“So they bought Boeing 707s instead of making their own aircraft. Eventually they will, but it will take 2, maybe 3 generations.”
The speech was in 1980. Now 2021, almost exactly 40 years and exactly 2-3 generations later, China is making its own commercial aircraft to compete with Boeing.
This man’s foresight ever fails to impress. He deserves his own league as the greatest statue builder of the late 20th century, I dare say as great as the Iron Chancellor, Otto von Bismarck.

Singapore also hugely benefited from being in a very strategic location that's perfect for commerce, trade, banking, etc...

It is very impractical to use democracy in China back then and even now it's still hard.
Democracy require people to have enough knowladge and good judgement of their own to decide what would benefits them and the community.
In such a big country that have so many people. Making all people wise and reasonable is not realistic.
You can sort of see this in the US nowadays too. People are aware of their power, their rights.
But they are in constant conflict because of media manipulation, hate speeches, and each faction painting others as evil.
It would be unrealistic to think that all people in the country can be educated enough to be in position that they cannot be manipulated and able to put down their pride and work together.
Not that the one party system of China is superior, it also has flaw and can be corrupted. It doesn't take a genius to see that China was better under Deng than Xi, and his policies are too nationalistic. People just don't talk much about it because there's no point stoking flame to make it worse.
But the point is many times American didn't even consider their system having any flaw at all while ridicule others.

Most countries cannot emulate Singapore simply because of this one factor, even with the best of leadership
Not to mention, it's demographics. It's history of being a multiracial, multiethnic country from the get-go meant that old divisions and strifes that rifed other nations in the 20th century were entirely non existent in Singapore. And hard working immigrants make countries more dynamic
And I bet there are even more complex sociological variables that helped in Singapore's success, which I'm not invested enough to speak about

Much of Singapore's early political history was characterised by this (and also religious) division. Support for political parties (especially support for communism) broke down amongst ethnic lines.
Not to mention all the other issues that plagued Singapore but not other developed nations. Such as lack of access to freshwater, military vulnerability to Malaysia and a hostile Indonesia, and the genuine fear of a potential communist takeover.

Deng was a quizzical conniving political animal who was a great survivor. He'll always be remembered as the man who authorised the tanks into Tiananmen Square on 4th June 1989 which killed ~ 10000 activists, students and teachers.
Lee is in his own category so don't put him with Deng

Deng was doing what he had to do. If you know LKY well enough, you will know that he would do the same. Everything come at a price.

      More like less than 1%.
There are those that smart, and have passion to do good. But this man, do whatever it took to achieve what he percieved for the good of the country.

This is no ordinary man. His global perspective is attached to reality and his long-term vision is easily 30 to 50 years ahead of his time 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
