For 3x the price, the features on the breville can just be done popping by hand on the bydeem. But the bydeem has the reheat function as well... It's hard to justify 3x the price just for the slow lowering and rising, which will probably also be more prone to breakage.

@januaryoctober8618 at least with a car you just plug it into a computer and it tells you what's wrong. Like your car still functions even without a working back up camera. Even the toasters he tested today in this video. I would go with the cheaper one simply because it doesn't have the auto lift/lower. As soon as s that auto lower feature breaks the toaster is done for
I currently have the breville 4 slice toaster except it's lengthwise rather than all four slices along. So it's a longer slimmer toaster which I like. I've had it for 7 years and I have never had a problem. One thing I liked about the breville is it feels substantial. It doesn't feel cheap, and also I don't know if you noticed but on the breville you can actually watch the light counting down as the toast is being toasted and I really like that feature. I will add. As a side note, I really like to when you did the test on the toaster with the little screen on it that It was all touch tone like your phone, but I guess that's the one that only lasted a year and a half so I'll stick with the breville
I rarely eat toast or the various items you would cook in a toaster, so I've always done the cheap toaster. However I've always had issue with it taking up counter space. I recently have switched to one of those Ninja flip up toaster ovens as it kinda stays out of the way, and i can cook a lot of other items in it, and I've been pretty happy with that.
One thing I'd like to see on any future toaster tests is trying at least a couple different types of bread. Some of those toasters that burn a light white bread might might be perfect for one of those more dense fresh loaves from a bakery, especially if the dense loaf is cut a little thicker. And on the other hand, some toasters might burn a relatively light white bread even on the low setting. You might be able to test both at the same time even with 2 slot toasters, one type in each slot so the tests wouldn't necessarily take much longer.
That's going to be the same thing for every single toaster, if it's the bread that's the difference. No sense to review a toaster with different types of bread... if you know it takes less time then other bread, simply put lower level.
I was honestly surprised you're keeping the more expensive one. The auto lifting feature is just one more thing to break and the cheaper one did an almost better job at even toasting.
Go on the bay and find a nice (maybe new old stock) Toastmaster toaster. It will probably last a lifetime. Unfortunately Toastmaster no longer makes consumer models, but when they did, they were awesome.
My grandfather was a woodworker. He made toaster tongs from a piece of 1" dowel and 2 tongue depressors. Worked great until we decided to eat low carb. No toaster so the tongs sit in a drawer
Thank you for this video. What great timing. I just got my husband (our household - he uses it more than I do) the Buydeem for Christmas because it had such great reviews. We haven't opened it or used it yet but I'm confident that I chose a good one now. Yes, the reheat feature got me. I ordered the yellow one. :)
We have had the Breville model for 6 months now and we love it. The led on the toast level slider is also a countdown timer, and flash's constantly to let you know how much time is remaining. The crumb tray is easy to access on the bottom with a simple pull out tray, and the beep at the end of the toast is great because you can go do something else and will know when to come back for a hot piece of toast. And yes the auto lower and raise is a nice feature. It toasts bagels to perfection along with toast. We hope it lasts a long time and if our other Breville appliance's are any indication it most certainly will.
Wow! Name and shame - what $350 toaster died after 18 months??? I have $15 toaster that I bought 15 years ago that STILL makes perfect toast. It's only 2 slots but that's all we need.
We have the Breville Long Slot toaster. It has two long slots, which each accommodate either two standard slices, or one long bread slice. The long slots are nice for round loaves, more country style breads. We've had ours for over 10 years now, still working great. One thing that I think can cause some people to throw out a toaster, is when they start tripping GFCI outlets. I have had to blow out the toaster several times, making sure to get out nearly all crumbs. They were likely causing a small leakage current to ground, tripping the GFCI feature in the outlet/breaker.
I have been hunting for a good toaster for my entire adult life, and finally found it a few months ago - the Ninja Foodi Air Fryer Oven. It's the most reliable and consistent toaster I have ever used, and it makes evenly, beautifully toasted toast. It's fantastic, and I don't ever want to go back to inferior traditional toasters.
James, the bamboo tongs are so you don't electrocute yourself when a smaller or broken piece of toast gets stuck inside. People have been known to dig those out with a metal fork. Zap! You don't need the tongs for normal slices. Keep the tongs, Bud.
