Hey everybody, thanks for watching this video on Chance the Rapper. I was once a huge fan of his, but now I don't really know anymore. His journey from 10 Day to Acid Rap to Coloring Book to The Big Day has been strange. He's gone up and down in quality and I'm not too sure where he'll go next.

How? He still performing just as well as he did with coloring book n acid rap. As of right now his latest project is getting lots of views n streams along with media attention like this guy. @@marvdontmiss4350 the middle section + hot showers were the worse parts of the album. The beginning and end of the album was the highlight of the whole album. When you dont think of the "OH I LOVE MY WIFE" Stuff about the album its actually a decent album. If the whole album was shorter (rather than 20 something songs to more of like 15) it would've been more focused and even better.
@@literallyjosh so out of 24 tracks 6 were good since you said beginning and end were the highlights so even if this album only had 15 tracks it would still be an F nothing can save this album
He told us what happened. He said the big day was inspired by his wedding day. He was married in March. Meaning this album came together in like 4 months. I refuse to believe this was a 3 year long work otherwise.
You might be right
On point
He’s been engaged for a while so the album was inspired for the time leading to the wedding aswell so the album was probably a year or so into the making, still no excuses for how bad it was
Tru tru
Dude it was just a bad album. It happens. The ideas were boring, the artwork was lazy and the execution was poor.
Onwards and upwards for Chance.
Someone told me "this sounds like a youth pastor trying to make hip songs for the kiddos" and now I can't un-picture that every time I hear a song off this album.
Mayan Ruins see I’m completely the opposite, I’m religious and acid rap is by far his best project 😂
He ALWAYS sounded like this lol. I could never fade Chance. Just never moved me
@Mayan Ruins false news. I loved Coloring Book and Acid Rap. I guess the main issue I had with this album was the length. far too boring for a 22 track album

I always roll my eyes whenever people say a musician loses their mojo after they get married or get off the drugs, but hearing this album made me think they were probably on to something.
It's like when Bob Dylan got religious, they both suddenly had a big life changing moment and decided they needed to write music celebrating it. Problem is, it's brand new to them and they have no idea how to properly write about it, so they come across as cheesy and corny.
Those Bob Dylan albums aren't good... but they're nowhere near as bad as The Big Day
That is a great way to put it. Its not the content its how its being portrayed through music. He doesn't know how to pull this off
Very good point man

Acid rap?
I said it in the comment section of the song and I'll say it here:
Hot Shower sounds like what people who don't like hiphop think all hiphop sounds like.
This just proves once again that the best albums are made on acid.
it stimulates new synapse connections in the brain, so creatively a musician can just make a totally novel product. it has a really long half life so a lot of work can get done in a single setting. you cannot really lie to yourself while on it either, so it forces the true face of the artist to be revealed at some point. while people have used it for nefarious ends, when a person lacking mental health issues experiences this molecule, they usually focus in non-superficial topics that have universal appeal. i think every person should experience it at least once when they are in a good place in their life if only to experience a piece of history, aka haight-ashbury, the 60s, and how our modern world triumphed over the past. especially given it hit right after the impact crater of 1945...

