Flange Binding on your Quilt

  • Hello everyone! Today, we are going to show you how I bind and finishing the quilt using a flange binding!
    I was taught to make the flange binding out of 1.5 inch strips for binding part and 1.75 strips for the flange part or fake pipping.
    I now use 1.5 inch strips for the binding part and 2.0 inch strips for the flange part because I have 2.0 inch strips.
    Once the strips are sewn together, you iron the binding in half the long way, you sew the binding on to the back with the flange part up and the open side to the edge of the quilt.
    You can also manage your corners like other binding tutorial but I cheat and trim out the excess fabric in the corners to make my perfect milters on top!
    The hardest part is joining your binding ends together but I hope this makes sense.
    If you have another method of putting binding on to finish your quilts and it works well for you, do that method. A Finished quilt is better than another unfinished object (UFO).
    Remember to relax, put your feet up and breathe! Enjoy this process and be proud of what you are able to do.
    Most importantly, quilting is about having fun not feeling pressured!
    There is so many things to look at on a scrappy quilt that other people won't notice any little mistakes you make.
    Let us know, in the comments below if you want us to run a sew along for hand piecing or machine piecing for the end credits quilt or an alternative quilt.
    I hope this helps you conquer your Mount Scrapmore!

    I love flange bindings! They look like they should be so much more complicated to make than normal bindings, but they're actually easier because there's no hand sewing 🙂

      Hello Lea Louise! I'm so happy that you like this video. This is the fastest way to bind a quilt. I use this short cut method on all my quilts, Charity or Utility. I haven't done a show quilt for years now so I would suggest that a quilter would use the traditional method of turning a corner on a show quilt because the judges are picky here in Canada. I hope you have a creative and happy week ahead! Thanks for supporting our little channel.

      Hello Chaunda! You are most welcome and I'm glad that you liked this. There are a lot of different ways to join batting but this is the method I use and lots of different uses for the batting scraps. Originally, I was taught to hand sew those strips to get a totally flat batting surface, but I have now changed to sewing them on my straight stitch sewing machine. It is so cheap to sew together like this. I hope you have a joyful week ahead! Thank you for watching and supporting our little channel.

    Thank you for showing those corners! I learned years ago to make them and then it was a long period of time since i had made one like that and last time I tried i buggered it up bad. So i used a different technique. I do have one question...i seem to have difficulty get all 4 corners to look the same. Any suggestions?

    • @conqueringmountscrapmorewi2509
      @conqueringmountscrapmorewi2509  2 года назад +1

      Hi Dorothy! A friend showed me this technique years ago and I just love it and pretty much use this when I make a charity quilt. Those corners come with practice and patience so in the mean time, please don't be hard on yourself. I hope you have a wonderful week ahead. Thank you for watching and supporting our little channel.

    I love the idea of the flange but why is it that no body shows the other side of the sewing after they have finished the stitching

    • @conqueringmountscrapmorewi2509
      @conqueringmountscrapmorewi2509  2 года назад +1

      Hi Jenny! You are most welcome. I love this binding because I think of it as my last chance to add a pop of color to my quilt top in the flange. I'm sorry that I forgot to show you the other side of the quilt once it was finished but I'm still learning how to do all of this filming. You do see an extra sew line but if your thread in the bobbin matches your backing, it just blends into the backing. I hope you have a wonderful week ahead! Thank you for watching and your kind comments!