It's been ages sense there was live wires in the toaster area. Power ends at the switch. The old Sunbeam radiant toaster could zap you if you stuck a fork in them. But even they fixed that.
I have the 2 slot Breville toaster and love it. I've had it for about 3 years now so it's made really well. You can also use the bagel function to toast hamburger buns. For english muffins I like a setting of 4 and they come out golden brown. The setting you use also depends on the moisture level of the bread.
I purchased my Oster Toaster at our local Kmart store when it was going out of business about 18 years ago. It was discounted down to $8. I think the original price was $30. It has 2 slots and continues to work just fine. Besides toasting bread, it toasts bagels and has a reheat button, plus a cancel button. It also lifts the toast up, so it's easier to get out. All those features in an $8 toaster that is still doing its job after 18 years!!! Those super expensive toasters will not last as long!
I’ve also tried slightly more expensive toasters, the cheap ones work better and last so much longer! I do have a Breville oven that is fantastic, but I’m not remotely interested in their toaster - looked at it a few years ago but the price out me off!
I have the Brevelle 4 slice long slot toaster version of this one and I love it. I finally settled on it after trying 5 others after watching your reviews.
On the one hand, that Breville motorized toaster that automatically lowers and raises the toast may seem frivolous. But on the other hand, toasters often get abused by slamming the bread down over the years. Whereas the motorized toaster forces you to be patient with feeding the bread. But then, if the motor fails, is there a manual override?
Dualit toasters are overpriced but then so is one of those in the video, and especially the one from his previous video with the screen that costs the same as a Dualit that will last a lifetime, or two.
Great review. I recently bought a Breville coffee maker, espresso machine and coffee grinder. All three are great machines so I’m sure the Breville toaster will be good as well.
I have the Breville toaster, my mum brought it when my sister was 2-3 and she just turned 18 last month. This toaster has been used every day and still going. Mum gave it to me because as us kids moved out it was just her so she didn’t need the 4 slice function but it has been great for breakfast with my own kids. I never would have spent so much on a toaster but I have to admit it is pritty good
I eat toast several times a day. I saw a video awhile back testing brands of toasters, "Cooks Country" or something like that, and bought their best pick. It had a rod for a toasting element and a glass window to watch the toasting. $35, Amazon. Two long slots for 4 regular or 2 wide fancy slices. Best toaster I've ever had. I also like my horizontal broiler toaster to melt the butter as it toasts. I enjoy your channel. I live in Vegas, too, though I'm not there now, visiting relatives for the holidays in Washington state.
I have the same Breville, it is a good toaster been happy with it and is still going strong after a number of years, if you want to reheat your toast you can press the bit more button and it reheats it. Also, it has two slide draws at the bottom you can pull out too clean crumbs.
the pricey toaster is for people with loads of disposable income and they can afford to buy a new one every year or so........i remember when you got that other fancy one as i was in the market for a new toaster.......they were out of the 9.99 model so i got the stainless steel 19.99 one and it still works perfectly
I think the tongs are more useful for when you're toasting something smaller. Like English muffins and some breads are smaller and stay below the surface when they are popped up, so you have to reach in to pull them out. It's risky trying not to touch the hot sides like that. So I usually use something to get them out, but obviously you don't want to use metal or plastic to reach into a toaster (one can shock, the other can melt). Never heard of these wood toaster tongs before though. I'll have to look them up. we have a long 4-slice toaster, which fits those wide flatter sourdough slices, and those often don't stick out of the top when they're done.
If I have leftover toast I wrap it tightly with plastic wrap, put it in a zip lock baggie and store it in the freezer. Later on I can warm it up or use it for croutons.
I didn't know about Buydeem brand before but I thought it looks great. My partner bought the Breville just because my partner is trying to make our kitchen looks cohesive with all breville appliances. I can say, I like the toaster but I myself won't pay as much just for a toaster that works just like other toaster. I have no complain about it though, easy to clean the crumb as well.
One test i would like to see is the “skip around”. Where you toast beck to back at different levels. Like someone comes in and wants dark toast, then the next person wants light, without cooling the toaster in between. This is probably more of a two slot issue, but it could be an issue when cooking for a crowd.
