Consumer Reports is not very good and a waste of money. It is mainly opinion just like most Amazon reviews and youtube reviews. They also do not provide any specific information about testing, or how they calculate and obtain reliability information they base their opinions on. Without knowing how and where the data comes from, all reliability data is suspect.
I've had cheap and expensive toasters, what I've learned is you have to adjust all of them to your own taste. I may not like what you like and vice versa
Totally agreed, and that's kind of why I liked the max setting that burnt the toast. Assuming that it's a smooth gradient from the lowest to the highest, they it would provide the largest controllable range of results. And perhaps more flexibility for different breads. Of course that's a heck of an assumption.
I appreciate the fact that he doesn’t waste the food… but I don’t think anyone would blame him for getting rid of that super burned toast 😂 take it to the park and feed the birds lol
It's actually pretty good if you eat them with some good meat. I know people who love to eat theses using them in a sauce with rabbit, boar or else strong meat :D
Your review for the Ninja Foodi airfry oven convinced me to buy it, and so far I freaking love it! Its toast mode on level 3 makes perfectly browned crispy toast.
The mainstays was 8 bucks at my local Walmart. You're right, it does run pretty hot, but once you get used to what settings you need it works fine for how cheap it was. I like that it's pretty slim and slots right in beside my knife block on my miniscule side counter.
@@punkem733 hey it's cheap and fits on his counter what's not to like :) and I would agree if your just going to use it for toast and waffles then it's fine once you get your number set. mine is 3 toasty on the outside and buttery on the in :)
I absolutely love your product testing. You did one with can openers. So, I went out and bought the kitchen aid! It’s works like a charm! I also need a new toaster! Thank you!
I bought a Cuisinart toaster 15 years ago with the same functions that appear on your newer model. I don't make a lot of toast/bagels/waffles, but I paid next to nothing for it, and it seems to serve its purpose whenever I do plug it in. Great videos. Thanks for posting them.
This is one of your best videos. I liked how well you explained all the steps with more detail in fewer words. Also GOOD CALL for accounting for the toasters being calibrated for two slices at a time.
Thanks for the review. I'll be buying a Mainstays toaster for my aunt who loves burnt toast. This will be the 3rd gift I've given inspired by your reviews.
With any toaster, I pay no attention to the number on the dial. I adjust the dial to achieve the level of toastiness I desire. Once that is achieved, I would compare the toasters for evenness of toasting and the time necessary to achieve the desired result. On a side note, I have never known anyone who used the maximum setting. Have a great weekend, James!
My father liked his charcoal to have some toast in it. Would burn black pop tarts. Do you know how bad burned sugar smells? I do. Middle of winter with windows open and the range hood fan on to get the smell and the smoke out of the kitchen.
Nicely done review. We just purchased a Hamilton Beach toaster at Target as a Black Friday deal. It was $10, but I think it was a different maybe more basic model. We tested it using one slice of Wonder bread and it consistently burned the center side even on the lowest setting. Other customers reported similar experiences with the toaster. We returned it. Now I’m wondering if the Hamilton Beach model used in your review would work properly for us. Can’t believe how hard it is to find a cheap toaster that works.
I bought the Mainstays on a whim and once you figure out the level of brown each dot correlates too (2.5 is my sweet spot) it's pretty good. I have a legit toaster oven for bagels and pizzas and such so the $10 is super worth it for me cause I just use it for regular bread quite often. Great video!
I have a Mainstays toaster (not the model in the video, mine has 4 slots) that cost $15-20 where I live. On mine specifically I've noticed that the "outside" heating elements get hotter than the "inside" ones, so for bagels and English muffins I just place them cut side facing out. With toast this means that one side gets just a _little_ bit darker than the other, and I personally like that. The darker side holds up to toppings (peanut butter, jam, avocado, etc.) but there's still a little bit of chew to it.
