  • Ivanka Trump recently lost her cool during an interview with Cosmopolitan magazine. Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian, hosts of The Young Turks, break it down. Tell us what you think in the comment section below. tytnetwork.com/join
    "Ivanka Trump is turning into her father. The usually composed and genteel businesswoman gave a very Donald Trumpian interview to Cosmopolitan on Wednesday, in which she denied that Donald has said the things he’s said, stumbled over basic questions about his new maternity leave proposal, and scolded the reporter for doing her job. Then, when the interview turned out to be more pointed than a sweet conversation between gal friends, Ivanka bounced.
    Donald Trump’s Ivanka-backed plan proposes six weeks of paid unemployment benefits for women who physically give birth to a child, paid for by cutting “fraud” in the unemployment insurance system. It does not include any paternity leave or leave for a mother who adopted her child or whose partner gave birth. Paternity leave has been proven to have lasting effects on greater equality in housework, child care responsibilities, and wages. Cosmo reporter Prachi Gupta pointed that out, and Ivanka brushed it off…”*

      annnnd.... what about the kid? The newborn baby? Have you ever seen a baby? Do you know what a baby is? Do you have any idea what it's like to go from living a life with no children, to living a life as a family with a child? It takes a little transition time and is quite the ordeal to say the least...

    • @mindhorizon
      @mindhorizon 7 лет назад +5

      The proposal is intended for the medical recovery from giving birth plus establishment of breast feeding. This is apparently not covered at all in current law. So to get this established in the law in the form presented is a big step. Overreaching in the intent of a proposal will probably result in so much push-back that nothing will happen at all. This is progress. The additional conditions wanted can be looked at later.

      +Debra Charles-clay You clearly went all the way to the extreme with that one to take away from the fact that what they are saying is that his plan does not work, at all, and is not practical for a family of today. You say "I would rather support women who like being women, having babies with men who like being men" but this does not give complete support even to those people. Suppose a husband and wife have to adopt because they have been trying but they then realize they cannot not get pregnant...well according to Trump they don't deserve anytime to get adjusted to bringing a new baby into the house and learning to care for another life. His policy makes it harder on a family that is already having trouble getting pregnant to even plan for adoption and the expenses that come along with that because they now have to worry about income for those next 6-8 weeks after birth for the father and also for the mother i she did not physically give birth. This policy is so unrealistic and detached from the normal working class family.

      Amen. it feels a bit misogynistic to me that everyone just wants to gloss over the real point that the trumps were trying to make. That females are recommended by doctors to take a minimum of 6 weeks to recover from the physical trauma. People die giving birth. It's a healing period.
      Yes I think it would be nice for all parents to get a paid leave to be with their new children. I think it should be more than 6 weeks. As much as our government (both parties) spend on themselves should go to pay it. They make far too much for such horrible results.
      That would be real fair progress for all.

      No it's not! Maternity leave is more about bonding, the woman can go back to work immediately and then it's paternity leave. Gay couples, adoptive parents etc are entitled to leave. Everywhere but there I guess? This is so backward, like everything else in America it seems. To the rest of the world, it is called paid parental leave, assumed you guys had it already.

      Great for mothers, paid maternity leave funded by the government. Not so great for everyone else who pays for it, meaning it's undoubtedly a freebee paid by government programs, meaning citizens who pay taxes. Hmm, yeah, so some citizens are subsidizing others in the form of a mandated social program initiated by government. In other words, people do not & won't take responsibility for paying for their own actions.

    • @maureenlaneski2802
      @maureenlaneski2802 7 лет назад +6

      Dee Bee the whiners pay taxes, too. it us in the interest of the country to have children bond securely to their parents, be fed and cared for (all of them) and for employees to be able to focus on their work. Also, if people aren't spending everything thst they have on necessities, then they can purchase more goods, which keeps the economy going. Henry Ford was called crazy for the $5 day, but his employees sure went out and bought cars. They could afford to. By not ensuring some basic needs are taken care of, we create wage slaves and a welfsre/debtor class, then blame them for their own problems even though an entire class of affluent influentials is actively working to take as much from them as possible. Some day you will need more help than your loved ones can afford to give. Are we supposed to leave you up on a mountain to die of exposure then? When people have totally treatable, curable diseases, but can't afford deductibles and copays and end up bankrupt eventually, are we seriously to chastise them for getting sick?

      Excuse me, I stayed home and raised my children, who are now in their 30's, with their own businesses, employing others. I happen to believe that parents are the ones who should raise their own children, at least until they are in school, not strangers at some day care.

