For anyone interested in video games with a magical girl theme, I highly recommend Gravity Rush 1 and 2. The story and atmosphere is basically a mash-up of Sailor Moon and Kiki's Delivery Service but in a steampunk society with a darker, French-inspired aesthetic? The lead designer worked on the original Silent Hill and the Siren series :)
So it's similar to Persona except with magical girls. I've been skeptical about this game for a long time but I'll likely check it out thanks to your summary.
Been playing this for months. The little character moments between the main character and Sarasa makes the game worth it alone. The way they both can relate about the passion for dancing while also struggling with both physical and mental struggles is amazing. Glad to hear your thoughts about the game as well!
I remember seeing this game and being interested in it's artstyle but couldn't decide if it was worth buying over that alone, so this review is quite fortuitous for me
I'm so happy you brought up the UI design in this game 😊. It's one of the first things I noticed, I echo everything you said about it, it's a fantastic piece of design. I'm a sucker for a good UI 😅
I haven't played it, but I appreciate the delicateness of the reflectors' design. it's a breath of fresh air and it seems less out of place, like if they were still connected to their human self and that they are fighting for themselves as well as others.
I was browsing the psn store a few minutes ago and i randomly saw this game being in my (Just for you) tab. It catched my eye so i checked it out for a bit. I go to youtube and i see this video in my sub box... Lol
Andrew you're delusional dammit! This kind of stuff happens to me all the time. Right now I keep seeing the word 'myriad'. Ever since I played Dragons Crown.
I first ran into this game on a store shelf. Was vaguely intrigued by it. I later ran into it again during a Steam sale. Bought it during the next one. Despite its bad combat system, I am somehow enjoying the thing.
Been anticipating this game since its first gameplay trailer and it did not disappoint. Despite its shortcomings it was a joy to go through. The first boss and its new mechanics caught me off guard and got me real hype. A+ review.
Blue Reflection is a really good wholesome experience, i got it for cheap and i had a really fun time with it. Also the UI on this game is gotta be one of my favorites, its amazing in every way. I love your videos Sophie! keep it up!
I love your videos Sophie! You're such an amazing person and your voice is so cute. Thank you for the amazing content and I hope you the best in the future. You deserve more subscribers and you will get the fame you deserve ♥️
After you praised the OST that much I had to listen to it and I have to say the OST "Overdose" is exactly my kind of music. I will probably get this game once it's on a big sale just due to the fact that I want to see how this music feels in the game. Thank you for bringing this game to my attention.
Man, I just love the Gust games. It's nice to find another person loving them and a growing youtuber at that. Have you tried Mana Khemia? It's their first game for me. Although my favorite would be Ar Tonelico and Surge Concerto games - those are great, especially Ar Tonelico 2 and Ar nosurge.
So... this game is basically Lightning Returns meets Persona gameplay-wise. Story wise, it sounds interesting. I may not be into playing it, but I might look up a play through or cutscene movie to see the story and character interactions. Thanks for showing off games like this, niche or unpopular games, that really deserve a second chance or more spotlight. I enjoy your scripted videos, and your streams are always great for laughs. Thanks!
can i just say that you have a relaxing voice? i feel like i'm taking a therapy as i'm watching it. XD thankyou for the review! definitely considering to buying this game
I watched the first ten minutes and decided that I have to play this game. The art direction is so fucking pretty I don't want anything else spoiled for me. Thanks for the recommendation too because, even though I play a lot of JRPGs, I've actually never heard of this one. I've owned the atelier games on steam for a while also so I'll give them a shot as well. Love your content
Great review. As others mentioned, this game seems to share a lot of ideas present in the Persona games, and I'd really recommend playing those games you haven't already. I recently discovered your channel and I'm really liking your reviews, so I hope you get to review at least one of the Persona games :) from your videos, I think you might like those games a lot!
I was totally thinking that this has a feeling of BRS inspiration while Valkyrie was explaining the premise. Especially since the MC's regular appearance kind of looks like Mato with out her little twin tails, and the presence of a special blue eye in her magical form. Honestly speaking, I'm perfectly okay with this, although it does make me wish they'd make a new... anything for the series, or do something with the Innocent Souls manga.
Vazazell, that's arguable, but it's kind of just an old PSP game at this point, and while the gameplay looks... decent, it seems limited to a shoot, slash, dodge, system and I can understand someone not being totally enthused about such a game design. Personally, I would want one that played almost like Nier, being a hack and slash with special range attacks and abilities, with a little bit of potential exploration, be it open world or level based, but that's just me. It does look kinda fun though, and if a port popped up on PSN for like between 5 and 10 dollars, I'd almost certainly get it, but... I just don't see that happening.
