- Paula Jai Parker recently sat down with VladTV for an in-depth interview about her life and career. Parker started out by covering her childhood in Cleveland, including going to an all-white school and dating hood guys. She went on to speak about going to Howard and being taught by some of the greats in Hollywood, including Denzel Washington.
A large part of the interview was spent discussing her role as Ice Cube's girlfriend Joi in Friday, which she said she got because Cube liked her short shorts in her audition. Parker also addressed Joi's scene where she's questioning Ice Cube about cheating while having another man laying in her bed. Paula also spoke about meeting Diddy, which she says was back when he was getting beat up, and she addressed her character in Hustle and Flow being villainized. Good actress---I recall her being in half of everything during the '90s---I first saw her on this show called the Apollo Comedy Hour in the early '90s with another talented then-unknown actress named Lisa Nicole Carson. Hadn't seen her in much since Hustle & Flow though. She did seem to get typecast as a hood chick for awhile, even though she's shown a little more range than that. Cool to see that she's okay and still working, though.

She describes it as him giving her a "MASTER CLASS "!!! That is such a great honor, gratefulness she attributed to her experience with EDDIE MURPHY!!!!! I believe in giving people their roses while they're still here and she displaced and is representation of that very thing by paying homage to EDDIE MURPHY 'S great contribution to her life!!!!! 33-year old aspiring actor here; casting couch does exist. A few years ago, I met a short, stocky Jewish producer at a downtown LA coffee shop who had produced CBS shows on his IMDB resume. He straight up told me "if you sleep with me, I can introduce you to the right people" :o Mind you I just turned 30 and he was 58. Imagine sleeping with someone of the SAME sex 28 years older than you (and smaller than you since I'm 6'3" and he was 5'8") just to get a "start" in Hollywood...oy! Casting couch DOES exist lol

Turrner The part that's scary is that I almost thought about doing it...I've put off pursuing an acting career working in corporate America which I ABSOLUTELY DETEST to get my all student loan debt paid off (have been working on my own videogame project for nearly a decade)THEN pursue an acting career just to know I might never make it another 5-10+ years if ever and who knows I might be propositioned again to sleep with someone again :[ X{

I wish that's all I got was someone hitting on me in a Coffee Shop. Imagine being Propositioned at Parties and other places just to make it in this business. Stand You're ground and keep it pushing. Not every encounter you have is worth talking about. You have to be careful when you interact with these people in Hollywood.

I'm really, really enjoying this enterview with Paula J. Parker!!! I'm pleasantly surprised to find out that I can identify with her on so many levels!!!! There are many situations and experiences that acured in her life that also acured in mine. It gives you(me) a special kind of (you are not alone) feeling that gives a added sense of comfort knowing that someone else experienced the same things you've experienced. I didn't know what to expect from watching her interview and I'm pleasantly surprised by how great and helpful it has for me!!!!! KUDOS TO YOU PAULA!!!! I'm so glad you preserved, pushed through, stayed motivated and encouraged to pursue her dreams and ultimately become successful in spite of bad, traumatic experiences that happened to her. I love this interview that vlad did with Paula because she gives you complete honesty with a side of laughs. Her struggle will help future actors and actresses to be great at their craft but also to make sure that they make sure to pan for the future because hollywood fame and money is not always consistent.

Watched a couple of Vlad's teaser clips of her interview-where she's talking in code and evading questions.... then I just clicked this one, not realizing its the full interview. Great movie that Hustle and Flow. Paula played that great. I never saw her as a villain. But, the character was not supportive. I get what she meant by the character felt duped. Paula,said that Cosby reprimanded her about playing strippers and girls in the hood. Ironically he's serving time.
