I am glad Nick, comes out with you to help make these videos. Some of us have been here here long enough to watch him grow up on your show. Anyway he is blessed to have such a great Dad.👍
Dave!!! It's great to see another video from you. I've learned so much over the years watching you and listening to your stories and opinions. Thanks for the camera work Nick!
I think the first tarp would work really well turned 90 degrees, ie corner to corner rather than side to side, and would need only two or maybe 3 ribs to hold it out instead of 4, plus it would be long enough to cover the whole hammock. That second set up I've used many times over the years for my camp kitchens. It's got so much space underneath to fit everyone and everything for cooking and eating plus it's "kidsafe". My experience camping with kids has taught me that they don't always look where they're running and guy lines pose a major trip hazard for them. A camp kitchen can already be a dangerous place but a rambunctious kid playing tag can bring the whole mess tent down. Great video, David! Thanks for taking the time to share your experience with us!
Good thinking on turning that first tarp. I'll just have to reposition some paracord tie outs. Also good point on kids running into guylines. I'm glad you liked the video and thanks for watching my friend
I can see how this kind of setup would really be good with multiple people camping, so people would not be tripping all over each other. Considering how people are so anxious to get things done, your point about taking time to enjoy the process is spot on. It{s obvious you put a lot of thought into this. Thanks for passing your ideas along!
Thanks! I doubt I'd ever be on Alone. It's takes way too much time out of a persons life and I bet the health effects on your body are really bad. It would be fun to try tho.
Love the set ups. To help make things quicker finding the longer sides I use a permanent marker and write the length on each end of my tarps. Great video guys.
Nobody has more fun in the woods than Nick and Dave!!! These were awesome setups! That first one with the wooden hangers reminded me if when I saw blair witch 28 years ago or wherever that came out on vhs. I was workin for the usfs in lassen Northern California at the time. “Why don’t ya just sleep in a tent?” “Why don’t you just stay home”🤣🤣😃 Thanks a million guys!! Take care and be good. NQU
Great video Dave. Your ideas and inventions that you come up with to help you in different situations are awesome. Also, it was great to see Nick. He's an excellent son. You did a wonderful job raising him. His humor, priceless (like you). Splendid.
Those are two great tarp arrangements. And that was a great point about doing things just for the fun of it. A bad day setting up unnecessarily complicated (but still cool) tarp structures beats a good day at work every time.
I dig the second configuration. Great for my huge sil nylon tarp I put up for the kitchen at camp. It becomes the place where everyone hangs because everyone is always hungry! Lol. I can't tell you how many times people have choked themselves or tripped over the guy lines! Thanks for sharing Dave!
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it. Oh man, the more the people that are around then the more tripping that always happens. This is the perfect set up to curb that. Thanks for watching brother
Bushcraft Dr. Dave at its best! Thank you for your ideas my brother! Stay safe and keep having fun! PS: Tomorrow's video is dedicated to you, for teaching me how important a sewing machine is for making my own equipment!
You've invented the floating ridgeline and a sturdy and stable drop leg add-on. Both can be modified to fit many sizes. And no more tripping over guy lines when nature calls a 0300 for us over 50 dudes! I hope you patent these. Thanks as always for the video, always a treat.
Incredible ! I never thought about either one of these set ups. I noticed the side to side rocking motion while Nick was laying in the hammock. All he needed was a lullaby and he would be good to go for the night. Thanks so much for a well executed shelter video using tarp configurations that do not produce a lot of wear on the tarps. I wish you and Nick much happy camping and God's blessings. Later. A friend always !
That was two great ways to set up a tarp without “trip-lines” . ;-) I specifically like the second one. Nice to see you and Nick out and about. Thanks for sharing. Take care and keep having fun.
Another great day in the woods with Papa Dave. Poor Nick is going to go on strike pretty soon if you start feeding him or at least make some coffee when you head out on your adventures. After all these shelter videos, you guys should to a challenge video where you bring a mystery box of goodies to create each of your favourite shelter designs for an overnighter.
