And now is Truly a Sunrise and Sunset Day. Because our Beloved Topol Just Passed Away at the age of 87, after a fight against Alzheimer. Rest In Peace, Reb Tevye
Even though i am an arab myself and a Lebanese, i don't care what's happening on the boarders of my country when i see this movie. This movie is so meaningful and well made. Fiddler on the Roof is one of the all times classics and I LOVE IT!
A few days after my girlfriends funeral, I found a disc of pictures of sunrises and sunsets that she had made for me. It was in a cover, and the chorus from this song was written on the slick, a hand written note that said 'Thank you for being my sunrise..... ' Sunrise, Sunset. Life. A beautiful song, I only wish I had shared listening to it with her.
Ahhhhhh, my heart goes out to you my friend, and you will most definitely see her and share this lovely song together.....until then ,... Light a candle and play the song ,she will be hearing it with you.
this was the song we requested to be sang for our wedding, I had to write the exact lyrics as in the movie as the singer didn't know the lyrics, 48 years ago & we're still together.
Bittersweet but not sad. A wedding is not just a time of celebration but also a time of reflection. You look to the past as well as the future. Your child is no longer a child and is embarking on a life of their own and this song is a beautiful expression of the mixed emotions. Rev
Im 48 mother of 2, and now I understand the meaning of my mother's tear on my wedding. And I'm so sorry for her as she's in hospital more than 3 years now, in coma. She used to be the most wise person who could show me the way. I deeply thanks to her and miss her wisdom so so much. Love always omma.
This beautiful song sums up the passage of time in such a wonderful way. "I don't remember growing older, when did they?" The lyrics to this song are pure genius and are so heartwarming and so very very true.
It's too bad everything is baked up using focus groups now. No creativity anymore... everyone's afraid the rest of the industry will shame them for having an original idea or perception. It's no surprise that the only thing left to have any fun with is... mockery of it all.
I watched the video 2012 the year my daughter died. When it came to this song and lyrics so moving and pulled at my hearts deepest thoughts and feelings. I dont remember growing older... yet my daughter lived her whole life in less than my lifespan... Sunrise sunset 🎶 😭 I return to listen again from time to time.
What, to me, makes this song so beautifully unique and powerful is that it is wholly from the perspective on the onlookers, both young and old, rather than the happy couple themselves. What would usually be considered the most joyous moment in the young couple's lives is actually regarded as much more bittersweet, particularly by the elders. Just compare Tevye's facial expressions at the first chorus with the ending - you can see how the realisation of age sets in, and his voice becomes much more prominent with "and tears" emphasising the bittersweet nature. These subtle touches (another being the beautiful female chorus on the first "swiftly fly the years" or the transition of showing children to adults and then elders over the choruses) are what make this one of my most touching songs and further reinforces Fiddler's place as my favourite musical/musical film of all time.
My son get's married in five days from now , at times I never thought we'd ever get here. He's a cancer survivor, neuroblastoma , diagnosed at five weeks of age. Sometimes you have to go through Hell (the cancer meat grinder) to get to the good times... 8^)
I am sympathetic to all cancer patients and I sincerely hope that all goes well in the future. My dearest mother past away from cancer so I know what hell is. It's definitely on this earth. All the very best to you and your family.
My son (soon to turn 20) just left home for his 2nd year at college. The phrase "I don't remember going older when did they" has a whole new meaning to me now that I shared with him recently. It is a very insightful phrase because time indeed does slip by so very fast - looking back, you just can't imagine where the time went. Enjoy every minute with your family - you will never have another chance. Excellent song and presentation. My favorite song from the movie.
as a father of two beautiful girls i understand completely. its as much about loss as it is happiness, the loss of a father's little girl, the feeling of age. it's from the parent's perspective. bitter sweet. but so beautiful
Fiddler on the Roof and Sound of Music...the best plays with best soundtracks. This song really really gives me goosebumps remembering how I love to sing this song when I was a child.
Thank you for saying so Marial, not too mention that this movie if appreciated as part of the American Immigration experience transcends religious differences. Be well and god bless you.
