WOW, SO MUCH TO LEARN!!! I WANT TO MAKE THE SWEATER LIKE THE PATTERN IN RED HEART WITH THE CENTER MADE IN THIS DESIGN, I HOPE YOU MADE A VIDEO TO FOLLOW ON MAKING IT, CAUSE I'M NOT VERY GOOD WITH WRITTEN INSTRUCTIONS ONLY. IT'S HARD FOR ME TO FOLLOW WRITTEN PATTERN, BUT FOLLOWING A GREAT TEACHER LIKE YOU IS VERY EASY TO LEARN. AGAIN THANKS A LOT.
You’re a life saver. A year ago I was using variegated yarn to make a striped blanket and was successful fo 321 inches (incredible!) but then it started to move away from the perfect pattern. I put the yarn and blanket away because I didn’t know what to do. Your secrets will help me finish this blanket at last. Thank you so much 😊
This is the BEST explanation of the Planned Pooling Technique that I have seen. I have crocheted for 50 years and have struggled with this, but after watching your videos, I now understand it perfectly and can't wait to tackle it! Thanks Marly for the wonderful videos!
Marley!!!! Thank you so much for this video. It all makes sense to me now. I figured that I would have to adjust the tension, but to be able to use other type stitches, I never thought to do that. Also I never thought to change hook sizes. Thank you so much!!
Omg I tried and tried to crochet with the planned pooling yarn and it wasn’t working at ALL!! Then I watched your tutorial and 10 secrets video and it is totally working now!!! I’m so excited!! Thank you for taking the time thoroughly explaining about to work with this beautiful yarn!!!
This is sooo informative. I put pooling aside to work on my hat collection but never stop watching your videos! As soon as my LOT is complete, I will try again! You're patience is a virtue!!! :)
+Marly Bird question: when I try to use up yarn to reach the next color, I am noticing holes. I either, make loops larger, half double or semi puff. Should I chain 1 after these stitches? If I don't, where should I insert my hook?
For my blanket I did a swatch with the one color sequence to find the total # of stitches to moss stitch thru one sequence then I did multiples of that # +2 for a turning chain
I watched your other planned pooling video and was certain that I was going to succeed, you explained the process so well. Sadly I had nothing but failure with several yarns (known to work) and gave up. I watched this video this morning and I am ecstatic to say that I got two of those yarns to work within 2 tries!!! You are amazing and your videos are very easy to watch and you give awesome info! Thank you so much!!!
Very informative video. I didn't realize that you can go around the foundation chain. Also, you normalized my frustrations. It was good to know that you rip out your stitches often to make adjustments, which was my major source of frustration. Thank you Marley. Would love a video on pooling zig-zag pattern. Also, pooling in the round or on the Addi knitter, if you have that. Thanks again. 💕
Great video! I'm still trying to get the hang of planned pooling. This video gave me some good tips and made me aware of a few things that I've been doing wrong. I love Marly's enthusiasm.
You have helped me!! I have a large skein of yarn that my daughter fell in with, plus she fell in love with the yarn pooling method. I had about given up on getting success with this yarn, but I am now on row 22,started on row 3 at the beginning of the video. YAY!! Looks like she'll be getting a scarf for Yule!!
I am waiting for my new planned pooling yarns - Redheart and Premier - trying both - to come in the mail. I've taught knit and crochet and now do it for fun. This all looked like too much trouble...until you all came out with these new yarns...I am hoping that they make this a bit easier and more obvious. Also going to check out how to make some color charts - this is sooooo exciting to me - ready for a challenge. I can't imagine it - but what a trip if I could one day pull off a planned pooling sweater - instead of doing fair isle work. We knitters are always looking for new trends and challenges. More home décor and "weaving" type yarns (using linen stitch) so I can make all kinds of wall hangings - yarn needs to be wool...oh - you guys could make so much money if you can get us all going on this type of thing. Doing a weaving now with knitpicks wool - it's gorgeous...but I want to learn to do MORE of this type of thing. Guide us Marly!:)
thank you so much for the 10 secrets and sharing. i have had moderate success through trial and error. This video should make me a "pro" in no time at all!
Okay I've bought the yarn and as soon as I know I'm safe here in Redding California, Shasta county where we now have the carrfire going on I'm gonna give it a shot. I'm up late watching this because I'm watching news to see evacuation areas not us yet thank God , I've been finding more and more of your planned pooling videos tho so I should be good to go when I can 😁😉😋
Wow how have I never heard of working around the beginning chains before??? I remember Learning to work into the chains was such a headache when I was first learning to crochet!! Your Brilliant! Came to learn about yarn pooling but this tip alone is game changing lol
Your tips were fantastic. I have only tried once to do this and it took about ten rows for the pattern to settle in and for it to work. I'm going to start over with your tips, I'm sure I'll be able to make it work from the start next time. Thanks for your clear easy to follow instructions.
+Catherine Kilgour fantastic!!! I'm happy it helped. If you want to learn even more there are great tutorials on my website. www.marlybird.com/?s=Planned+pooling&submit=Search