Any day in the woods is a good day! Im glad you liked it. Nick eats six times a day no matter what I do. Lol. I like that challenge idea! Thanks for watching
Hey Dave and Nick! Everybody has already said all the good comments and I don't want to repeat. So I'll just say you have a unique thinking process, and we love it!!! Thanks for sharing all your ideas. First shelter for one person, second for 2-4 is my take on it. Both good!
Great video Dave. I like the way you set up those tarps without any lines to bump into, great concept. If you love being outside you'll definitely not worry about taking the time to set a camp up properly. Thank you for sharing.
Dave, I love your creativity. Aside from another great video, you just invented the “Dude Garter Belt” for your machete set up! Folks, if Dave ever puts a patent on his creations, he is gonna be a rich man! 😂👍 Love ya buddy! Keep ‘em coming, y’all have a great weekend! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣👍
Thanks! Lol, I gotta remember that dude garter belt. No matter what we call it, it's definitely the most comfortable machete leg strap I've tried so far. Thanks for the comments and thanks for watching Julian
I love these Dave! What fun the first one is, I can see older kids really enjoying making this, and the second is just excellent. You always come up with something unique and fun. Thank you for taking us out on your trips. As always sending Much love to you both. God bless 💕🙏🏻
Fantastic to hear that! People who love crafting and setting things up outdoors will definitely enjoy that first set up. Thanks for watching Sheila and may God bless you too my friend
I really like the 2nd one. If you are in a hurry to get to the chow table or too sleepy to watch for guy lines that one is the safest I've seen. Thanks for the video. Keep up the good work. Wish you would come to the N. W.
Yep, that 2nd one is all around more simple. I'd love to visit the great NW some time. Possibly in fall or spring. Thanks for the comments and thanks for watching Rex
U just one imaginative person Dave, always lie in wait for the next one.in Australia is just a bit cold n wet to enjoy the outdoors, so u r my saviour on the long winter nights!
The second set up seems like less work. That's a bonus.! Nice thing is you can adjust it to a much lower pitch to make it stealthier. Or adjust the angle of attack for current or expected weather conditions. Best thing is no guy lines to trip over. And lastly, this wouldn't be a Dave video if it didn't have rope and a machete. The only thing missing is Chef Dave going full gourmet out in the woods. And to Nick, you have one wicked sense of humor. I appreciate that. Great vid guys, keep up the good work. I came for the fun in the woods and have never been disappointed. See y'all in about two weeks.
Thumbs up!!! All caught up on your videos ... didn't realize I was so far behind. Thanks for all of the effort you put into these genius, informative shows. Clark
great video guys, outstanding energy & enthusiasm. as an ordinary straight male i will confess i find your accent absolutely enchanting (compared to the aussie-english i hear everyday) i could listen to you talk about just anything for hours.. a guilty pleasure of mine watching you explain all the intricacies of what your getting into & about to or possibly probably etc etc very practical & helps refine my own approach to things I encounter in the scrub
Thanks Mac, we are glad you liked it. You ain't alone, I'm often told I have a very different accent. Round here it's even got a name. It's deemed an Appalachian accent. Take care and thanks for watching
The first one looks great, as long as the wind stays down. Maybe one last hank around the perimeter to tie the stick ends together and to the trees., so it’s more of a structural unit. This is the iffiest setup I’ve seen. Nick’s right, your hammock will collect rain at head and foot. The second one with more trees looks much more secure and offers better coverage. I love how you’re always thinking and experimenting!
Awesome set up. Best gear for the job. Love it. I didn’t know they called it a guyline either.I just recently bought some small backpackers tarps just like that. You got things super custom. I don’t think anyone could pick up one of your packs and figure out how to operate. Great work guys. Much aloha my friends🐸🍺🔪🔥
Thanks Johnny, I'm glad you liked it. Lol, I bet there's a lot of handmade gear I have that no one could figure out how to use. Thanks for the comments and thanks for watching
I have never tried a suspended set up like this, but I have used tent poles folded to create a half dome set up that gets secured either to a stick walls driven in the ground, or a couple of fallen over trees for height and wind proofing around the edges. With a small army basha, you get a sizeable shelter size for cooking sleeping under but you do have walls on each side so it's not quite as open but sometimes you dont want it to be too open either. I like what you're doing here but it gives me other ideas using the same principles.