Okay so I have a bit of a theory. You know when struggle rappers come out, they release a great album, then they're no longer struggling, they release an album on how life is better now, then after that, there's no content. I think Chance is such a different person from Acid Rap days that he only talks about what he knows now.
As crappy as it sounds, to him it's life. This happens across all music genres. A lot of rock bands back in the day suffered the same shit. They were struggling and putting out real gritty stuff. Then the get happy and don't have that struggle to tap into. Good art comes from struggle. This goofy shit comes from good marriages. Lol
But some of the concepts could have been good. That's not the problem. It's the execution of it all.
I think you’re right I mean drake sort of did that if you think about with his first three but the stuff he raps about now is more of his struggles and where he is now but it still is made well and he makes songs that can still relate and maybe that’s because he isn’t married but chance has nothing to rap about when everyone loves him and the biggest thing that happened between coloring book and big day was he got married, a few Grammies, and more mainstream fans so I feel he just talked about what happened while trying to appeal to the new mainstream audience idk
This is right on the nail and being a Chance fan i noticed he is very literal in his approach. 10day revolved around his school suspension, acid rap inspired by doing acid and also acid jazz music. And so on. I like The Big Day because I get it down to its core.
He had a bad album, but people have bad albums. (This is my opinion) I dont like Tyler the creator's cherry bomb. But, he pulled himself up with Flowerboy and Igor.
Wow I didn't really care for igor but I liked cherry bomb and am ok with flower boy that's crazy
Cherry Bomb was like Yeezus. It’s either you love it or hate it. I personally like it but I can see why people hate it and some songs like Self-Titled and Keep da O’s we’re straight ass.
Couldn’t stand Tyler’s music and then I heard Igor. Love that album.
@@Alan.livingston Listen to Wolf
The thing about Cherry Bomb is that people didn't like it because it sounded radically different then Tyler's other work, and as a follow up from Tyler's album "Wolf" was incredibly dissapointing, in hindsight, the album isnt bad (Kinda like yeezus, CB has some bangers like Fucking Young/Perfect and Deathcamp) its just not very cohesive. The Big Day is straight ass, it offers no unique sounds, no challenging ideas, and for an stale album made in like half a year, the runtime is too fucking long. Frank Ocean's shits sound better than The Bid Day. I hope chance can pull himself back from this one. Tylers talent never left him, he just went against the grain in a way that fell flat, so he was able to channel it back and focus and drop personal, inspired albums like IGOR and flower boy. I think Chances talent jumped out of a god damn airplane.
Yupp listened to that record in 2013 too. It was way more fun and playful than so many other things at the time. That and Yeezus of course.
Honestly, after watching Fantano tearing that album to shreds, your video seems pretty mild in comparison so don't you worry about dislikes, everyone wanted to love this album and no one did.

Chance was doing a lot of drugs in his days of 10 day and acid rap and after acid rap he went into rehab bc of his crazy amount lsd use and the reason of his music sounding different is bc of rehab and it brainwashing him into a more healthy and religious life
Its simple, he got married, he got closer to the gospel and hes a dedicated family man. Thats whats goin on in his life so thats what hes gonna rap about. Only married for 6 months lmao. Thata not even marriage
Daniel Loomis as dumb as your comment sounds I cannot help but kinda agree 😂
Even if what you’re saying is true there were so many better perspectives he could have taken. Rather than rap about how great he feels now that he’s married, why not rap about the highs, lows, struggles and flows of his relationship which led him to marriage?
The whole album lacked authenticity and as some other reviewer said, we don’t even know who his wife is so why should we care that she’s happy.

To be fair, those singles he released in 2018 and early 2019 were amazing.
I didn’t mind some of songs individually , but as an album you can’t keep rapping and singing about your wedding day and wife .. for 22 songs straight
Rory Lennon not even concept albums talk about said concept throughout their entirety.
In acid rap , he talked about intercourse with woman in quite a few songs , is that not equivalent to him repeating the fact that he's married ?
seems right he talked about doing drugs, sleeping with women, gun violence in Chicago, loss of innocence and loads of other topics.
This album was literally titled “The Big Day” and was about his wedding and his wife.

When I started watching this video I completely forgot about the album even existing and thought this was going to end up with the video trashing Coloring Book and was sooo ready to defend it or at least note the RUclipsr so I could disregard any further opinions. The Big Day was a trash Chance album, even if I still rock with a few of the songs.
Hot Shower rocks.
Chance changed, he grew up.
His messy creativity of trying to do something different is gone. Listening to acid rap felt like it all connected, chance on the mixtape was not afraid to take risks.
10 day in its own right felt different and it all connected, he was not afraid to take risks.
Colouring Book also felt connected, he took his voice from the last two mixtapes and refined it in a good way.
The Big Day just sounds bland boring and uninspired, there were no risks taken, his crazy voice and creative lines, were gone.
And like you said this album doesn’t have what I felt in love with chances’ mixtapes.
this intro brought me back to senior year in HS man
jake champion I was a sophomore then, now I’m turning 22 god damn time flies

