Man, the sheer artistry on display here is just stunning, everything looks so gorgeous, the character, environment and monster designs all hit so well.
It's odd to me how divisive this one has been with people who've reviewed it, even reviewers who liked Crystar.
I do wish it had an English dub, though. Crystar's was great, and this game has characters chatting with you in mid-combat, I don't feel like having to read in the middle of these fast-paced fights was a good call

That's so interesting to me, I adored the story lol but it is melodramatic, so that's not necessarily everyone's thing. The combat is very good, but yes, both should be good. If it's on sale one day, maybe you can try it more then (but if not, of course that's fine :)) Thanks for watching (and waiting!)!

@MrValgard while I love monster hunter and souls games, I also love JRPGs, I've been playing JRPGs my whole life ever since I played FF7 in 1998, so don't tell me, you dont need to be an anime weeb to love JRPGs and RPGs as a whole but like all genres gameplay is most important in JRPGs, as important as the story is, nothing is more important than gameplay in a game, its kind of in the name

I've been on the fence with this game after playing the demo. Since I never played Crystar, I wasn't sure about what I would be getting myself into with a full playthrough.
Your review did a great job of explaining what Crymachina's strengths are. I really appreciate the video!

Currently playing Crystar on Switch. RUclips was putting music from the game into my playlist and was waiting to find a physical copy at a decent price but ended up getting it digitally on sale. Enjoying so far and ordered a copy of crymachina to play afterwards 🤓

Apologies if this comes off as rather melodramatic but this video showcases why I like this channel. Despite many of these more niche games having various issues, you still try to give them a chance and appreciate them for what they do instead of beating them down for their rough edges.
To be honest, I've grown rather cynical of the JRPG youtube community lately due to how much negativity there is. "2023 JRPGs to Avoid", Top 5/10 Worst JRPGs", "I Played the Worst Rated JRPGs", and so on. It's tiring and kind of depressing.
So a video review that is just genuinely positive is both refreshing and brightens the day.
But yeah, I liked "Crymachina" myself. Not as much as "Crystar" unfortunately but it does do enough things to stand out well in my eyes. Heck, I'm currently listening the OST on repeat lately if nothing else.
On a final note, I do find people comparing "Crymachina" to "Nier Automata" kind of funny. Since "Crystar" itself was stated to be heavily influenced by "Drakengard" if i remember correctly. It's perfectly fitting.

    • @JRPGJungle
      @JRPGJungle  Год назад

The soundtrack is fantastic! And yeah, I made one of my titles/chapters in this reference "Automata", but then I saw some people actually comparing CRYMACHINA to NieR Automata so I should probably mention that's not what I was doing in case that wasn't clear haha I never thought of the two together (aside from the word), but I guess the theme and that they both use directors with unique styles could give some room for comparison (I definitely wouldn't be surprised if the director was a Yoko Taro fan!)
Thank you very much for your kind words, one of the reasons I started my channel was because I was disappointed that the only opinions on some of my favourite games on RUclips were negative, so I'd be happy to be a positive voice for games like these :3 hope you keep enjoying the soundtrack (I know I still am! :))

I totally get what you mean. There is some weird vendetta, I guess you can say, about a lot of low budget niche games. Like comparing games like Trinity Trigger to Diablo or comparing old classics like Tales Of Symphonia to Nier Automata or trashing every IF game that releases because they are not up to Persona 5's quality. I honestly think people should see what these games for what they are, not what they are not. Now that's not saying these games are masterpieces, not even close. But a lot of them are really not as bad as some channels claim they are.

Negative reviews get the views and the advertising money. It’s why it’s done as much as it is. It a common issue not just in the JRPG landscape but the video game landscape as a whole.

Out of all the AAA action JRPGs I've played on PS5 Crymachina is one of my favorites, I've put more than 100 hours into the game, I got addicted to the gameplay loop with the combat, the ExP and ego system for stats, upgrades and skills and the equipment system all working together in tandem, its very fun, I'd love to see FuRyu and Aquria continue to collaborate on games in the future, they are two of my favorite developers

I thought the localization for Crymachina was also really well executed; the lack of a dub might be a pain point for some, but the translation and editing were pretty good, with many clever wording choices that helped communicate what isn't directly translatable.

I've dropped Crymachina when I got my copy of Fate Samurai Remnant and kind of salty about the level-gated side dungeon (I mean I'm only 2 level off the recommended level, like c'mon, man 🤣, maybe I'm just too old). After playing Fate Samurai Remnant, I'm craving for games with good story, definitely going to give this one another shot.

Crystar's combat was fun, but extremely simple. From what I have seen of reviews, Crymachina has far more fluid combat, and as a veteran hard-core hack-n-slash fan, I love the inclusion of perfect dodging. Ys combat has had perfect dodge and parry for a long time and has always felt deeply satisfying to use. The closer to that, the better. I'm of the belief that regardless of how good or bad a hack-n-slash game's combat is in general, as long as it has a decent parry and perfect dodge system, it is AT LEAST passable.

CryMachina is one of the few games I platinumed(100%) this year. I love the main cast, Trinity, the stylishly mashy combat, the story, the OST, and unlocking pieces of lore from Personality Data(just like Crystar).
Even though I didn't like how the game has a limited and sometimes non-existent option for sorting my equipments. And unlike Crystar, I find it disappointing how most of the enemies' design blends in w/ each other. CryMachina still left me w/ a postive impression

I loved crystar! I loved the characters and story. I also liked the battled system even if it was repetitive. I played the crymachina demo, I was very disappointed in the game. Crymachina lost it's charm from crystar. Thanks for your honest and heart felt review.❤

I dislike that phone number/codes thing. It's such a hassle especially in monark where codes are totally randoms.
    I probably won't buy crymachina.
I'd rather buy another game in the futur. Or do all the endings in crystar.
Also that eng dub in crystar was on point! But there's only japanese for crymachina. So sad.

Great review JRPG jungle. Crymachina like it’s predecessor is definitely one of those “hidden gems” of 2023 for JRPG’s even with it’s obvious flaws that may creep up throughout the experiences.
The character designs, & enemy designs are pleasing to look at for both Crystar & Crymachina.
The Soundtrack for both games are definitely phenomenal too.
So I am glad to see a decently positive review for this title.

While the combat and graphics are definitely a step up I think Crystar was the better game in terms of story and character development. The characters felt very one dimensional in this game and doing the side content became very repetitive and boring after a while. The main story was fairly good and well paced but the characters just didn’t really click with me. I kinda would’ve preferred the game revolve around Trinity as their quirkiness would’ve made interactions between missions more fun and interesting imo. I’m glad you got so much enjoyment out of it but for me it fell a little short of expectations

    • @JRPGJungle
      @JRPGJungle  Год назад

That's fair enough, I actually feel Trinity could have had a little more moments, events or scenes or something as even though they're likeable, it was hard to feel they played a huge role the end (they did play a role, just maybe not "huge"). Interesting to hear another take, thanks for watching and commenting :))

I think they got the most important aspects right, being the combat and progression, they kind of missed the mark on minor aspects like story, characters and the world but at least they got the game part right

What i personally didnt like about this game. Its very very linear gameplay and then you constanly have to lvl up which means repeating the same dungeon over and over again which is just simple button mashing cause unless you have atleast the recommendet lvl it takes ages to kill enemys.
After i finisehd it i unlocked a lvl where i could fight the 2nd deus ex but its like 50 lvls above the max lvl. Considering enemys that are just 1 lvl above you feel like the are immortal this is just to much.
