Maybe the outdoor scenes had so much variety and details that the codec falls apart vs the higher bitrate from the c500m2. Inside though the wall has patterns and everything is still so it requires much less detail to be recorded and the codec holds up a lot better. Only problem I saw was the skin tone was a bit green on the eos r. I have an eos r and I really dig it.
Actually in the interview set up the color difference between the two is pretty big. I assume that some of that is due to color correction/grading not 100% well done (the EOS R has too much magenta on the shadows and green on the highlights comparing to the C500), but when you see the footage scaled up 300% you notice how the EOS R mess with the skin tones pretty badly.
One of the things that stood out in the exterior test shots was that the sky blues were a fair bit different with the EOS R looking more cyan. And the skin goes yellow on EOS R. But still, the EOS R is impressive for its price.
I am curious about how well the EOS R holds up when using an external recorder like the Atomos Ninja V, recording in 10-bit log. As usual, another excellent video... keep up the good work :)
Tried it with the new blackmagic video assist 12G hdr it’s like giving Superman steroids lol... couldn’t think of anything else to say but it’s great with an external recorder
The hardest part about being a perfectionist is saving money to eventually buy the best of the best only for it to be obsolete 1 year later when ( insert company ) releases the newest camera.
I've never been this blown away by how much sharper the footage from the Mkii.. it looks so so good. Makes the EOS R look crappy almost. Now I know that's me just seeing them side by side, but damn it's such a big difference.
The biggest different isn't what you can see superficially; rather, how well the footage holds up through continuous grading and editing. Provided you get it perfect the first time, there won't be an enormous difference to the naked eye.
The biggest different isn't what you can see superficially; rather, how well the footage holds up through continuous grading and editing. Provided you get it perfect the first time, there won't be an enormous difference to the naked eye.
To be fair, an iPhone 11 Pro makes the EOS R look like crap when provided with natural light. But I actually thought the EOS did a better job preserving detail in the brick during the ad spot.
Chances of you reviewing the fujifilm xt3 for video? it has a great codec at 400mbs with 10bit 4:2:0 internally and 10bit 4:2:2 with an external recorder and can shoot 4K 60 or 1080p 120 for about 1300$
I realized that the data throughput of your talking and film edits is about 10x the speed of other RUclips channels. It's amazing how much information you're able to talk about, with your speaking and editing style. Really impressive, and I never feel like I wasted time on your videos.
The difference during the "interview" was very clear when it was switching from the C500 medium shot to the EOS R5 close-up. When they were both shooting from the same angle, the shots were much closer in comparison, even when zoomed.
I find it extremely interesting that the colors on the EOS R look bad compared to the C500 mkii in the interview setup. I was expecting to see some pretty noticeable difference in clarity but I guess I just assumed that the colors would look very similar since Canon is known for it's color science. Thanks for doing this comparison! For $1700 the EOS R is awesome! But next to the C500 mkii you can definitely see what you're paying for. Such a beautiful, clean image!
I love the comparison...good job! Believe it or not, you can still see the difference even after RUclips compresses the video. I watch on a LG 31" 10bit C4K IPS panel all the time, and details do show up. I know this is 4k vs. 4k but I could tell the 500II every time. Many RUclipsrs don't seem to think it makes a difference between 1080p up-scaled and 4K but it does, especially with Video/Photo comparisons such as this. Keep up the great work!
It's really impressive how great the 1080p looks on the C500MKII. I found out that the 1080p crop mode on the eos r looks much sharper. The same sharpness than the c100mkii has and nearly as sharp as the eos r 4k. But... it's cropped in that mode... so yeah😅 using the canon 10-18mm ef-s helps for the wide angle... but it feels kinda awkward 😅
Great to see that I'm not the only missing out this one! EOS R would definitely benefit from it and it would still be for a fraction of the price of c500 mk ii.
Sooooo.... almost, almost the comparison I've been waiting for!!! :) I'm tired of comparisons like .... oh new iPhone vs Arri Alexa... oh.... new Samsung vs RED! Of course they will be better they are out of comparison. This one is much closer for being actually exciting! Love it
I always thought Gene was a nice guy, but wow, what an amazing gesture towards a fan. I'll definitely remain a fan as long you keep up your goodwill towards others Potato! You made two lifelong fans with this video. The goodwill in this video kinda reminds me when you wanted to save Kevin and reunite her with it's babies in South America. You were even able to turn that grumpy Carl into a a fun loving guy with your kindness to others!
I have that combo, only missing a C500 Mk. II 😰 Both colors and sharpness is way better with the Ninja V. But still not the same as a C500 Mk. II i'm sure.
+1 for this comparison please. I have C200 main camera and R+Ninja for B and the R/Ninja combo looks pretty good. Curious to see how it shapes up vs the C500ii
Funny thing: When the cameras are in a split screen at 6:42, the camera on the right side of the screen is actually positioned (in the real stage) at the left of the camera that is shown in the left side of the screen. So... if you know how to cross your eyes, put the video on full screen, and you cross them until you can make a single image out of both cameras, and take some adequate distance from your PC monitor to make it easier... you can watch the whole segment in amazing 3D! 😁😁😁 Probably not everyone will be able to do this, though.
Ok, while i am tempted to buy a cinema-camera for video, i do have to remind you of something that was said of photos back in already late 1800's. "If everything they can critique is the sharpness of the photo, they must not be very sharp themself." The detail isn't everything :^) (tho a better camera looks better, can't really go around that)
Great comparison. Been looking in to what I can do to improve the use of my 5D Mark IV, got a 4k itch but is it really needed? Gah.. Anyway the C500 Mk II looks better but that little EOS R did well. The C50 shots did look a tad warmer though in the documentary segment but to my eyes the EOS R had more green in the skin tones.
Dude's year has definitely been made. We all know the struggle of buying gear, especially when you're starting out. To have someone you admire come in and just talk to you is one thing. But then to come back and gift you something that can propel you towards your goals 👍🏾👍🏾 #WeLoveToSeeIt
I kind of prefer the color coming out of the EOS R. Your gray T-shirt in the interview is really magenta looking compared to the EOS R. Love your videos!
