12 HOUR Smoky Executive Bus in Indonesia 🇮🇩

- Today I'm leaving Banda Aceh and heading toward Medan and eventually to Bukit Lawang. I decided to take an executive bus this time and stay away from the economy buses. I went with the Sempati Star on Traveloka. It had good reviews, looked clean and spacious and so I went with them. You'll see at the beginning of the video there are many options when choosing a bus. They're all different makers with different decor and amenities. The bus I was on looked pretty good. There were just 3 seats in a row and all the seats were pretty spaced out. You could recline back pretty far but the leg rest doesn't go up high enough and it just feels like you're sliding down the whole time. You can't really lay on your side because of the huge headrests on the chair.
All in all the bus wasn't THAT bad, my main gripe is with how the bus driver drives and that this bus driver was constantly smoking cigarettes when there are no smoking stickers all over the bus on the windows. The buses choose not to take the highway to save on tolls so they choose the local roads that are narrow and super busy. On top of that, the roads are super windy and you are constantly being thrown from side to side because the driver only knows one speed, FAST. It's impossible to sleep because the bus is always jerking around, stopping, and speeding up, non-stop.
After arriving safely in Medan early in the morning, I found my way over to a bakery and also the next bus stop where I was to take a bus to Bukit Lawang(although I thought I was going to Tangkahan, I thought they were right next to each other...)
I get to Bukit Lawang and quickly meet Anton who I'm sure just waits for foreigners to stop at the bus stop and tries to get their business. He got mine and he showed me to a pretty nice place in the middle of town.

Best advise I could give you bro from the times I’ve done it is smash back a sleeping pill right at the start. Indo bus or car drivers will give you bad anxiety
i never take executive back then when double deck not yet exist
all i have is low fresh air bus,smelly smokey,lightless

the north sumatran once occupied car driving job all over java they also known for their hard attitude including when they speak,they are known as loud speaking
then it becomes a common thing for all bus riding over java and sumatra
we hope for trans sumatran train, well south sulawesi got a brand new train recently
thats part of 'joy' and 'pride' for driving bus like that here... sounds silly yaa.. there are a javanese expression among buses enthusiast, 'ora joss, ora penak', 😅
Its cause 2 lines road of mountain side.
Aceh Medan Toll road 250 km which is strike and 4 lines road not yet completely (20%).
Maybe in next 10 years for sigli to Langsa section.

About Comfort ride, Maybe next time you should try another Buses Company Like (Juragan 99) or (27 Trans) from Jakarta to Malang, and (Indorent) from Jakarta to Yogyakarta.
In my opinion, the most comfortable Aceh-Medan bus is the Harapan Indah bus.the driver is not reckless and there is a smoking room in the back.

Hello from CA. Beautiful place in Bukit Lawang. After riding numerous, rough bus trips in Sumatra, i changed to private van to practice Bahasa Indonesia & save my body. Mawar Bakery enak sekali. Tough job driving a bus. School districts here are desperate for bus drivers. Take care.

Just the driver? I took a bus from Jakarta to Sumatra they said was no-smoking but everyone was smoking. After the ferry to Sumatra I couldn't stand it and left the bus at a rest stop.
By chance I found a guy who was being paid to drive a new car from Jakarta to a company in Sumatra, and he passed near where I was going, so I cut a deal with him. The crazy part is he lived on the same street as me in Jakarta.

You are in bukit lawang. Woww. I've been there 2 times. Actually my grandpa has his own an intercity bus. We rode that bus, with all our big family. Only 1,5 hours from my grandpa's house. The sweet memory.
The independence monument you passed on the way is tugu binjai. Binjai was the small town between medan and bukit lawang and that the place where i live today haha. Salam dari Binjai😊🙌

Put cloves in every cooking such as rendang, semoer, gulai, soto, etc , mostly cooking with chicken, beef and pork bring rich taste on them .

i think southeast asia really use to that kind of ride😂. we ride all the time like that here in the philippine and i'm pretty sure that bus is way more comfortable than most of our buses here. but our infamous day to day ride is the jeepney. and we love it! we know you'll get the hang out of it Nick and love it too! 🙏🙏
If you want to taste that tasty banana bread you ate on the last visit, just ask for “bolu pisang” next time you visit a bakery.
That “bolu pisang” term would work almost anywhere in Indonesia.
Well, at least in Sumatra where we live we call that banana sponge cake is bolu pisang.

That's a happy accident. Bukit Lawang is cool as hell man. And those little local buses are totally fine for the shorter journeys. I took the train from Medan to Binjai, then one of those on to BL.
Come to kuningan west java, hiking ciremai mount and beautiful forest in here.
Setalah 5 tahunan tidak naik bus, alhamdulillah minggu lalu ada kesempatan naik bus kembali dari bogor ke klaten jawa tengah dengan armada po. Rosalia Indah walaupun tidak naik di armada doubledecker/executive plus nya, rasanya cukup mengobati rasa rindu/nostalgia masa mudik lebaran 😁.. Kalau om Nick ada kesempatan road party naik bus di pulau jawa boleh di coba naik Rosalia Indah dengan kelas Executive plus / Super Top nya

i also used to have bad experience with the sempati star back in 2017 :( the ride that supposed to be 12 hours turned out to be 17 long hour..the bus got broken couple of times.wheni went back from medan to banda aceh i rode harapan indah bus it's much better, n all went smooth n only took 10 hours from medan-banda aceh
You certainly have a taste of some of the common practices very different from the west. Imagine riding motorcycle on such narrow road/alley. Hats off to your courage, Nick. Smoke bus, welcome to sumatera. Small road but the bus go fast. Usually the speed abaout 100 - 140 km/h in small road.

Indonesian drivers are something else, whether motorbikes or buses
One of the things I don't like taking any bus, whether it's economy or executive, is that the driver doesn't relax driving it. always fast as if not thinking about the passengers who always jump from their seats because of the shaking. Not only that, the smell on the bus is often so bad that you often feel nauseous. the smell of smoke mixed with other smells.
therefore the first choice when traveling is always using the train. taking the bus is a last resort.
yup, i thought maybe by riding one of the nicer buses it would be slower and more comfortable, i was wrong...
@@NickKTravel but there's no train in Aceh me as a pro Banda Aceh's resident who has been traveling back and forth by taking bus every damn year also feel dead inside every time i entering the bus. The drivers are like don't give a damn abt others, they would always smoking non-chalantly, and i think it happens to all the driver in Indonesia lolol😃🔫

Some buses crew not smoking on the cabin but some more still smoke on the cabin, yeah so i suggest you should take a back seat , so far from the cabin crew, no smoke
i actually moved back because the bus was empty, I could still smell the cigarette smoke in the back...

I have tried took executive from Bali to Jogya , it was very nice bus. But is enough only once time because traffics on the road is crazy, it was so scared how people drive. So the train any class is my favourite during my visit Indonesia.