I used saplings to create a half dome set up very similar to what some indigenous peoples used. I simply pulled them together pulled them down into an arch and attached that side of the tarp with paracord and staked off the other side. Voila! half dome. The beauty it was adjustable. I could make it as loose or tight as needed and no guy lines to trip over. I've done this with a tent (and I hate tents) to a bivvy to a hammock. This much better than a simple lean to as it at least gives 3 sided protection.
I like both. "Tarp" coat hangers. - ha. Go greener so they don't snap. Shhhh, know what I mean, Vern? The second one is cool. It gives you a place to hang out without guy lines or the confinement of a tent! Plus, shade during the day OR protection from rain. - Sweet! Thank you.
Dave … Watch all your videos; haven’t commented in a while. Excellent idea and video!!! Love the second set up!!! You are right; options are limitless!!! Continue to enjoy your videos; please keep them coming!!! Y’all be safe and God bless!!! Chuck Knight from Buffalo, Texas. 🤠👨🌾✝️🙏🐩
I like the idea David. No guy- lines going to the ground to trip over. There are available now, small racket lines with quick button release. They’re rated strong enough and you can change out the rope that come with then to longer lengths if need. May be interesting to experiment with and see if faster and easier 🤷♂️ Thanks maaan
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it. I did get some ratchet straps and used them on a suspended grill years ago. I've been thinking about trying them on a roof or bed but haven't gotten around to it yet. Thanks for watching
My friend and I have made similar shelters like the second one, deep winter and also torrential rain. We hung two hammocks under it, nearly fully enclosed all around, sat in our Helinox chairs and fed the Biolite stove so we had fire, warmth, cooking. There’s no tent made you can do that in that is still packable. Great video…I’ll admit I have machete envy…wow that thing is beautiful! Another killer video!
THANK YOU VERY MUCH - it is really inspiring me to see you Dave keep on inventing and researching new ways of doing things - Have anice weekend Dear Dave & Nick 🌲🌲🌲
You are very welcome and I'm glad you liked it! I've actually got a whole notebook of ideas to invent so there's plenty more in store. You have a great weekend too and thanks for watching
@@Reallybigmonkey1 I like your vids because you make a mistake catch it and laugh and show what NOT to do. Humble, in your way of doing things. Like you say to your kids go out side and play !! thats what you show us with your videos.
Great Add On Pouch With Velcro ! Always A Pleasure To See What Is Coming Up Next, Many Thanks For Another Top-Notch Video, Davey, Great Filming Nick ! Happy Trails From The Sunny Maritimes In Canada. ATB T God Bless
Hmmm ..... Well , once again , you have made me engage what is left of my brain :D You could find just 4 trees spaced right . Then tie a stick / log between each "end " set of trees High . Then go in the " middle " of those limbs tied bewteen the "end " trees and make the ridge line . Then just tie one rope each , "lower" on the trees on the length for the edge tarp support .
I really loved that second set up. I keep my puppies on leashes and they won't get tangled up under this one when I am in my hammock. Of course they want to be in the hammock with me sometimes too, I see great potential here.
Never boring with dave and nick!!! Love this concept even though little time consuming but hey what else are you really doing in the woods other than building an awesome camp. Good job sir!! Also I'd like to know where you got the pouch for the machete concept? Really do enjoy your show time for some cooking and coffee hehehe!
Thanks, We are glad you liked it. To me time consuming ia all a part of having fun in the outdoors. Ive been making and testing pouches for years on machete sheaths. The one is this video is just another 100% handmade one on my home sewing machine. Thanks for watching
Thanks for creating and publishing another video on an interesting topic. I look forward very much to watching it a bit later. I hope that all is well with you and Nick... _John_
Dave back at tarp shelters! One of the first of your videos I saw you were making tarp shelters, loved it then and still love it now. This whole video I kept thinking you could add a wall or bug net and then at the end you mentioned walls. I used to comment before I watched entire videos, then I learned it was best to wait. Can’t wait to see what you come up with next.