funny that the Blackmagic he gave away in this video is a better video camera than EOS R and comparable to C500 mk2. It is not full-frame though, and basically no autofocus.
@@madcoda BM is only good for rigged & controlled setup. In terms of usability for "any situation run & gun" , it's nowhere near R. IQ is just one element of the bigger picture.
@@themjian Doesnt need that much rigging tbh, and ive used it for uncontrolled events and as long as you know what you are doing, its really easy. Ive just used a cheap shoulder rig or used it completely handheld and gotten really nice results. Only thing that it really needs is power, just used a v-mount in my backpack with an cable connected to the camera and i have power all day. Image quality is sooo much better than eos r, eos r looks so damn soft, not because its compared to c500, you could compare it to a gh4 and it would still look way softer. Thought the eos r was better than this lol
Gene, ready to take the plunge. Canon eos r or Panasonic gh5. Mostly video, some Stills. Some run and gun vlog style and some locked off on tripod. Using for RUclips and short films. I don’t have the money to get this wrong, so it’s a one time buy and I’m stuck with my decision. I’d love your thoughts man.
It does seem like the EOS R is a bit warmer (more yellow) than the C500. Not sure if that's because of the color grading though - can't imagine it being something tied to C-Log in the EOS R. Was planning on picking up your LUT pack for the EOS R - hope there's options for a slightly less "warm" look.
That was super cool that you gave that camera away! I just bought a Canon 90D, but I love learning more stuff. Awesome job Potato! Definitely checking out audio.
1-Use native pixels, 4K or FHD with crop, and it will be sharper, avoid pixel binning / line skipping. 2-Set your exposure using false colors on a profesional monitor. 3-Set your white balance and tint using a profesional monitor. Your results will be almost negligible.
Best review/comparison EVER!!! Honestly, Canon should pay you for doing such an incredible job of pointing out the differences between their products. The comparisons between the RAW footage is super helpful to (aspiring) professionals who wants to know where the extra 10k+ dollars go when buying either one of these cameras. Also the detail comparison in 100%, 200% , 500% - super useful when you're looking to buy new gear! I'm still waiting for Canon's mirrorless pro body (or bodies) that should be announced soon. Pretty please Potato Jet, since you'll probably get your hands on it (them) before anyone else, do a review like this where you compare it to for example 5DmkIV. : )
Dopest episode yet. You fckn rock bro.. I eat, sleep and dream filming and I can imagine how much you just help that dude out. What a blessing you are.. you are now my favorite youtuber
Really appreciate your work , honesty and how you are opened to your audience. I mean you have giveaways at almost every video you make , other RUclipsrs with 4 , 6 , 10 mil subscribers don't give anything away , they are being selfish and think only about themselves. You really diserve more credit for you channel. Keep it up . !!
Didn't realize how much a difference there is between the them. And the C500II just excels above the R, my goodness though $16K+! BUT, I think the R with the Ninja-V would have better results. Good info!
You make an a great point. I would take amazing 1080p over mediocre 4K any day of the week. Until people actually use a true cinema camera, they will never know how much better it is. I still rock a c100 because of the reasons stated above.
Something seemed off in the side by side part during the interview test. The background looked warmer and sharper on the EOS R to me. But then again, you said you DID zoom one in to make it look like the same shot. So it makes sense to me.
The background looked sharper because the EOS R will have a deeper DoF when shooting with the same settings and equivalent focal length in 4k. It has a pretty big crop compared to the full sensor readout 4k of the C500 II.
The A-B side-by-side comparison is also a sponsor plug!? Am I alone in thinking this will catch on, like.... big time? Gene, you're a genius! Future history books will call this "the Potato Jet"! [Edit] After posting this, I continued to watch. And you promptly missed the Decisive Moment..... orz [Edit 2] We could all forget about UP from here on in. You LEGIT look like Han!!!!!!!
during the interview set up, it looks like there is a greenish hue in the skin tone on the eos r. but i feel like it could definitely work as a b-cam for interviews! just need to fix the hues a bit
Potato Jet. You've inspired me to think harder about 1080p vs 4k. I would be SO keen for you to do a roundup of what cameras under 2k do the best 1080p?
I really doubt you will see this comment, but I greatly enjoy your videos. They help me a lot. I'm at film school and I feel I'm learning a Lil more from you. I live in Botswana and I do a lot of video work with, I wouldn't say horrible cameras, but they not the best. A Canon 1200d, 600d and panasonic aghmcshdjdj something something. Would be great to get one of your cameras one day.. Thanks for the videos POTATO JEEEEET
Hi Gene, is the clog sharpness on the eos R left as out of the box? (do not mean post sharpening)...and, i see the classic yellowish tint on eos R , same as mine unfortunately (on skin in the interview comparison is very visible)
Was the C500's focus a bit off in your 'fake interview'? It looks a bit soft, especially noticeable with the brick wall when we would expect it to be sharper. With the EOS R the background is sharp so certainly looks different
This was the best c500 II Comparison/review video yet... I've watched every c500 II video on RUclips, but this one has been the biggest reveal of why the c500 II stands out from DSLR Cameras! I'd love to see some comparisons with the other c series cinema line. C500 II vs C300 II vs C200 II etc... Also, let's see you toss that baby on the Ronin s ;)
Yep, a Sung Kang doppelganger. Same illuminating smile. Anyway, to be practical, the EOS R is not in the same category as Canon's C line e.g., prosumer vs professional. Not to mention the R is mirroless camera. In layman's terms, a heavy duty pickup vs your Honda Civic as far as video is concerned. As for the camera's size, its modular. So you can outfit from body only to a full cinema rig. BTW, a Tuxedo is a suit with satin. Speaking of suits, back in the old days all sales associates were required to dress in the clothes that were constant with the apparel that was available for sale at their store. My how times have changed.
Potato Jet - "When will a Mirrorless camera get these features in this compact of a body?" The Panasonic S1H - ".... Hi, I exist...." *** I know the S1H isn't a Cinema camera and doesn't have a lot of features a Cinema camera does, but it pretty specs wise comparable to the C500 MII (heck it has IBIS...).
What a clever way of making us see the sponsorship! Loved it!
Best integration I've seen on RUclips.
I can't watch this guy at all cause of it. Kinda wrecks the video having to skip the most important parts.