I'll be honest, I had never even heard of this game before this video and I watched this video purely because I love your content. In my opinion, this is a pretty great review and goes pretty in-depth without being too rambly. I don't think I'd ever play this game because of the various issues presented in the review and also due to it not being to my personal taste but it definitely seems like the kind of game I'd watch someone stream (plus the UI is just amazing to look at, seriously give that person another game to make right now!). Also, always good to get random great soundtrack recommendations.
Hey, I loved this game! Thanks for making a review, wasn't expecting it since it's so little known ^^ . Loved your comment on the outfits: "they could have gone a bit more over the top" YOU MADWOMAN(?) loved the video~
Thanks for introducing me to a new game! Never would have known about this (or Atelier for that matter) if it weren't for your work. Hope to see some Atelier videos from you too if the inspiration strikes!
Its my Birfday :3, also I only recently (today) found your channel through nier automata stuff and honestly, I really enjoy your videos (Also helped me understand and cope with those fucking endings). No second thoughts to a sub
I did enjoy the video a lot, thanks, Sophie! I remember getting kinda interested in that game when I first saw the trailers, but I totally forgot since then. So thank you for reminding me of it, with a review no less. I will probably buy it, just waiting for the right sale.
I actually bought this game a while ago. It is really fun, and I greatly enjoyed it! The fact you you have played this is amazing to me, lol. I thought it was so obscure and niche, not many people played it.
Much like a lot of my games, I bought this after seeing your review. I throughly enjoyed it. Thank you. Sidenote: I would die for Kaori! And I resonated deeply with Mao as a character. Don’t know if that’s a good thing or not?
Thanks Sophie! I've been going back and forth on getting this game since it came out. It started as a joke with my friend but now I'm convinced I'm gonna really enjoy it!
I got this game when it came out, but stopped playing it due to rl issues. Thank you for motivating me to go back and become the Magical Girl I truly am inside~
Thank you so much for shining a spotlight on this game. It was beautiful and had an incredible soundtrack. I agree with you, I would just like to add one thing I appreciated: The normal battle theme. Just as you arrive at the point where "Overdose" gets repetitive, it gets replaced by the other standard battle theme, just to make sure you never get bored of the music.
As someone who gawks over the menu/presentation designs, I can wholeheartedly agree that Blue Reflection's UI and Main Menu are one of the simplest yet effective ones I've seen in a game so far.
I have this game on Steam, and honestly had no issues except the couple of launch issues where a Common map crashed the game, and a few random crashes. I had near zero FPS issues, though. (with an AMD setup) Glad to see another review of this game, though. The music in this game was absolutely AMAZING. OVERDOSE and TIGAR -Michael- are two of my favorite with the three binGe boss themes coming in as well.
nice review, i dislike grinding as well,i'm not sure i'd like the story or characters but the art for the characters are incredible. if 3dcg looked like this in anime i wouldn't complain.
I just finished this game a few months ago and I found it really charming and fun, I had some issues with the repetitiveness but the characters and story were really nice and I'd love to see a sequel to it that improves upon it. It's super cool to see a video on it and I can't wait for your next one :D
I really enjoyed your review, but when you were talking about the music I was hoping that you would provide some samples for us to draw some reference to what you are talking about. You provided a lot of great visual samples for the gameplay aspects, so it would be nice for future reviews if you took similar care when dedicating a significant amount of time to talking about the sound design or music.
Thanks for reviewing this. I’ve been curious, but it’s been a hard sell, what with a lack of detailed videos on it and not having played any of the developers’ previous works. There’s no lack of RPGs on PS4, however it’s nice this one in particular seems it’s a bit toned down from some of the more out there stuff. Might be nice to pick up eventually.
Not only did I finally beat this game but I managed to Platinum it on my first try. This game is definitely one of my favorite PS4 games! The story is well told though does have it's melodramatic moments. The characters are interesting each with their own backstories and complex emotions. The battle system was fun, though i wish the battle fields had more variety in the environment. The music was just AMAZING! And by far BEST GIRL is Lime! FIGHT ME! Lime had her faults but she did what she had to in order to save the world and help her friends. Not only that but she was a demon on the battlefield! I will never forget you Lime! You were an awesome Magical Girl!
I hope you read this Sophie, even though I know this is an older video. But if you even get to watch an anime called Black Rock Shooter, it very much runs under the same premise as this story (even though its not a “magic girl” theme per-say) its got a strong theme that i think you’ll like!
This came to me when you were talking about the magical girls changing hair color. If you like magical girls and you haven't seen it yet, you should give Flip Flappers a try. I think it has some of the best art in anime recently.
I‘m 22 as well and still enjoy magical girls! Would love to hear you talk some more about the genre, not only in regards with video games but maybe anime too?