When youre in and out for one or two nights, tarp shelters rule! Mini log cabins are cool but not good if you dont own the property. Im glad you liked it. Thanks for watching Dan
@@Reallybigmonkey1 I was thinking about tarp walls. I agree that mini log cabins are cool, but there’s something about the challenge of using tarps, strings, and bungee cords.
Hi Dave and Nick, Wow! what a great idea! Thanks!, that has to be the coolest tarp set up I've ever seen, I do like the bigger tarp set up more. That would be such a great way to set up a tarp and even have a way to attach sidewalls. That's amazing! Don't think I would have ever thought of that.👍
Great setup! On the second shelter maybe some carabiners on the tarp grommets would make threading the rope easier. I only say this because I can make a real mess out of a long piece of rope after I unbundle it. No guy lines gives the shelter a whole different feel. Definitely more fun than reruns of Roseanne!
Both are excellent setups! The lack of guylines is great for families especially with little kids who love to run around.. ive had that issue a few times hahaha always nice to see you two out having fun in the woods!
Thanks Brother, I'm glad you liked them. I've tripped over plenty of guylines myself after dark. I love using these set ups. Take care and thanks for watching
I’m going to try those two set ups got. Chance this past weekend to take my kids and grand kids camping and had a really great time I showed some fire making techniques
Thanks Dave and Nick! These setups are really Far Out! Can definitely see some bug netting and staying out for an extended camping trip. I’d like to send you some good Louisiana coffee. Got a P O box? Rock On Fellers!
Interesting setups! Watching your channel is like peaking through the window of the R&D department, except outdoors. I agree with the fact that you could make and sell some of your creations. Pretty sure that would take the fun out of it if it becomes a Job! Be safe and Thanks.
Thanks! I'm glad you liked it. Years ago I attempted to make and sell gear and honestly it was miserable and took all of fun out of it. If some company backed me and actually produced the items now that might be a different story! Thanks for the comments and thanks for watching my friend
Wonderful shelter ❤️ I enjoy your videos man and thank you for taking the time to make videos for us 😀 you take care and I will see you on the next video. Terry
Great to watch you both again and really good setups, both. I was mostly impressed by the v cut in those sticks though as never thought of that! Not so much for the hammock cover but as sharpening the ends and sticking them in the ground for a tarp frame. Possibly for those people who can't do without a tent😃. You are right, of course, this is all about fun as well as education, of which you do a fantastic job of both. Many thanks again both of you. 👍. Nice to see the ferrari being put through its paces too! I can only dream just yet! 😃
When you were setting up the first shelter and you were talking about how this kayos will make sense. For some reason it reminded me of the song Third rock from the sun by Joe Diffie. When he says all other kayos makes perfect sense. Sorry I know that had nothing to do with the video but I couldn't stop thinking about it. Also the first setup got me thinking about me thinking about a different version. If you would sew a bug net around the tarp and then hang it under the sticks or even the ropes of the second shelter so it would form a complete rain/bug shelter while having the big space underneath so in the event of a buggy or rainy time you could even set a camp chair in there during the day for when you wanted to relax without laying down. Heck if you were worried about bugs coming up from the ground you could even lay tarp on the ground in it. I love your unconventional videos they get me thinking and lord knows I need to do more of that lol. Thank you both very much. God bless and stay safe.
Thanks for the comments Rich! Down south a bug net is an essential piece of gear and I do add one to my shelter quite often. And, all my set ups can be modified or just looked at for ideas. Thanks for the comments and thanks for watching brother
Hello David! Maybe it wasn't intentional, but I appreciate that you still have the first tarp set-up in view, while you are beginning the second set-up. Carry on....Happy Trails....
Hey David and Nick, That was almost a real roof! When i saw all those sticks i thought what a lot of work! and you said it lol Take care and enjoy life! (a wiseman said once)
@@Reallybigmonkey1 Always a pleasure my friend. :)) Talk about digging. It's not called back breaking work for nothing.. lol Got to remember this one, in case i'm outta rope.. :)) Cheers and see you in the next one.