Lars Rune Høgemark I agree!
And set all to max specs! The Alexa ain't afraid.

When they are put side by side the EOS R looks awful. But in the interview set up cutting between them it wasn't anywhere near as noticeable imo
I wanna see one comparing a c100 with a c500.

C500 is obviously better but the difference is not that big. The Eos R is still a great camera for videography.
C500 MII makes the EOS R, which is an incredible camera, looks like crap!
Cinema....like he said it's 10x more, it better be!!
EOS R is so much better in 10 bit external recording but you are right the C500 is still a beast!

There’s a massive noticeable difference in skin tone on the Audible ad. The EOS R has loads of green in it & there’s next to none in the C500.

Can you compare the c500 to the BMPCC 6k? I'd be interested to see if you can use the black magic as a viable B cam to the c500 🤔
And you promptly missed the Decisive Moment..... orz
[Edit 2] We could all forget about UP from here on in.
Such a pleasure to watch your stuff Gene.
Never seen a cleaner ad placement, well done
I really doubt you will see this comment, but I greatly enjoy your videos. They help me a lot. I'm at film school and I feel I'm learning a Lil more from you. I live in Botswana and I do a lot of video work with, I wouldn't say horrible cameras, but they not the best. A Canon 1200d, 600d and panasonic aghmcshdjdj something something. Would be great to get one of your cameras one day.. Thanks for the videos POTATO JEEEEET
Great video👍
But...is the JibONE giveaway already over?
Thank you sooooo much, been asking for this type video ... and you crushed it! Amazing job, you hit every point, answered all my questions. Thanks PJ!
Bro Potato Jet is one of the most generous youtuber i've seen.
Here I am with my OG C100 and EOS R... but man, forget all that, giving a fan a camera!? That was timeless.
So much confusion, did you give the employee charging cables and what not too? Seems like cameras come with a bunch of stuff. Where’s the stuff?
After seeing the documentary of your work life, I have newfound respect for your channel, personality and work effort! Great videos :D
Well, RUclips compression didn’t make it less obvious. Broke my heart. Hopefully the EOS R is better with the Atomos Ninja V and C-log.
Do you have any major projects coming up? Maybe we could have a crowd funded Potatoe Jet movie.
Potato Jet - "When will a Mirrorless camera get these features in this compact of a body?"
The Panasonic S1H - ".... Hi, I exist...."
*** I know the S1H isn't a Cinema camera and doesn't have a lot of features a Cinema camera does, but it pretty specs wise comparable to the C500 MII (heck it has IBIS...).
