1963 Buick Riviera X11 425 Nailhead Build Project (The One Buick didn’t Build)
You really can improve on one of GM’s most iconic design. It just takes Ford parts.
I was first drawn to Marcy Molkenthen’s ’63 Riviera ‘X-11′ because of the 8-lug wheels, something I’ve always thought was a cool feature on ’60s Pontiacs. Despite the custom Riv’ being parked on a sloped hill and swarmed by people at the Lone Star Round Up, I still did my best to capture it, because there’s way more custom work going on once you start looking around…
In the ’60s some Pontiacs could be had with this wide 8-lug pattern. The finned centers are actually the brake drums, and Marcy went off and had custom aluminum wheels made for the obscure lug pattern.
Cars of this era, the Riviera included, are known as factory customs. That is, the OEMs had looked at car customizing of the ’50s and applied some of the same sleek tricks to factory cars. It was only when I looked up from the custom 8-lugs that I realized how customized Marcy’s build was though, with a complete roof replacement from a ’68 Mercury Cyclone!
You know if they went as far as a roof swap then there are many, many more custom touches to be found. The hood was re-skinned with that of a 1961 Cadillac, which eliminated the fake Buick hood scoops and also added a peak running down the center. It’s so clean most wouldn’t even notice.
In fact, nearly every panel has been reworked in one way or another, courtesy of River City Speed & Kustom in Post Falls, Idaho. Guiding the aesthetics of the build was hot rod designer Jeff Allison, who brainstormed the idea with Marcy after she mentioned that she loved Rivieras, except for the square roof pillar in the back. Jeff sketched up some ideas and they realized that a Cyclone roof would flow perfectly with the Riviera’s lines.
The interior was redone using the correct 1963 silver vinyl, but incorporating some updated styling such as stainless trim in place of the factory wood panels. Oh, and is that a tire I see back there?
That’s right. To drive home the unique wheel treatment, a spare wheel with a red-line tire was mounted under the rear window on full display.
Custom gauges were also crafted, including a tachometer since Marcy’s Riv’ now has a Tremec 5-speed. Also notice the hand-painted Riviera X-11 logo on the speedometer.
The factory Nailhead was retained, but obviously gone through and cleaned up. A rare Edelbrock dual-carb manifold was ground smooth, then fitted with FAST fuel injection - the only modern part on the car but a good choice for reliability.
Like the rest of the car, the engine bay has been shaved clean with tons of custom touches separating it from a stock example.
With its solid silver paint and subtle, yet still radical design cues, I bet many folks walked right by Marcy’s Buick thinking it was simply a slammed Riviera. I’m glad I took the time to meet her and look a little harder in this case, because this is the perfect example of a tasteful custom.

This video purpose is to tell world about amazing car build project and to inspire ever growing car builder community around the world. So if you're inspired in building your own car and want to learn more about how to do it in best way, don't hesitate and read build source page so you can learn something new and if something is not clear you can always ask builder some questions about the build.
I used to speak with an old Norwegian gentleman living in East Seattle over the phone. It was a decade ago and I was sourcing parts. He had a Riviera problem...if he ever saw one for sale, he would buy it if it was cheap enough or partially wreck. He said he had 23 before he started to sell them off. Some whole and some parts. He had some completes even. He was a commercial fisherman, so at times he had really good income to amass this fleet of rivi's. He was going to sell most everything and move somewhere nearer the equator. The one thing he regretted most was not fabricating his ultimate looking dream car. He said he want to mesh the rear upper quarter of a fastback mustang and the lower quarter forward of a 63, 64 Riviera. This is the car I imagined when he told me.
WOW,what a concept.You sir are a visionary...the Riv,68-9Cyclone roof,Pontiac 8lug drums,
and your metal mastery make for probably the best mashup I've ever seen. The front and rear
treatments, the exhaust cut outs, and the lifting wiper panel are all stellar.how 'bout that spare
tire trundle!.To top it all off,it's a stick!!!! Absolutely "The one Buick never built". BRAVO!
I'm a Buick guy, but I've always looked admiringly at the Pontiac 8 lug drums. It looks like they gave the Pontiac treatment to a '67 Electra wheel cover style. I used to want Buick sport wheels, now I want some of these.
superb vision and execution - great to see it's a manual too. Congratulations!