David's videos are a great source of inspiration!
Sounds like a good set up! I have a buncha extra tent poles that I've experimented with in the past and they really help out a lot
Thanks!
Love to hear and see Nick. You both are a great team. xoxo
Always great hearing from you, Thanks for watching
Like the second set up better, thanks for ya'lls time doing this video 👍👍
We are glad you liked it and thanks for watching Harold
I like both. "Tarp" coat hangers. - ha. Go greener so they don't snap. Shhhh, know what I mean, Vern? The second one is cool. It gives you a place to hang out without guy lines or the confinement of a tent! Plus, shade during the day OR protection from rain. - Sweet!
Thank you.
Thanks! I'm glad you liked em both! Thanks for the comments and thanks for watching
It's always fun watching the Nutty Professor Dave and his latest adventures 😀 😄 made lunch go swiftly.
Lol, thanks Mark!
Thanks Chuck, I'm glad you liked it and yes, the options are limited by your own imagination! Thanks for watching and may God bless you too brother
@@Reallybigmonkey1 Dave … you are so welcome; again, God bless you and yours!!! Chuck Knight. 👨🌾
Great idea Dave and turned out fantastic.
Always love the new ideas you come up with.
Thanks, Im glad you liked it. Thanks for watching Gary
Sounds like a great set up! And just like you said, no tent can do that. Im glad you liked it. Thanks for watching
Good video and these little tips you put out are awesome and keep us informed on that leg strap because it looks really good and useful.
Thanks Jessie, I'm glad you liked it all. So far I'm really liking that leg strap!
I nearly died laughing at the Roseanne comment!
As the person who tends to trip over guy lines no matter how careful I am, I approve this video. 😉
Fantastic to hear that Jeanette! And thanks for watching
Another awesome and unique adventure project
I'm glad you liked it Mathew!
Shelter #2 is great. Long term 3 day and you not going to get hung up at 3 am like it . Thanks Dave
Well said! I'm glad you liked it and thanks for watching Bill
@@Reallybigmonkey1 I like your vids because you make a mistake catch it and laugh and show what NOT to do. Humble, in your way of doing things. Like you say to your kids go out side and play !! thats what you show us with your videos.
Dave, your videos are the best, I really enjoyed this. Great ideas, thank you for showing us how to set them up!
Thanks Bev! I'm glad you like them. I love filming these set ups and getting feedback. Take care and thanks for watching
Great Add On Pouch With Velcro ! Always A Pleasure To See What Is Coming Up Next, Many Thanks For Another Top-Notch Video, Davey, Great Filming Nick ! Happy Trails From The Sunny Maritimes In Canada. ATB T God Bless
You are very welcome Terry and I'm glad you liked it. That pouch has worked perfectly so far! Thanks for watching and may God bless you too brother
Both were excellent loved watching you set them up. Great video Dave cheers. 😁😁😄😄😁😁😁
Thanks Michelle, Im glad you liked them both! Thanks for watching
Thanks for the video Dave and Nick. This was a lot of fun and very interesting. 👍
You are very welcome Ian and we are glad you liked it
I love tarp camping. And I like both setups equally well for different reasons.
I'm glad you liked them!
Yep, that would definitely work too! Thanks for watching
Thank you two. I always enjoy your Videos. Well wishings. All the best.
Fantastic to hear that and thanks for watching!
I really loved that second set up. I keep my puppies on leashes and they won't get tangled up under this one when I am in my hammock. Of course they want to be in the hammock with me sometimes too, I see great potential here.
Thanks! I'm glad you liked it. Oh with dog leashes this is the perfect set up! Let me know if you try it. Take care and thanks for watching
_John_
You are very welcome my friend and all is well here. See ya soon
Great job as always, thank you guys. So many tips and tricks, I need to watch again.
