Aptera is built for two. It would make an excellent second car for your family.
Aptera has significant safety advantages over other vehicles. Complete with an anti-lock braking system, forward collision warning with the safety pilot package, two airbags, four external cameras, and parking assist. They are being designed to meet or exceed all applicable federal motor vehicle safety standards and use industry-standard testing protocols to ensure reliability and durability.
Their Formula One-inspired safety cell uses advanced Carbon Fiber Sheet Molding Compound (CF-SMC) that is ultra-lightweight and many times stronger than steel, paired with metallic front and rear subframes that absorb energy after impact. They will show their testing and provide Aptera’s safety rating upon passing a production vehicle through the full safety tests.

1.. I’m 76 years old, I’ve been waiting since 1962 when I designed an underground totally off grid home with solar energy and 100% (to my mind at the time) recycling, including methane gas production in the process of making fertilizer. It was a project, and I got an F. That was because it was ridiculous according to my teacher. No one uses prestressed concrete, no one needs to recycle, and the thought of recycling is Ludacris. There’s no such thing as solar energy and it’s not possible to capture of the energy from the sun. Methane gas is impractical, especially the process of recycling garbage and organic material. No one wants to live underground. And lighting the building through polished tubes to direct sunlight into the building from the surface, cannot possibly work, because as soon as it storms, the glass will break. Modeling air conditioning off of African ant hills is unheard of and unnecessary…… and the list goes on.
I refuse to redo the project, because I felt very certain that I was right. I sent the plants my father and he loved it. He said I was for seeing the future. That summer he brought me as a guest to Rotary to speak to one of the speakers on housing in the future.
    Number 2
I am alone, any room for my dog … at the moment, I have one that is only 8 pounds. I will have a very nice truck extended cab if I want to show for anyone.
    Number 3
What is another couple years at this point? If I’m alive, I’m going to have the time of my life living the dream, being part of the adventure, which includes inconveniences, in the new technology.
    Number 4
I try to keep up with technology. Grant it, I truly only go after knowledge that I’m going to be using or will contribute to my base on using what i have. I find it funny when people are amazed at how much I use my smart phone. When I got my hearing aids, I read that was an app that went with it. In the app I could control and adjust my hearing aids, and there’s a fine function. When I went in for my first tuneup on my hearing aids, the gentleman was surprised. I already had it, downloaded and familiar with its use. Old folks usually do not do this. I’ve tried to keep up with other electronics, challenging myself, and my reflexes. Xbox shooter games are excellent for eye hand coordination.
    Number 5
When I was a kid I was self-conscious. I thought everyone was talking about me. I got over it nobody cares, nobody’s watching me, no one is talking about me. Everyone is too concerned that somebody is talking about them. And the people that do talk about me do not count… there are usually Karen’s and Kevins, non-entities that are created to strengthen us and our character. There are there so that p the strong people stand out because they lift people up and they have the strength to help people carry their burdens on top of their own burden. They are the dark that creates the light even brighter.
I have select a model that fits my lifestyle, and where I live. I know I will have to charge it more often. Self charging in the winter time will be less than 50% of its capacity to charge. But I also plan to travel to the ocean to go fishing, one of my passions. It will force me not to drive, five and 600 miles a day. But stopping to see what I’ve missed all these years. Yet, the model I believe will be one of the last models they build it might not even be until 2026 before I get my Aptera. This is because I would like the option if I want to drive longer, I can on one charge.
The up side of not having my vehicle until 2025 and 2026 is there will probably be quite a few more charging stations built, and they’ll be easier to find. I’ve already stopped of the number of motels that have charging stations, which tickles my heart. I’ve even seen them in shopping centers in the largest cities. I do not expect to be free. When I’m at home, I plan on having solar and wind generators, this will lower my footprint when I’m home and charging. Otherwise using energy from the grid will put pressure on the grid, and it does leave a footprint. Going electric is not to save money, it is not to get away from buying fuel, it is trying to make less of an impact to our environment with toxic fumes.

Its modular constructed meaning everything is upgradeable, from the hub motors to the solar cells. The resale value is not an issue because owners won't need to sell it. It is designed for young couples and singles. That didn't hurt the popularity of the VW Beetle and it won't hurt the Aptera. Finally, Sandy Munro believes in it enough to invest in the company. Yes i would, even if i cant afford it in an eastern tn retail job. I can list at least one reason why, affordability. At $45k, its a mid level cost vehicle in regard of brand new vehicles. At 1000 mile range per charge at that price, i can travel the 15 mile drive to work and then home again for an entire month before having to recharge. Then theres the ability to recharge at home. Most the people i know who disagree with electric vehicles in this area is due to them having charging and starting issues during cold weather... but with my gas savings from 1 year, i could build a green house to store it while still allowing it to charge. And starting isnt an issue for the Aptera, it has a low power mode where it will stay running just to keep a set temp inside the cabin, hence always being warm and turned on. The big check for this would be charging from home, which would raise my monthly power bill... unless somehow get all my power from an already established publicly funded hydroelectric damn, which brings my power cost down insanely... hmm and at that 45k, you also get every attachment...including off road... no brainer bro

Ground clearance in the snow is a big factor in my area. Another is finding a mechanic that can do regular maintenance work. A 3rd reason is insurance cost. A 4th is software updates. What happens if the company goes belly up? How will updates be made?
As for its unique design, it would be less likely to be stolen because it would stand out like a sort thumb making it easier to find the thief. That would be a big plus. Another plus is that it might become a collector's item in the future.