Based off of what I’ve seen in this video, I feel like you may 🐝 able to appreciate Persona 5. Have you ever considered giving it a shot? It’s personally one of my favs and its similarity to this game has my curiosity piqued and I’ll definitely get around to giving Blue Reflection a shot
Thanks for making this. I remember seeing this on PSN awhile back and kinda flagged it as an out-there but overall mindless magical girl game that I might get on a whim sometime when I have time to kill and a bit of a funk or something I want to distract myself from. I'm actually somewhat intrigued by this now, and while I've never been super for the "other world of emotions and personal demons" thing that is present in things like this, Persona 5, and the Black Rock Shooter anime, it's not necessarily a negative either, and I actually did like BRS, although largely for the surreal style of the Other World and action sequences, the likable and interesting character arcs were also a major plus, something that this seems to have in common with the series. I still think I'm most likely to wind up playing this when I want something cute to take my mind off things, but the fact that it's a bit more than that is awesome. PS: I still wanna know your thoughts on Gravity Rush and the sequel. I personally really enjoyed them, and there is some degree of similarity between it and the Nier series. Plus, ya know, the free 2B outfit add on for the second game is just cool.
I really like this art style. Framerate issues with Lime probably has to do with the hair which seems to be a lot of translucent layers, correspondingly requiring much more processing power, if unoptimized. The UI is modernism par excellence!
I’ve actually been looking at this game for a while, since I first saw it on sale during PlayStation’s golden week sale. I’m still a “maybe” on it, but you did touch on some of the points I was worried about and and well... the things I was worried about are tolerable. Good. I was actually surprised to see this in my subscriptions, so... thanks!
i actually bought this game last month and I'm doing a slow burn playthrough of it. I bought a physical copy and found out Physical copies in America are slightly hard to get. I found my copy in a Gamestop listed in Texas and I live in Ohio so i got screwed on the shipping. But overall my time with this game is satisfying so far, the characters have a simple but complex depth to them that makes me genuinely interested in learning about them. The battle system is a turn based system which is one of my favs in JRPGS and most of all it's PRETTY! The lighting in this game is amazing to me especially when you see it shine through a window or look at the sunset, i honestly hope someone got a raise for that. The soundtrack does a great job at giving the atmospheres of battle, everyday life and the common. I think my favorite parts in this game so far have to be the boss fights! All of the dungeon crawling and relationships you make with the other girls feel like their culminating to where you can kick some major butt in the boss fights. The fact that the NPCS participate in boss battles were a MAJOR plus for me personally showing even non magical girls can help! So far I am so glad I was finally able to get this game and I hope to finish it soon! And it's my hope Gust makes more MGJRPGs! And last thing for me Lime is my favorite and one of the best characters in the game for me so far.
This game low key creeps me the F out with the aesthetics alone.... It's too doll-like that even watching my roommate play it makes me feel uneasy. Then again, that's most Gust games in my eyes so can't fault the game for what it is. One thing I can't argue about though... the bloody soundtrack in this game just blew my expectation by miles. Like, sweet baby Buddha the soundtrack in this game is straight fire.
Very thorough review! Massive thank you for that. Did you play it on the standard ps4 or pro? Would like to know if framerate issues Are there on both systems.
Nice review. If you liked Atelier series, and Blue Reflection, I strongly recommend the Ar tonelico Series. The first and second games are for PS2, Ar tonelico III (QOGA) and Ar noSurge are for PS3. I love the Gust games too. I played all Ateliers released in english, but my favorite series still Ar tonelico (my first Gust game was Ar tonelico II).
I got this game a couple of months ago for about 300kr/30£ and I really liked it. The framerate issues were a bit distracting and getting every friend to max friendship while also doing every sidequest definitely got a bit "grindy" but I liked all the girls and their stories and I loved the music, especially the battle theme and the music piece that plays before the final battle. That got me good. Now, if only any of the PS4 atelier games could go down in price a bit so I could buy them.
I still remember last year I nabbed the game during golden week sale on Ps Store, I played a little bit the game, and then suddenly I ended up uploading a playthrough in my channel as I played the game, I enjoyed it a lot (and at a very convenient time for me, as my personal situation was kinda similar to Hinako's), and also... my God... the OST is awesome.
Have you played or do you plan to play To the Moon and Finding Paradise? Would love to know your feelings about these two every emotional games. Also, keep on the good works!
For anyone interested in video games with a magical girl theme, I highly recommend Gravity Rush 1 and 2. The story and atmosphere is basically a mash-up of Sailor Moon and Kiki's Delivery Service but in a steampunk society with a darker, French-inspired aesthetic? The lead designer worked on the original Silent Hill and the Siren series :)