WOW, thank you so much. I watched your basic planned pooling, and my scarf did not get argyle. When I started using your tips from this video (especially the counting of the stitches per colour AND the no-half-stitches rule) it showed right from the first few rows!
Sooooo helpful! 👍 Thanks heaps! 😆💕I have a sequence of 10 colours with very long stretches of yarn, so I'm crocheting a throw in trebles (double crochet in the USA) & wasn't sure what to do for turning chain, but I think you've cleared that up for me now.... thanks. 😆😆 I'll see how I go with all of your tips & tricks! 😉 Gonna check dye lots now & start!!!!Blessings from South Australia.💟 💕🐨
I was making a mistake in counting my stitches, and just realized it in watching this video- I was counting the chain st also, instead of just the sc- maybe this explains all the trouble I have been having! Going to try it One. More. Time.
Total newbie to crochet and picked up the colour pooling yarn not knowing what it was. This video is totally making me want to try it out. Thanks for a great tutorial. Now where is that hook? 😅
Mistletoe is difficult. I did a video live on facebook using it and you can see where even I had trouble. facebook.com/MarlyBird/videos/953426734762519/
+Anna Pinkham it was an accident. I was talking and just forgot. But, it goes to show that you _can_ skip the ch 1 as a was to get the right color. Obviously you see in the example that it all works since I counted stitches.
Wonderful Thank you so much I had the impression at least in the beginning that the chain space was omitted from time to time. Am I mistaken? Or is it on purpose and what would be the rational of it Beautiful tutorial
My question is this & am I the only one?, when I crochet around the foundation chain, my sticthes are messy, how do I "clear" that up? Yours is so neat. will continue to to try to do this, even thru the struggle...Love this...
Crocheting around the starting chain is a game-changer. Thank you so much for that! Crocheting into a starting chain was hands-down the only thing I disliked about crochet, and you just made it go away.
Crocheting around the chain in row 1 instead of crocheting into it is unnecessary and makes the first row of the work look super messy.. Do yourselves a favor and don't ever start your projects that way!
I got so stressed watching this video, but in a good way. I totally want to do this, but I will have to resign myself to it being a very complicated project. Thanks for the tips!
It is one of those projects that you just have to let the process flow and not over think it. The entire theory behind it is just placing the correct color in the correct place. I hope you do give this a try and find great success :-)
I noticed that on the last set of gray, while you are working the moss stitch, there was a chain skipped to get the three gray done. How do you work the next row if you don't have a space to insert the hook for a single crochet. Thank you!
I have completed my scarf thanks to your video. I have one question. Do I put a border on the scarf to cover the stitches crocheted around the starting chain?
Hi Marley. When you eat up some of your yarn to get the desired number of stitches, I noticed that you ch 1 & hdc. When I do a hdc, I leave off the ch 1 so that I don't have such a large space. With a child 1, it looks like I did a ch 2.
Tip instead of chaining with yarn you are going to pool with chain with another color like color you are going to use for your border and don’t fasten off leave it open ended then start with your first row and work as many color sequences as you want adding chains with 2nd color as needed in order to make your project as wide as you want it
I’m just starting out in my color pooling journey and am trying to achieve the argyle pattern. But my yarn has more color changes than yours and I cannot get it to work out right. QUESTION: how can you tell if your yarn will be more suited for argyle or plaid? None of the videos I’ve watched seem to address this issue. -Brenda
Thanks for this video! It is slowly making sense to me and I'm excited to give it a try. I have one question...is it possible to create a project narrower than the color sequence?
I want to use pooling to make a much larger project which will use several skeins. If I get the same lot number, will the pooling pattern match? I heard that different skeins may make different patterns. I'd hate to get half way finished and find out the patterns won't match. What do you think? Thanks for your help, Amy
Very informative video! Question -- in the first row, after your 'lock in' single crochet before you start the sc/ch around the beginning chain, do you do a chain stitch??? I've watched several times and just can't catch if you do or don't.
+betsstanford yes. You should, I forgot to do it because I was talking (I posted about it in the notes) but you should totally jump into the moss stitch pattern after that first sc :)
Could you please tell me “step by step” how to pool the red heart “mistletoe” yarn for Christmas? Trying to get it together and am struggling a great deal with it. Thank you.
I’ve been having trouble pooping with the papaya pooling yarn because it has 6 colors. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong 😭 can you help or have a video with 6 color yarn? Thank you!
Ooohhhhhhh, so using these techniques, one could use any self-striping yarn to achieve a self-pooling argyle look, not just the yarn Red Heart have designed specifically for pooling?
