its weird watching the CVT stay at constant revs as the speedo climbs... The best things about the WRX is the cornering anyway. So much emphasis is placed on the straight line stuff here... I've been lucky enough for a few passenger laps in a new WRX with rally driver Cody Crocker. They are awsome.......
+David Webb Hi, We would like to provide some sort of footage showing cornering ability/g-force of each car we review, but it would mean going to a proving ground once or twice a week - we simply don't have the budget for that. We produce these quick 0-100km/h and engine sound videos to supplement our more in-depth written reviews (where we talk about cornering). We also do them so users can get an idea of general performance/sound and compare with other new cars etc. You are right about the WRX. It handles a lot better than it goes, and certainly more impressive than its 0-100km/h time. Hope this helps.
+David Webb Yes & Imo, a bad choice on Subi's part. Although performance is still 'quick', the CVT is the best way to take ALL the fun & inspiration out of driving this performance/sports car. Fail.
Noticed people been debating why Subaru install a CVT. Reason is quite simple, Subaru is not a large scale company like the Mitsubishi group or the VW, it actually costs lot more to develop a good dual clutch system. Second things is Subaru been working with CVT and helping Toyota making CVT transmission for the past decades. The japanese market WRX only offers the CVT and the recent released Levorg Sti wagon that extracts 300 BHP only has the CVT as well. The six speed manual will definitely be around, but I think the majority market will still prefer the CVT, giving the obvious reason that most people don't really race or drift their cars. But again if was me, regardless the situation I still think manual is the better choice for driving pleasure.
thats strange back in the evo vs wrx days it was the opposite and Evos has to be more extreme because of it. Subaru engineered the flaws out of the Wrx because Subaru is actually a bigger company than Mitsubishi or at least their motor division.
well, the difference in acceleration between the manual and the cvt could only be attributed to the fact that the cvt equipped wrx is 100 kgs heavier...
Jordan Mosher Basically, I want my car to actually last, and keep good torque figures across a wider range, spool faster, be more efficient, more responsive and not sound like a 3 cylinder that's half blown up. There's more to a Subaru than that stupid grumble
idk mines pretty stock and I know someone in my neighborhood with a cvt one and I pretty much gap him like to the point where I ask if it's even the same car. maybe with a tune the cvt would be faster but on stock tune the fa20 power delivery is just too weird for the CVT, and the weight it adds so it's like a half second slower at everything than the manual, 0-60 quarter mile, roll race doesn't matter.
Automatics don't get the mpg stats of the CVT. Plus, most of the hate aimed at the cvts is largely aesthetic. They sound weird. As long as you stay under the torque limit, the cvts tend to out perform the autos.
After having driven quite a few CVTs (or trying to) at the limit, and owning a car with a DSG box, it escapes me how and why the decision was made to put a CVT in a WRX. CVT is essentially the anti-christ of transmissions.
I’m amazed, despite their known issues with reliability, that 90% of Japanese cars use CVTs for whatever reason. They’re just woeful. They should’ve just stuck to 6-speed autos 😭 I’m glad Mazda still sticks to normal autos
these subarus will launch great thats why they are good in short races but after 100kmh they dont stand a chance. still love em for what they are though dont give me wrong
In the real world the cvt actually performs very well. Most people wont have time to press 100 buttons to engage launch control or be willing to do redline clutch dumps. So in street starts the "soft" launching cvts are on equal playing field
+Marek Sumguy according to this video, I had some confusion reading the attached link www.drivearabia.com/carprices/uae/subaru/subaru-impreza-wrx/2016/
+Totally Winning Pro Gamer As much as I love manual, DCTs is the future of cars. I'm a guy who sits on both fences, on one: I enjoy the almost instant gear changes and it will improve acceleration times, But then I'll miss me actually driving the car. The japanese aren't too keen on DCTs though, and I do prefer a manual WRX. But instead of a stupid CVT I was suggesting a DCT, not that I wanted it....
some people cant drive manual or have a disability that prevents them from driving manual(myself) wanted a wrx but my dodgy feet and ankles cant handle clutching in stop start peak traffic hours......ended up with a DCT car instead
CVT is actually more reliable and has less heat and moving parts. The CVT is more effecient and is much lighter than a traditional transmission, so more power too wheels. Trust me subaru knows what they are doing with the CVTs. The CVT is the future of transmissions.