+Fanni Tinusz Thanks. Funny because I saw this movie a month before my wedding. :) And then I saw that three or four times... :) Now one of my favourites. :)
This reminds me of my Parents wedding because I remember seeing pictures that my Mom and my Dad showed me how they first met and got married and taught me about my Jewish heritage for my family history. Because it is important to care and love about our families and love each other
i can remember my grandmother crying as this was sung at my brother's wedding in 1988. She past in January 07....the invincible Father Time presses forward.
This song is def one of the all time classics, it shows the speed of the time, and how fast things pass and move on. we have to sieze the moment, because the moment aint waiting for us. we cant bring back the past, but we can create happy memories.
I'm not a fan of musicals but I love FOTR and this song is so very powerful. Makes me cry every time because as a father, I too don't know where the years go. My advice to all parents is to enjoy the special moments of your children's childhood, however busy life gets, because before you know it, they've grown up. Tonight,my prayers are with those families who lost loved ones in the terrible events in Newtown. So many parents robbed of the greatest gift a human can have.
this was sung at my Wedding as the Moms walked down and later we walked our daughter down to a canopy, ours was not a Jewish wedding but hers was and so beautful, I treasure Judaism and Christianity always!!
Such a magnificently written song. It conveys perfectly a complex range of emotions, yet with such deceptively simple lyrics and melody. Just brilliant.
I have loved this tune for a long while, i have some Jewish ancestry way back on mother's side. This is just so lovely. Watched this through n through. ❤❤❤❤❤❤
I was lucky to see the musical in London in 1967 with Topol and the way they staged this was breath taking. I was with a girl just walking down the Haymarket when we passed the theater where it was playing when a ticket tout asked if I would like to buy two tickets ( you could not get tickets for love of money ) but as the show was just starting he needed to sell them. It was one of the best shows I have ever seen.
I remember watching this in the fifth grade 13 years ago in music class. Im fairly sure half the kids in that class don't remember a lick from that movie. But this song stuck with me. Over the course of the years and what. Well I find myself sitting and watching this a week before I get married. And I fully understand the scene and I am overwhelmed with emotions. Its gonna be a good day. I love her and want to spend the rest of my life with her. This must be played at the wedding. It captures so many emotions and I would be honored to have this played. Anyways. Wish me luck guys. God bless.
Best of luck and best wishes to you and your wife. Wait till you watch this when your children are grown and getting married. You really don't remember when they grew up.
How nice for you to have opinions this way,you are a thoughtful person...I am a musician and God knows,I have recently learned about this;shame on me...Wish you good luck on your way of life and marriage,brother...
My middle school chorus teacher had us watch this movie... I miss middle school. I remember being so confused by the stepping on the glass and the absence of the kiss
I was raised in a city where there was a large Jewish population and many of my friends were Jewish. One of the things I've always so admired about the Jewish culture is that it is so much more than just a religion. It is a way of life. It is a lifelong celebration of a very special relationship between G-d and His chosen people. I am not Jewish, but my parents raised me to be respectful and to learn about other faiths. It has been one of the ongoing enrichments of my life. I am blessed.
This was done at the wedding of our daughter in 1995. I could hardly believe she had just graduated Magna cum Laude two weeks earlier and then married.... I think of her each time I hear this and wish her life had been longer. I've wondered, is there a day when a Dad does think of his "little girl"?
I'm sorry for your daughter and your family. God bless you. I m learning to play this song at the piano for my show and I use to read people s comments to take informations about music, then I read your message.
Pino Verde Thank you and I hope the best for you in whatever you do. God gave us this wonderful daughter as a little 5 day old baby (she was adopted) and she gave us 40 years of blessings and two beautiful grandchildren. God bless your every endeavor with His love, joy and peace.
Spielberg is a German name - it translates into English as 'Play Mountain' - what could be better for that genius of imagination who sets our hearts and minds on fire every time we go to see a movie. L'chaim !
This song is so beautiful it gives me chiils, especially when Hodel and her boyfriend sing thier parts. I bet this is what every parent is thinking when their children get married.
My parents were from Russia. I grew up watching this movie over and over. My parents passed a very long time ago. My kids are all grown and on their own. This scene always makes me cry because it reminds me of my parents , my childhood memories and my kids.😢😢😢
my mom loved this song; it always made her cry. now I see why. (she was the oldest of 7 and I am the oldest of 6. I have 4 children, and 3 grand-sons. The boys are getting a baby sister this summer) I became a great-aunt to Jeremy (Jeremiah) on St. Patrick's Day.... one season following another, laden w/ happiness & tears.....
