I didn't realise that Alan Partridge borrowed this scene lock stock for his skit with Rebecca Front, and Partridge himself aped the unsophisticated remarks of Harty.
Janet Street Porter didn’t say anything for AGES all whilst grinning. When she ‘stuck up’ for Vivienne it was only to make herself ‘look good’ it was very poor.
The Beatles became multimillionaires, but that doesn't mean they didn't have some terrible songs. The costumes on the show seemed like a comedy routine.
@@TibetanFox68 fashion often has extravagant clothing like this shown on the runway. Elements of the designs make it into both high end and everyday clothing brands, they're not necessarily meant to be worn as entire outfits or everyday ones, only for events or inspiration (with certain items being pieced with regular clothing in a complementary way). You'll struggle to find many normal items on a runway, but they still shape the industry and set trends.
@@TibetanFox68 Maybe they seemed comedic TO YOU. These outfits are beautiful and unique, and clearly not for everyone, but that doesn't mean you can insult them.
A very low moment for Sue Lawley who really should have known better. You can always rely on Janet Street Porter to redress the balance. Brava Vivienne!
I totally agree with Russell Harty, what a load of rubbish fashion that nobody in their right mind would wear, and the laughter of the audience just proves it. The gentleman’s suit at the end was beautiful tailoring, but why put it up against a fancydress display. Just attention seeking. It’s a bit like the story of the King’s New Clothes, where only the little boy could see the truth, and Russell was that boy stating the truth.
Pretentious clothing and the audience could see this that is why they were laughing, like most probably television viewers were laughing too and i was one of them.
First time I've seen it and I laughed. I guess back then people were still able to reject and mock shallow celebrations of idiocy and degeneracy before all that went mainstream.
what i find really interesting is that people call her crazy, delusional, stupid, stuck up, out of touch, but VW is highly influenced by world history; her designs are super grounded and have a lot of context. you're all yapping on about "tradition", "good taste" and "decorum" and yet she's more aware and educated on it than you ever will be. she can definitely be shy and awkward when talking about what she loves but she knows exactly what she's reworking or tearing apart & she's having (OMG) fun with it. i have more respect for people who critique her for being a collage maker rather than an innovator (even though i disagree) than for anyone who just thinks she's pretentious or daft.
This interview is utterly disgusting! They're so undermining! The fact you can still buy those shoes, her collection is still on point today! Proves that they're narrow minded, clueless, rude plebs that got a kick out of making someone look stupid!
Well what did you want them to do pretend that they loved her style ? in fact the laughing actually helped to put her firmly on the map of fashion it got her in the news papers, people were talking about Vivienne Westwood.
Vivian Westwood was well known for over a decade before this.she didn’t need to b ridiculed on tv for publicity.and u don’t have to pretend to like something u don’t but to bring someone on tv to humiliate them is different
vivienne can knock all of them in to a paper..there was another humiliating interveiw like this on the late late show back then where the models all had on the platforms everyone was in hysterics.. i mean janet street porter sue lawley come on ....
Why is Vivienne Westwood famous? She was the girlfriend of Malcolm Mclaren who manufactured the Sex Pistols, who were famous because they were the fashionable thing. They swore on TV, and released an anti monarchy song whilst Vivienne did the clothes. They made a name out of being rude. So why complain when one of them gets a deserving taste of her own medicine?
I came to this clip specifically to laugh. Westwood's clothes are hideous. (Also, I once had the misfortune to meet her - she's a really ill-mannered troll.)

Why isn't Janet Street Porter saying anything to support Vivienne Westwood. Ok, i read that she did. Westwood's clothes were fantastic, that suit is beautifully made. If i could have worn them, i would. I loved her looks. Westwood's red dress is great. Harty and Sue Lawley were drabs, drabbos.

She proved them all wrong, Comfortable, Safe, middle of the road fools laughing at themselves if only they knew, Vivienne took it all in her stride, if she cared she never showed it ...... Patronising Sue Lawley in her M&S day wear ..... shameful really.
You have to remember that this is an audience with free tickets who expect to be entertained, they don't know who the guests are and probably think its all a joke

It wasn't the BBC's fault - they were laughing because they were ridiculous - It wasn't rude - she was just shown as she was.... And calling Russell Harty the voice of the 'everyman' just shows how out of touch the commentator is... 612 likes after 15 years says it all...
It's funny how the audience is laughing when Vivienne is way ahead of them, cos it's 2015 and lots of those clothes are in fashion. I saw Kendall wear a tutu!!
Who's that old queen with the beard doing the interview? Westwood saying she's "never met this response before" just goes to show how she was a bit out of touch.
Sue Lawley sat there looking like a post menopausal third rate Princess Di knockoff playing to the peanut gallery. Those clothes have been far more influential than the mediocrity offered by Lawley and Harty.