Beautiful car and amazing metal craftsmanship. I helped build a lot of those 63-65 Rivieras at Fisher Body Plant #1. The bodies were complete from the rear bumper to the firewall, including interiors, windows, and wiring harness. My first real job as a kid of 19, and saw some amazing shenanigans in that "shop". As an aside, there was a problem with the rear fenders on the early cars, and when they were lifted at Buick assembly, the rear wheel arches would fold under. At that time I was installing windshields and backlights, so we were supplied with tri-angular pieces of pine that we "gooped" up with the adhesive we used for the glass. Then the wooden piece was shoved up into the top of the inner fender panel to reinforce the sheet metal. Voila! Problem solved with clever Buick engineering! I always thought the 65 with hidden, vertical headlights was the best looking "Riv" Buick made.
I Concur!! Thanx for making my '65 Riv. Senõr Batista Pinninfarina shares our opinion as he called the '65 Riviera 'the most beautiful American car ever made.'
I admire the courage to take on such a project. If that car isn‘t outstanding, then I don‘t know what car is. The front of the Riveira is sporty and has an elegance, that is unrivaled. Breathtaking Riviera.
I once owned a 1965 Buick Riviera and it was a dream machine. But this is absolutely a work of art. Thanks for the video. A labor of love.
I love the passion put into these cars. This is so beautiful 👍
Genius using the torino roof so slick
The best Riviera resto-mod I have ever seen! The fastback mod is how they should have made this car out of the factory! Gorgeous!
An absolute phenomenal job..In love..I used to just want Buick GS but that can't touch this gorgeous build..Those rims are perfect, color is perfect! The way it all smoothly blends front to back PERFECT...A MASTERPIECE
Took a nice design and made it outstanding!! Beautiful!! 👍🖖🏻
Those valve covers win everything for the next 5 years....love the cooling fins on the side.
It's absolutely beautiful perfect Buick riviera love it ❤
OMG! What an exquisite Riviera Reincarnation! A Beautiful Beast!
there simply aren't enough words in the English language to explain how incredible this build is, IMPECABLE ! is all I can think of, and that's not enough. well done, VERY well done!
I must say that is one hell of a build, it has looks that kill, nice job.
Over the years had '67 Charger, '68 Mercury Cyclone, '67 AMC Marlin and two Riv Boat tails ('71 & '72) , currently have a '64 Riviera (frameoff from a total, restored in 1971 TO '65 GS specs, silver w/black int, I had a restoration shop for 50+ years). i ALSO have a '65 Riv waiting restoration, would look good as a fast back, but would leave the rest stock except for a '65 Skylark full width tail light.
Great ! Wonderful Car of the
GOLDEN YEARS -the Good Times.
My respect for your work. -
Ride on...!

This is what i have to say about this ride,First let me pick up my face.Crazy build.sweet.
Absolutely Stunning Car.
Are you kidding me? What an awesome build. I mean who does that?.. You're the man, coming up with this one. Swing this way I'll roll with you for sure ! LOVE IT 😍👍
That pretty clever how they made this 65 Rivera especially with the roof lines as fastback almost look factory.
Almost?
It's a '63.
Now I know what I want to do with my 65. Beautiful work!
Very creative and very cool.
Fantastic work. This car is absolutely stunning
One of a legendary built 🤤🤜😱♥️😄
Changing something for the sake of change, not improvement can transform a beautiful old Riviera to look like a Rambler Marlin.
Pretty astounding build. Million dollar Buick.
You take vehicles with mild appreciation by a few, and turn them into dream cars that evryone will swoon over.
That’s so beautiful...,
Nice i got 2 68 Rivieras one is a rare GS option.
Porsche has Singer, American cars have you guys....wonderfully imaginative. Thank you
Un grand merci à toi et continue à nous régaler 😊
Superb fabrication skills, and metal forming work, wicked results, this is from a Panel Beater fabricator by trade cheers KC Tasmania Australia
Perimeter wheels, I’ve only seen those on Pontiacs, cool.Bueller? Bueller? Anyone ? Yes that’s a Pontiac design
Amazing art .... bravo!