Is it possible to make a project of planned pooling with short coulour yarn one or two stitches.please answer me if possible show us a little sample thank you for advance.
Is there a way of looking at a skein of yarn in the store, and know if it would NOT be a good fit for color pooling? Or if it would absolutely work? I was given some yarn from a stash of a local lady, and it has some skeins of variegated yarn, but I'm unsure if it would work with it.
Can you say something more about turning into the first row of the pattern. I'm thinking that the first 'showing' of the sequence should be the chain that is on your hook before the very first sc? And is there a way to tell if you are starting the 2nd row at the right spot. I understand the counting of the color stitches, but when I start that second row how many stitches, of the beginning of the sequence color, should there be?
once you chain through the color sequence you will have the first color of the next color sequence on your hook. When you turn, and do the sc in 4th chain from hook, those initial skipped 3 chains will count as one stitch....then you work through the color sequence in moss stitch (ch 1, sc) around the chains...counting along the way. When you have the first color of the next color sequence on your hook...you will stop...pull out one full moss stitch repeat (sc, ch1) and that will be the end of your row 1. You now turn, ch 2 and work the moss stitch pattern in the ch-1 spaces. The ch 2 is a stitch and will be counted as one...that is why we work into it.
So, when you turn, does the ch2 count as a stitch, i.e. if your color uses 2 stitches, is that ch2 one of them? I seem to do pretty good, the video is great but I get to row 3 and I am off on being able to stagger the stitiches!
I did not know that Delightful lot number is different. I wonder why. I brought them at the same time. It makes no sense. Is there any reason that they got mixed up on purpose for the same dye lot?
+Lahib Alsamarraie If I did that it was purely by mistake. I tend to lose track of what I'm doing as I talk. Having said that, you could eliminate the ch1 on some stitches to get the correct color placement :)
Great tips, I'm sure some people will have "ah-ha" moments :-) I would like to say that it would be nice if the myth that the Argyle pattern and planned pooling are one and the same (and the buck stops there) would stop being perpetuated. Argyle is just one of numerous patterns that can be created once someone understand their colorway, counts and how their yarn "behaves". I see so many people stuck in this "Argyle is the only way to achieve planned pooling" mentality. They are limiting their skill-set and creativity. It's a shame. Color Stacking (striping - horizontal or perpendicular - is actually color stacking) , Color Flashing and other patterns of pooled stitches also create gorgeous projects.
+Debi Davies hi Debi! You are absolutely correct, Argyle Planned Pooling is not the only one. That's why you will notice I've put the word Argyle on the thumbnail image, to distinguish between it and future planned videos. I plan on doing other videos to show stacked colors, pooling in the round, as well as other stitches that create this beautiful Pooling look. I'm a huge fan of the process. Are you part of the Facebook group I mentioned in the video description? If not, you should be as I think you would love it. Many enthusiasts, like yourself.
Yes, I have been part of that group for quite a while. I'm one of the few who (repeatedly) point out that "Argyle" and "Planned Pooling" are not one and the same. It's like banging your head against a brick wall. Posts with other patterns have been deleted because they weren't recognized as planned pooling because they weren't Argyle. (not by Summer, she gets it and is happy to see other patterns) I know others who have actually left the group out of frustration and I am less active there now. It's sad. One woman in particular was incredibly knowledgeable and would have been an invaluable resource. Planned pooling encompasses numerous patterns and Argyle should be referred to as a pattern or by its name, not just as "planned pooling". And, please don't take offense, but you could have helped clear up a lot of the misinformation by addressing it in this video and by calling the pattern by its name (at all times) rather than just saying "planned pooling". You are a wonderful teacher and could open so many minds and help your followers reach new levels with their creativity and crochet.
+Debi Davies I hear what you're saying, believe me. The hard part on my end is that many crocheters do google searches for "Planned Pooling" not knowing there are many types/difference. So I have to make sure I use the term that will help people find the information in general. Then hopefully, they like what I do and how I teach and will come back to my channel to find other Planned Pooling ways as I post about them. When I label those videos I will use the general term "Planned Pooling" again. Why? Because I want to get results from google searches :) I hope you know I'm really doing the best I can without scaring them all away with over information (which I've been accused of giving...it's a double edge sword). Thank you for fighting the fight! I'm happy to have you spreading the word.
what do I do when the yarn for each colour is too long for a scarf or muffler? It's around 40 to 50 stitches for each colour. will it work, or should I change the wool?
Best "Secrets" ever for planned pooling! A must watch! Thank you Marly Bird! Excellent video!