CVT is the future ? Haha lmao there is a reason why every automaker is getting rid of them . They are good for eco boxes on 4 wheels but after 80 mph they’re dead , not to mention how weird it is accelerating when the engine rpm is constant ...
sold my 2015 sti for the new type r, sharper, more responsive, better in the corners and much better acceleration, subaru need to up their game if they dont want to be left behind
Most of the advantage in 0-100 the manual has is in the launch. Redline clutch dumps + grip makes for a crazy fast launch. 5.9 on the manual can only be achieved with the clutch dump but you will toast your clutch pretty quickly if you do it everytime you wanna send it. If you did a soft / medium launch the difference between the cvt is actually not a lot. Also if you have driven a manual subie before you will know that it is hard to get off the line without bogging it. Realistically in real world driving the CVT is actually the better transmission if you are looking at it objectively. You can consistently pull 6.6 seconds 0-100 at the drop of a hat. The CVT also holds boost as there is no changing gears, again in real world driving it has its advantages. Plus you don't get the infamous rev hang and get better fuel economy, which helps cause it drinks premium. I have driven the CVT WRX and i think the gearbox is underrated. I think most people who hate on the cvt have not even sat behind the wheel of one and driven it. There are other videos on youtube showing that a cvt can easily keep up with the manual from a roll on. The WRX is definately sharper with the manual but the CVT makes the car an overall round performer because it gives you 90% of the performance of the manual and the refinement / smoothness and fuel economy of a cvt. Just my take on it
I have a CVT and it absolutely sucks and I hate it. It's soulless, the stock tune is crap, it's a weak transmission design in general, it feels fragile though the engine is very strong, and in the case of the WRX, the manual gets the better MPG. It's possible to get over 32 MPG in that car. My transmission is also starting to slip a little at only 41k miles, so yeah, I'm convinced never to buy a vehicle with a CVT ever again until there's nothing left but them.
My favourite generation of the modern WRX. On the downside, I feel that the CVT for the WRX is a bit too slow and doesn't suit it in my opinion. If the WRX had the same 6 speed automatic as the Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ then it would make a great car.
That's from the guy taking the video. He obviously has no clue what he's doing. The CVT pulls way harder than they show and stays closer to redline than that while getting on it.
I raced a CVT wrx in my wifes front wheel drive 1.6T RSV Astra and beat it... I came here to have a look to see why... got the answer thanks If you think this is a joke then go look on this site to see what the Astra rsv does it does 0 - 100.. I would get the manual WRX...
Cvt should only be for cars that are meant to drive smooth and relaxed. More sporty cars like this should not have cvt. Not only does it not sound as good but performance wise it’s not as good as dual clutch
Tristen Wu yeah but it works differently and is much lighter and smaller than a cvt. It’s hard to explain and u will need to read about it urself but it works in a weird way
+Daniel Vicaretti Hi, As usual, we tried various styles. It didn't make a difference in this case whether shifting at 93-94km/h or letting it bounce on the rev limiter. The momentum at that speed carries it through to 100km/h with no measurable difference. Hope this helps.
+Daniel Vicaretti A lot of it is probably down to weight. Like most cars, they are getting heavier and heavier, with more and more luxuries and electronics added on. They need to keep up by adding more power. In the case of the WRX, it produced 195kW in 2008 and weighed 1370kg (tare). Now it weighs 1429kg (tare) and produces 197kW. In saying that, fuel consumption has dropped, from 10.4L/100km to 9.2L/100km. PS. Thanks for the feeback!
+jing713 Agreed, there's no way these numbers can be correct. The WRX has pulled off times under 5 seconds in the past. Completely dependent on the driver really.
Not a fan of CVTs but I think you are driving it wrong. Just go from idle to hammering it, you power braking it is making it falsely “upshift”, functionally removing the lower ratios. Pretty sure your driving is hampering its function.
We always time vehicles in various ways, including with and without the brake. In this case we recorded a quicker time by building the revs on the brake. Keep in mind we only show a demo of one run (we do 3-4 runs or more with all vehicles to find the quickest time).
I honestly have no idea which car is MT and CVT, the editing is incredibly overdone to the point where you don't even want to watch, a shame, seems like this was the video i wanted!
i have a 2017 wrx cvt, i dont see his testing being accurate at all, first of my cvt have paddle shifters don't all wrx cvt have it? so why not put it in manual mode to shift at optimal power since factory setup shift sux. really I-mode was faster than S# mode? and what happen to testing S-mode? which i find the best while in manual mode. cvt is not for racing, but is not as slow as shown in this video, i feel it performs real good. "edit" just noticed cvt have been revised since then, 2017 simulate shifting while in S# mode , i notice this one didn't. so i can see maybe the testing were correct, but the software of the cvt have changed since then. so i can see how my 2017 cvt act totally different compared to the 2015

@@Neel-1 4.9-5.1 is what the bone stock 2009-2014MY did for 0-60. No idea why anybody would buy a new WRX with CVT and even with a 6 speed the new engine and Turbo just to not keep up with the older models. the 2015 has 5.2 0-60 with manual which is good but still a tiny bit slower than the 2011 WRX at 4.9. As it gets newer it should be better not slower. Also some will say well if you go stage 2 the newer are better. Nope still worse on all front proven by this. At least on Cobbs dyno, mod for mod, the new wrx is weaker. 2015 230awhp vs 2011 250awhp. 2015 wrx stage 2 266awhp vs 2013 wrx stage 2 295awhp. My real life comparisons reaffirm this with my wrx and my friends. Makes sense really. The 2014 wrx had every bit of power the sti had and that ate into sales. The 2009-14 wrx was underrated from the factory. My advice. Find a good condistionn 2009-14 and buy one. So..Much...Better. Unless you want all the gay shit like adaptive Cruise Control and all that fuss, then just buy a Toyota.
yes they should. so people wich can drive manual, still can drive an wrx. I'm not gonna explain to you, cause you don't care anyway. even if I know you don't see it that way. shouldn't it be up to everyone and drive whatever they want.
