I find it very difficult to watch or enjoy these shows anymore. My niece Alana went missing last year and not knowing what happened or where she is has been devastating for us. It's impossible not to feel for the family in a way I never could before.
I was touched by her student who showed such love and empathy toward her beloved teacher. Speaks volumes about her character, the student's and Catherine's.
The fact she had such an impact on lives that lady even attened the court 30 years after she was her teacher speaks volumes for what a special person she was.
His wife should have connected the dots when she found out that her best friend was tied with law enforcement grade handcuffs. She knew he had ordered similar stuff. Together with the 19-year-old-victim case, she could not have missed the connections. She was in denial all along and that's the reason why she didn't heed her family's warnings and proceeded with the wedding.

Not being too judgy but I don’t care how short Of knowledge it would’ve been; soon as I found out my fiance was an accused rapist; I WOULD CALL EVERYTHING OFF!!! I don’t know how she married this sick, unattractive male.
Wow, her journal entry one month before she died was truly touching and it was like she felt a premonition. I got goosebumps as the detective read those powerful words. Her spirit would never be shut down and her voice would be heard throught that DNA sample even decades after her violent and premature death. Justice was finally made. She was right. The spirit prevails.
For all those who are commenting about how he got probation for the SA in the 80s, you have to know that that was something for that time. This was around the time when they were rolling out the "No means No" date rape campaign. I was in college at the time. It was like if you knew the person, then he couldn't SA you because you must have "led him on." I wish I was exaggerating about this, but I'm not.
There are cases of ladies leading the guys on of course and only regretting about sex the next day. Regret is not r8pe. But of course there are other genuine r8pe cases.
I get what you mean! Not everyone wants children or marriage. Many people live fruitful lives without either one or both. SMH 🤦🏽♀️ she might would have went on to have no children - or just got married. Idk I think this society think if you don’t have one or both of those- you’re not normal.
@Marlaina In the video, someone mentioned about the victim having her life cut short and won’t have children etc. Not everyone wants to have children. The world is populated as it is.
Omg! Peoples lack of common sense is so embarrassing. He said he didn’t know them in school. It wouldn’t be hard to deduce they were freshman once he found out they would be his fiancée’s bridesmaids.
The editors of 48 hours did a good job on this episode especially when the women(detective ,genealogist) were almost syncing each other's statements at the beginning of the episode
As a former teacher who was able to carry on friendships with my elementary students and I get to see them get married, have their own families, be successful in life this case resonates with me. Her students loved her even to this day and she never got to see them succeed. She never got to see them grow up. And in turn they never got the chance to continue that friendship that was so valuable to them. 😫
Unbelievable. Stupid “best friends” can get you killed. Victim found with police issue handcuffs. Best friend’s “police obsessed” husband had handcuffs dangling from car’s rearview mirror. Same guy had been convicted of violent sex crime. HELLO?! Another example of investigative INCOMPETENCE. How did they overlook this guy?!!!
Yes, I wonder if the police made public that handcuffs had been used. And if so, why didn’t Diana ever mention to the police that her husband drove around with handcuffs hanging from his mirror?
She just didn’t want to believe and or find out if was him and then have to deal with her guilt. Easier to lie to yourself and rationalize things away.
This kind of devil can be outwardly charming and hide their true colors. In the video, you even hear of some ppl who didn’t believe he’s convicted of the crime cos he’s a “nice guy”. Only the victims know the real side of him. He never showed that side of him to his ex-wife. I’m sure we all hide things from our parents and they don’t even know half of the things we do even if we live in the same household. A rape allegation in those days didn’t mean much unless there’s concrete evidence. It could be mutually-agreed sex but the girl regretted the sex the next day. That’s of course not the case here. But his ex-wife didn’t know and so gave him the benefit of the doubt.
There are still fantastic teachers. They have SO much more to deal with today and I personally know some leaving the profession because they have no support, violent students, and are burnt out and stressed out due to these factors.
@ yep, that too, a close friend of mine wants to quit teaching herself she literally said she’s only there for the kids. they mostly have her doing administrative work that’s it. she originally wanted to be a forensic psychologist but she couldn’t afford it.
I also have a twin sister and the bond we have is so strong. I don’t think I could keep on living if something like this happened to her. I’m so sorry for Allison. I can’t imagine how difficult it must be even to this day 😢
She stated she was married to a MONSTER AND DIDN’T KNOW? Lady pull your head out of your arse. You found out he was a monster 4 months before you married him but YOU chose to marry him anyways. THE MONSTER THAT YOU CALL HIM. Give me a break woman.
It’s was the early 80s. He likely not only followed sentencing guidelines at the time, but he’s probably dead or close to it. That’s not going to happen.

