The Dark Tower series is one of the most elaborate and meta unique Dark Science Fantasy series ever written. Its character work is rich, poetic, and very honest about what it means to be a human with flaws. Roland’s quest for the tower is not for revenge on the man in black, it was because he set out to salvage his world since his early life was affected by the efforts of the Crimson King (the man in black’s master) to bring the tower down, which is the nexus center of every universe thinkable. The last 2 books are just King telling everyone how awesome he is, it's a sick punchline to what started as a good story.
Whenever marketing and management types get involved in creative decisions you know the wheels are going to fall off. Including those people from two different companies plus the creative vision of Stephen King and the Director and there is just now way all those decision makers can create anything cohesive or impressive.
I’m not going to spoil any major plot points of the book, but I’ll tell you an amazing scene later in the book series. Roland and Eddie (who is pretty trained up as a Gunslinger) are in a gunfight and they do this maneuver where they are back to back, and while one is unloading on the enemy the other is behind reloading, and they rotate and change places, without a break. It’s pretty badass.
I read the books years ago, but never back to back in proper order. Still I would say they are great books, but could been improved by an adaptation: More of Rolands backstory, Johnn Fargo (?) the rebel leader being hyped up but never showing up, Steven King himself being in the book.... Also maybe the should make an animated series insted of life action, it lets them get wild withe the visuals on a budget, and lets them take there time, because the carectars, especialy Jake, can stay the same age forever.
“I’m such a massive Stephen King fan that I’m terrified of screwing it up.” But he was perfectly okay with screwing up Watchmen? Okay. Why is he still working??
@@SticklsOfDoom Neil Gaiman? Watchmen was by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons. That's another author that pretty much hates 99% of movie/TV adaptations from his work.
I liked this movie purely because Idris Elba's gunslinging was SO COOL. He was a legitimately cool character, not like those characters in movies where it feels like the creators are trying so hard to /convince/ us they're cool that it feels forced and they seem lame. Idris' Roland was so effortlessly cool that I felt super invested to learn more about him, and my eyes were always glued to the screen to see what he was going to do next. In that sense, the movie didn't disappoint me, but then again I also haven't read the books. I actually did feel like I understood the plot and world-building, but it did feel a little rushed with the world-building explanations towards the end; it felt like the movie was burying the lede.
to be fair the tropes of "jake found this house cuz a power told him about it" is sort of a staple inthe kingverse, either someone with the shining gets visions or is told about something, and "just happened to run into roland" is a what we call FATE or DESTINY, a lot of this can be hand waved with "greater power works in mysterious ways" as seems to happen on a LOT of the steven king universe, i mean that's a KEY PLOT POINT to the stand, everyone is drawn to mother abigail because of dreams they have about her and her telling them to come to her in bolder colorado, i mean it doesn't get less nuanced than that
The world of the Dark Tower is INCREDIBLE. Easy to screw up if you don't love and understand the source material, but very easy to do right if you do. The studio clearly did not...
I'm like you. I also didn't read the books but I did see the movie when it came out and I bought it in 4K because I liked it so much. It's like all my favorite genres rolled into one movie
As a heads up King has been doing an expanded universe for years, way before it was a thing. Don’t worry every book is self contained. Each has its own story but if you do read enough you’ll find Easter egg. So just a clue King is HUGE on crossover. Practically all his book he has written the Dark Tower touches. I’ll also tell you DO NOT need to read his other books to understand and enjoy the Dark Tower series. There are just so many connections that the King universe feels real
i do agree with the idea that roland bouncing the bullet to kill the man in black, could have been handled better like if he'd had to do something like that earlier in the show to kill two different enemies or something, then realised it could work against TMIB, then it'd be fine, but unless i'm miss remembering, we never see him use ricochet shot, anywhere else in the film, so i do agree with that point
The worst mistake the makers of this movie made was that they killed the boy mother. When that happened I thought to myself that this movie was a huge disappointment and I would never watch it again.