What a disgraceful interview...the BBC set the tone here and shame on Lawley and Harty. As for Street-Porter...she left it too late to step in and appeared to be Harty's side-kick for most of the shambles.
No one made fun of her it was her ridiculous designs, a classic case of the king's new clothes when ordinary people in the audience saw them they laughed
Terribly patronising but prime tv works in your favour people laugh but that’s their right it’s like art it brings out all sorts of emotions laughter ,disgust amazement, yes small minded people will laugh but what else can you expect on a light entertainment show it didn’t effect Vivian’s career it just enhanced it ..
The clothes and attitude behind the clothes is too 'original' and the British have always had problems with anyone or anything that seems outside the tribe. Most of these clothes you now see people wearing; again Viv was, like most original artists, in front of the times.
Sue Lawleys accent isn't even her own, both her and Russell Harty are bullies in plain sight. If you know just a little about bullies as I do (having worked with disturbed children) they are the saddest most unconfident, troubled people who try to make others feel as bad as they do for a momentary power trip, the aim being to escape their own low self esteem. Actually Harty and Lawley are just exposing their own painful psychological inadequacies here on national TV for anyone who is remotely aware of human nature, who does this??? I think we MUST LOOK at the institutions that hired them, along with the likes of Jimmy Savile and enabled and broadcast such a horrible spectacle lacking in any humanity, respect or understanding of an art form. Its shocking and, these events arent in isolation. The Bowie interview with Harty is appalling, the Wogan interviewwith David Icke in the 80s is of the same ilk. Its ironic that currently there is so much horror at bullying online, whereas back in the old days it seems it was more of an en mass gladiatorial event with audience participation. I didn't realise that Alan Partridge borrowed this scene lock stock for his skit with Rebecca Front, and Partridge himself aped the unsophisticated remarks of Harty.
Russell's last tv appearance. :-*
Not surprised.
@@dodibenabba1378 Well no, he means he died. Literally.
good riddance, he was a cunt.
@@BLTKellys Och, so you're a Grace Jones fan?
@Mr Vespa I never liked Grace Jones' attitudes. She was constantly in search of media exposure, so she did that night with him.
Who are the other 3 people?
Janet Street Porter didn’t say anything for AGES all whilst grinning. When she ‘stuck up’ for Vivienne it was only to make herself ‘look good’ it was very poor.
Wow. So rude. It’s crazy to me that they would invite her on to be so rude.
Can you imagine doing that to a designer now.
@MBHD153 were can i find the full show?
Where was Tor and Neumann?
I wonder what the ‘multi-millionaire’ Vivian Westwood thinks of those who were laughing.
The Beatles became multimillionaires, but that doesn't mean they didn't have some terrible songs. The costumes on the show seemed like a comedy routine.
@@TibetanFox68 What 'terrible' songs?
I mean, you only have to look at the set. That sums up this “interview” alone.
Is this a winter collection? Yes 😂
Later sent up by Alan Partridge on Knowing Me, Knowing You...AHA!
Well done Janet!!!
I love Janet SP for standing up for viv
what i find really interesting is that people call her crazy, delusional, stupid, stuck up, out of touch, but VW is highly influenced by world history; her designs are super grounded and have a lot of context. you're all yapping on about "tradition", "good taste" and "decorum" and yet she's more aware and educated on it than you ever will be. she can definitely be shy and awkward when talking about what she loves but she knows exactly what she's reworking or tearing apart & she's having (OMG) fun with it. i have more respect for people who critique her for being a collage maker rather than an innovator (even though i disagree) than for anyone who just thinks she's pretentious or daft.
Imagine bringing "education" into. Education has nothing to do with taste. Very snobbish attitude.
Rest in Power 🖤🖤🖤🖤
Someone from 2023 looking at the clothes and geniunely not understanding whats being laughed at👀
Alan Partridge brought me here lol
vivienne can knock all of them in to a paper..there was another humiliating interveiw like this on the late late show back then where the models all had on the platforms everyone was in hysterics.. i mean janet street porter sue lawley come on ....
3:33 How sweet to be an idiot
An ignorant and misinformed comment.
@@Muirton66 yeah!!
Sue who?
Well done for laughing at them ...so what who cares bloody taking themselves too seriously...ooh I've never had that reaction AND??? GET OVER IT
I came to this clip specifically to laugh. Westwood's clothes are hideous. (Also, I once had the misfortune to meet her - she's a really ill-mannered troll.)
@@decodolly1535 I cant believe how it's become a sin to laugh ...so what and I have also met her in person one of my friends was doing one of her models hair for a show and she is I'll mannered and harsh not nice at all ...I loved that they laughed here here👍👏👏👏👏👏
You have to remember this is the BBC who are so behind in anything creative and new. Thank goodness for Channel 4 they turned things on there head.
Why does he refer to the dress as a chip shop ? I can't work it out .
