I had a large black speck on my display a few months ago.
Concerned, I tried wiping it off with my finger. It was under the plastic, so I could not touch it.
    Suddenly, it started moving.
It was an ant crawling around inside of my monitor, somewhere between the front plastic and the backlight.
There was a live ant searching for food inside my LCD monitor fourteen floors above the ground.
    Life always finds a way...

I fucking hate ants swear to GOD. If I could round them up in a basin and torture them in the most inhumane way I would. I hate those motherfuckers more tthan any insect, including giant spiders and they are on the level of the ganglionis tentacle moth. This summer, they started crawling in and out of my 1 year old HP Probook (expensive sixcore laptop) and are likely causing wonky malfunctions. Before this summer when those fuckers weren't around, my laptop never had any issues, let alone funky ones. Last summer we didn't get fucking ants and my laptop never fucked up. They also bite, fucking gross. Most likely caused by a neighbor.

I bought an BenQ XL2411 and within the first 3 months of use I had a stuck pixel dead center in my screen. I tried all those little fixes to no avail. Amazon thankfully had a really nice return with me, they let me keep the broken one until they shipped out the new one. I will definitely be ordering monitors from Amazon more often. That was 3-4 years ago, so far so good, knock on wood.

I actually have this really weird phenomenon where one single pixel sort of in the center-left part of my screen will just be completely red, but not all the time. It's not "stuck" because it will only very occasionally turn and stay red for a random period of time, and only when the screen area around it is relatively dark. When I first got the monitor I was disappointed that there was a red pixel basically right in the middle of it, but now I only really see it once every now and then.

I got a stuck/dead pixel. (Don't know which pixel type I have) But it's so small, you have to really glance at it closely, but other than that. I can understand why Alienware, ASUS, Dell, Lenovo, ViewSonic, Vizio, etc. Don't need to take back the monitor/laptop screen. But if it's a gaming monitor/laptop with a lot of dead/stuck pixels, you're entitled to a replacement or refund. But if it's only just one tiny little pixel, then it's not worth trying to spend a couple hundred dollars again just to get a perfect monitor/laptop screen with zero imperfections and possibly getting another monitor/laptop screen and may still have dead/stuck pixels anyway. Technology isn't perfect, sadly. One little dead/stuck pixel on your gaming monitor/laptop screen doesn't really affect performance, just an annoyance.

Your comment is my exact situation. Got a sweet Acer Predator with one stuck pixel. And I've been obsessed over it. Warranty obviously doesn't cover just one and I can return it. But just as you say... Would I return another one if the next one has 2 or another problem? Sometimes you just gonna accept that not everything you buy will be perfect.

I bought a 4K display off amazon, one tiny dead pixel was enough for me to send it back. It bothered me a lot, especially considering it was new and pretty expensive. Greg, If I were you I'd probably get a replacement model, like you said it's on the side of the screen but if you're buying new, you should receive a flawless product, especially with something like an XPS 15.

There is an iso standard for the amount of dead pixels. its defined in EN ISO 9241-307. It has 5 pixel fault classes from 0-IV, which correspond to the amount of dead pixels per megapixel. It replaced an older standard. The old standard allowed 0 errors at pixel fault class I, the new one allows one dead and one hot per megapixel.
But most standard displays are spec'd for class II, so thats 4 whole pixels broken(two "hot" and two dead) per megapixel at most.
It depends what spec they give for the display. Some premium displays even get spec'd with class 0, which is zero faults. But usually they are class I or II so they don't have to take any back just because one pixel dies.
edit: messed up some numbers, corrected.

god i miss that being an expat in the USA. we returned all our monitors at the company i worked at because Dell also cross shipped so there was little downtime for employees. Back here in Straya, i swear we live in the dumping ground of the world where they repackage as new and resell all RMA units from the USA and EU... as the chances of getting a remotely desirable monitor without bad pixels or uniformity issues is flipping ZERO!

    Vizio, M-series:
Had at least 6 different dead pixels. contacted them, even elevated the situation to a higher rank, and they declared I could not receive a replacement unless there were over 18 individual deal pixels or 6 clusters. Also, they refused to call them dead pixels. They were referred to as "Bright Pixels", despite the fact they were dead.