I probably wouldn't go for anything more advanced than the Buydeem. My parents bought a $120 toaster a few years back and it crapped out on them within 3 years. My $20 toaster is still holding strong after year 8. Worst part about their toaster was the extremely loud beep that played when it finished toasting. There was no way to lower the volume or turn the beep off. My parents room was next to the kitchen so it would occasionally wake up my parents when I woke up before them lol hopefully the Breville has volume controls
I just bought my wife a breville espresso machine and thought the same about the plug so I looked it up and apparently breville patented it. So it will be a while before we see it more widely adopted.
I love toasters but the one thing I love about toast you cant do with them..add butter before you toast it so it soaks in. I use a toaster oven to make toast. Used to use the big over when I was young before toaster ovens were cool.
To save space, I've used a Breville toaster oven that cost around $125 for almost 10 yrs. Works great for toast and any size bread, buns, bagels. I really don't see any advantage to having a separate toaster.
i bought mine around the same time was $200 but maybe a larger size. It works great toasting but have gotten the error message recently to where it wont work. Have to unplug and replug over and over again pressing buttons and trying different things to get it to work again. Seems fine right now but knocking on wood 😂
I haven't owned a toaster in 20 years, I use my toaster oven and sometimes even put frozen waffles in the air fryer to heat up. Can't believe that $350 high tech toaster only lasted 1.5 years, but no one needs a $350 high tech toaster in the first place.
Still don't think either of these could convince me to upgrade from my $20 toaster i think i bought at marshalls years ago. Love the video but I have yet to want anything other than a basic toaster 😆
I have a pair of much thinners toast to gs that my mom bought from a catalog. Love them, especially with my cheap toaster that I can't get English muffins out of or smaller types of bread. Absolutely love them. But they don't have the large bunny head, more like chop sticks stuck together.
I'm insanely picky when it comes to my toast. The best toaster I ever used belonged to my workplace when I worked for one of those survey places that were at the mall back in the day. They had a Sunbeam toaster that had small slots so you would not be able to put a bagel in it but you could put an English muffin or a Pop-Tart or a piece of bread. The bread came out perfect every time. It was the most amazing toaster. As I had to replace a toaster the last time about 10 years ago I bought a Brevel two slot and it had been discontinued because it got so hot that people complained. It toasts amazingly and I even bought another for our condo in Florida. The tongs that you were using I don't use them personally but my parents have a pair that they use consistently because things are too hot for them to touch. I think people that cook their fingers get more used to the heat and so it doesn't bother us as much.
I had the money for the breville, so i bought it. The first one i had lasted 6 years with zero hicups, and it only died because i dropped it off the counter when cleaning. Ordered my second one today, thats how i ended up here haha
Funny the Breville trying to be all high-tech without levers to push the toast down, yet the darkness setting is.. levers. Guess the factory ran out of buttons.
I own the Breville toaster and have had it for years. Mines a little different it does not have a bagel button but a crumpet/fruit toast button and it makes the best crumpets ever 🤤
I wonder if you make 2 at level 2 and the other 2 at max , etc if they stay consistent or only when all 4 slices are same setting? Breville looks better and doesn’t sound cheap when you press it down, good puck, great review! Happy New Year!❤
I have 2 brevil, i gave the first to my sister got a second one cause I wanted the large one, the first one after 10 years still goes strong, the second one after 2 years no issue, sooo cool and smooth to use...
For the price of the Breville you could buy a solid toaster oven that does everything it does and more. My family owns a Wolf toaster oven after our cheap >100 dollar one started to go. (Heating rod failed.). That cheap one made it over 10 years and I could make perfect golden toast and it beats the Wolf on quesadillas.
I wonder if you used the "a little more" feature on the Breville, if it'd work similarly to the reheat function of the other toaster. I guess it might brown a bit, but that's not a big deal.
Some years ago I needed a new toaster. My old was a electromechanical nightmare. Not advanced and yet very imprecise and uncertain. So I went to the stores and looked. There were a lot of crap or extremely expensive toasters, and then I found a store selling off a model of more advanced toaster from Philips. It had IR sensors that checked the toast level of the bread and a electronic control board. It had a lot of features for reheating, bagels, buns and so on, and it was sold for what was basically $30. So i got one. I've had one issue with this toaster. Once i managed to power it up in something looking like a diagnostic procedure. All LED's were lit in patterns, the toaster elements were run in some kind of pattern and it sounded funny. But that was just once in several years. Powering it off an on again seemed to have everything back to normal. Didn't really think much about it until three years later when I walked by a store that had that exact model of toaster posted with a lot of information of how revolutionary it was this "new" model that had all kinds of advanced features, and it was priced at only $130... I did check and it was the same product number, so exactly the same model of toaster, just sold at more than four times the price...