I wondered how people got the gorgeous stripes to work w/ variegated yarn!
#3 just blew my mind! It makes perfect sense, and I'm definitely going to implement this into my nest project.

thanks for the tips!!!

Thank you for this wonderful video it really helps :-)
+Cecilia van der Merwe great. That makes me happy!
Thank you for posting this, I am going to try again, but I was wondering why you skipped ch1's in between some of the moss stitches.

Very good Miss Marly!
Oh, the project at 25:42 seems to be much bigger than the scarf you have been doing. Did you just do two or three colour sequences to make it wider?
Oops, just got secret 9, thanks
+Miss Bee thank you
I hope now I can plan pool now.
Wonderful
Thank you so much
I had the impression at least in the beginning that the chain space was omitted from time to time.
Am I mistaken?
Or is it on purpose and what would be the rational of it

I thought and wondered the same. I even rewatched the beginning to be sure. Hoping to see an answer!!
I saw the answer down below in another comment! It was an accident bc of talking.
@@timothyhelm437 thanks. That is what I thought but wanted to be sure. It did not seem to make any sense otherwise

Marly have you heard of the honeycomb pooling. I saw it on paid channel like Esey
Thanks for this video! It is slowly making sense to me and I'm excited to give it a try. I have one question...is it possible to create a project narrower than the color sequence?
Yes, you can half the color sequence and do a zigzag.

I want to use pooling to make a much larger project which will use several skeins. If I get the same lot number, will the pooling pattern match? I heard that different skeins may make different patterns. I'd hate to get half way finished and find out the patterns won't match. What do you think?

My only Tip to add is on when you do your Chain one before the SC make the yarn on your loop be the color of your SC.
Finished midwife blanket. Started pumpkin hat..kinda thin...but it's not cold here.

What kind of brigaded yarn can I use besides red heart? I don’t like to work with red heart. It’s too rough. I like softer yarn.
Is there a way of looking at a skein of yarn in the store, and know if it would NOT be a good fit for color pooling? Or if it would absolutely work? I was given some yarn from a stash of a local lady, and it has some skeins of variegated yarn, but I'm unsure if it would work with it.
thank U
Im interested in trying. I'm confused how to start after chained sequences
Yes! Thank you very much!
Happy to help.
So, when you turn, does the ch2 count as a stitch, i.e. if your color uses 2 stitches, is that ch2 one of them? I seem to do pretty good, the video is great but I get to row 3 and I am off on being able to stagger the stitiches!
Yes, ch 2 counts as a stitch...that is why we work into it. You also have to remember to count the beginning ch 3 color ;-)
I love ur project but I would like to know if u can do one on the zebra pooling thank U
+Ozzy Blare I used the zebra yarn in the video for the planned pooling poncho.
I have yet to find a sequence that would make a scarf in any rhss yarn
I did not know that Delightful lot number is different. I wonder why. I brought them at the same time. It makes no sense. Is there any reason that they got mixed up on purpose for the same dye lot?
+pmg1180 they could have come in different shipments.
Hi Marley how would you work panther pink panthers rose I'm having a problem trying to work it thank you
Marley I tried many times to work around the foundation chain and failed with the new yarn is it possible to do the sc
everyone talks about what to do if you want to go shorter but what if you want to go smaller?
as in half an argyle? Like a zig zag? I will be doing a video on that too.
Could you help me out? Does the chain 2 at the beginning of each row count as one stitch? Because if I count it as that my colours alwaysw stack :(
🖤
Not only did you tighten grays stitches you also didn’t do the ch-1 before the third gray stitch.
Marley, in some stitches you just made sc without the one chain in between. Why? Thanks. X
+Lahib Alsamarraie If I did that it was purely by mistake. I tend to lose track of what I'm doing as I talk. Having said that, you could eliminate the ch1 on some stitches to get the correct color placement :)
Is there another way to access your pooling knowledge without using Facebook. I don't have an account, nor do I want one.
about how long do you see the pattern
Do you have this pooling for lefty’s if not maybe soon

Thank you so much I can’t wait to start first I will finish what I am working on
Great tips, I'm sure some people will have "ah-ha" moments :-) I would like to say that it would be nice if the myth that the Argyle pattern and planned pooling are one and the same (and the buck stops there) would stop being perpetuated.
Why? Because I want to get results from google searches :)
I hope you know I'm really doing the best I can without scaring them all away with over information (which I've been accused of giving...it's a double edge sword). Thank you for fighting the fight! I'm happy to have you spreading the word.
what do I do when the yarn for each colour is too long for a scarf or muffler? It's around 40 to 50 stitches for each colour. will it work, or should I change the wool?
yes, you should change wool.
Thanks a lot, it's so nice of you to let me know.
Can you provide a list of yarn that does pool and does not pool
How do you get the zig zag look?🙂
