    I've tried with both almonds and charcoal, the almonds are so much better. The charcoal easily runs, for some reason, the burnt almonds don't. At least that's how it worked for me. 😊

    A quick tip, too, for those who don't have a green thumb, is finding a store that sells aloe vera stems individually. I have done this quite cheaply at Asian or Latin stores here in the U.S.

    Omg I was thinking of trying to make mascara using these same ingredients! Now I know I can! Aloe grows wild where I live, and I can get bulk coconut oil and charcoal at the health food store, where I can reuse my glass containers.

    How does this mascara hold up on your lashes? Does it smudge? Also is the charcoal fine? Because I made some activated charcoal myself with almonds and the mascara didn't turn out fine enough.
    Another thing: How do you store your mascara wand?
    great video btw! ;)

    Please don't think I'm giving you a hard time, but the coconut oil isn't a good idea. You really have to be so very careful with oil of any kind around the eye. Over time small amounts can actually get behind the eye and cause problems. It wasn't that long ago that Johnson & Johnson faced a class action law suit for recommending in their baby oil commercials that the oil could be use for removing makeup. A few short years later the law suit was filed after many woman had had to undergo surgery on their eyes to flush out the oil from behind the eye ball. This is not a surgery anyone would want to undergo - it has to be performed while the patient is conscious.. it gives me shivers just thinking about it. It's also very costly, hence the law suit. I know tons of woman remove their makeup with coconut oil and other oils. Yes, it's zero waste, but as someone struggling with other eye problems, I can attest to how important our eyesight is. Believe me it's no fun trying to measure out ingredients to make your zero waste healthier products when you're struggling to see. Eye makeup and remover is the one thing where you have to be most careful. Screwing up a zero waste hand lotion? No biggie.. but getting oil in the eyes... you really don't want to go there. Actually, I think the recipe would just be best without the coconut oil. The point of mascara is that it dry and be a bit "cakey". I suspect that keeping it simple is just best. Aloe and activated charcoal. I love the idea of making it with the almonds as in your last video. Also, I'm dying to know why you make such a big batch - do you go thru it that fast? Your efforts really get an A++ - - it's obvious how hard you're trying to be completely zero waste. But don't be so hard on yourself - no one can be perfect all the time, and I think Bea Johnson said it in her book too. Thanks for sharing! Hope this helps. Cheers.

      I agree with you. Just put castor oil and organic extra virgin olive oil, charcoal, and the aloe Vera gel. In a cobalt blue glass 2oz jar. Save the wand from your favorite mascara and voila. I don't know there is something malignant about coconut oil. It causes acne (acne prone skin people). Its bad. But all the other oils are not. Castor oil is used in my restasis drops.

      I can't find anything about oil affecting eye health either and no info about a class action about baby oil, and there's certainly no coconut oil in J&J baby oil - it's petroleum based.

      @Mony's cell I am so grateful for your reply 👍 because I was about to make that mistake and after my father losing his sight to diabetes I don't take my sight for granted. So aloe vera and charcoal it is. Because every mascara I bought has irritated and caused bumps around my eyes. I want to wear make up

  • @liavivas

    Ok, going out on a limb here. My old mascaras are finally done. I threw them out. I was using a brand that used recicled plastic for the packaging and was cruelty free, but now... I want a cleaner, friendlier option and that got me thinking about the whole concept of putting a black thing (powder, gel, anything) in my eyes and being ok with it. I know this has been done for centuries but I also know some of it can enter your eyes... Anyways, I'm not ready to give up on the look of Fuller lashes just yet so I was thinking, wouldn't it be better to get a pair of magnetic lashes (I know they're plastic, bear with me) that you take care of and use over and over again. No glue no black goo, just in and out for the look. (Kinda like contacts except I need those to be able to see hahaha) so, what do you all think?

    I'd love to add a little bit of beeswax in there for it to harden like a solid mascara but oily enough to scrape with a spoolie brush. Adding a bit of beeswax can help harden it and add staying power on your lashes.

    • @Gittemary
      @Gittemary  5 лет назад

      I am generally cautious about adding wax to eye products, just because I've heard horror stories about it gathering in the back of the eye and has to be removed with surgery. I don't know how great the risk is though

    What do you mean towards the end where you say to keep it dry? Isn't it a gel consistency? (Or do you mean store it in a dry area?) Also, how long do you think this will keep, since it makes a large quantity?

    • @Gittemary

      I mean do not mix it with water, and ofc keep it out of dry areas :) I hope it will last a few weeks :)

    I tried to do it, but the gel don't mix with the oil. The pigment is only in the aloe and does not paint black, and it never dries! I will use it on my hair to not waste it. But I am very sad.

  • @nohemigomez9338
    @nohemigomez9338 6 лет назад

    Mine came out super oily it doesn't work. Either it was super sticky with the alovera, even after blending and 'Cooking " the whole thing.

    • @therapistizzy2266
      @therapistizzy2266 5 лет назад

      Aloe Vera and coconut oil is oily. It needs a drying substance. Mix it with beeswax. If not carnauba wax. They sell it on Amazon as palates. These makes the mascara shinier but denser. The more wax the harder it gets. Add 1/2 teaspoon every 2 oz. This will make it creamy. Instead of coconut oil use Shea butter unrefined organic or organic raw mango butter for that smooth creamy look. And instead of aloe Vera gel use organic castor oil it's meant to make eye lashes grow plus it's super shiny. Your eyelashes will stand out
      I make my own mascara 100% organic. Vegan and sell it on Amazon

    • @Gittemary
      @Gittemary  5 лет назад

      It is super super difficult to guide people in other countries when it comes to bulk, because it varies A LOT. My suggestion would be to find sustainable/ eco health and beauty shops, they will often have options, or at least know if there are any in the area.

      Try using beeswax. If your allergic try candelilla wax. Or carnauba wax. Candelilla wax is harder then beeswax but vegan since it comes from a plant. But so beneficial and shines more.