Thanks Brother! I'm glad you liked it
Great video Dave and Nick!! I love your creativity, you keep all our minds churning with your ideas lol. Keep up the good work👍
Thanks James, I'm glad you liked it. I've got a whole notebook full of ideas. Thanks for watching brother
Don't think I would have ever thought of that.👍
Hello Jeff! We are glad you liked it. Not many set ups can beat that second version. Thanks for watching
So chores are done and a nice mush melon in front of me, and I see a new video! Good to visit and grand video of course😎 the Ramboo
Sounds like a good evening to me! Thanks for watching Ramboo
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it. Yes, carabiners can make things a little easier. Take care and thanks for watching
Nick your comments are the best lol 😂 so entertaining
Lol, hes a real hoot. Thanks for watching Josh!
I always get some great ideas from you guys! I appreciate your time and efforts!
Great to hear that Tim and we are glad you liked it. Thanks for watching
Hi Nick good to see you again.
Nick says hi and thanks for watching Charles!
Absolutely love your videos Dave! Thank you.
Fantastic to hear that my friend!
I’m going to try those two set ups got. Chance this past weekend to take my kids and grand kids camping and had a really great time I showed some fire making techniques
Fantastic to hear that Miguel! Let me know how they like it.
Brother Dave! I absolutely love both shelter ideas, excellent concept buddy. Thanks for sharing this video! Thumbs up video ~John
Thank you Brother John! Im glad you liked it. Thanks for watching
Thanks Dave and Nick! These setups are really Far Out! Can definitely see some bug netting and staying out for an extended camping trip. I’d like to send you some good Louisiana coffee. Got a P O box? Rock On Fellers!
You are very welcome Mark and we are glad you liked it! I do not have a P.O. box but I probably need one. Thanks for watching brother
I like them both but your right I would setup the last one that you did first. Enjoyed it Dave and Nick
Its definitely the faster easier set up. Im glad you liked it. Thanks for watching Chuck
great idea, especially if you have small children with you who are running around and would otherwise certainly trip over the lines
Very good point! And we are glad you liked it. Thanks for watching
Terry
Thanks Terry! I'm glad you liked it and the others! Thanks for watching brother
Hi Dave good one Dave from Melbourne Australia take care Dave
I'm glad you liked it JB
Thank you for yet another great idea! I'm still waiting for the day you'll run out of ideas. I might not ever see that day.
You are very welcome Mark and Im glad you liked it. I actually have a notebook filled with ideas! Thanks for watching
Good setups Dave , I like the no guy lines idea , thanks for sharing , God bless !
Thanks, Im glad you liked it. Thanks for watching and may god bless you too Michael!
Thanks Spencer, we are glad you liked it. For every way to set up a tarp there's always ten more ways! Lol. Thanks for watching brother
Great set ups! You always have the coolest videos!
Thank you! Im glad you liked it. Thanks for watching
Wow that's a beautiful set up thanks for the great idea 💡
Thanks Richard! I'm glad you liked it Brother
Great idea, Dave! Thanks for sharing! You are the best!

Hi Dave l like your videos Dave from Melbourne Australia
Thank you JB!
Really enjoyed this, excellent set up really well thought out
Thanks! I'm glad you liked it
Hello David!
Maybe it wasn't intentional, but I appreciate that you still have the first tarp set-up in view, while you are beginning the second set-up.
Carry on....Happy Trails....
Hello Steven! Nope, not intentional it happened to be where some handy trees were located. Thanks for watching
Dave, brother please start a line of YOUR creations. You have GREAT ideas and id love to purchase some of your cool modifications! 👍🏽
Thanks! That would be cool to do but I'd probably have to have a financial investor to ever make that happen.
Hey David and Nick,
That was almost a real roof!
When i saw all those sticks i thought what a lot of work! and you said it lol
Take care and enjoy life! (a wiseman said once)
Oh a lot of work but actual enjoyable! Not like ditch digging. Lol. I'm glad you liked it and thanks for watching my friend
@@Reallybigmonkey1 Always a pleasure my friend. :))
Talk about digging. It's not called back breaking work for nothing.. lol
Got to remember this one, in case i'm outta rope.. :))