I've been able to gently massage out many dead pixels over the last 20 years. works a decent percentage of the time on LCD panels, I will say that odds are you have to do it a few times, most of the time the dead/stuck pixel came back once or twice and I had to repeat. But any screen that I was able to massage the pixel back to life, it eventually never came back.

My Dell XPS 13 9365 (I7-7Y75, 8 GB ram, 256 GB M.2 SSD, Windows 10 Home)had a black pixel in the middle of the screen. After proving it to Dell Support, they had me send it in. After several weeks, they let me know that the screen and battery had defects and they had to send me a new model. When I received the new model, it was in a box with writing on it (as if someone had sent their laptop back to Dell in it) and there was a refurbished sticker on the back, but the storage was now 512 GB and the OS was Windows 10 Pro. Even though I was upset about getting a refurbished laptop, I just took the free upgrade and kept it.

Here's one for ya. Got an Apple HD Cinema Display (23", Hitachi S-IPS, was given to me by original owner, used in studio until power supply ended itself). Power Supply was all it needed and have been using it ever since. However - and this is apparently something these early units (April 2005) were known for - temporary image retention. Usually worse when hotter from higher backlight settings, and typically goes away within 20 minutes. But it is an odd thing and usually is noticeable only on gray backgrounds. Appears to have a hot pixel but I rarely ever notice that.
Overall I'll say even with these defects it's FAR better than the Samsung TN panel it replaced... The reds on that thing looked pink it was so awful...

The LCD in my Toshiba Satellite L850-166, which I got in like 2011 or 2012, died around 2015-2016ish. A vertical line of purple pixels more to the right but not far from center.
Ripped it out of the laptop and tried it through a controller board, still the same, so the issue is inside the panel (or its own PCB) itself.

About 10-12 years ago, I had a laptop, which was some store brand thing I bought from PC World (UK), refurbished for £300, and it had a glaring bright red pixel in the middle of the screen. At first it annoyed the hell out of me, then over time, my eye ignored it. The laptop was used for DJ'ing work, which was part of my money making empire at the time, so it only got used for maybe 8 - 12 hours a week.

Great vid. Recently bought Samsung C34F791 34" ultrawide 3440x1440p free sync VA panel. Gorgeous monitor, but the experience is marred by a dead pixel in the middle of the screen. Also some hot pixels on the right middle area of the screen. I didn't know the proper term for those until this video, so thank you for that. Because of the sweet deal I got from the retailer (about $600), I was not a fan of returning for a refund so I could just pay more for a replacement later (looks like $750 now). I contacted Samsung per the warranty, and even though it is a small number of problematic pixels, they have agreed to fix or replace it. On the phone, they did ask about pixel location, so bear in mind, if you have this problem, that factor could weigh heavily with respect to what the manufacturer will do for you. I am waiting on the monitor's return arrival this week. So far so good with Samsung USA.

I had a stuck pixel (hot?) that was always white on my Sharp Aquos Quattron LED-LCD TV. Only way I fixed it was applying pressure. I know I got lucky because I was pressing decently hard on a very small point on the screen with two eye glass cleaner clothes and a ball point pen. The screen flickered a couple times while I did this but somehow the pixel isn't stuck anymore without damaging the TV. This was 5 years ago and never had an issue with the TV after that and I still use it today.

Yep. Almost dropped my phone, caught it, but smashed the screen into something else whilst catching it and now I have three stuck pixels near the top of my screen where it got hit. One green, one red, and one blue. Tried running a video of the flashing RGB thing but it didn't do anything. I guess the manual method is my only way to fix this or something.

As a Dell service provider i can tell you That i have Replaced screens on several laptops with dead/stuck pixels totally within warranty. In norway(probably the whole EU) you could just call/email Dell support and They will order a DSP to either your office/Home or Any preferred location.
On This model We usually never Split the cover, backlight or the panel of the screen. We just unscrew the hinges from the base and replace the whole «upper half» of the Pc so you wont have any issue figuring out if the fault was in the backlight or panel.