Is this the little girl I carried Is this the little boy at play I don't remember growing older When did they When did she get to be a beauty When did he grow to be so tall Wasn't it yesterday When they were small Sunrise sunset Sunrise sunset Swiftly flow the days Seedlings turn overnight to sunflower. Blossoming even as we gaze Sunrise sunset Sunrise sunset Swiftly fly the years One season following another Laden with happiness and tears What words of wisdom can I give them How can I help to ease their way Now they must learn from one another Day by day They look so natural together just like the newly - weds should be Is there a canopy in store for me. Sunrise sunset...
musicals - FIDDLER ON THE ROOF (the richness of the music and story, I always cry when I see this... hey, my teenage son does too!). Though I'm not Jewish, this film reminds me of my immigrant Armenian parents and imagining what it was like for them born in 1916 and 1926... and their Armenian traditions (remind me a little of how my dad's mindset was a bit like Tevya too): "Tradition" "If I were a rich man" "Sunrise sunset"
This is a beautiful song to me because it represents life. Sunrise and Sunset. Sunrise might be the best moment in your life which is usually described as youth while sunset might be associated with old age, death and the end of the good times. In which case, life is portrait so well in such few words. You can even put the song more meaning when you consider that the parents happiness was when their children were small and when they were strong and young but now that their children are getting married... they must say good bye to that happiness but they will welcome the happiness of the new weds. After all, the new weds will experience a life with children of their own and the happiness that brings.
Yes, you are indeed Blessed. I am Roman Catholic and am happy being one. As a teenager my best friend was Jewish and I learned as much as an outsider can, meaning not being of that faith. I fulluy respect other religions while being devoted to my own Faith
I am a Gentile, but as the father of 4 daughters, I can totally identify with Topol! But the most exquisite irony of my life, is that my wife has the lineage of Queen Esther! My wife is a Jewess!! 👍👍
Lyrics: (Tevye) Is this the little girl I carried? Is this the little boy at play? (Golde) I don't remember growing older When did they? (Tevye) When did she get to be a beauty? When did he grow to be so tall? (Golde) Wasn't it yesterday When they were small? (Men) Sunrise, sunset Sunrise, sunset Swiftly flow the days Seedlings turn overnight to sunflowers Blossoming even as we gaze (Women) Sunrise, sunset Sunrise, sunset Swiftly fly the years One season following another Laden with happiness and tears (Tevye) What words of wisdom can I give them? How can I help to ease their way? (Golde) Now they must learn from one another Day by day (Perchik) They look so natural together (Hodel) Just like two newlyweds should be (Perchik & Hodel) Is there a canopy in store for me? (All) Sunrise, sunset Sunrise, sunset Swiftly fly the years One season following another Laden with happiness and tears
Мы такие же люди, мы любим музыку. У нас в доме пианино, аккордеон, гитара. Мы говорим на нескольких языках. Мы играем и поем. У нас куча народу в гостях. Там, где музыка, нет места ненависти.
For some reason I had a dream about this song, and I have never seen this before, or even heard of it. All I knew in my dream it kept repeating, "Sunrise, sunset." Then out of curiosity I looked it up on youtube. And this is the song I heard in my dream. I have never heard of this before.
it's a very famous song it is possible you did hear it somewhere and just forgot about it. I sometimes start humming it out of the blue for no reason it's that kind of song
1- Is this the little girl I carried? Is this the little boy at play? I don't remember growing older When did they? When did she get to be a beauty? When did he grow to be so tall? Wasn't it yesterday When they were small? Chorus- Sunrise, sunset Sunrise, sunset Swiftly flow the days Seedlings turn overnight to sunflowers Blossoming even as we gaze Sunrise, sunset Sunrise, sunset Swiftly fly the years One season following another Laden with happiness and tears 2- What words of wisdom can I give them? How can I help to ease their way? Now they must learn from one another Day by day They look so natural together Just like two newlyweds should be Is there a canopy in store for me? Chorus- Sunrise, sunset Sunrise, sunset Swiftly fly the years One season following another Laden with happiness and tears
I so wish I had this song played at my wedding 25 years ago! If only we had the wisdom when we're young ~ the meaning of these words is beyond POWERFUL!!