Howdy from Texas! I am so moved by the fact that RUclips enables a global community to enjoy RUclips videos together! And this show is so good that I can see why people from all over the world would want to watch it. ☮️ 💜
So the friend Diana, knowing all what she knew about Clayton, didn’t realize there was something rotten in Denmark when poor Catherine came up dead and the handcuffs were a main issue? Furthermore, if the investigation thought it was someone she knew, didn’t they question friends and people in Catherine’s life and then branch out from there? I don’t understand this. However, cudos to those people who did all the genealogy. They worked really hard and figured it out since the investigations didn’t focus on friends in Catherine’s present and past .
This man is the worst kind of criminal. He preyed on the trust of innocent women and then when they let their guard down, he ambushed them and raped them. I hate that he lived a whole life while he stole a piece (or in Catherine's case, entirely) of their lives. Just tragic.
I'm 72 and I still remember my 2nd grade teacher, Mrs. Redding. She specifically told me I could be whatever I wanted -and I believed her. I eventually ran my own small business successfully. I always remembered what she told me.
That's a wonderful comment to make to a child.... that teacher probably lived to be a teacher she probably thank God everyday for her vocation.... I know I would
Her student is a testament to the person she was. To remember her from 2nd grade and attend her trial faithfully every day tells us so much about her but also the student. I am so angry at this man for taking Mary away not only for her sake but also for all of the students whose lives she would have changed.
When they said the same handcuffs he used for her murder were the ones used to arrest him tears came to my eyes and the hair on my arms stood up. I feel like it was Catherine beyond the grave saying I got you. I got you.
She was a neighbor of my mom's when this happened. We were always frustrated during the years because it just seemed dropped. Little did we know what was happening quietly. I wish Mom was here to know what happened.

Her friend really did her wrong.
Exactly! I feel like she knew more
I agree, it was odd, that she didn't see any dots to connect.
EXACTLY, SHE DEFINITELY KNEW
And the way she explained her reaction to finding out seems so fake and theatrical
I can just hear the judge when he was charged with rape. "Oh, I don't want to ruin the future of this promising young man!" 🙄 when will judges learn to put violent predators away so they don't escalate?
Right
Exactly. Convicting someone for their own actions = the guilty person ruined THEIR OWN future. It's so stupid for judges to react like that.
He was given probation for tying up and SA a woman?! No jail time?!
@@OOL-UV2 sickening to think of the disgusting smirk on their faces when the judge gives them a free pass and the victim gets the slap in the face....unjust, unfair
Beyond disgusting
I had a crush on her in College. I worked with her and her twin sister at McDonald's. One of the nicest persons you would ever meet. RIP Catherine
The fact that the victims friend was so desperate to get married that she would marry convicted sex offender is mind blowing.
Just the small clips of her twin sisters testimony had me teary eyed. He thought he'd never be caught since he never gave up his DNA and it had been soo many years later. That DNA family tree mapping is incredible.
God bless all of y'all who never gave up on bringing him to justice.
Great work Tina and Sheryl La point .
That was one of the best told, yet saddest true crime stories I've ever heard. 😢 Thank you for honoring the memory of Mary Catherine Edwards. Rest in Peace. 😞
Excellent detective work to everyone involved. Thank you for bringing this roach to justice! RIP to this amazing teacher. ❤
Not being too judgy but I don’t care how short
Of knowledge it would’ve been; soon as I found out my fiance was an accused rapist; I WOULD CALL EVERYTHING OFF!!! I don’t know how she married this sick, unattractive male.
That makes no sense. I could accuse you right here and now, according to your logic everyone in your life should abandon you.
Think of the times and how young she was and how convincing he was.
She was in denial
Cognitive dissonance in play
@@cikatomo3092he was convicted, not just accused. They gave him a very light sentence for raping the 19 year old.
48 hours is the Best! In most cases these awful criminals are caught! In this case these 2 women are absolute HEROES! ❤️❤️
He don’t remember but the sisters was in his wedding …😡😡 what a POS
Well obviously he was lying, duh
@@findingfulfillmentwithraehow rude!!!!
@@Mags7760how is that rude what they said was 100% truth
@@maryjane4432It’s the way it’s said.
It's a common interrogation tactic. Get them to lie on the record to have even more evidence of what a POS they are in court.
It was like if you knew the person, then he couldn't SA you because you must have "led him on."
I wish I was exaggerating about this, but I'm not.
You’re not exaggerating! I know personally the pain of this time.
There are cases of ladies leading the guys on of course and only regretting about sex the next day. Regret is not r8pe. But of course there are other genuine r8pe cases.
People always assume " having children " is every woman's ultimate goal in life. It's not . Some ? Sure. All ? Nope
How is this relevant to the story?
@@theinitialscc1924This is a wonderfully thoughtful comment.
I get what you mean! Not everyone wants children or marriage. Many people live fruitful lives without either one or both. SMH 🤦🏽♀️ she might would have went on to have no children - or just got married. Idk I think this society think if you don’t have one or both of those- you’re not normal.