    • @serendipity9649
      @serendipity9649 7 лет назад +7

      When children first start school, they do tend to pick up every sniffle or cough going around. It is because they still need to build up their immune levels, and yes, they get sick a lot. It usually gets better by about grade 1-2. Children tend to handle colds better than adults. I don't consider children going to school, "dumping them off", since by law they have to attend school. I'm glad your wife had an easy labour. Not everyone does. I happened to have both mine with nothing either. Again, my husband & I decided that I would stay home with our children until they reached school age. A child's personality if fully developed by the time they are 6yrs old. We wanted to instill our values in our children. They are both grown now with children of their own. And, they remember. Funny thing is, by the time they were both in high school, they were they only ones who had both parents still together, and we still are, 38 yrs later.

    • @serendipity9649
      @serendipity9649 7 лет назад +27

      You really should read before you try jumping all over someone. I never said nannies were bad, what I was bitching about was her so-called nod to "Women who work" and maybe giving them a paltry 6 weeks maternity leave, especially when her company gives no maternity leave whatsoever. Okay, so you can afford a nanny who lives in, feeds your kids, tucks them in bed, & yes, loves your kids, but 90% of women DO NOT get that option. They have to get up every morning, feed, dress, bundle into the car, 1-2-3? kids and drive them to a sitter, or day care? Why do they not deserve a decent amount of maternity leave (6 months even) without losing their jobs, or all of their income. The rest of the world does it! But, she doesn't give a crap about those 90% of women, so get down off your high horse, maybe, just maybe some of those 90% would like to spend a little bit of time with their babies.

      Depending on which parent is the financial provider of the family, the one who works has the pleasure to come home and bond with the child. The mother has the opportunity to allow baby and dad (or mom), to have their own special time together. It is up to the couple to work together to make sure they each have special time with the baby. Having a child is a major commitment both emotionally, financially and time must be spent to raise a happy well adjusted child. There can be no "selfishness" in a person who wants to have a baby. This can be difficult for people who have a child when in fact one of them never wanted children, or had a bad childhood. they should be teaching more in 8th grade what is involved in raising a child, parenting skills, finance skills etc. should be taught before a kid graduates H.S. so they aren't just thrown out into the world with no practical knowledge of how the real world works. Anyone who decides to bring a child into this world should attend parenting classes prior to having a child. Instead they teach Shakespeare and how to become a follower of Islam.

    Up here in Canada, Either the mother or father can take 35 weeks of parental leave after the baby is born or adopted. The parents can share the leave however they choose. If eligible for the program, the benefits equal 55 per cent of the parent's average weekly insurable wage, up to a maximum of $485 per week. Mothers who give birth bond naturally...for others, they need that opportunity to have the time to bond as well.

      Except that the US has the lowest rated in the developed world...the US also spends the most amount of money per capita on healthcare which is interesting because many Americans go years without basic medical care.
      The real problem is, most Americans will never afford their cataract sx. In the North, the wealthy Canadians will often travel to the US for certain procedures to have them done faster out of pocket. It takes a lot to care for a new child especially when you're learning yourself and a lot of people forget that. Everyone cares when it's in the womb once it's outside they couldn't care less

      I take exception to the assumption that unemployment fraud is not already being investigated-it is, and aggressively so. On one hand the Republican party platform encourages smaller government and on the other supports a policy of "cheater" reform that would require a a huge increase in the size of these programs--I know lets abolish unemployment subsidies program altogether (paid for by employers) and then no problem....(this is stated ironically folks).

    "So, it means to benefit, whether it's in same-sex marriages as well, to benefit the mother who has given birth to the child if they have legal married status under the tax code."
    Wait wait wait! So single moms and unmarried women do not receive maternity leave under this plan, AND if the marriage equality act is abolished, then neither do lesbian couples. And this plan is "revolutionary"?

    • @brookek2
      @brookek2 7 лет назад +2

      Al N. Trump said he won't touch the marriage equality act. The Supreme Court made their decision so the gay is here to stay.

    • @jenniferquinones3439
      @jenniferquinones3439 7 лет назад +2

      So basically, anyone married to the woman who gave birth would obviously benefit financially from this. It does not mean unmarried women would not be covered. So if you are a women, single or married, women married to a women or a man married to a women who has given birth, those people would benefit as they are either the person who gave birth or the person married to the person who gave birth.

    • @alicenelms3605
      @alicenelms3605 7 лет назад

      b p-- That's true. It's just hard to say because he has surrounded himself with so many people who are against marriage equality. But you are right that he did say that. :)
      Jennifer Q--If you look at what I quoted above, it's really ambiguous as to whether unmarried would be covered, but implies that they wouldn't. She specified that lesbian couples would need to have legal married status but it still is only the woman who actually gave birth... So, that says to me that marital status may play a part in this policy. After all, why would it only apply to lesbian women? However, I'm not saying that I'm definitely right. Ivanka might have just answered the question poorly or maybe she hadn't thought about lesbian women. Maybe she never even thought about single and unmarried women. The Trumps aren't experienced politicians and legislatures so it might have just been that she just wasn't ready to discuss those details and something that came across differently than what she intended. Who knows?

    my daughter and I lost our heart beats during child birth. I ended up getting an emergency C-section, my daughter stayed in the NICU for a couple of weeks and I had to stay in the hospital longer because I became quiet ill. My recovery ended up taking about 14 weeks because my incision kept opening. I has not granted maternity leave, I actually had to quit my job. I couldn't get disability because I didn't "qualify" and my husband couldn't get paternity leave to help me with the difficulties my daughter and I were facing at the beginning of Parenthood. I'm finding that my case is not uncommon or unheard of..cases like this are why it is important to have both maternity and paternity leaves. JS.