States are quickly updating their motorcycle and autocycle laws. Arcimoto lobbying has been the single largest catalyst to this update. They have already gotten changes made to the laws in many states. A helmet or MC license is not needed for an autocycle with enclosed cabin or roll cage with harness. By pushing this short term transient issue the video has made itself obsolete within a couple years.
By the time an Aptera is actually in stock for you the real price for a carbon fiber vehicle will have to be reflected. It is the most expensive material you could use in a car body. Ask Boeing engineers.

What happens when you need an alignment ????? The standard equipment requires four wheels and would the design even allow an alignment with the motor and brakes in the tires ..and what happens when you go into a pot hole and bend the rim …??? Or need the tires balanced ..standard balancing equipment would not Handel a tire with a motor inside …could you even attach weights to the tire to balance it when you have a motor in the tire …looks like the rods attaching the tires could get bent if you hit a pot hole… the rods attaching the wheels look long and look flimsy ….and since the motors are in the wheels , if you did need an alignment it would be needed on an emergent basis since the motors inside the tires would be taking you in a drifting direction

I'll have to find a real review. The website is limited also. I always like to see the interior. It doesn't look like there are many interior places to put stuff. It looks to me like there is enough room in the back to put a couple of small luggage, grocery bags, suitcases or the dish for the pot luck or the outer layer wardrobe I keep back there for winter. It might be that passenger safety needs work. I don't see great structure for the passenger safety cage and it looks to me like the dash board will go right into the occupants knees. Knee damage was a big problem before auto crash tests. Also, for us enfeebled older types gull-wing doors (although uber-cool) may be more difficult for entering and leaving. At the very least I would need a chicken handle to pull on to replace the interior door structure I lean on to get out.

It is an interesting vehicle, and I agree with all your points on why not to get this vehicle. I didn't think about driving this vehicle we may need a motorcycle license since it only has 3 wheels.
It would not fit my needs though based on family needs, storage capacity, and winter weather in Northern Illinois. To me the Aptera is nothing more than a very expensive summer time play toy for single people. I googled the price on these vehicles and came up with 26,000 dollars at this time.
I wonder how the security is on this vehicle for possible thieves trying to steal this vehicle since it is so unique. Like you say, it really stands out from other 4 wheel vehicles and could be more of an attraction for thieves.
The Aptera looks more like an airplane design, but with no wings. Be interested in seeing more of the interior view of final product and what all the software does inside the vehicle.
How many cameras will the Aptera have far as different views the driver can see???
Will it have an auto cruise or super cruise for ease of driving long distances???
How much would the battery packs/solar panels cost if needing replacements???
How comfortable and quiet will the Aptera be if we did do long distance trips???
Does the Aptera provide adequate Heat and Air Conditioning based on weather???
I wonder what insurance companies think of this vehicle and getting license plates for it???
Which leads to next question, how safe is the Aptera should ever have an accident???
Thanks for this video. Take care.

Not suited for large families? That's the number one reason? Did that even need to be said? Just curious if you posted the same insights for motorcycles or two seat Polaris "Slingshot" vehicles? This is just a new, economical, clean energy option for getting around. Its not pretending to target families. As for the appearance, yes, it will draw attention but so would a Ferrari. When I brought my F-150 pickup truck to Germany, it was always surrounded by crowds of curious people. No big deal. I'll see how these hold up after the prototypes, but for the limited amount of local daily communting I do, it looks like a pretty decent alternative.

is it even out yet? also, personally, i never saw it as a purely solar vehicle so the solar being less efficent isn't a concern. the fact that it should be twice as efficent as a Tesla even when powered from a plug is a good enough selling point for me. the only real concern is the fact that it might be classified as a motocycle in one country and as a car in another. having a vehicle that can do 1000 miles(even if its 1000km in real world range at the end of the day) here in Europe might as well mean it can visit 5 different countries before it runs out of range. as for "but what is that" at the supermarket, idunno, might be interasting.