@Marlaina
In the video, someone mentioned about the victim having her life cut short and won’t have children etc. Not everyone wants to have children. The world is populated as it is.
If he didn't know them, how did he know they were Freshman.
I was just going to comment that!!!
I said the same exact thing!
Omg! Peoples lack of common sense is so embarrassing. He said he didn’t know them in school. It wouldn’t be hard to deduce they were freshman once he found out they would be his fiancée’s bridesmaids.
Asking your fiancé about his arrest a simply taking his word for it is wild!
Different times. You couldn’t just go online and background check people. We are very lucky to have access to these kinds of things.
Plus, she was a teenager. Married for 11 years and divorced by the time she was 31, means she got married at 18 or 19.
At first I was like she was young but oh my gosh she's slow poor lady
That's why you need fathers!!!
Exactly. I’m gonna be front row of his trial everyday…..
The editors of 48 hours did a good job on this episode especially when the women(detective ,genealogist) were almost syncing each other's statements at the beginning of the episode
Yes I've never seen that before on 48 hours that was clever
48 hours is the best crime show on youtube
As a former teacher who was able to carry on friendships with my elementary students and I get to see them get married, have their own families, be successful in life this case resonates with me. Her students loved her even to this day and she never got to see them succeed. She never got to see them grow up. And in turn they never got the chance to continue that friendship that was so valuable to them. 😫
The two smart women who tackled the genealogy and helped solve this crime...absolutely super women!
Absolutely amazing detective work ❤
Such a professional investigation from start to finish. Incredible.
The student who is going to be a lawyer! 💜 all the other attorneys going against her better watch out. The heart she has is amazing.
Man he probably thought he got away with it all these years.
Exactly. But police should have investigated all former men in her life anyway.
I love these detectives for being aware that despite the amazing work they did, sometimes justice and closure can't be.
Man, she must’ve been a great teacher, great teachers just don’t come around like that anymore these days.
Yes they do.
My son is a great teacher and is there for the kids that want to learn.
You must be a bot.
I also have a twin sister and the bond we have is so strong. I don’t think I could keep on living if something like this happened to her. I’m so sorry for Allison. I can’t imagine how difficult it must be even to this day 😢
He wasn’t hiding in plain sight. Women repeatedly told everyone who he was they just refused to look and listen.
She stated she was married to a MONSTER AND DIDN’T KNOW? Lady pull your head out of your arse. You found out he was a monster 4 months before you married him but YOU chose to marry him anyways. THE MONSTER THAT YOU CALL HIM. Give me a break woman.
I love the way they let him walk towards the elevator 😂😂😂goooottteeem
Yes, he was like: "Ooohhh! Almost! It was so close..." 🤦🏻♂️
Yeah, they certainly weren't worried about him out running them if it came to a chase
The judge that let him out on probation the first time should also face charges.
Yes! 🎯🤬
Yes
It’s was the early 80s. He likely not only followed sentencing guidelines at the time, but he’s probably dead or close to it. That’s not going to happen.
A cold case solved means a warm bed in jail
God almighty. Did he eat half the steers in Texas?!!!
Nice one! 😁
So awesome this attorney Helenia and how much her teacher inspired her, they are both such lights!
That former student is absolutely beautiful, inside and out. She would be proud. Bless them both.
I cried .. so many horrible sick walking around us 😢
This episode struck me the hardest because she was simply living her life and along comes some sick freak. All those years of life he got. Her student who sat at the trial, is an amazing and beautiful woman who will make the world a better place.
One of the best crime story featured at 48Hours. Commendable contributions from every one who emboldened and persevered in their efforts to track down the killer of the hapless victim. KUDOS🎉

Howdy from Texas! I am so moved by the fact that RUclips enables a global community to enjoy RUclips videos together! And this show is so good that I can see why people from all over the world would want to watch it. ☮️ 💜
Those handcuffs went full circle.I got chills when they said that they handcuffed him with those.I loved it
Her student to be there to see him go to prison really touched my ❤️. Im thankful DNA finally stopped his crimes.
Kudos not cudos 🙄🙄🙄
I know I would
Sorry, but her friend must be the most gullible, dumbest person ever.
lol. Yes
Her student is a testament to the person she was. To remember her from 2nd grade and attend her trial faithfully every day tells us so much about her but also the student. I am so angry at this man for taking Mary away not only for her sake but also for all of the students whose lives she would have changed.
l have to agree with the guy that says some people are demon possessed.
ABSOLUTELY!
They are the demons
When they said the same handcuffs he used for her murder were the ones used to arrest him tears came to my eyes and the hair on my arms stood up. I feel like it was Catherine beyond the grave saying I got you. I got you.
She was a neighbor of my mom's when this happened. We were always frustrated during the years because it just seemed dropped. Little did we know what was happening quietly. I wish Mom was here to know what happened.
Incredible investigative work done. What a great team. Good job!