I saw this in theaters with my mom when it came out. Literally all I remember is Idris Elba's terrible accent, which is a bummer since I love him as an actor.
I just remember being annoyed as hell that the mom character was seen as an awful horrible person for wanting to get son, who was engaging in maladaptive daydreaming and actual violent outbursts, into therapy. And the kid seemed pretty unbothered by her death
They should have made a film in conversation with the history of film in the way the books are about books. The Dark Tower in this instance would be Hollywood - the nexus of all these worlds, as in the books, the tower is King.
I really enjoyed the movie. There was little profanity, which was my biggest gripe for the book series and the movie started out with the horn being solid, indicating a break in the cycle of the original series, therefore, the movie could take a new direction.
It's such a shame that the movie ended up this way. I've always felt that the first book would have made a great movie on it's own. Fewer character and a smaller scope gives time to introduce everything and really build the world and its mysteries. This deserves a reboot like Suicide Squad. Fingers crossed, I guess😔
I desecrated this movie after having see it on release dayback, now after a 2nd watch I think you can enjoy it as long you don't know the source material, the movie can be fun and entertaining. HOWEVER if you read the books, don't touch it.
Accuracy to the source material doesn't necessarily matter, the adaptation just needs to be entertaining and coherent. It's why Men In Black got away with the alien-only lore despite that being a small part of the original comics, featuring ghosts, the supernatural, and demons.
CROATIA MENTIONED 🇭🇷 Game of Thrones and modern Star Wars both being extremely popular initially but crashing and burning and being partially filmed in Dubrovnik, Croatia in the mid 2010’s is an odd coincidence
I have a pretty sturdy stomach but The Gunslinger was too dark and violent for me to make it through. So the idea of making this PG13 is so absolutely bad. Good grief. Also, great burn on those Amazon Originals lol

Including those people from two different companies plus the creative vision of Stephen King and the Director and there is just now way all those decision makers can create anything cohesive or impressive.
Flanagan’s Doctor Sleep movie is the best Dark Tower adaptation so far.
I LOVEEEE your videos. You are criminally underrated
Thank you!
“I’m such a massive Stephen King fan that I’m terrified of screwing it up.”
But he was perfectly okay with screwing up Watchmen? Okay. Why is he still working??
Well, since he didn't say how he was such a massive Neil Gaiman fan, I'd say he was probably a little less worried about botching Watchmen
@@SticklsOfDoom Neil Gaiman? Watchmen was by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons. That's another author that pretty much hates 99% of movie/TV adaptations from his work.
@ It was Allan Moore who wrote it, but point taken.
@ivanagustinortiz5237 which is funny, because Moore is _notorious_ for butchering other people's works whenever he's allowed to touch them.
You mean the show that won 11 Emmys?
Wind Through the Keyhole was a great standalone story. I loved all the books. But that was something special.
I actually did feel like I understood the plot and world-building, but it did feel a little rushed with the world-building explanations towards the end; it felt like the movie was burying the lede.
to be fair the tropes of "jake found this house cuz a power told him about it" is sort of a staple inthe kingverse, either someone with the shining gets visions or is told about something, and "just happened to run into roland" is a what we call FATE or DESTINY, a lot of this can be hand waved with "greater power works in mysterious ways" as seems to happen on a LOT of the steven king universe, i mean that's a KEY PLOT POINT to the stand, everyone is drawn to mother abigail because of dreams they have about her and her telling them to come to her in bolder colorado, i mean it doesn't get less nuanced than that
Do The Mummy 2017.
This one is going to be a FEAST.
I just know it 😂.
The world of the Dark Tower is INCREDIBLE. Easy to screw up if you don't love and understand the source material, but very easy to do right if you do. The studio clearly did not...
Idris Elba deserved better. He's such a talented actor but his agent keeps screwing him up smh.
Yes, Chaos walking. I know what’s coming for next week.
i think we all know why that one failed but i still love hearing people trash it lol
The best thing that came out of this movie were Jeremy Jahns's impressions of Matthew Mccounaghey 😂
Thanks for covering this.