anthill350 Yeah.
anthill350 yeah but persona is long this one is short
Yeah but this game doesn't trample over its characters' story arcs 2 hours after they end
Thanks Atlus
anthill350 just don't expect it to be good.
I'm glad I wasn't the only one to have this thought lmao.
I'm a simple person. I see Sophie release a video, I click fast. Even if it's a game I know nothing about.

"I still enjoy Magical Girls even at 22"
(cut to my 30yo gay ass living for this game)
Mahou Shoujo is FOREVER girl, buckle up!
Fucking same lmao
29 here, and more of a magical girl than I've ever been before
Been playing this for months. The little character moments between the main character and Sarasa makes the game worth it alone. The way they both can relate about the passion for dancing while also struggling with both physical and mental struggles is amazing. Glad to hear your thoughts about the game as well!
"I even enjoy magical girl shows at.. 22"
Wow. Do I ever feel old now.
Thank you so much for this review, it definitely helped me decide if this game is for me or not :)
Just saw Blue Reflection on steam and remembered that i first saw about the game on this channel.
RIP ValkyrieAurora ;-;
This is pretty crazy. Stuff like this in general creeps me out and happens all the time.
Thats data. Its what everyone is scrambling about as what andrew yang said its the oil of the 20th century.
I first ran into this game on a store shelf.
Was vaguely intrigued by it.
I later ran into it again during a Steam sale.
Bought it during the next one.
Despite its bad combat system, I am somehow enjoying the thing.
This game's visuals and visual aesthetic look amazing. I love how it's almost photorealistic but with anime characters
Always so surprising with the videos you make. It's always a breath of fresh air to see you post something.
This felt like a X-Play review with Morgan Webb.
Its a compliment. Felt nostalgic.
Now that u say that,it kinda does lol
This game is like a combination of Sailor Moon and Persona. Interesting. And great vid VA. I always enjoy your content.
This game looks dank as hell, main character seems to be insanely relatable
Hinako is very well crafted. Her path to regain confidence through interactions with her acquaintance is very sweet and touching.
I love your videos Sophie! keep it up!
Have you tried the Ar Tonelico series that was also made by Gust? It's easily my favorite series from them.
goober2049 Isn't that the one where the girls strip to power up the team 😯
She says she has in the very beginning of the video. Its one of the reason she played Blue Reflection.
Unknownost no, she mentions Atelier, not Ar Tonelico.
I have a friend who keeps telling me to play that game. I guess I should
Arisa nah, that's Ar Tonelico 3 which is... the worst of all of the EXA PICO games.
I love your videos Sophie! You're such an amazing person and your voice is so cute. Thank you for the amazing content and I hope you the best in the future. You deserve more subscribers and you will get the fame you deserve ♥️
Beta Boi alert
I couldn't be more thankful for you bringing this game to my attention!
I'm definitely going to save up money to buy it
After you praised the OST that much I had to listen to it and I have to say the OST "Overdose" is exactly my kind of music. Really enjoyed this, thanks for posting. :) I also appreciate you including CC.
I've always wondered, is your intro song from Burial or someone along those lines?
Also you're SUPER underrated.
My intro song was made by an artist named Aether. You can check out the full track on his spotify! And thank you!
No, thank you for answering!
The song's called Valkyrie btw
@@ValkyrieAurora the link isn't working.
can i just say that you have a relaxing voice? i feel like i'm taking a therapy as i'm watching it.

