I spent the first 30 years of my life in 'Warfumstow' and lived only a few minutes walk from the station. You would not believe how much it has changed since the 60s. Regarding Ray Dudley Way, I knew him. We both worked for the local hospital radio station and he did a children's show immediately before my Saturday afternoon sports show. A lovely man who did a lot of charity work, and who campaigned for the footpath to be established. Sadly, he died before it was done.
Ah lovely comment, thanks for the info Barry - I admit I did not research who Ray Dudley was but assume it must have been named after someone. Kind words, thanks!
I suspect Geoff is hoping the Overground gets split into six distinct lines not only to make it easier for people to navigate using the Tube map, but also because that's then a load more "End of the Line" videos that can be made. 🙂
The Museum is NOT what I and my co-founders envisaged back in '96. It is interesting but could have been much MORE interesting had there not been so much disagreement over the way it was run.
This is my first tube station. My Gran lived on a suburban street between Chingford and Walthamstow and it was the most amazing thing to get the tube into London. I loved those tiny grey plastic globes hanging from the roof of the tube by metal coils. When I was old enough to hold them...I was a big boy! :)) I probably stretched the coils on a few before then! The smells, the winds, the whole thing just mesmerised this boy from rural Scotland. I still love it.
So as someone who’s visiting London from the states next week - I just found some cool things to add to my itinerary. Thanks Geoff! That supper club sounds super cool.
I live in Walthamstow and as nice a suburban environment as it is it’s probably not worth a visit if you only have limited time in London😅 If you do come I’d check out the village (Orford Road) which has some nice pubs and restaurants, the vestry museum and gods own junkyard
I love the place too, but I agree and would add that it's big enough not to mind being recommended as a miss for a first visit to the capital. Defo somewhere to keep for another visit as a great exemplar of a typical London residential district of its day.
I'm in Chingford so this is my local London Overground line.. I'll always regret that the Victoria Line didn't extrnd to and terminate at Chingford. Could have been done in one more stop.
Hi Gary, I'm in Chingford too ! Wasn't the Victoria Line supposed to carry on east, linking Woodford on the Central Line ? (Or was I dreaming that bit ?)
@@vicsams4431 No I think you're right, they were contemplating terminating the northern section at South Woodford I believe. Not sure why it didn't happen, possibly funding. I suppose the Central Line already connects with the City and West End, so would have been little logistical benefit except reducing over crowding at rush hours.
Walthamstow is my favourite place in London and I really hope that the new and improved station building will come into play very soon, as I’m planning to move to this area next year
Me & my partner went there April 2022 and that AMAZING model railway layout wasn't there, but what was there was an AMAZING cafe where we picked up two buns and two teas for £2.50. Best CAFE ever🎉 This was one of the most F.A.B musemns we have ever been too. Keep up the good work..👏

I was expecting one thing in this video : a clip inside a Vic train when the PA says "This train is for (little blank) WALTHAMSTOW CENTRAL (shouting!)" 🙂 When I get over the pond to visit my friends in London it's always a pleasure, immediately after getting off the Eurostar, to hear that when boarding my first tube train of the trip
I love how the blonde streak in Geoff’s hair keeps appearing and disappearing 😂 I wonder if the blonde hair is coveying a message, like the purple hair for Crossrail opening 😅
Having developed an obsession with the underground as a direct result of your channel, I'm always coming to the channel looking for things to explore when I'm working away in London as i love the history, stories and Easter eggs that are within the tube. You've now shown me somewhere I can combine my underground nerding with the actual f*****g Dennis fire engine from my other major childhood obsession, London's Burning! (series 3-9, replaced with the Volvo FL6 Saxon in Series 10) Absolutely unreal 👏🏾😍 thanks for this Geoff, will certainly be visiting before riding the vicky line back to green park swapping for the Joobs to bermondsey to check out Dockhead station and maybe pop into the ship aground for a pint!
Yes, originally the only means of access to the Victoria Line platforms was from the BR (now Overground) platforms. The subway under the road Geoff referred to then didn't exist, and tickets could only be obtained from the joint ticket offices. Unlike other Victoria Line stations, there were then no automatic ticket gates, just manned barriers to each of the two Chingford line platforms. The site now occupied by the bus station was originally a park, and the bus terminus was immediately in front of the station. How times change!!