Also for your future videos, can you please cover The Darkest Minds, as well as the 5th Wave?
I'm like you. I also didn't read the books but I did see the movie when it came out and I bought it in 4K because I liked it so much. It's like all my favorite genres rolled into one movie
I've binged every video on this channel. Your content is AMAZING. Any plans for doing City of Ember?
As a heads up King has been doing an expanded universe for years, way before it was a thing. Don’t worry every book is self contained. Each has its own story but if you do read enough you’ll find Easter egg.
So just a clue King is HUGE on crossover. Practically all his book he has written the Dark Tower touches. I’ll also tell you DO NOT need to read his other books to understand and enjoy the Dark Tower series. There are just so many connections that the King universe feels real
How did they even wanted to launch a franchise when they rushed the whole seven books plot in a movie like... what did they planned to do next 😭
The greatest crime is that we've yet to see Susannah Dean on the screen. The most kick-sss heroine ever written (at least for me).
i do agree with the idea that roland bouncing the bullet to kill the man in black, could have been handled better like if he'd had to do something like that earlier in the show to kill two different enemies or something, then realised it could work against TMIB, then it'd be fine, but unless i'm miss remembering, we never see him use ricochet shot, anywhere else in the film, so i do agree with that point
Idris was the mistake. The first one at least
60 mil budget for a dark tower film was hilarious to begin with
It was made for the people who didn't read the books, that's why it bombed.
The worst mistake the makers of this movie made was that they killed the boy mother. When that happened I thought to myself that this movie was a huge disappointment and I would never watch it again.
As someone who loves the books this film annoyed me
I saw this in theaters with my mom when it came out. Literally all I remember is Idris Elba's terrible accent, which is a bummer since I love him as an actor.
Mad that budget concerns were a thing in a story that happens in a desert!
Bonus points for actually using "adaptation" instead of the senseless and much more common "adaption".
Face reveal🤯 0:36
My friend was worried for me walking out of the theater xD
As i was for her after RE the final chapter
I just remember being annoyed as hell that the mom character was seen as an awful horrible person for wanting to get son, who was engaging in maladaptive daydreaming and actual violent outbursts, into therapy. And the kid seemed pretty unbothered by her death
You are right, if the pilot Amazon looked at was worse than the Rings of Power, it had to be really bad!
I read the books like a year before the movie came out and boy was I disappointed.. what they did with the material was just brutal
At least J.J and Damon Lindenlof couldn't put their paws in this. It could have been much worse. I hope Flanagan can pull the TV show off though.
They knew it would be bad, as there was almost no advertising for it when it came out
"Clue for next week's video": I'm gonna guess Chaos Walking???
Not having Eddie Dean and Susannah in this movie was criminal.
Pretty much the same thing that always happens. They tried to cram in way too much into a single movie and couldn't decide what to focus on.
They should have made a film in conversation with the history of film in the way the books are about books. The Dark Tower in this instance would be Hollywood - the nexus of all these worlds, as in the books, the tower is King.
Great video! And yes you need to read the books!
I always imagined Clint Eastwood as the gunslinger when reading the books for some reason. Maybe I am just old now.
I never even heard of this movie. Which is crazy cuz if Matthew McConaughey & Idris Elba costarred in a movie today i cant imagine it not being a hit.
I desecrated this movie after having see it on release dayback, now after a 2nd watch I think you can enjoy it as long you don't know the source material, the movie can be fun and entertaining.
HOWEVER if you read the books, don't touch it.
As one friend said about this movie :
« They took a Stephen King’s novel and adapted it to look like a random book from James Patterson… »
They need to do it again with Clint Eastwoods son as Roland.
I love this story. It deserves a great investment.
Ron Howard? THE DARK TOWER??? 😆😆😆😆😆
Considering that the film is ment to be a sequel to the books, I don't know why they cast Idris Elba as Roland for obvious reasons.
i’d love to see a video on now you see me! & fallen
Now You See Me is so good. I don't know how it did at that box office tho.