I just purchased a toaster from Amazon by a company named WestBend called quik serve toaster ... It's a very interesting toaster you load it from the top like a regular toaster but when it's ready it shoots what's being toasted out from the bottom of the toaster onto a built in tray... It also has bagel and gluten free buttons as options... I think it'll be a interesting review for you to do.
I like using my ovens broil setting, if you haven't tried it, you toast the one side quick, the other stays non toasted, you put your butter on the toasted side and fold like a sandwich. Less crumbs as well
I've never owned a toaster, grew up with my granny and always just butter my bread and throw it in the oven, works every time and doesn't cost me anything 😂
A lot more heat and energy used for just a slice or two of bread. The energy saved by a toaster, compared to an oven, could pay for itself. At least one that costs around $30. $210 seems kind of ridiculous to me.
I have that Buydeem toaster. Mine doesn't toast well. Only the center of the bread toasts. The bagel, defrost and reheat settings do nothing. I really miss the bagel setting.
I have a sage toaster, it looks similar to the breville toaster, I'm not sure if there is a difference between the sage and breville toasters, but maybe you could do a comparison between the two someday to see if they are different?
I have a $10 toaster with bagel and two slots. It had a dial, it does VERY good. I'll run that one for another 5-10 years I'll guess... The Buydeem does look pretty cool though, thanks James!
The only issue I e had with a toaster here in the UK was a cheap one so shallow only about 2/3rds of the bread actually went in. Replaced that with a 4 slice Delonghi that was on special and it's been great for about 6 years now.
Unpopular opinion: As someone who only makes toasted products maybe once a month - I got rid of my toaster. It wasn’t worth the cabinet space for me. I just use my oven on broil if I need to toast something. I know I use the electric if I go through a stretch where I make toast, but for the rare occasion this happens I feel it works for me.
Not sure if you mentioned it and I missed it, but it seems on the Breville when you select lets say 5 for brownness, it appears the LED counts down/goes to the left as it toasts, almost like its giving you a count down. Interesting.
That toaster only lasted a year and a half? I've had $20 toasters that lasted 10 years or more lol
Yep... my $20 toaster is still working fine, nearly 20 years later. No bells, no whistles, no hassles.

Right. Sour dough toast takes a long time - too much moisture.
Auto lowering has been around for a very long time. As in the early 50s. Just a thermal spring that rises and lowers them
Go on the bay and find a nice (maybe new old stock) Toastmaster toaster. It will probably last a lifetime. Unfortunately Toastmaster no longer makes consumer models, but when they did, they were awesome.
We want Old Toaster Autopsy!!! We want to know why it failed!
Those tongs would be great for handling Pop Tarts, those things are wicked when hot! Oh great video as always James 👍
My grandfather was a woodworker. He made toaster tongs from a piece of 1" dowel and 2 tongue depressors. Worked great until we decided to eat low carb. No toaster so the tongs sit in a drawer
English muffins, too, because they're short and so hot and hard to get out.
I’ve had the two slot version of the Breville for about 4 years now and am very pleased with the toasters performance and totally problem free.
My 10dollar toaster from the 90s still going strong.
These expensive toasters have way to many features and wont even last 5 years..
That's because it was made in the 90s.. Don't ever get rid of that toaster!
@@Mandy_39 yes that quality 90s chinesium toaster.
mo features mo problems 😂
Thank you for testing upper-end products.
13:39 I started laughing hysterically when the toast popped up into the camera; the cut was perfect!
Wow! Name and shame - what $350 toaster died after 18 months??? I have $15 toaster that I bought 15 years ago that STILL makes perfect toast. It's only 2 slots but that's all we need.
I have a 20 dollar Oster that does amazingly well for a 20 dollar toaster.
It has the re-heat and a bagel setting.
It's only a two slicer though.
I rarely shop at Wal-Mart but for a toaster, it's about $23. Perfectly fine.
I just want a piece of toast, I don't want to launch the Space Shuttle.
Keep the tongs, Bud.
thank you lol he was pissing me off with those tongs! 😂
unplug it, flip upside down.
I just unplug it and then go in for the stuck toast.
It's been ages sense there was live wires in the toaster area. Power ends at the switch. The old Sunbeam radiant toaster could zap you if you stuck a fork in them. But even they fixed that.