Is there an easy to reference video that explains the naming schemes of the different panels and what each type do? I keep hearing "TN" and/or "IPS" when reviews touch on a display for laptops but there's no Techquickie video, to my knowledge, that explains what they really do and what it means to use IPS over TN for the general consumer that doesn't see a difference between those two. Would be nice to have a crash course video about them, thanks! =3

My DELL U2711 had a "zero dead pixel" return policy. That's for higher-end models, and I'm not sure if they still have that or not but probably (I also got a one-day return with pre-paid waybill plus packaging without spending a single cent when my monitor failed). For PIXELS again, I've also seen policies such as:
    1) must have more than NINE dead pixels anywhere on the screen, or
    2) more than THREE in a given diameter (like an inch... similar to a grouping in shooting).

I powered my Chromebook Pixel up one day after a month or so of not using it and the screen had a horizontal line down the middle of the screen which pretty much made it unusable, and of course it was out of warranty. Luckily my Google-fu led me to instructions to troubleshoot the issue by powering down the laptop and pressing the spots that were stuck, which was pretty much the entire middle of the screen. Powered it back on and the line was mostly gone, gave a couple more presses on the screen and the line was completely gone and hasn't come back sense :)

I had a similar issue with mine, though mine was a Korean monitor from CrossOver. It came out with one dead (it was and still is black) and a lot of stuck pixels, that I fixed pressing them, and then some reappeared over the time, but after almost two years of use, these were fixed again. Now I have two stucks/dead pixels (they are orangeish), one on almost the middle of the screen and the other on top of it.
The dead pixel I have is on the right bottom corner, that doesn't bother me like the stuck ones that I can't really fix. I told about these to the seller and he refunded like 90$, so it was ok.
Most companies get their panels from the same supply and jsut slap their own stand and firmware over them, so nobody is safe here.

10 months after i bought a 144hz TN screen (asus mg248q), woke up one morning with screen on (stupid win10 autoupdates) and noticed 'dirt' on screen which couldnt get removed, then i realized its inside the screen, either dust or a bug, covering ~6 pixels (almost in the center of the screen) :-/ tried using a suction cup with no success, probably cuz whatever is inside, i squished it before

I just got a beautiful new ASUS Zephyrus 14" laptop with two small slight scuffs about the size of a pixel on the display, but it looks otherwise perfect in regards to backlight bleed and color evenness. I've purchased so many displays over the years and pretty much all of them have some defects, and this is minor enough that I'm not going to play the display lottery and risk it being even worse.

there are guides to unstuck pixels. one of the steps to try is to unplug the display. press on the spot with the bad pixels. then plug it in and turn it on and after the screen comes on realease it and if it doesnt work then maybe lightly massage it. there are other things to try. just google it

When I got a new Dell monitor back in February I noticed a green stuck pixel right near the center. I gently pushed the area around it and it went away. Only happened maybe 5 more times within a month of getting it and hasn’t been stuck since. Maybe it was an easier fix since it’s a TN panel?

I just got a dell 27 UltraSharp that had a dead pixel and they actually shipped me out a new monitor even though they didn't have to. Unfortunately the new monitor also has a dead pixel, so I'm waiting to hear back right now. I'm assuming I'll have to live with one of the monitors, but I appreciated Dell's support.

I'm here to lend insight that might help some of you accept your dead pixel. I want you to go look at yourself in the mirror and identify one flaw about yourself that you can't fix. It doesn't have to be something catastrophic. It can be something as simple as assymetry in your face, a blemish, the thickness of your eyebrows, whatever...just find something. Now I want you to imagine all of the other amazing things about you. The other 3686399 awesome things about you that you like. Now go look at the dead pixel on your monitor and then think about the other 3686399 pixels that work great. You and your monitor have now bonded over your imperfections. You are imperfect and so is your monitor, and yet you are both still beautiful despite your flaws.

Ha... I used to have dozens of dead ants underneath the glass of my monitor. I play Warthunder and need to spot that one black pixel to spot the enemy and it gets really annoying (they'r all over the screen), but it still has markers so I decide to keep it. But then it got "bleach", for lack of better term. There's white washout (hence the name) area in the screen that I thought was because I accidentally smacked it when I was swinging around my electric mosquito swatter. At first it's small and very faint but grow bigger and stronger until it covers over half the screen so I finally decided to retire it and get a new one, it's probably 10 years old anyway.
And now that also got this weird 4 black and yellow line (2 each) running across the monitor 1 pixel width spaced by 1 pixel 4 pixels from the bottom. The black seems dead but the yellow seems to be still somewhat responding, to things 8 pixels beneath it... It might still be under warranty but they'r really dodgy and annoying here so I feel lazy to do it.

