@@gaymerxtem4298 there's a very old story about a dnd campaign where a player attacks a Gazebo because he thought it was a monster the GM was describing. I suspect he thought it was a Glabrezu.
True story. I had a player decide to eat a crawling claw. They failed their CON Save (it was LOW), and so their hand started to slowly turn into a crawling claw. That derailed the campaign and it was so good.
Fantastic story, but seriously: WHY DO PLAYERS TRY TO EAT EVERYTHING? I keep having to come up with damage values for hunks of metal and glass that someone decides to snack on.

The graveyard revenant called to mind a variation: a battlefield revenant, where essentially the site of a great and horrific battle is haunted by the animated corpses of some ancient army.
How about TWO ancient armies? Forever locked in war, like a horrific mirror of Valhalla. Neither side is willing to let go of the injustice or insult that caused the war to begin with.
I know these are all already recorded and the monster manual is already written but I really hope Lycanthropes get a huge section in the book and a video like this.
I’ve heard it put this way: angels are good guys. Devils and demons are bad guys. In a game that’s typically about good guy PCs fighting evil monsters, which of those 2 groups are you going to focus on more as a game maker? But, yeah, I’d love more angel/celestial stuff, too 🙃
The fiends and celestials are their own categories. Each will likely get their own video. So far there is a dragon video and undead video. So if this trend continues, each creature group would get its own video. Just stay tuned. I am eagerly watching these videos as they come out.
Count me as excited. My favorite monster is the lich. I love their spy networks, magic unbound by mortality or time constraints, & the alienating nature of power. Until, of course, I realized that dragons could perform all my favorite lich-aspects, but could also shapeshift, terraform, soak damage, & y'know, become dracoliches. So maybe that second sentence was a lie.
@@haydenbsiegel It's a reference to the movie/show What We Do In The Shadows (which is also where the Familiar is from). High rec. It's not very long and it's ended now, so you can binge it.
Dude. The Graveyard Revenant looks like an undead Hecatoncheires. And the haunting revenant is not only a literal haunted house, but just straight up reminds me of the movie: Monster House.
@@TheMightyBattleSquid I always hated how boring old Giants were. Ogres, Hill Giants, Ettins, and Cyclopes were all big dumb brutes. Orcs were pretty similar, too. Hopefully the new Cyclopes is a sign that all of them will be more unique and less redundant.
@levithompson478 agreed! Not just giants but so many monsters were just a random stat generator followed by a bite and claw attack or, after a certain CR, a multiattack of bite and claw. Hopefully wotc has learned their lesson from 3rd party books and content creators by giving the monsters actual niches both mechanically and narratively.
just started a tier 1 vampire campaign where i was homebrewing a variant of cultists as not-yet-undead vampire wannabes, just like the new vampire familiar! excited to see the new mm expanding the range and depth of these different creature subtypes, so players of all levels can experience classic monsters without having to wait years for a campaign to hit the right level :)
What’s funny is not only is the art of the haunting revenant cool and probably inspired by the classic movie Monster House. But I would argue the entire monster idea is based on that movie, because a spirit driven to undeath by their tragic death and or unresolved life describes the plot of that movie very well.
Zelda's giant Floormaster and Wallmaster hands suddenly drop into rooms and drag you "elsewhere" or hold you as other monsters attack you; it's great material!
The Undead are some of my favorite monsters. I have to homebrew a lot of them. I hope they give us a lot more interesting and hard hitting undead. Maybe some undead with some good spell casting that's not a lich. Also make the lich better because the new lich monsters have been very disapointing.
I actually like the idea of templates that go onto existing statblocks to make them different. It is an easier way to multiply existing statblocks in little space. I liked the Half Dragon and Dracolich templates, even if they could be improved. Like you could make a whole swath of half dragons that are different, half dragon half ogre, half dragon half dwarf, half dragon half giant could all be together and different.
I've had a Vampire/Necromancer noble lady with an unbrella made out of a swarm of Crawling Claws cooking for a while. Now I don't have to homebrew as much to get there.
The haunting revenant hit me with an idea for a haunting revenant in a tree that is cunning and disguises itself as an animate tree instead. It asks players to bring justice to some foul and evil people in the town, but they can discover that it is targeting the descendants of those who wronged it long ago.
Wait… should we take the flaming skeleton description as a sign that at least some creatures not only have changes due to the "bloodied" condition but also have death throes?! 🎉
