    Can you combine weight loss medications with different mechanisms of action, say Qsymia (stimulant) and Trulicity (GLP-1 agonist)? I was on Mounjaro going to 7.5 mg and the manufacturer pulled the plug on the $25 saving card. Right now on Trulicity 3.0 which isn't as strong clinically and wondering about a compliment medication.

    I noticed you didn't mention Vyvanse. Why don't you recommend this one? Thanks so much! 🙂

    • @DrMcGowanMD
      @DrMcGowanMD  3 года назад +9

      Kelly, Vyvanse (lisdexamfetamine) is not FDA-approved for weight loss. It is technically an ADHD medication but IS FDA approved for binge-eating disorder. It can reduce episodes of binge-eating, and may have a modest effect on weight, but strictly speaking is not a weight loss medication.

      If you can avoid it at all cost. Everyone I know including me that has had weight loss surgery has have had multiple problems and have had to have the surgery reconstructed. Everything you eat result in vomiting and /or diarrhea. It has more bad side effects than good results.

      April, yes, Trulicity can help with weight. Though it's only FDA-approved for diabetes, it also causes weight loss. It's very similar to Wegovy and Saxenda, which are approved for the treatment of obesity.

    • @DrMcGowanMD

      For someone with both obesity and diabetes, a GLP-1 receptor agonist would be the best class of medication. This includes liraglutide (Saxenda) and semaglutide (Wegovy/Ozempic). These medications help to reduce weight, and improve blood glucose control. The highest dose of semaglutide (2.4mg; brand name Wegovy) is also the most-effective weight loss medication to date. I discuss this in a separate video: ruclips.net/video/31jyXqvJI6Q/видео.html

    • @DrMcGowanMD
      @DrMcGowanMD  4 года назад +2

      Stacey, Adipex (phentermine) won't damage your heart, but can raise your blood pressure or cause palpitations. It's actually quite safe. I rarely use it alone. If I prescribe phentermine, I almost always add topiramate, since the weight loss is doubled and there are few additional side effects. With ESG, Saxenda may be the best option if it's covered by insurance, since it pairs well with the mechanism of weight loss (delayed gastric emptying).