After all these years, they still haven't put up proper ceiling finishes on the Victoria Line platforms!! (This also applies to Blackhorse Road and Tottenham Hale stations).
Geoff You need to turn right instead of left out of the stow station on Sherborne walk and head to the Vestry house museum. More to Stow then the pump house museum ! There is also the William Morris museum...
Brilliant program Geoff. So much information conveyed in an entertaining way in only 8 minutes. This is a great series. Looking forward to the next episode.
Brilliant- my local station, and we'll done for publicising the splendid pumphouse museum. Regular users of the underground station will be pleased to know work has started on a much needed new entrance.
The original plans for what is now referred to as Crossrail 2 were in fact the "Chelsea-Hackney" tube. It would have utilised the District Line Wimbledon branch as far as Parsons Green, interchange with the District at Fulham Broadway, then crossing London to take the Central branch from Leytonstone to Hainault.
i love the blonde highlight geoff in your hair but wait the last shot of the video it looks like u had a hair cut. im totally looking for little details now
Sadly the Walthamstow Pumphouse Museum is not what I and the other founders envisaged back in '96. Lots of exhibits have gone from the site as have many of the founders including myself. It is still an interesting place to visit but had there not been so much disagreement about the way the Museum was being run it would be even MORE interesting.
I volunteered with Frank on the Fire Engine 23+ years ago with my Grandad. His name is above the garage door, Freddie. It was a lot of fun raising money for charity and making people smile. The look on people’s faces when we were in traffic and they saw the Blackwall plate was priceless. I also now have one of those Walthamstow mugs and love it. I’ll be visiting again soon
Many thanks, Geoff. I was born and grew up in Walthamstow in the 50s and 60s - the line goes fairly close to under where my secondary school was. I remember the Victoria Line opening and going on the first day of operation from Central to the temporary terminus at Highbury and Islington and back. The line gave Walthamstow a real lift, with the new ability to get to Central London quickly, compared with the slow Chingford to Liverpool Street trains. New bus routes appeared at the same time, to connect with the tube. It was sad, though to see the Green Line coach 718 service (Harlow - Walthamstow - Victoria - Windsor) disappear, as the core of the route was made unnecessary by the new line.
Yes, the 718's partial replacement at the northern end was the 702, which only ran from Walthamstow to Harlow and Bishop's Stortford. (The Victoria to Windsor section continued for many years after). With the cross platform interchange available at Finsbury Park, the usefulness of having the line from Walthamstow was evident from day 1, even more so after the subsequent extensions!!
Back in the '80s, a longer length of the Eastbound platform at Walthamstow Queen's Road was open and there was a set of stairs that led straight into the carpark next to the London-bound platform at Walthamstow Central \m/
Niice! Was born in Walthamstow and after Uni I travelled on the Victoria Line to work in Convent Garden every day, sometimes from W. Central and sometimes from Blackhorse Road. Must go back there and have a look around
Was looking forward to this one as I have very fond memories of arriving at Walthamstow Central, going up the escalators to the bus station and heading off to work. Keep up the good work.
That’s just up the road from where I went to school. Both the bus terminus and tube station look very different from when i used to catch the 69 bus home, back in the early 1980’s
Thank you Geoff for this videos. I left London 6 years ago and one of the things I miss the most is taking the Victoria line everyone morning. These videos make my day every single time.
I love the MALL at Walthamstow... When we visited back in 2018 - We were at a hotel by the Tottenham Hale station. The Victoria Line got shut down for some reason so we had to make our way back on the Overground... Had I realized that Tottenham Hale was as close as it was - We would have walked back...
I used to live in Walthamstow when I went to uni in London back in the early 2010s and would get a bus or train from Walthamstow Central every day, watching this is really nostalgic and really lovely :) Glad to see they've added a little path to the Overground station, that used to be such a weird trek!

E17 is a well known postcode and one that the 90s pop group took its name from. Years ago I once saw Brian Harvey walking near Walthamstow Central.
The first time I saw the Walthamstow tile motif in the 70's was on a black and white photo.