VERRY NICE
Chance just matured over time, He’s my favorite rapper and I loved AcidRap, Coloring Book, and 10Day. I was very upset while listening to TBD, it was not good and was way too long. There were a few songs that were good but overall it wasn’t on par with his previous mixtapes.
could not agree more
Literally before this album came out I said "I think it's gonna flop, but I'll like it". And that's exactly what happened. While I don't like it as much as acid rap or coloring book (my favorite chance project) I still enjoyed most of it
Personally, I fell in love with Chance's soft voice, not his unpredictability. When I heard Cocoa Butter Kisses for the first time, I found an appreciation for the way he is able to sound sweet. I also love Surf-- it's my favorite project he's ever done. Hearing this new album was definitely surprising, but I didn't find anything very shocking. It's no secret that Chance has become very commercialized with his new fame, so I feel like he built this album with the idea that it would go viral like the others. Honestly, Do You Remember was my favorite song off of this album. It reminded me of the soft, sweet vibe that Sunday Candy and (part of) Cocoa Butter Kisses brought.
I liked the album, look Chance's work is not a constant, 10 day is pretty different from Acid Rap, which is different from CB, which is different from TBD, comparing them is pretty unfair.
Maybe the rhyme scheme and lyrics aren't as "fancy"/good as in his previous works, but one thing is that Chance remains pure, all of these productions reflect a different period of his life and he just explicitly let's us know about his growth as a person. As a Chance fan, I was shook when I first heard and a bit disappointed, but because I was expecting something more like coloring book and groceries, but the thing is you can't have expectations because Chance is out here making music to please people, he is putting out his thoughts, feelings and emotions and that's why it just sounds so different. Imo this album is far from bad and has lots of great songs in it, I wouldn't call it a masterpiece, a classic, but calling it bad just shows that you didn't give it a fair chance
Can u do a video abt the best of the first tracks on albums
That doesn’t make sense because everyone has different opinions on the best tracks, your literally asking another person to pick out your favorite tracks for you. People who ask these questions are considered barracudas
MC- CSzn first 3, We Go High, Handsome?, 5 year plan, Sun Come Down, Hook to Zanies and Fools
MC- CSzn How? All he’s asking for are what this guy thinks is the best intro tracks, it’s a common thing people talk about. A bunch of people do it. It’s a forum for people to discuss hiphop and it’s a common thing people debate. It’s not that deep bro.
The phrase “so-and-so lost their edge” is usually woefully lacking and fails to adequately detail what went wrong and how....but in this case I feel like it’s actually pretty apt. Chance just done straight lost.his.edge.
It took me a couple of listens, but I came to realize that this is the first project that you can tell Chance was worried about his kids listening to. There’s a lot of material on his previous projects (particularly 10 Day and Acid Rap, but even the wholesome-on-the-surface Coloring Book) that would be awkward to have your kids hear. So this seems to be his first kid-friendly album by design...and it doesn’t suit him.
Now don’t get me wrong: it’s awesome that Chance is so happy and fulfilled in his personal life. I couldn’t be happier for him that he’s carved out a satisfying life for himself with a loving family, religion, charitable causes, etc. But art is a fickle thing. It’s a cliché to say “the best art comes from adversity” but for many artists this is true. Filmmakers like M. Night Shyamalan and George Lucas made amazing movies when they were down and out, bucking the system. But when they became rich and successful and settled down with families and lives of their own, their art took a back seat. Which is only natural and, frankly, healthy for them as human beings. It’s a good thing......for them.
For us? The older I get and the more art I consume, I’m starting to realize the more our favorite artists suffer, the more we as the audience tend to benefit. It’s almost a blessing people like Jimi Hendrix died so young and so troubled because we never had to see them go the Clapton route. Cruel, I know, but also undeniably true.
The film _Whiplash_ deals with this concept masterfully. It’s all about the constant pull that exists within those driven to make art: do I prioritize my life or my legend? Do I sacrifice my happiness to make art that truly matters? Is that worth it? Does investing in other people help enrich my existence or hold me back from greatness? If you haven’t seen it, definitely remedy that because it’s an incredible film, but it’s also a very sad and chilling film at times because it largely asserts that true art and true happiness are mutually exclusive entities and cannot exist in one’s life at the same time.
Very well written 👍
Album sounds like the soundtrack to an 3rd grade talent show and the kids are all missing steps.
Everyone is talking about his shitty verses, but personally if the flow and production was great I could have looked past the corny lines. But instead it sounds like 15 people were working on a song in total isolation of each other.
We may never know but I wonder if Chance just couldn’t say NO to anyone. The credits are massive and for a massive project like this you need a leader to say what will and won’t make it into the album. Instead it sounds like he wanted to put everything he liked into a record without considering if any of it coheres with each other.
I don’t think he really cares anymore. He even said in the album announcement, he doesn’t owe us anything and he’s just enjoying life. I think he’s more so interested in the platform and opportunities music gave him than the music itself anymore. Pretty disappointing to see, hopefully he can bounce back
Could someone update me about how chance's life is going I just need to check up it's already been 3 minutes since he told about his wife I'm worried