He means the crinkly white crinoline looks like chip paper
i don't think it was dismissive and i also think you need to chill. pretencious
if put on an empty potato sack will you keep telling me how great I look for the sake of fickle art. one days fashion is another's days cleaning rag. wear what you want.
I'd have laughed if I was there as well. Once an audience gets in a "laughy" mood it's hard to get out of it. I feel a bit sorry for Vivienne, but it was a daft idea to trot out her bizarre designs on a normal talkshow.
Yes. Her earlier punk designs were great but this was scraping the barrel. The self proclaimed ‘avant garde’ are always so gullible.
Most of the people watching it are probably too fat to wear her stuff . As for Russel harty, he’s dead so I guess there is karma
icant believe how rude they were. its horrible!
dude asked someone how "highly regarded they are" and expected an answer lmao
She proved them all wrong, Comfortable, Safe, middle of the road fools laughing at themselves if only they knew, Vivienne took it all in her stride, if she cared she never showed it ...... Patronising Sue Lawley in her M&S day wear ..... shameful really.
You have to remember that this is an audience with free tickets who expect to be entertained, they don't know who the guests are and probably think its all a joke
Considering how ridiculous some of the models look, you can't blame them.
I thought it was a joke at first. I had to check the calendar to see if it was April Fools Day! And people pay good money to wear that crap? The man’s tailored suit was the only good bit.
@@lockleaze Just because a fashion style is not what you personally like does not mean it is bad. Different people will wear different things, tailored to what they love.
They didn’t deserve her 😢
I have been wearing Vivienne's clothing since the 1970's she is one of the most influential designers ever in history...Sue Lawley, Russel Harty are disposable, a million would be media students could do a better job tomorrow...She encouraged them to laugh to gain power over the audience...it's a cheap trick, narrow minded presenting and I have seen photographs of Mizz Lawley wearing Westwood..makes you laugh really..
nick dogma this interview pisses me off every time I come across it, so disrespectful
Just discovered Sue Langley's interviews from 90ties - Desert island disc (I am not British). What a narcissistic, mean woman she was. This program is interesting from psychological and sociological point of you (as well as interesting part of history) but gives very negative vibes. Not portrays BBC in a good light.
It wasn't the BBC's fault - they were laughing because they were ridiculous - It wasn't rude - she was just shown as she was.... And calling Russell Harty the voice of the 'everyman' just shows how out of touch the commentator is... 612 likes after 15 years says it all...
Sue Lawley did this to Christine Keeler, but being the intelligent classy lady she is Christine Keeler came out on top.
This is obviously the scene that inspired the Alan Partridge parody.
It's funny how the audience is laughing when Vivienne is way ahead of them, cos it's 2015 and lots of those clothes are in fashion. I saw Kendall wear a tutu!!
Vivienne‘s outfits are amazing 😻 I’d like to buy her clothes. 😃
Wow so direspectful, poor Vivienne
Fantastic outfits. I guess the guests and audience just weren't quite ready for it.
Who's that old queen with the beard doing the interview? Westwood saying she's "never met this response before" just goes to show how she was a bit out of touch.
Sadly what happens when you take Art to the masses, they poke fun at what they don't understand, which is a lot and it's getting worse.
Who’s laughing now?
The people who can see how silly her clothes were.
Sue Lawley sat there looking like a post menopausal third rate Princess Di knockoff playing to the peanut gallery. Those clothes have been far more influential than the mediocrity offered by Lawley and Harty.
She was (and probably is) highly narcissistic woman.
That man died that same year
2:26- you would never wear that. Everyone needs to get off their pretentious high horses on here!
What a disgraceful interview...the BBC set the tone here and shame on Lawley and Harty. As for Street-Porter...she left it too late to step in and appeared to be Harty's side-kick for most of the shambles.
Love u viv
No one made fun of her it was her ridiculous designs, a classic case of the king's new clothes when ordinary people in the audience saw them they laughed
What's the difference? It's still going to offend them if their work is mocked.
What's so funny about all of these clothes? Nobody would laugh at them today. In fact nobody would bat an eyelid.
Thank you Vivienne Westwood for giving me confidence not to follow Sheep 🐑 R.I.P ♥️
The clothes and attitude behind the clothes is too 'original' and the British have always had problems with anyone or anything that seems outside the tribe. Most of these clothes you now see people wearing; again Viv was, like most original artists, in front of the times.
☀️☀️she was so brill and sunshine 🌞 they are ridiculous 😂
Sue Lawley = Miss Iron Knickers.
What a horrible lot.

Hideous styles of fashion Vivian presented on tv, she could and should have done so much better, clearly a low point in her career and for good reason but luckily, she managed to do well over the years afterwards
Pity Vivienne hadn't taken Grace Jones onto the interview (BBC charade) ..that would have helped shut the rude Russel Harty up...Grace could have just 'socked' him one again and let Vivienne express what she wanted to say. (I doubt the rude, boring audience would have been so brave to laugh like a bunch of ignorant sheep then)