And about 5-10% of them went blue or green, it was mainly red (the amount i was smashing it on the table i'm surprised the screen didn't crack or break, which is why i'm now on my second s6 edge, great durability for a phone)

I don't know about the newer displays, but the older LCDs you could "message" the area around the problem pixel, and many times, restore it to a working state. And/Or run programs that "exercise" the pixels...but looking at your system, it looks like someone roughly handled that are of the display before it was installed into the chassis. As someone who repairs laptops, I have to be very careful when handling them not to squeeze them too hard, or you can end up with problems like yours.

My LG 24mk430 had recently gotten a little problem. One day I was doing digital art, and then the very next day I woke up and noticed not just a little dot but a whole little black speck underneath my screen. I didn't know if it was dust underneath the screen or a cluster of dead pixels that all just appeared at once. So I tried opening my monitor and ended up cracking my screen. at least its at the edge. i just bought a samsung chg70 32" so i know what you mean about worrying about bad pixels and the fact that it can kind of let the air out of a new purchase. i still havent done any extensivee tests for bad pixels but it looks good for now. was very worried cause i bought the unit refurb and thought surely it must have some dead pixels or else why would it be returned. i actually think the reason it was returned was possibly someone who bought it from a retailer who had a "no questions asked" return policy and bought it for hdr support which i wouldnt recommend. its only got 8 dimming zones and the state of hdr is kinda iffy with anything other than THE latest games and such on anything but top of the line tv's. a lot of games that actually support hdr are really assuming a displayHDR 1000 ceritified display and the 600 and 400 ones are not really targeted as they came out before the didferent certs were available. if you find a game like final fantasy 15 which can be adjusted for luminance it mostly works right where some of the older games and games that got support much earlier assume 1000 support (im assuming) and when viewed on a 600 panel dont look right. anyway ive gotten off topic but if anyone is interested on a decent deal on this or any samsung monitor go to woot.com and click computers in the category and then go down to samsung displays. if the chg70 is not there or is sold out just check back everybday until it is. you will get one within a week or 2 and the price is 399 plus 25 shipping. its a bit high for a refurb but this display costs 550 on sale new and up to 650-700 at regular prices. just dont buy it for HDR. if you just want a 32" 1440p 144 panel with a really nice stand and maybe youre in the market for freesync 2 then that alone is enough to sell this monitor. and it does look good. but if you are just buying it for HDR then my advice would be to wait at least til the end of the year to see what comes out or look at an HDR tv as a secondary gaming screen with a regualr monitor as your main panel for day to day stuff

It is always purple when some things are on the display but other times it is off because its in the bottom left corner and not on the video. Basically it is purple depending on whats happening(certain colors being shown) on the display.

Only ever had 1 dead/stuck pixel on my Monoprice Zero G 1440p monitor. Was really upset about it at first after paying $400 for a monitor in 2014. It being an off brand monitor I knew there was little I could do about it. Its green on light colors and a deep red-ish color on darker colors. Unless you know where it is and look for it you usually don't notice it. Most people cannot find it when I tell them my screen has a dead pixel.

Are you sure it's a dead pixel and not dust under the screen? To test that, open notepad or chrome, maximize to cover the screen in white and put the cursor on the dot, if the dot moves across the cursor when viewing at different angles, it's probably dust, especially on the edges of panels where dust can seep in.
Easy fix is to take a small suction cup over the spot, turn the screen so the edge with the dust is on the bottom, very carefully pull the glass from the screen and tap it and the panel behind, if your lucky you'll see it move and with a little effort and gravity, it'll fall out.
Just don't make the mistake I did thinking it was a dead pixel and end up pressing the dust more into the panel.

I bought an LG LCD a few years ago. After about 60 days their was a cluster of 3 dead pixels in the center of the screen. LG had me RMA the unit, and sent me a refurb with a dead pixel cluster right out of the box. I RMA'd that unit, and got a refurb unit with stuck red pixels near center screen right out of box. I RMA'd that unit. LG then sent me my original monitor ( SAME SERIAL no.) with the same exact problem I sent it in with. I got my money back. Apparently LG only pretends to fix refurb units, and sends out the same garbage that comes in untouched.