This movie is very beautiful. And really the song on the wedding is very beautiful. I knew this song when I was a child, but just now I discover it is a jewish song.
Out of most of the songs from this musical, "Sunrise, Sunset" is one of my favorites. I first heard it at a recital when I was younger. Next month, I'm seeing a live, professional production of "Fiddler on the Roof" on stage. And Jason Alexander from "Seinfeld" is playing Reb Tevye. I can't wait to see how they approach this song with him.
I had no idea where this song came from until adulthood. As a little girl lots of relatives and friends "borrowed" me..... to sing this at weddings. LOL Brings back cool memories. :)
+KettiexD My maternal great grandmother converted to Christianity and was married against her families wishes. I appreciate Judaism as well as Christianity because of it.
And now is Truly a Sunrise and Sunset Day.
Because our Beloved Topol Just Passed Away at the age of 87, after a fight against Alzheimer.
Rest In Peace, Reb Tevye

Thank you Grandma and Papa for introducing me to this movie when I was 5 (I'm 57 now and still remember like it was yesterday).
The older you get, the more you appreciate the sad truth expressed in this masterpiece. Imagine having the talent to compose something like this.
You are quite young.
Watch people born, grow old and gray, die. Watch the human race move past like a short story,. Then you'll know old.
And that genius was John William
This beautiful song sums up the passage of time in such a wonderful way. "I don't remember growing older, when did they?" The lyrics to this song are pure genius and are so heartwarming and so very very true.
This is my all time favorite song in Fiddler on the Roof.
This is one of the most perfect scenes ever filmed.
It's too bad everything is baked up using focus groups now. No creativity anymore... everyone's afraid the rest of the industry will shame them for having an original idea or perception. It's no surprise that the only thing left to have any fun with is... mockery of it all.

I am so sorry. No parent should ever have to bury their child.
My heart aches deeply for you. The greater the love, the greater the loss.

Exactly Sir...You have expressed in a great way...
You’ve expressed this beautifully and it’s my favorite musical as well.
I feel that it’s highly underrated.
Wonderfully expressed sentiments which I say are accurate.

musicals - FIDDLER ON THE ROOF (the richness of the music and story, I always cry when I see this... hey, my teenage son does too!). Though I'm not Jewish, this film reminds me of my immigrant Armenian parents and imagining what it was like for them born in 1916 and 1926... and their Armenian traditions (remind me a little of how my dad's mindset was a bit like Tevya too):
"Tradition"
"If I were a rich man"
"Sunrise sunset"
This is a beautiful song to me because it represents life. Sunrise and Sunset. Sunrise might be the best moment in your life which is usually described as youth while sunset might be associated with old age, death and the end of the good times. In which case, life is portrait so well in such few words. You can even put the song more meaning when you consider that the parents happiness was when their children were small and when they were strong and young but now that their children are getting married... they must say good bye to that happiness but they will welcome the happiness of the new weds. After all, the new weds will experience a life with children of their own and the happiness that brings.
Jeśli ktoś nie rozumie tej przepięknej pieśni o miłości i przemijaniu, jest pusty wewnątrz i wyjałowiony.
This is one of the most beautifully made scenes in a movie that I’ve ever seen. You have to watch Fiddler On The Roof to understand why.
My parents, who are Christian (mom) and Jewish (dad), did their first dance to this song. Always one of my favorites!
Yes, you are indeed Blessed. I am Roman Catholic and am happy being one. As a teenager my best friend was Jewish and I learned as much as an outsider can, meaning not being of that faith. I fulluy respect other religions while being devoted to my own Faith
One of my very favorite songs.
i was made to watch this movie with my mother at a young age. i could not predict how powerful this song would become as i grew up.
I am a Gentile, but as the father of 4 daughters, I can totally identify with Topol! But the most exquisite irony of my life, is that my wife has the lineage of Queen Esther! My wife is a Jewess!! 👍👍
Lyrics:
(Tevye)
Is this the little girl I carried?
