  • Randy Blaukat has qualified for 8 Bassmaster Classics and 9 FLW Cups but he may have more people watching him today than he ever did at the height of his tournament career. Some take his word as gospel, others dismiss it as nothing more than gossip and click chasing. But Randy Blaukat and his polarizing opinions has found himself on the right side of relevancy more than a decade after his last national tournament victory. Some see him as a fearless crusader, trying to single-handedly ban forward-facing sonar - others say his thoughts are outdated and antiquated. But one thing is for sure. EVERYONE has an opinion about Randy Blaukat. This week he joins the podcast and we talk about or debate, just about EVERYTHING.

@MJ_Bass I'm not saying mapping and trolling motors aren't a big deal. they most definitely are, but they aren't the same as ffs. Ffs is like having a camera in the water were as mapping let's you see points, humps, etc where fisherman have learned(from actually fishing and putting in the time)bass like to be but it doesn't allow you to watch them, trolling motors help you get around to those places but again doesn't allow you to visual see the fish. • @GregDelR33

Randy raises so many great points about the fact that we don't want to know everything, the power of the unknowns in terms of mystery and excitement, and the effect FFS is having on fish populations without ever giving the fish a chance to rest, and he's not doing it for clicks or views. He's doing it because he genuinely loves the sport and wants to see it go in the best possible direction. I have all the respect in the world for that. And his being on a mission to see positive change in the sport is being mistaken for negativity by those who just want to put blinders on and keep mindlessly "progressing" the sport and morphing it into God knows what. That was one of the funniest stories about the guy who just wanted to kick Randy in the nuts too LOL. Randy seems like a very down-to-earth, straight forward, no bullshit, good guy, and a good teacher too. Really hope BASS considers these points. I truly believe FFS should be used experimentally and for research studies mostly. It can even be used in practice to gain intel into how the fish are responding to different baits and presentations, and to find fish before being taken away for the actual event to where you have to rely on your knowledge gained from practice and your instincts on the water while making adjustments on the fly in order to find and catch fish. That would be the absolute best middle ground for moving forward.

He's fishing the NPFL which has 6 events per season, rather than 9. Less grueling. 3rd reason was that NPFL fishes some in the fall and the Elites don't anymore

I think BASS is in a difficult situation as they get much of their income from Garmin and Lowrance and they are “their daddy”. FFS has made 95% of the skilled and groomed anglers irrelevant. It’s no longer talent it’s just using AI to do what we used to have to learn. This is the truth. Look at Hallman. He tried and couldn’t even stay on course with the gamers. Poker and AI is a bad mix guys…. Train wreck.

I agree with Randy. I think a lot of Sponsored anglers are afraid of giving their opinion about not liking or having to use FFS. I have literally heard several anglers say on RUclips that they only use FFS because they wouldn’t be able to compete without it. That they would rather fish and compete without it. It’s an obvious fact that it is helping especially young anglers to do well and even win. Nevertheless the public using it now and catching and keeping a lot of big 2-3lb crappie and taking pictures of them in the cooler or on the chopping block. So it shouldn’t be the fisherman’s decision weither or not they want to use it or not. Because people are selfish and want what can benefit them right now.

The long term health of our fisheries should be every anglers main concern. But all decisions should be made with science and real research not just opinions. The fishing decline could be a result of many factors namely the 10 million new anglers but all those questions will be addressed & answered with proper research. Just a thought. Thanks for watching

So do we ban sight fishing? His whole argument is based on the fact that we can see how a fish reacts to a presentation. I think we are learning so much thanks to this technology. Bass boats were 100k to fish at this level before forward facing sonar. Adding 5k to that set up is nothing, so the affordability isn't an argument. For us northerners you have to fish off shore for smallmouth. Good luck without this technology. We had 100lbs on the St. Lawrence. I'm sorry but that was cool to watch. Viewership is up because of guys like you Mercer. Yourself and Zona make a guy staring at a screen very exciting. If viewership was declining I could see an argument. I don't ever remember seeing this guy you are talking about fishing on the St.Johns River . But I'm sure he could come up with some kind of science to prove what I saw with my own eyes was not true . Every unknown PB was like winning the lotto. We always want a bigger fish. I do not have this feeling when I use FFS. I'm like you Dave concerning FFS. HOWEVER, if pros and orgs are actually concerned about conservation, they should restrict FFS to larger bodies of water with larger populations of fish. Many bodies of water have weekly tournaments. I can see fisheries having die off because of it. Also BASS OBVIOUSLY isn't concerned with weigh ins, which actually contradict conservation. I wish BASS would change to record and release.
Also, here's an analogy, FFS CAN BE a lot like giving a child a calculator and not teaching them how to computate math on paper or mentally. I do think there are plenty of anglers who's success depends on FFS.

I'm one of the people Randy blocked. Here's how I feel. I bought my Ranger Rt198p to enjoy fishing. I quit fishing tournaments years ago. I get to fish once a week with my father. I upgraded all my electronics and trolling motor. Yes this includes LiveScope. I've invested a lot of money for my enjoyment. Then Randy puts labels on people like myself. Randy calls us spot lighters. Then Randy says I'm going to get your enjoyment banned. I'm told I have no skills. I'm told your killing the fish. What gives Randy the right to stick his nose in my boat? I feel that people like myself are being belittled. Here's some facts. I won the 1997 Big Bass World Championship. I've caught 35 bass over 10lbs. I caught 30 of my 10lb bass before LiveScope even existed. Fact is LiveScope is not a crutch for myself. It's just a tool that aids in helping me find fish on my once a week fishing trip. The past 2 years of using LiveScope, has created memories with my dad. At this point in my life, creating memories is way more important than a trophy. When Randy says I'm going to get your LiveScope banned, I'm hearing your trying to take you and your father's enjoyment away. However I wasn't the one who told Randy I would fight him. I did challenge Randy to a fishing contest. I would be happy to not use my bow graph. Only 2d and down imaging. No GPS. And two marker bouys. May the best man win. The winner will receive an apology from the loser. Each boat has a marshall. Both boats video tape their catches. Catches are weighted by marshall and released. All the video footage will be edited for a RUclips show.