It is the efficiency that you don't get or even understand so I'll simplify it a bit. Aptera uses 100 watts a mile. Where I live, a kilowatt, at the bottom of the bill after all the fees and stuff, costs about a dime. This means without any contribution from the solar cells which add about 30-40 miles a day, the Aptera costs at most a penny a mile to operate. If you drive less than the total power you capture from the sun, all that driving is FREE.
You were cautioning folks not to buy a two seater if they're from a family with three or more members. The implication was that if you're in a family of five and all are drivers, you need five mini-vans so everyone can go in anyone's vehicle. I'll consider you a rich guy, so I'll make these SUV's you spec are probably v-8 4WD Escalades that get 13 mpg at a per-mile cost of $.27 which means you're paying 50 times the cost of going from A to B in an Aptera.
Even paying the full penny a mile needed without solar, if your family comprised six people, you'd only need three Aptera to transport the family to the beach and you'd still be banking a quarter for each mile of your camping trip. Except it would be better. First everyone would have more room. You'd only need one Aptera to provide electricity for the camp site, meaning you could use the other two Aptera to go off-roading while the hubby stays and watches a rerun of the Superbowl.
The actual, factual truth is that about 90 percent of the time, most vehicles are operated by and solely for the one passenger- the driver. Carrying around all that extra weight is like strapping on a full field pack and marching miles to the front. The extra-weight carried around all the time for very limited use - you know that most cars are parked 95 percent of the typical week, on average. (The sole driver scenario is 90 percent of that five percent of time the vehicle is actually in use.)
The main thing you get wrong about Aptera is it is not a vehicle to replace your Escalade or pickup truck ... it is a vehicle you add to your fleet that you use as much and as often as you can because you pay pennies for energy. Your Escalade, which would be worn out after four years now is not used nearly as frequently and at eight years old, it drives like new with less than 30,000 miles. You fill it up maybe once or twice a year, you know, for the day trip to the beach.

Thank you for the excellent video. I would add that if safety is your number one priority for a vehicle that your young family would drive, I would steer away from the Aptera. Aerodynamics are Aptera's main focus and having a very fuel efficient motorcycle. Thus it will only have two airbags instead of 6 to 12 like a Tesla has. Safety is Tesla's main focus. After speaking with Aptera's engineers, the motorcycle will not have any steel door side impact guards built in. My wife and teens will not be allowed to drive this cycle and it will only be used as a secondary city vehicle. Another reason that this may not be for everyone is that some will not get accustomed to the rough ride that the motorcycle has. The heavy in-wheel motors (80 lbs) and light overall weight of the vehicle (2000 lbs) will have an unsprung weight differential leading to a coarse ride. One should not get the Aptera if they want to take more than 100 lbs of cargo on their journey. The total payload capacity of the motorcycle is 500 lbs. So depending upon the weight of the passengers, this leaves little for cargo weight. Do not get the Aptera if your needs require the use of a small trailer. Lastly, I would not recommend the Aptera for the elderly driver for getting in and out of the car can be a little awkward. Unlike a CUV, where you step downwards to the ground, in the Aptera one traverses a lateral bulkhead before setting ones feet upon the ground. The Aptera may not be for those who live in hot sunny climates. When left to charge in the sun, the greenhouse effect by the windshield and door windows will create a greenhouse effect. The side windows are preacariously small to exchange enough hot/cold air before actually driving off. I would also shy away from this motorcycle if one is not mechanically inclined or not have certification to work on a 400 volt system. There will be no formal service centers around the country, and with your right to repair, you will also need to figure out why the vehicle is acting up yourself.

Interesting assessment. You might want to look a bit deeper. Side intrusion bars in the doors, crumple zones in the subframe to take loads around the occupants and batteries. HVAC system runs while parked and charging. The suspension is internal so the unsprung mass of the dampers, springs, and supports is removed from the wheels making the unsprung mass about the same. Do many people complain about the live axle, leaf springs and drum brakes on a truck? Looking forward to seeing the crash test results of the delta or production version.

    • @SilverShadow2LWB
      @SilverShadow2LWB Год назад

@@martinrieger5822 After talking with the Aptera engineers, there are no steel side impact bars. They felt that it would hamper the vertical opening of the doors because of the added weight. The front subframe crumple zone is mainly for front end impact. My biggest concern is the side impact hitting the door directly since it also does not have side curtain airbags. No airbag is going to prevent an SUV bumper from sitting on your lap. But I do realize that it is better than a naked motorcycle. Instead of me explaining it too you, you will trust the information of suspension design from a suspension design textbook. Just moving the location of the springs and shock absorbers does not change the unsprung weight. It just locates them to a better aerodynamic location. Trucks are not a good comparison for they are usually undersprung to increase the load carrying capacity. Ride comfort and tire traction is dependent upon the ratio of the unsprung weight to the stabilizing mass weight of the vehicle. In the Aptera, it is very inopportune. Will the Aptera meet the engineering goals of the designers. Absolutely. It will translate into a highly efficient motorcycle and that also gives excellent weather protection. But will the same aerodynamic shell give safety protection...probably not adequate. Like I said, like a 1965 Mustang convertible, it will not be one of the vehicles I let my 19 y.o. son drive. It too lacks adequate safety features such as airbags, ABS, traction control, roll over protection, and road stability. But they are fun to drive. I am trying to stay positive and hope that the Aptera engineers design better safety equipment into this cycle. They do listen to us....we now have DC fast charging capabilities.

