  • chopping with a axe which is very affordable
made by Müller Hammerwerk in Austria. I think this is one of the best options for a light forestry axe or as a heavier bushcraft axe. Very impressed with how it can perform and is ideal for smaller trees

    You've got good aim.
I like how you take off those branches with one or two blows.
    Efficient cutting 👍.
Thin blade also. Goes through them like a machete.

I found out that the Hutafors HY 1.2 has the same size/overall weight, just a bit shorter edge. I guess the Hultafors, is going to be a bit more versatile ( relatevely good on any wood but better on hard ones, can do a bit of spliting too) , while the Biber-Canada probably will perform a bit better on softer woods and limbing with its thiner and wider edge. I just ordered the Biber-Canada, wish me luck, all wooden axes I've ordered, all came with either bent handles, or the edge was so thick, that the axe could only serve as a hammer... Fingers crossed! Tha's my last money, but probably I'll get the Hultafors too, (1 is none 2 is 1 theory) Keep em sharp guys!!!

You got me motivated to finish my vintage 2.25lb axes. The restoration and tuning on the heads has long been complete, but the handles were nowhere to be found. I finally found some smaller handles that looked good and hafted them up. They ended up being about 27", nice and thin. Great size for a forest or camp axe.

Ben, you're the man!!! Müller Biber-Canada, is exactly as you describe it in this video! I just got it a couple of hours ago!
I have a German made Krumpholz Forest axe, with a proper Hickory handle (best Ive seen/used so far). However, even though it is 280 gr lighter, it feels way havier than the Muller!! I asked a woman, because they can see more details than us men, to hold them both, and asked her which one feels havier. She didn't even think about it, she showed me the 280 gr lighter Krumpholz! That's insane!
Only issues except the rough spots here and there is a 4mm gap in the front part of the eye. I've seen it on other brands too, but never had that issue on any of mine. I search videos, to find a way to fill that gap properly, just for the looks.
    Felling axe: Check!
Next is either the Hultafors Felling Axe HY 10-1,2 SV or it's havier brother.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge!

since you now have a 1kg axe I would get the bigger hultafors hy10 1.5kg head as that then covers all your bases. 1.5kg is good for heavier felling and splitting and he 1000 biber is excellent for smaller wood and limbs. the hy10 1.2kg is a better middle ground but clashes in usefulness a bit with the biber

I like they use power generation form water..from their site..
"Even our ancestors used the power of water to make tools. This tradition is continued today with its own hydroelectric power station. In this way, we supply ourselves with environmentally friendly electricity from a renewable energy source. In order not to disturb the natural ecosystem and to keep the impact on the environment as low as possible, our power plant is equipped with a fish ladder. It allows the fish to continue to move freely upstream and downstream."

Müller also doesn't make the axes the way they are mass produced nowdays, on other companies factories. Their forge is similar to smaller forges, that family businesses usually have where uit's only the blacksmith and his apprentice working, to create the axeheads.
If I'm not mistaken. they also have an extra guy who does the sharpening and that's it. I could be wrong though, but that's what I've seen on videos where you can see how they make an axe and from what I found on their official internet page and catalogue.

On Mine, the Steel and Hardening is holding up better than on my Prandi Yankee and my ~90 year old Axe made in the next "City."
The first Millimeter of Edge bent on the Old one when i was debranching.
The Prandis Edge bent either from debraching or from a Wrong hit. My technique was unrefined back then so when i made the Fellkerf, the Axe touched the Wood, grabbed and simultaniously the Head pivoted downwards and bent a ~20 mm Portion of Edge. I believe it was this hit, unfortunately i look to seldom at the Edge after Hits.
The Main angle is 14° and 20° 1 mm wide Secondary Angle. I just increased it to ~25-30°.
Because of my curiosity i bent 2 Axes (already fixed) and found the Limit.
If you want to find the limit "be brave" (oh god, this sounds what the girls say today... :P) and grind thin.
For who am i writing this...idk

Hi Ben, incredible video as always. I saw that you recommended the Biber Canada - do you know if it's possible to get the blue-coloured head on a hickory handle or is the blue head only sold with an ash handle? And finally, do you think (for endurance chopping) that a 1200 or even 1400 is suitable? Looking to get my first proper (i.e., not GBA) ax for trail maintenance and have really only worked with ~1000g heads thus far. Dealing mainly with quaking aspen, sugar gum, sycamore, various oak, ash, chestnut, and pine species, and less frequently yellow (tulip) poplar and red maple.

I hesitate between the Agdor Montreal pattern with a 28'' handle/2.5 lbs head and the Adler the Rheinland axe with a 27.5'' handle/2.75 lbs head. I live in Canada and they are both easily available here.
