Eminem deserves everything he got imo. He went through it to get started and it took him 3 albums to really get going (slim shady lp)
And as a black guy Eminem is my fav rapper of all time abd has some of my favourite albums if all time. But I ofc agree with the white America point, but I wouldn't credit all his success to him being white/having a white fan base. He has a very culturally diverse fan base and people like Kanye also now at least have a very very large white fan base aswell. And imo Eminem wasn't making "white hip hop" he was making hip hop for hip hop lovers, studying the great and inspiring future greats

If something is associated with an ethnicity (being apart of the culture) then yeah, if you're mocking the culture then you shouldn't partake in it. Some people do mock a culture. They do this by taking what made something great in a culture and distorting it to the point of unrecognition. This is bad because instead of giving homage to what you've contributed your success to, what usually comes out is a bastardized, low quality, corny/cringy, soulless product. This is what people mean when they say culture appropriation, while I believe that it has been used out of the right context a lot, making it lose it's meaning, I still believe that a lot of people do it. For eminem i feel like he wasn't really accepted by the existing community but was able to get widespread success commercially due to the fact that he was more marketable to white people who is the vast majority of the US. The thing is with Eminem though is that he is actually talented which lead to the existing community start to slowly accept him over time. It is hard for white rappers especially in the early 2000s to get credit for how good they are from the existing hiphop community but was a lot easier to get credit from casually listeners and is why em has always done really well commercially

    • @nox2sweet

No disrespect, but I don't think I agree with the not accepted by the hip hop community as Em earned his stripes and respect in battle rap and had the backing of Dr. Dre early in his career, which could only come from people respecting him. Some of this stuff makes sense but as for Eminem. You can't claim he used "being white" as a booster for fame. Eminem respected the rap game and worked his way from the bottom. The reason Dre signed him rather than some other record label is, quote by Dre "everyone was racist against Eminem for being white and trying to join the rap community". They basically thought since he was white he didn't belong in the game. But Dre signed him and the rest is history.

Aesop and Slug have been around longer, Slug built his record label, and Aesop is one of the most intricate wordsmiths. They both came out of the same underground movement as El-P. @Thomas Buchovecky I disagree. Connecting with an audience requires a lot of nuance. Additionally, a huge part of being good is in the lyrics. That’s the difference between a one hit wonder and rapper that makes it big time. Now just because white rappers and black rappers might have different messages or experiences does not mean that the their is a problem with white rappers. The video tries to make the case that white rappers do not represent the culture that was established through rap, as if that is all there is to rap. However, that is simply not true. Rap is about cadence, rhythms, and sharing experiences through lyrical twist and turns. Meaning rap is about connecting a beat to some lyrics and telling a story and sharing lyrics. It’s about expressing oneself for varying reasons or crying out for a group of people. Now all of this is not exclusive to black rappers. The video specifically cites Eminem as being a problem white rapper but according to your position do you still think that’s true? Do you think that Eminem lacks depth and nuance?

@@simonbright2975 No one is saying Eminem is only popular due to him being white, but him being white is a huge and undeniable factor in his colossal commercial success, it gave him access to an entire untapped demographic that would otherwise not listen to hip hop music, especially during the early 2000s due to gangsta rap being the dominant form in the mainstream, I agree that artists like DOOM or Freddie Gibbs aren't the best pick to compare since their works were never radio friendly to begin with, but even if we look at artists like Kanye or Kendrick, both people who made some of the best records in mainstream hip hop, we can still see them overshadowed by Eminem's extremely average later works in the 2010s, hell Macklemore won the grammy over those two, if that isn't indicative of white privilege I don't know what is.
It's not so much about Eminem himself, it's more about the audience that listens to him and why they do so, I guarantee you a majority of people who listen to Eminem are completely ignorant about the history of hip hop or the classics of the genre, Eminem is all but musically a pop artist, he is treated like one by the mainstream, and even he admits so in his own words, the quote is right there in the video.

I’m a white guy but I heavily dislike most white rappers mainly because they try and follow the same stereotype that Eminem started, the reason why Mac Miller is so respected, loved and never gets the “he’s the best white rapper” treatment is because he separates himself from the stereotypes, you don’t have to be like “i like black people” or “I don’t like white people we take stuff” to be accepted, if anything people will push you away just like Macklemore, on another note though, not every white rapper has to “acknowledge privilege” because not every rapper is American and that’s just facts, and as for white people supporting white rappers that’s fax but that’s normal, and tbh most fans at any rappers shows are white whether the artist is white or black and they get criticised for that, but white people are allowed to be big fans of white rappers and saying it’s “weird” is a weird thing lol, sure they’re more drawn to it but don’t try and overanalyse something that’s just not even there

The big seperation in rap is not black vs white, it's genuine vs wack.
There's a lot of wack black rappers out there too, and to me they're no better than frat boy rappers. If you're spoiled and narcissistic, have no soul or connection, then it just isn't worth listening to.
These horrible frat boy rappers you mentioned, they're not horrible because they're white. They're horrible because they're spoiled little brats. Doesn't matter if it's Mike Stud or Rick Ross, it's still wack and makes you feel you lost brain cells.
Yet no-one would make big points about narcissistic black rappers being black, the way you made a big point of these frat rappers being white. You would never have the guts to make a video like that. So, it doesn't seem genuine if you don't have the balls to do criticism honestly. Trying to be woke just for the sake of it, is something you do because you want people to think something about you. Not because you want to be genuine or express something that is real.
The points about privilege though, is spot on. You could have made this video more about that, there's more to be said here. That would be an interesting video, I'm not anti-woke. I'm just anti people who're trying to be woke to seem cool.