Love this review!! I have always been a big fan of Hamilton Beach appliances, and this review does NOT disappoint! GO HB!!!lol ( although, at the moment, I do own a Cuisinart...and it works great as well....so I guess I totally agree with you James!)
Boy, I wish this had been up last week! My 15 year old Betty Crocker white plastic toaster died on the inside - only the outer elements were working. But she gave me her all, so I have no complaints. I ordered the Black & Decker from Amazon. It works as you showed, with results that are not too uneven. I set it on about 2 1/2 and it does my wheat bread or bagel in one go. I like that it is not metal on the sides, so it won't get hot to the touch. Thank you for the thorough review! And BTW, if you've never made bread pudding, now is your chance!
I love that you went for budget items compared to budget items. Don't get me wrong, seeing how they stack up vs high end items is fun to watch but the comparison is much more useful to me this way. I'd love to see a budget Dash Cam video. The first one was great but they were all so pricey. I actually just noticed you did a second one, I'm gonna go give it a watch right now!
I have only ever had Hamilton Beach toasters! I’ve had the simpler ones like you had and a while ago I got gifted a bigger and nicer one. I have never had any issues with them, and they are really hardy for what you pay. It’s a pretty solid brand as far as cheaper kitchenware goes
I bought an expensive toaster a couple years ago and it sucked. I returned it and got a Hamilton Beach cool touch toaster for $13.99, and it's been amazing, so I was rooting for HB here, and glad to see it's your choice. It's no frills, but it makes consistent and even toast, and it's pretty quick too. I wish the crumb tray was a little better,.but that's how I feel about every toaster. For eggo waffles, I actually go to the highest setting, and that works for me. Thanks for doing this comparison!
Last year I bought a toaster where the area that the toast rests pulls out. This was because my homemade bread was difficult to remove in a single piece from the standard pop-up toaster because the bread is so delicate. The pull out design allows for easy loading of the bread, and unloading of the toast. You might want to check them out. I got this on Amazon.
This has been the only worthwhile toaster review I have ever seen. Thank you for your hard work. I would still have tested both toasters using frozen waffles without the frozen button, just to see the difference.
the bagel button usually turns off a single side of each burner to allow the inner bread to toast without burning the outer crusty portion of your bagels and/or English muffins, doesn't it?
I regularly buy a pretty heavy and moist 12 grain bread and have found you need a higher setting on heavier breads than you do on plain, poofy white bread. I toast my 12 grain on a 7 on my toaster. It comes out golden brown. Also, the defrost button is actually for defrosting frozen bread. You would expect to have to toast it after defrosting. It does work well for frozen waffles as you discovered. You can defrost the waffle and then toast to your desired doneness. Great review!
I bought the Hamilton Beach, a few weeks ago, and it's great. It's a real step-up, from the Mainstay toaster it replaced. Like most Mainstay items, it was junk.
I'm looking for a toaster so watched it. This subscriber really appreciates your commitment to not wasting food, even cheap white bread. I liked hearing that you're gonna put that Eggo back in the freezer until you want to eat it. Best wishes from the Houston/Galveston area.
At Walmart I picked up an inexpensive four slice sunbeam with six toast levels and two light up bagel buttons. It will do anywhere from the really light that you had to the really black that you had. And it will do that on bread, bagels, and waffles. What I like is that I find it very easy to set for the different levels I like between medium and slightly darker on everything I’ve put in it. Your reviews are the best I’ve seen. Keep up the excellent work. 😃
haha what a coincidence i recently bought a toaster too! and for what is basically the uk version of a $10 toaster it's a really good toaster, deep enough, and looks great.
I use my toaster for all kinds of things like hash brown patties, chicken patties, homemade tortilla pizza pockets, burritos.. It's much faster and cheaper than an oven which i can't afford anyways
James, thanks for doing what you do. Since you loved the Hamilton Beach toaster, have you considered doing side by side comparison of the different levels within Hamilton Beach, like including this basic model, and then their wide slot, the ones with frozen and bagel settings, etc.?