Great show again. I think times are changing and it sucks for us older guys. I agree that eventually the FFS is going to hurt the bass population and the other thing no one is talking about is the decimation of the crappie and bream populations. I’m 50 and I think that we have a whole generation that doesn’t understand the feeling of not knowing. This younger generation needs instant satisfaction which is sad but it is what it is. I wouldn’t say that all the Elite qualifiers wouldn’t make it but I do think that some wouldn’t. I wish that it could go back to pure skill and knowledge yes there is a skill to keeping the fish in the screen and casting distant but other than that there is no other skill than that. It is sad to hear guys say to not make a cast until you see a fish. Anyhow this is a never ending battle. The good thing about Randy is he isn’t scared to take a side and a opinion whether it is popular or not. There's two different issues involved with forward facing sonar; 1. the environmental impact on the fisheries and 2. how the game of bass tournaments are played. Neither BASS nor Randy Blaukat are qualified to determine the environmental impact, fisheries biologists will have to do surveys, and if needed, adjust bag limits. That's "their" job and fish populations have always been dynamic in some fisheries and so have regulations. What Blaukat is arguing seems akin to when my parents used to say "rock and roll isn't real music; jazz, big band, and classical are the only real music". They said that because that's the environment they grew up in. That's what Blaukat is doing with his FFS argument, imposing the environment he was involved with on today's environment. Blaukat mentioned the extreme respect he had for David Fritts' ability to use a flasher to find and catch fish. When flashers came out there were people just like Blaukat making the same arguments against flashers; "they're going to wipe out the fisheries", "they're bad for the sport", "now anyone can go out and catch as many fish as they want". All of that was proven wrong! People like Blaukat also dismiss the dedication it takes to learn how to use FFS effectively. Simply buying one, seeing movement, and catching a 30 pound bag of bass at will is just not reality.

But anyone that's a "pro angler" should be able to catch bass anywhere in the country anytime of the year consistently without any tech. If they can't catch them without it & be competitive, they shouldn't even be competing as a pro

I am curious & would like to know what pro anglers can't catch fish without it? If that's none of them than great! If there are a few guys that would absolutely suck without it. Then they shouldn't even be competing as & or called a pro. Which is why it would be interesting for half a season noone uses it. Single out guys that suck without it , soly rely on it to catch them & get rid of them! Then let the actual pro's compete & let them use whatever.

The only way he could compete is creating an uneven playing field. He had to get away from the field to create an advantage. The last 20 years has proved that. He was just a stunt fisherman. Sinking his boat to get where others couldn't. Loading gas cans in his boat so he could travel farther away from others. Now FFS levels the playing field and he can't compete, even on his home waters.

It should be fairly easy to raise the 50 grand, and the qualified promoter could make real money! Dave??

From a business stand point, I would think BASS prefer fans (their crowd) see the pro's use equipment that the average joe can use. When they see $120- $160K rigs, you have to ask the question, what is the message their sending. Would it not be better for all involved if the masses could go to their local store and buy the lure/set up that Jim bob just won the tournament on, IDK, food for thought. Great show! Our ability to debate issues controversial as they can be is what makes US the greatest community out there. Trust in the collective. Godspeed!

IMO, FFS has essentially replaced the skill, expertise, and experience that bass pros used to rely on in order to excel. What I would love to see is a sanctioned test competition by BASS, MLF, or both. Take the top 5 anglers who cut their teeth before FFS, and the lowest 5 who came in when FFS was big. Put them on one of the big name tournament lakes, and run two back to back events. One with FFS, one without. Have both broadcast on RUclips, and see which one gets the most positive response from viewers.

Have you ever used FFS ? There is a lot more involved than just seeing a fish. You still have to catch them.
Remove FFS from the equation. Every angler has been on the lake when a bunch of fish are surfacing. Just because you see them surface does not mean you catch them. Thanks for watching

    • @ristol6867
      @ristol6867 7 месяцев назад

@@factsoffishing Admittedly, I have not. Nor do I wish to. 98% of the time, I don't even turn on my 2D in lakes that I know well. I 100% agree with your statement that there is more to just seeing the fish. I will even go so far as to say that there IS a skill set involved in being productive with FFS. My point is that a truly skilled fisherman would know when to move on from those surfacing fish, and where to move to in order to find where fish are holding in any given condition, without having to actually see them on a screen. THAT is what PRO fishing used to be about. Skill. Knowledge. Experience. NOT video game ability. Also, for the record, I do not in anyway consider myself anywhere close to the pro level I speak of. I consider myself a good angler at best, and am rarely let down during my outings. As far as the Pro tourneys, I sadly and honestly don't see things reverting. As far as the non-tournament scene, FFS is being used in unscrupulous ways by those that are hurting our sport be it resources or enjoyment. That, at least I hope we can nip in the bud! ~Much respect, though we may disagree!
