the difference in sound volume is extreme.
    Still, thanks for the video and for your input. Greetings from Prague, Czechia.

    I would suggest another selection, about the same price or even cheaper : "used small commercial "in a bag" coffee grinders ". Like Fiorenzato F4 or Macap MC4.
    When I worked in the last coffee shop we had a similar grinder and it is essentially a DF, only a little bigger and more reliable. By the way, the bellows from the DF fit perfectly.
    You people in the first world love shiny things, but in the rest of the world we value value. Wow, what a tautology. So we're rummaging around flea markets. Here you can meet a professional photographer whose only equipment "bought new in the store" is AA batteries for the flash. And coffee lovers are like that too. And even those who are richer often buy 40 years old Mahlkonig Guatemala for home, and not something from your reviews.

    I just upgraded from the Smart Grinder Pro which I’ve had for 10 years to the df83v. Biggest problem with the Smart Grinder was consistency. I could occasionally get out super chocolatey espressos but it was hard to replicate and would more often than not come out too sour or bitter to drink in anything but a latte. The DF, of course, has been much more consistent and with the flat burrs, I can now taste the lemongrass when the tasting notes say lemongrass on the bean.

    Interesting that you agree with Hoffman on the Varia, because I really enjoy your videos and watched I think all of them regarding the varia (example: ruclips.net/video/1CBhJ3G1mI4/видео.htmlsi=oCZ8yE1Gt6kLFXNI) and muddiness or lack of acidity and clarity was never anything that I remember you mentioned. Maybe I missed something.
    I was actually surprised by Hoffman's perspective on the Varia. I had the Varia with the hypernova Ultra-S burrs for a while, and although I am by no means an expert, quite the contrary, and although it does not seem to have insane clarity and acidity compared to a flat burr like the mazzer philos i200d, it had a very well balanced profile. So not sure If the default burrs really lack acidity and clarity, but that did not pop up in your reviews from the past neither from other RUclipsrs. So it was really a surprise to me, since lots of people in the past has mentioned that the low rpm produced a really interesting combo between a flat and a conical profile.

    • @LanceHedrickUnfiltered
      @LanceHedrickUnfiltered  13 дней назад +1

      Good point! Yes. To be fair, I used the varia long after the video and perhaps my thoughts just changed. I'll need to watch what I said and the context.
      I do say in this video i think the varia has better filter than espresso. But I always felt the espresso was muddy. I do think it has acidity but it is very muddy.
      I would say James was a bit more intense about it than I would be but I always love and get maybe too giddy when James gets like that about something lol
      In short: acidity in espresso many like but def muddy. Imbalanced compared to the others. But def has acidity popping out. In filter it is much better. More on par imo with opus and encore.

      Think it's fine... It's the unfiltered channel, it's never been short 😂. Also, I don't know how the hell you've even managed one YT video with a FT job and kids!

    I had to stop in the middle. What I got out of this, more than anything else, is that Lance doesn't like James. I don't care about that.

    Watching Lance speed up to 1.25 as I’m watching in 1.75 on an already meta video… 🤌🏻

    Nice format and nice « indirect » collab (I guess James Hoffmann gave his consent and I see that positively)