They've been selling wrx sti auto seens 2003 or something. They need an auto to compete with other cars like BMW, Audi, Mercedes, Volvo and I can keep on. But they need a better "auto, a double clutch like the evo x for example. So everyone can enjoy the sti

+Pete Shur Well in the US WRX Limited has Dual Climate Control and Heated Seat. But I don't really need Heated Seat but I would love Premium have Dual Climate Control as standard all models.
+Pete Shur No problem. Because other countries always have different feature than US. Plus I have CVT as a daily driver for winter and work and vacation.

Why do the hazard lights flash when you brake hard, in this case 100-0 km/h. Is it a safety feature?
Yes, but it's not a standard for US. Wish it was, taken from racing.
+DreiZ Ah okay. Wow, that sucks the US removed that safety standard.
It was also seen on hot version (some japanese sport car testing on track) when the ABS responds when braking
they are both stock?
is the manual louder a bit?!!!
+Elie Nehme I think the rev limiter on the CVT is at like 4k
The wrx acceleration doesn't zazz me. Needs a high rev fuck your clutch drop to get 5.9. A half the price (currently on second hand market) nothing exciting v36 370gt can do that without a launch
3:45 that is not the cleanest 1st to 2nd shift I've ever seen.
Yeah I think d means damaged in that case
My cvt got a 5.5 learn to shift
91 octane or 95 octane fuel?
these times dont seem accurate, i own the cvt wrx and it still runs 5.5 when using the launch control
+Jeremy How? Best I've done is 6.1
BasedNeel Where do you live?
Jeremy NY, I'm not above sea level or anything. It's weird.
There should be no difference between I and S# modes. You are doing something very wrong.
The music is horrible it's giving me headache
Will it make a good everyday driver?
I have the 2020 and it’s fun driving to work with this thing
They shouldn't even make this car in automatic.
yes they should. so people wich can drive manual, still can drive an wrx. I'm not gonna explain to you, cause you don't care anyway.
even if I know you don't see it that way.
shouldn't it be up to everyone and drive whatever they want.
petercivic The amount of people buying these cars in automatic vs manual is not worth the production.
They've been selling wrx sti auto seens 2003 or something.
They need an auto to compete with other cars like BMW, Audi, Mercedes, Volvo and I can keep on.
But they need a better "auto, a double clutch like the evo x for example.
So everyone can enjoy the sti
There is no STI with an automatic transmission.
+Sam Levin in Japan there is
A WRX with a CVT? seriously?
Baha T
I think it's better with a Dual Clutch
The intro is terrible. in fact i jumped to writing this comment before even finishing the video. the "artistic" camera panning is unbearable. the techno music is awful. overall by the first minute im sick of this video.....
its a shame wrx doesnt have dual climate and heated seats
It has heated seats in the premium and limited models, just not dual climate which is annoying
+Pete Shur Well in the US WRX Limited has Dual Climate Control and Heated Seat. But I don't really need Heated Seat but I would love Premium have Dual Climate Control as standard all models.
+Big Mike Mike H didn't know the limited had dual climate, I live in New York and have a premium model myself. Thanks for the info
+Pete Shur No problem. Because other countries always have different feature than US. Plus I have CVT as a daily driver for winter and work and vacation.
+Pete Shur I rather have this CVT over other standard CVT out there. This CVT has 6 and 8 speed depend the selection of SI mode. I love this new design and the new motor 2.0L compare to 2.5L(always have problems).
Not really a great comparison. Not on the same street for the comparison so the echoing etc.. is all different. Flawed comparison
Hate all CVTs, cars with them sounds like gas pedal is stuck, terrible loss of power and they dont seem reliable to me. Manual or Dual Clutch automatic only for me
Nice like to dislike ratio
The fact you need to launch at 6000rpm to squeeze a 0-100 of 5.9s out is nasty. Take my lazy auto g37 that's quicker without launching
Wait which one is the cvt and the manuel
Manual - Red
CVT - Blue
My WRX 2006 MAKE FRON 0 TO 100 KM IN JUST 6 SECONDS
which is MT? red one? or blue one?
Red
I wanna know what the cvt does 0-100 km/h in manual mode. is it faster?
It’s actually quicker in auto
Mode unfortunately. The manual mode feels quicker but it’s not
@@dundas112 Thank you 🙂
+petercivic I wasn't commenting to you.
all i hear is electronic farts
Your scooby sounds like a honda