Arcimoto accomlished excellent safety with the tried and true formula one racing harness and crash cage combination, no air bags needed. This has the standard highway commission 22G crash rating. The first serious t-bone collision has already happened and the victim walked away with only bruises, no air bag or helmet or safety gear of any kind was needed.
Tesla is an abomination of waste for over powered status symbols. It is no example to be used for any comparison. Each Tesla has enough materials in it to make four electric autocycles or 100 e-bikes. So is there a battery mineral shortage or a battery mineral squandering going on now?

    • @SilverShadow2LWB
      @SilverShadow2LWB Год назад

@@popeyegordon Thanks for the response Popeye. Who rated the Arcimoto with an Excellent category safety rating? I'd like to see the data. Both lack of finances and poor passenger safety protection are what brought their production down and let to bankruptcy. As you noted, many Formula One race cars have been designed for drivers safety with full 5 point harnesses and full crash cage. This is my point exactly, that a more protective cage would improve Aptera's safety. Airbags would not help in Formula One racing car since they are already tightly encapsulated by the padded cage, but in the case of many cars, anytime you have open space, multiple airbags to fill that empty space is the key. I am curious as to how fast and the size of the side impact vehicle was involved in the T-bone situation. Please enlighten me.
On your other point, I do agree that many EV's are overbuilt. People have the misconception that their vehicle needs to be fast vs efficiency. Any vehicle that accelerates faster than around 7 seconds 0-60mph is really unnecessary for everyday usage. Performance and Ludacris mode should be geared towards longer range. But the American public is often mislead by what should be priorities. If they are happy and safe, that is what matters. I really don't feel that most Teslas (M3 and MY) are power status symbols. They are practical sized cars that can hold 5 to 7 people, carry a large payload, and tow a small trailer or bike rack in one of the safest vehicular packages. Let be glad that we can all choose our favorite cars and colors as free Americans. I feel that new battery chemistries and use of hydrogen are right around the corner. Thanks for the discussion.

@@SilverShadow2LWB I thought the CPC moulded doors had the intrusion bars included because they revised the door position. I could be wrong, so many changes. The egg like shape will make the door stronger but not energy absorbing, carbon fibre is strong but will break catastrophically. Need to see the testing as this structure has not been used like this in a vehicle before. Moving the coil overs to the inside means a different design, just moving I agree, but... The upper link is not split to go around the damper and the lower stronger to support the damper and spring. This makes the arms are lighter. The dampers are now effectively upside down with the body connected to the structure with the rod moving and this has less moving mass. Outboard the damper body is connected to the lower arm so there is more unsprung mass. Inboard the dampers are shorter. Unsprung mass has been increasing with low profile tyres and increased wheel diameter, this also increases suspension harshness by losing side wall. Small diameter wheels and higher profile tyres reduces unsprung mass and mass moment of inertia improving whole vehicle acceleration and in the case of EVs affects range. Increases in unsprung mass have been dealt with way before EVs to deal with low profile road bling. Increasing the side wall height will improve ride and only affect turn in response. This all means the Aptera wheel has to be optimised much more than any other car. Even the motors were revised to be closer to the use case and improve efficiency, that meant the peak power went down and cruise efficiency went up.

I was going to put in a down-payment for one, but had one question for them. In my state (and many others) this vehicle is not classified as a car. It is classified as a motorcycle. Although your video touched on that, you didn't follow it to its ramifications. It does not meet US safety crash tests and in my state, you must wear a helmet while in it.
Also, Aptera's response to my question was wishy-washy, double speak... how they're trying to get states to change their laws about the motorcycle connection. It bothered me that they glossed over the safety question. The response showed even more avoidance using the magic words like, "Formula One-inspired safety cell." With its motorcycle based design philosophy, it is lighter because it doesn't have the crush zones and intrusion steel needed to meet four-sided US safety impact tests. It is a simple matter of physics and should be obvious to anyone... an 1800 lb vehicle being hit by a 6000 lb SUV or pickup truck will not fair well. Most of the pickup trucks around here would drive right over it and not even notice the bump.
I think Aptera should be more forthright and specify that it doesn't meet United States "CAR" safety impact tests. I probably would give them a pass and still get one... but not if I have to wear a motorcycle helmet! It would be a cool car to have to do the normal errands and drive up in the mountains. I'm in my 60's and probably keep the deposit on a Cyber Truck.