When it comes to white rapper album sales I can't hold the numbers against them. We are in America. America is majority white. It's the demographics. It doesn't really bother me.
Now what bothers me are white rappers that copy eminem because they think he's the end all be all.
Hip hop was always about being unique and having your own style. Guys like logic and NF use a similar style and it's a little insulting.
The battle rapper disaster is in the same boat copying ems style and thinking somehow that'll make him better than everyone else.
The first thing I judge from a white rapper is they style. If they're unique I love them if not a side eye them l.
    Ps I love Yelawolf

Being in a super-diverse high school when Em blew up he really crossed all the boundaries. White kids loved him, black kids loved him. There's a reason huge black rappers at the time wanted to work with him, something that had never really happened with a white rapper before: because he grew up in the culture and put in the work. But post-hiatus Eminem is another beast entirely. He might be better than ever on a technical level but his actual songs are mostly awful, and the endless fawning of his (almost-exclusively white these days) fanbase over every half-baked idea he shits out is extremely sus. @H Flores There will never be another rapper like him period. Em's his own thing when it comes to his niche, and no white rapper will reach his success because the stigma of all these race-baiting rappers who rap just to ride off the white rapper gimmick will stick with them, and none of them will accept the fact that they got a boost from white fans who want to see a white guy rapping on stage. They won't accept that those people exist. And if they do, and they accept that they do have an inherent advantage on startup, some still won't handle it well. The reason Em is still respected is because he acknowledged it but didn't feed it. unlike Tom McDonald and all the other shitheads who DO feed into it today. It's about the art, and the sooner someone stays true to that as a white guy, the sooner people will be cool with them. Otherwise they only get white fans who are too afraid to listen to people like Vince Staples or some of the older shit because It makes them uncomfortable based on their skin.

Yeat is the only artist to emerge recently that simultaneously doesn't make terrible music and clearly respects the culture. I think Yeat is respected because he has a distinct sound, but also has clear influences. He's also innovating on trap music a LOT and that's why he's so popular and no one has said anything about him being white at all.

  • @jultdi5273

Eminem's popularity isn't just because hes white(yes it played a part in his success after his acceptance in rap), but he stayed true to hip hop and has respect by every top rapper. The problem with eminem has nothing to do with with with how he treats hip hop as a white person. He is at the same time the most overhated and overated rapper by hip hop fans because he has a couple of corny lines, and some bad songs but at the same time he is still technically good at rapping and can make lyrical songs. Eminem doesn't really do the lyrical miracle thing(that was just a free style) but he is made fun of for "yelling into the microphone" and he is an old head. The dislike of eminem comes from the fact that people dont like his newer music specifically.

was back in the day during Vietnam.

Eminem is a lot like Redman tbh and during the mid 90s he was a bit like Nas/AZ. Since he's a Top 5 rapper ever and Top 100 artist ever it's logical that he'd sell a lot. But having a key to a demographic that's locked off for 95% of other rappers is why he sells significantly more. Him and Royce are similar in skill which even Em will say. But because of image and promotion their sales represent a much wider gap than their skill. Realistically he would not be as big if he were a different shade but he'd be much more respected which is unfortunate bc he did a lot for the game & culture that's ignored by people based on things he can't control. Overall it's important to appreciate him for his efforts but recognize how it was able to get to that point. I put him in the same tier as Nas and Jay-Z but people who will illogically put him above or below based on skin tone is annoying.

@@worldtree2027 royce is definitely better than em. but if you know royce's story than we cant run with "em was white so thats why he was bigger" ..royce turned down working with dre and sought out a different path, he made 1 million off his contract elsewhere. he also fucked up his image a lot in his younger days by being drunk and off the hinges and just somebody people did not want to work with and even started beefing with eminem and d12. after rehashing the friendship, it was kind of too late because rap changed, no lyrical rappers were really poppin, it turned to the party shit and the dumbass mumble age and skinny jeans.. and also Eminem jst has a horrible person to sign to, i mean look at the long list of people who were once signed to him, the prblem is thatt hes is still an artist and him and the label are going to put all their efforts into HIM not artists underneath him, he overshadows everybody and thats bad if youre trying to come up - theres no reason slaughterhouse should have failed - but the record company and eminem interjected themselves too much into the project, picking beats and singles etc, and also mismanaged them, didnt promote them right, etc hence the joe buddens problem with the label and eminem.
ultimately Royce is living a great life, his pen game iss incredible as i stated hes better than Eminem at this stage, no doubt...but he made poor decisions along the way, which is just due to being young and drinking and a company throwing a million dollars in your hands when you werent ready for that. he didnt have a team behind him like Eminem ALWAYS has be it the Outsidaz, D12, interscope, dre, paul rosenberg yada yada yada.. Royce was out there pretty much on his own - by his own doing,