@@meegstomtom i was thinking this too, but I didn't want to tell ppl to try sticking metal inside.
Dash Toaster with the long slot and window is my jam.
I'll stick with the old fashion toaster without the fancy that nobody going to use crap.
I bought the Buydeem 2 slot and so far I'm loving it!! Thanks for another great reivew.
Have you ever tried a dualit toaster? They have parts that you can replace yourself when they break and they are very high-quality, made in England.
Dualit toasters are overpriced but then so is one of those in the video, and especially the one from his previous video with the screen that costs the same as a Dualit that will last a lifetime, or two.
Toasters without automatic popup are useless.
Love my dualit. Got is second hand and it is my best toaster I've had. Super simple. With a switch for one slice or 2 and a timer.
@@svn5994they have a lever on them and it works awesome for checking toast or what ever. Nothing to fail ether.
Would love to see the reactions on various chopsticks from wood to bamboo to fiberglass to ones that split in half for traveling
What happened to that last fancy toaster? What caused it to break? That would be valuable to share given how expensive it was
Didn't that toaster have a display screen?
That's what I'm wondering! James, if you see this, please do an update video on the old toaster.
James already did an update on it, he said that the toaster suddenly stopped working properly and even turning on anymore.
@@IamIanOficial When was that? I must have missed it. I vaguely remember the year update, and it was working then.
@@scaper8 fairly confident it was in his yearly "1 year later" video he put out recently
350 dollars. This thing had better be the everlasting Gobstopper of toasters. Endless free toast forever.
For that money I’m buying a vintage Sunbeam Radiant Control that’ll last another 50+ years over the disposable tat for sale today.
We have the Buydeem and it's pretty solid. Very even toasting on bread and bagels.
The buydeem (the blue one) is so much better and a great price, in my opinion. Such a well designed toaster
the pricey toaster is for people with loads of disposable income and they can afford to buy a new one every year or so........i remember when you got that other fancy one as i was in the market for a new toaster.......they were out of the 9.99 model so i got the stainless steel 19.99 one and it still works perfectly
How does Darth Vader like his toast?
On the Dark Side 😂
I have that exact same buydeem toaster! I’ve had it for about 6 months now and I love it.
I've never had a standard toaster. My family, and now I, have always had toaster ovens. My next one will be a toaster oven/air fryer-convection oven.
Air Fryers tend to dry out pre-processed bread quickly.
Air Fryers are just gimmicky names for convection ovens.
I dig the sort of retro look of thr cheaper one.
> To save space
> Buys a significantly larger appliance.
You should review cheap pizza ovens, especially the Granitestone Piezano that just came out!
I wonder if you make 2 at level 2 and the other 2 at max , etc if they stay consistent or only when all 4 slices are same setting? Breville looks better and doesn’t sound cheap when you press it down, good puck, great review! Happy New Year!❤
That line "looks like ill be having waffles for lunch with a side of toast" made me laugh. Idk youre a natural with those moments in these videos.
I have the breville and I love it...I've had it about 2 years...still doing great job.
Have the same breville for 10 years work like a charm 😁
I have a toaster my mom bought for me at a yard sale for $5 at least 15 years ago. It's still working.
350 dollars for a toaster is straight up highway robbery
Well when you add what is basically just a tablet computer on the side of it to control the toaster it's going to cost a lot.
Makes me think of the "Brave Little Toaster" movie.
I got mine at Walgreens. It’s only a two slicer but it’s still working after three years. Oh yeah, I paid twenty bucks for it.
Have bought the Breville one in 2014 and still using it
I have a $10 toaster with bagel and two slots.
3:45 that's perfect
Unpopular opinion: As someone who only makes toasted products maybe once a month - I got rid of my toaster. It wasn’t worth the cabinet space for me. I just use my oven on broil if I need to toast something. I know I use the electric if I go through a stretch where I make toast, but for the rare occasion this happens I feel it works for me.
Not sure if you mentioned it and I missed it, but it seems on the Breville when you select lets say 5 for brownness, it appears the LED counts down/goes to the left as it toasts, almost like its giving you a count down. Interesting.
Simple is best. If you're someone who never cleans it out, you can just replace it for cheap when it dies.
The settings for toasting levels; are they just a timer?
We use a toaster oven/convection over/air fryer combo that does everything we need it to. I cannot remember the last time I owned an actual toaster.