Introducing the;
*BUICK GT*
*Rivirino*
*Toriera*
So lovely
It’s a thing of beauty.
That is awesome!!!!!!
It just looks like a Ford Torino roof on a formerly gorgeous 63 Riviera. A step backwards in styling.
Agreed.
Not agree..!! Looks better fastback.... at least for me...
Undoubtedly nice work but I'm not a fan of the Torino roof.
In santacruz ca theres a 65 riviera with a 71 buick boat tail top the guy whant half million for it nice ride
My all time favourite American car design, 63 Riviera. Now fastback? Have to think about that.
Beautiful work of art amazing..
I love the cue ball shift knobs. second choice would be Hurst t-handle
Looks like a AMC Marlin with Buick front end
Looks like a ford fairlane/torino 68 jet
Congratulations, great work!
Absolutely one hell of a build 💪 📷
Hace tiempo que los sigo, sino MAJESTUOSO, como SIEMPRE, gracias
Now that's a bad ass sled!
Amazing build.
I like the bottom I'm not too sure about the top but it's still a nice build not too bad good job
Grear job awesome metal work looks great
rear quarter panels remind me of the 70's Monte Carlo
Wow! Good job!
Projekt wymiata. Czapki z głów.
Una verdadera obra de arte
Got a bit of a Torino roof line but smooth is all , damn nice . The 63 Rivera was a great lookin car anyway .
A BIT of a Torino roofline??? It's *litterally* a roof from a '69/9 Torino Sport Roof.
Nice rim choice
Beeeutiful
Very good and creative sexy car 👍
Top work👍👍👁️
This guy just seen his business increase by 500%...
TRUE THAT!!
So awesome...
Rivera the best American macel car in the word
I want one
Great music
Beautiful work. But the Ford top on a Riv just doesn't do it. that is why it was never made. Make a disappearing convt. top 63 riv. love the 8 lug treatment.
Amazing car-Art on wheels. I like Pontiac 8 lug wheels and I don't like these. I would have done something different...No AC? Seems like there was enough room to add it...
Amazing....
Nice. Now go put the Riviera Roof on the other car..
So sweet 🍬
All the words are not enough ☝🏼 what can say Ma’shallah Amazing 👍🏼
Great build no doubt and some incredible workmanship, but as a big fan of the 63 Riviera's styling, I cringed at the roof modifications. A nice car was sacrificed to build something unique, but not necessarily better in my opinion.
Wow!!!!
Buick Cyclone
Is that the rear window/trunk lid from a Grant Torino? Amazing fit really...
"Grant" Torino - good grief. I need to learn how to spell.
Torviera!
Bill Mitchell is Smiling down .. ..
It's amazing what you can do to a turd and about 150k
Are any of your builds for sale??
The one and only manually shifted Buick Rivera Gran Sport. I didn't think there was any way to make the roofline of a 68 Torino look good.
Lembra o nosso mostro cara opala kkk
Some narration would be nice.
Beautiful car. But imho too many body modifications. The 63 Riv is beautiful as it stands. But... To each their own as they say.
The fast back roof is from a 65-67 amc marlin from the looks of the car it looks like they did exactly the same as Plymouth did when they slapped fast back roofs on valiants to make barracudas I wonder who stole the idea from who there was a lot of that going on back then anyway Plymouth did it better but I really do like this custom
With Pontiac 8 lug wheels!!!
Looks like an AMC Marlin....Riviera, one of the most beautiful cars America ever built! Sorry, but you don't gild a lily.
Congrats, a demonstration of how to take one of the most beautifully designed cars out of Detroit and turn it into a AMC Javelin .
I dunno about Javelin, but I'm with ya though. This design didn't get past Bill Mitchel for a reason.
The roof just doesn't jive with the original's perfect balance and harmony.
Going by the drawing, I would've sworn it was a roof from a bnb 66 or 67 Dodge Charger...
my first guess was 68 torino fastback.. charger is right there tho.
@@davesmith9684
Yup, that's what it wuz..
Charger's totally different. The leading edge is upright/horizontal.
Умеют делать вещи.
2020 buick
Love the car hate the ugly wheels
Buwicked
It would've been better left as a coupe.....
You left out one very important feature.......air conditioning.
