  • Rolls Royce Silver Shadow tyre recomendations.
For the full story on Rolls Royce Silver Shadow Tyres visit the Longstone Classic Tyres web site www.longstonet...
In this video we explore the enhanced handling that fitting Michelin XVS Asymmetric tires will give to a Silver Shadow.
The first Rolls Royce Silver Shadow Tyres were crossply tires of the size 815X15. However people soon started to want to fit radial tires. The radial alternative early Rolls Royce Silver Shadow tires would be 205VR15. Currently there are 2 main manufacturers of tyres in this size. Pirelli make a Cinturato and Avon make a Textile. We would suggest the 205VR15 Pirelli Cinturato CN72 as the best early series 1 Rolls Royce Silver Shadow Tyres.
In 1973 Rolls Royce took advantage of the new low profile tyre technology and fitted tires of the size 235/70VR15. They continued to fit these 235/70VR15 tires to the series 2 Silver Shadow in 1977 and several other models for some time after the Shadow. There are a range of budget 235/70R15 Rolls Royce Silver Shadow tires available, But the main recommendations would be:-
1/ the Avon Turbosteel that Rolls Royce fitted as standard to the post 1973 Silver Shadow.
2/ the tyre that is recommended in this video the 235/70R15 Michelin XVS
In period it has been suggested that Rolls Royce themselves wanted to fit the XVS to the Silver Shadow, but Michelin would not support the very low tyre recommendations that were offered for the Silver Shadow. It is fair to say that when these Silver Shadows were new they were often driven by a chauffeur, where the comfort of the passenger was of greater importance than the handling of the car at the higher cruising speeds we find ourselves doing today. Under the Circumstances where you are chauffeur driven in your Silver Shadow then perhaps the Avon would still be the tyre of choice. However under the majority of circumstances where these cars are driven on modern roads at 60 mph cruising speeds the improved directional stability that the XVS offers will greatly improve driver’s enjoyment of the car.

"Michelin would not support the very low tyre recommendations"
Not the first time I see this, but I call complete B/S on it. The tyre pressure recommandation on the RR (24psi front / 28psi rear) was average for the time, few cars recommended more than 28psi actually. And Citroën, owned by Michelin at the time, had recommendations as low as 15psi ! Michelin also was a pioneered in low tyre pressure for improved ride comfort.
Even recently, Jaguar recommended 26psi for comfort in the late 90's and Porsche still recommend 29psi for comfort on the Panamera.
Michelin themselves, now recommend a very similar pressure for the XVS on RR (1.7b front / 1.9b rear ; =24.7psi/27.6psi). According to the ETRTO specs, that's a load capacity of 605kg/tyre front and 660kg/tyre rear at 160kph. Plenty enough.
So, what pressure where you running here ?

I have read from various car magazines about the tyers for the Rolls-Royce & in the articles the authors have always said that it's the highest speed rating of the tyers that makes for the better ride with the car and that those types of tyres can handle the weight of the car.

With the Michelin XVS P www.longstonetyres.co.uk/catalog/product/view/id/1485/s/235-70hr15-michelin-xvs/category/9176/ It is Michelin's carcass structure that makes all the difference

Great video and tyre guide. What are your options if you want to upsize the wheels to 16" or 17" with low profile tyres? The 15" wheels with massive 70 profile sidewall is great for comfort but not the best for handling regardless of tyre.

+Steven Meyer Well a Silver Shadow will always have soft springs, and that is part of it's joy. but what we are aiming for is a tyre that helps the car steer more precisely

I know. i would do normally, but it's OK that was my Dad. And he had turned my petrol off, and was doing some blocking. I was tempted to nudge him into the creek, and his Grandson was well up for it. So he got away lucky really

Longstone Tyres - Vintage & Classic Car Tyres Your Dad is in remarkably good shape. Hopefully he won’t take your car keys away from you and send you to bed without your tea. Pass in the other lane if there’s room.

I replaced springs and sway bars with Harvey Bailey suspension kit made for shadows and they are made of heavier steel and totally make the carba drivers car.i loved every mile with them fitted to not but 3 of my Rolls-Royces 2 shadows and a spirit.i sold the shadows and regret not having r3tained the original suspension to swap back to original nas I got almost nothing for the shadows when I sold them I bought a brand new 1976 chevrolet caprice classic sedan in 2006 for what I hot for the pair of restored 1973 shadows.and no. Ore high maintenance costs.