      +Cecilia Morris Seriously, I cannot believe how little time and support families get in the U.S. It's pretty awful. This policy proposal is where Canada was 25 years ago. Canada and European countries give much more time than just 6 weeks for recovery, family time, you can share the time, married or not, same-sex or not. There are maternity benefits AND parental benefits. Women especially should demand better.

      "benefit the mother who has given birth to the child of they have legal married status" so Ana says it wont impact the lives of too many people. Well a couple of generations ago it certainly would have. A policy like this is pro family. That should be a positive. The couples that dont want to get married, that's their choice, and gay male couples miss out, because no womb.

    Isn't this about maternity leave? Men don't get pregnant and can work right through the time the baby is born in a women's body.

      Maternity and paternity leave aren't just meant to recover. It's essential bonding time parents and child. The far right wants us to keep popping out babies? They better pay for the time off.

      Liz Luciano, what about the single fathers that are adjusting? Also, the times have changed as has the family makeup, but please, continue to only consider your needs, as a (white) woman. So what about women who experience infertility? /smh

    • @larryb7273
      @larryb7273 7 лет назад +2

      +Liz Luciano - Agree, and the woman/mother is the first to take into consideration. America has been so far behind in this form of care for far too long. Next stage, it would be more in line with other countries, to allow the father time off as well; Even the new mom needs much more support the first few weeks and there's not always family near by.

    Why does it always have to be government? Why can't parents pay into a maternity fund that's tax deductible and when you have enough in your account then you go on maternity leave? Just a thought because I am sick of the government deciding what coverage people can or can't have. Maybe have insurance that you buy for maternity leave. This way Americans can quit depending on the government to be the solution to all of our problems.

    the whole idea of maternity leave, is to address the fact, that women have extreme difficulties to carry on with their career at the very least during the last few months of pregnancy and the first few months of maternity. and yes Ana, it will impact many people, they are called moms and mom-to-bes.

      The pursuit of happiness is hard enough already! And then you constantly have to defend the 2nd amendment against Obama, trying to sneak into your house and take away your guns. Not to mention that you also constantly have to be ready protecting your voting rights (with not much success). Which isn't easy as you also must avoid getting shot by police or get bitten by dogs while you try to stop a bulldozer from vandalizing your grandmothers grave for a pipeline built by international investors.
      Man, your schedule really is tight!

What is worse than stealing another's SS numbers off a grave name they've looked up... Obama LIED his way to the top... His OWN Daddy was not an American and the Constitution says BOTH parents MUST BE AMERICAN.... yet YOU let it slidedidntcha…??? Now you are upset over what Trump lied about... At least he never stole this COUNTRY BLIND like OBAMA did when he and Michelle both toured the world daily staying in the finest hotels like Mr. N Mrs QUEEN of the Universe... It makes sense that the maternity leave is just for women that gave birth, since for what i understand that the time is granted to physically recover from giving birth, it is not intended to take care of a kid, it is basically intended for both the mother and child physically recover from the stress of birth.

      Canada also has the same type of system, I also think it applies to all parents regardless of gender or adoption. Mind you it has been years since I was on maternity leave, and the system has been updated. They even changed the name from Unemployment Insurance to Employment Insurance... I think to make it sound better as Unemployment gives it a negative feel.

      It's not about birthing it, it's about being with your newborn. A new born needs a lot of care. And one person taking care of him it's going to be a huge burden. Not that a virgin like yourself would know anything about having kids and taking proper care of one. And even if it didn't require cares, there is nothing wrong with wanting to spend time looking after your first son/daughter or new born.

  • @gigitrue63

    21 years ago next week, my husband and I adopted our son. I had NO rights to take any sort of leave because I didn't actually give birth to my child. I found that RIDICULOUS. Whether or not you are recovering from a physical delivery, you still have a newborn at home, who is waking up every few hours throughout the night to eat, who cries for no reason at all at 2 am, etc. You are also trying to form a bond with this child, and the schedule of a newborn turns the family upside down! My job "graciously' offered to let me take 6 weeks FMLA time off - without pay - even though I had much more than that saved up. I found another job and have been there ever since. Today, the law already allows for maternity leave for adoptive mothers, so I don't understand why this proposed measure would be such a huge step forward?

  • @barlysmith