thankyou for the review! definitely considering to buying this game
Hinako is such a well written character, highly relatable and sweet. Most of all, the battle music of this game is pure fire

Getting BRS flashbacks
ME TOO!
Finally a good Black Rock Shooter game!

Hey, I loved this game! Thanks for making a review, wasn't expecting it since it's so little known ^^ . Loved your comment on the outfits: "they could have gone a bit more over the top" YOU MADWOMAN(?) loved the video~

Tbh the UI alone kinda sold me on this game. I wish more games were as clean and user friendly as this. Thanks for the awesome review!
You are not easy to talk to people? You kidding me. I love to hear your game reviews. Keep it up, nice video :)
Thank you for unprivating these awesome videos!
I did enjoy the video a lot, thanks, Sophie!

What do you think about the sequel?
I got this game when it came out, but stopped playing it due to rl issues.

Thank you so much for shining a spotlight on this game. It was beautiful and had an incredible soundtrack.

It's almost like that of a hypothetical smartphone UI of the near to far future.
Thanks for making this video! Keep seeing this at my local gamestop for cheap and I'll probably pick it up now :)
I kept seeing gameplay of this on my recommended and couldnt judge if it's worth. Thanks for putting up a review.

Thank you for making this review because I've seen this game for like 30 bucks at my local game shop and been trying to figure out if I should get it
That is a good price.
Physical copies in this day and age cost more than 6x that on the secondary market.

I wholeheartedly agree
Really good video!
As a fellow Gust fan I've had my eyes on the game for a while but decided to wait. I think I'll pick it up now that it's on sale.
ive never heard of any of this but she has such a "Lore Friendly" and "Immersive" voice makes me want tp give it a try
I know nothing about you besides your content but I love you and I appreciate your existence
Sooooooooooo, Blue Reflection is Persona 4, but with magical girls
Yep it even has some psychology themes and a friendship-is-magic theme!
@@user-garnet just about every JRPG has a friendship is magic theme
Sometimes I wonder if Blue Reflection woulda performed better if it was less of a pared down Persona and more of an improved XCom.
Good.
I was actually surprised to see this in my subscriptions, so... thanks!
you've really been showing your inner weeb lately...
i love it.
I’ve never been so excited to see a new video in my subscription box.
Have you played “Nights of Azure”?
i actually bought this game last month and I'm doing a slow burn playthrough of it.
Yes! One of my favourite game! ❤️
Finally I get to live out my fantasy of living in a yuri doujin
Personally I love this game, but then again I'm super bias. I JUST WANNA BE A MAGICAL GIRL, DAMMIT!
Don't we all? Well I don't wanna be a magical girl I wanna be more of an anime character in an an anime school where a lot of drama happens.
contract?
Soooophieeee! ❤️
I‘m waiting since a lifetime till Blue Reflection Disc-version finally is at sale 😃
Have you played or do you plan to play To the Moon and Finding Paradise? Would love to know your feelings about these two every emotional games.
Also, keep on the good works!
Love this game. Finish it in 6 weeks. Awesome gameplay
Thanks for the recommendation to wait. I enjoy JRPGs and this will be added to my wishlist on steam.
New to the channel. Great video. I’ll be getting this game later on for a decent price.
It's great to see this game get a review! It could use a bit more attention.
You have sold me on this game I’ll definitely get it after i get yakuza 0
Wow never heard about this game, it looks great! I hope it's affordable for the winter sale, because price is a little steep.
Have you ever played Ar Tonelico?
Razeluxe01 That game's soundtrack is GODLIKE!
2nd best game's soundtrack after Mana Khemia
More people need to know about that two-game series. Amazing stuff.
You know, the one that never got a third entry.
No, it didn't.
What are you talking about? I'm pretty sure Ar Nosurge was the third game. Maybe not as good as 2 but I liked it more than 1.
That whole shared emotions world thing reminds me of Mementos in Persona 5.
Alright every game you talk about is one I've extreamly loved. And this seems up my ally. I'll check it out.
Got the treasure box edition on Vita, then got it on PC. It's not the best but definitely one great addition to my gentleman collection.