I've got the Black & Decker toaster and we make bagels semi-regularly. It seems like on our one at least, the cut sides have to face the outside. While there is no external indication that the bagel option is functioning, looking inside, it seems like the outer heating elements are red whereas the inner ones are not as much. But then your bagels toasted on the correct sides when you had them facing inwards, so maybe our one was assembled backwards 😁
I have that exact Cuisinart model. Have had it for years. Works well, and I have never had any problems with it. Middle number setting isn’t exactly medium on it. It depends on what you put in there. What setting you need depends on the type of bread, bagel, or English muffin you stick in there. I seem to cook most item around setting 3 or 3.5.
We've had 2 of the Cuisinarts, both of which went bad within a year and a half. By then, the lever became extremely hard to push down, and was difficult to raise it to remove the toast. Also, they gradually started to toast one end, more than the other. The normal price at Amazon is around $32. This model has gotten excellent reviews from several testing organizations, but apparently, it needs replacing yearly.
Hi James, Here in the UK we have crumpets. I tend to keep them in the freezer, and like them well done, so that is when I use the highest number on my toaster.
I have bagel and frozen , reheat on my toaster use it all the time. I have 4 place toaster and 2 place toaster. I use frozen a lot . I love it. Reheat works great too.
I just bought the Cusinart ... after returning 2 different brands. One was an Amazon brand which was suspiciously like the Mainstay. Wish I’d seen your video first. Overall happy with the Cusinart even tho we don’t make many bagels or waffles.
This is the first video in a month of having Covid-19 that I could actually concentrate on and enjoy. Now I'm interested in toasters! I can't taste or smell consistently yet but when I do, I'll be making some toast. LOL.
Great review, I am looking to buy a new toaster, this review is a great help in deciding which one to buy. I likes the cuistoaster. Can you do a review on the long slot toasters as well? Thanks, Karen
Something important to note with heat settings: Depending on the type of bread you're using, you may need a hotter or cooler setting achieve the same level of brownness as a piece of toasted white bread. This depends on a lot of factors like sugar and fat content, but it also depends on moisture. If you toast a slice of whole wheat bread, for instance, you need a higher setting because it's a moister bread than white bread. This is important because for certain types of bread the hottest setting might not end up being burnt, somewhat justifying the really hot upper limit. Also I have the Cuisinart, and it's a perfectly lovely toaster. It does exactly what I need it to do and it does it fairly well. No complaints, and I've had it for a few years.
I have the Cuisinart. Works great. I always have Temps high for waffle. I use Vans waffles and they are hearty so in I ignore the low settings directions. Still is a 2x process. I like the plastic as it stays cooler and easy to clean. Chrome is a killer.
Shoutout to burnt toast fans! I love moderately burnt toast with butter and peanut butter - the charred taste is amazing and provides a really nice complimentary flavour to the sweet salty creamy peanut.

I have the Cuisinart. Works great. I always have Temps high for waffle. I use Vans waffles and they are hearty so in I ignore the low settings directions. Still is a 2x process. I like the plastic as it stays cooler and easy to clean. Chrome is a killer.
Gotta love the ol squeeze and fart......I mean Cuisinart lmfao🤣🤣 Great review as always keep up the amazing content.
I see you James. Panning the video down when you depress the lever, and panning it up when the toast pops up. Nice little detail. 👌
I have the Black & Decker toaster I set the dial straight up and hit Bagel and they come out the way I like them.
Shoutout to burnt toast fans! I love moderately burnt toast with butter and peanut butter - the charred taste is amazing and provides a really nice complimentary flavour to the sweet salty creamy peanut.
Perfect timing as I am going to buy a toaster soon.
Instead of a toaster, can I suggest you get a corvette instead? My husband did and we don't regret the decision. So fun!

Thanks for another great video. Hope you didn't think you were having a stroke while you were filming.... ATB : )
Hamilton Beach on max seems like a good setting (atleast for me)