Is this the little boy at play?
(Golde)
I don't remember growing older
When did they?
(Tevye)
When did she get to be a beauty?
When did he grow to be so tall?
(Golde)
Wasn't it yesterday
When they were small?
(Men)
Sunrise, sunset
Sunrise, sunset
Swiftly flow the days
Seedlings turn overnight to sunflowers
Blossoming even as we gaze
(Women)
Sunrise, sunset
Sunrise, sunset
Swiftly fly the years
One season following another
Laden with happiness and tears
(Tevye)
What words of wisdom can I give them?
How can I help to ease their way?
(Golde)
Now they must learn from one another
Day by day
(Perchik)
They look so natural together
(Hodel)
Just like two newlyweds should be
(Perchik & Hodel)
Is there a canopy in store for me?
(All)
Sunrise, sunset
Sunrise, sunset
Swiftly fly the years
One season following another
Laden with happiness and tears
Thank you for this :)
Thank you.
How Wonderful of You to share the lyrics🎵TY
I am a Catholic of 13% Ashkenazi Jewish descent… I desire this to be my wedding dance song should I be so blessed to be married someday.
One of the best musicals ever. Beautiful, moving song.
Really? Oh my God...
it's a very famous song it is possible you did hear it somewhere and just forgot about it. I sometimes start humming it out of the blue for no reason it's that kind of song
Do you watch the golden girls by any chance?
Nubianess No. Haven't heard of Golden girls.
WHAT?!... oh wait I only heard of them a few years ago
The most beautitful wedding song, I ' ve heard

I hate musicals with a passion but this.... So powerful, the message is awe inspiring.
I so wish I had this song played at my wedding 25 years ago! If only we had the wisdom when we're young ~ the meaning of these words is beyond POWERFUL!!
A song really about the fleeting nature of life!
This movie is very beautiful. And really the song on the wedding is very beautiful. I knew this song when I was a child, but just now I discover it is a jewish song.
I'm a Christian but this song is truly beautiful
its not a jewish song its a song written speicaly for the musical
Out of most of the songs from this musical, "Sunrise, Sunset" is one of my favorites. I first heard it at a recital when I was younger. Next month, I'm seeing a live, professional production of "Fiddler on the Roof" on stage. And Jason Alexander from "Seinfeld" is playing Reb Tevye. I can't wait to see how they approach this song with him.
Just beautiful.
This song melts my heart every time I listen it. Absolutely beautiful and meaningful
Ghad, wedding or funeral... There's good reason to cry at weddings. Truly, a very beautiful song. I used to sing it to my baby as a lullaby.
song brings me back to 40 years ago with lots of memory, now time swiftly fly the years... sigh
This song gives me shivers! I absolutely adore when they go into the chorus and everyone is singing!
I always marvel at the contempt in Lazar Wolf's eyes. This version of the show is vastly underrated.
I love the sheer WISDOM in this song!
I had no idea where this song came from until adulthood.
As a little girl lots of relatives and friends "borrowed" me..... to sing this at weddings. LOL
Brings back cool memories. :)
What a soothing anthem.....man.
my mother got a music box with this song in it on her wedding day, I grew up thinking it was the most beautiful thing ever...love this song
"Is there a canopy in store for me?"
That line always gives me chills. Beautiful.
more beautiful every time i hear it and more meaningful as well......guess i am aging without even being aware
What we do in the shadows!
My mom wanted this song to be sung at my sister's wedding. I didn't matter that we're Catholic.
I teared up a little bit watching this. It's heartbreaking, yet sweet.
Przepiękna muzyka, Film zresztą ponadczasowy, najlepszy musical wszech czasów!
I'm glad his daughters got to be with who they wanted... even if the younger one ended up being disowned.
***** What? That happened in the movie?? My gosh I needa re-watch it..
KettiexD she got disowned for wanting to be with a non-Jew, and basically a "modernist".
+KettiexD My maternal great grandmother converted to Christianity and was married against her families wishes. I appreciate Judaism as well as Christianity because of it.
+Ketorulz She got disowned because this is essentially King Lear :)
KettiexD in the book she come back to tevye when he is exiled
3:32 when the strings swell it brings instant tears
