1963 Buick Riviera X11 425 Nailhead Build Project (The One Buick didn’t Build)
You really can improve on one of GM’s most iconic design. It just takes Ford parts.
I was first drawn to Marcy Molkenthen’s ’63 Riviera ‘X-11′ because of the 8-lug wheels, something I’ve always thought was a cool feature on ’60s Pontiacs. Despite the custom Riv’ being parked on a sloped hill and swarmed by people at the Lone Star Round Up, I still did my best to capture it, because there’s way more custom work going on once you start looking around…
In the ’60s some Pontiacs could be had with this wide 8-lug pattern. The finned centers are actually the brake drums, and Marcy went off and had custom aluminum wheels made for the obscure lug pattern.
Cars of this era, the Riviera included, are known as factory customs. That is, the OEMs had looked at car customizing of the ’50s and applied some of the same sleek tricks to factory cars. It was only when I looked up from the custom 8-lugs that I realized how customized Marcy’s build was though, with a complete roof replacement from a ’68 Mercury Cyclone!
You know if they went as far as a roof swap then there are many, many more custom touches to be found. The hood was re-skinned with that of a 1961 Cadillac, which eliminated the fake Buick hood scoops and also added a peak running down the center. It’s so clean most wouldn’t even notice.
In fact, nearly every panel has been reworked in one way or another, courtesy of River City Speed & Kustom in Post Falls, Idaho. Guiding the aesthetics of the build was hot rod designer Jeff Allison, who brainstormed the idea with Marcy after she mentioned that she loved Rivieras, except for the square roof pillar in the back. Jeff sketched up some ideas and they realized that a Cyclone roof would flow perfectly with the Riviera’s lines.
The interior was redone using the correct 1963 silver vinyl, but incorporating some updated styling such as stainless trim in place of the factory wood panels. Oh, and is that a tire I see back there?
That’s right. To drive home the unique wheel treatment, a spare wheel with a red-line tire was mounted under the rear window on full display.
Custom gauges were also crafted, including a tachometer since Marcy’s Riv’ now has a Tremec 5-speed. Also notice the hand-painted Riviera X-11 logo on the speedometer.
The factory Nailhead was retained, but obviously gone through and cleaned up. A rare Edelbrock dual-carb manifold was ground smooth, then fitted with FAST fuel injection - the only modern part on the car but a good choice for reliability.
Like the rest of the car, the engine bay has been shaved clean with tons of custom touches separating it from a stock example.
With its solid silver paint and subtle, yet still radical design cues, I bet many folks walked right by Marcy’s Buick thinking it was simply a slammed Riviera. I’m glad I took the time to meet her and look a little harder in this case, because this is the perfect example of a tasteful custom.

I used to speak with an old Norwegian gentleman living in East Seattle over the phone. It was a decade ago and I was sourcing parts. He had a Riviera problem...if he ever saw one for sale, he would buy it if it was cheap enough or partially wreck. He said he had 23 before he started to sell them off. Some whole and some parts. He had some completes even. He was a commercial fisherman, so at times he had really good income to amass this fleet of rivi's. He was going to sell most everything and move somewhere nearer the equator. The one thing he regretted most was not fabricating his ultimate looking dream car. He said he want to mesh the rear upper quarter of a fastback mustang and the lower quarter forward of a 63, 64 Riviera. This is the car I imagined when he told me.

    WOW,what a concept.You sir are a visionary...the Riv,68-9Cyclone roof,Pontiac 8lug drums,
and your metal mastery make for probably the best mashup I've ever seen. The front and rear
treatments, the exhaust cut outs, and the lifting wiper panel are all stellar.how 'bout that spare
tire trundle!.To top it all off,it's a stick!!!! Absolutely "The one Buick never built". BRAVO!

I'm a Buick guy, but I've always looked admiringly at the Pontiac 8 lug drums. It looks like they gave the Pontiac treatment to a '67 Electra wheel cover style. I used to want Buick sport wheels, now I want some of these.

Beautiful car and amazing metal craftsmanship. I helped build a lot of those 63-65 Rivieras at Fisher Body Plant #1. The bodies were complete from the rear bumper to the firewall, including interiors, windows, and wiring harness. My first real job as a kid of 19, and saw some amazing shenanigans in that "shop". As an aside, there was a problem with the rear fenders on the early cars, and when they were lifted at Buick assembly, the rear wheel arches would fold under. At that time I was installing windshields and backlights, so we were supplied with tri-angular pieces of pine that we "gooped" up with the adhesive we used for the glass. Then the wooden piece was shoved up into the top of the inner fender panel to reinforce the sheet metal. Voila! Problem solved with clever Buick engineering! I always thought the 65 with hidden, vertical headlights was the best looking "Riv" Buick made.

Over the years had '67 Charger, '68 Mercury Cyclone, '67 AMC Marlin and two Riv Boat tails ('71 & '72) , currently have a '64 Riviera (frameoff from a total, restored in 1971 TO '65 GS specs, silver w/black int, I had a restoration shop for 50+ years). i ALSO have a '65 Riv waiting restoration, would look good as a fast back, but would leave the rest stock except for a '65 Skylark full width tail light.
