Falling for Patema Inverted

- It's easy to fall for Patema Inverted. The core conceit of its duelling gravities make for a bewitching stage, as does the boy-meets-inverted-girl narrative playing out upon it. But it's director Yasuhiro Yoshiura's constant themes of togetherness - a theme that unites his entire library - that makes the piece something truly special.

You don't know how happy it makes me to see you use youtube captions in your videos so effectively. I feel like part of the video is missed if you don't have them on. It pains me to see other much larger youtubers who by all means should have... maybe not as robust captions as you, but at least official captions they put in themselves, especially when their videos are literally them just talking for 10, 30, or even more minutes on and on. In some cases where they do have official captions, you can see that the captions are made by a third party where the words written don't line up with what they're referring to or there are spelling errors that should not have been let through because they weren't vetted by the creator. It's endlessly frustrating to see only the auto-generated captions or poorly made captions given only as a second thought as someone who has trouble hearing the words people say and really need captions to read along. I am ever grateful to your willingness to put proper grammar, line breaks, pauses, and even aesthetic flourishes into your captions. Please never stop putting effort into your captions, even if only a small minority of your viewers will appreciate it. It truly adds so much to your videos that I just do not get elsewhere. Thank you.
It's all thanks to one of my Discord members, the incredibly dedicated and talented Fevol! I'll pass along your kind words :) I'm so glad to hear these subs mean so much!
Hey, thank you for your absolutely lovely comment, it really makes my day to hear that you enjoyed/appreciated the subtitles as much as I enjoyed making them. Will definitely be making subtitles for this channel for all future videos!
If you have any feedback on how I could improve the subtitles themselves, I'd love to hear it! I've only started making them the past year, and I'm still really looking to improve them wherever I can. Thank you again for your kind comment!
@@fevol_ As someone who hears reasonably well but used to watch TV with grandparents who really didn't... I know all too well how under-served the hearing impaired are.
You're doing valuable work.
@@fevol_ Hey, you inspired me to take time for my own captions. I'm typing them out as an .srt file. Question: How do you include italics/formatting in your captions? I can't get them to work.
@@pinkerhero Hello! As far as I know, there are two ways to implement formatting:
1) .vtt format [supports italics, bold, color, positioning and cue]: This is by far the easier of the two to work with, and doesn't necessarily require any program to make - though is pretty limited in what you can do. vtt is practically identical to srt, but you can use html-like tags to make certain words/phrases italic or bold, by simply enclosing them in or tags. Positioning is a tad more complicated, but there are some guides you can find online than can help (I personally recommend Mozilla's guide, but not every feature mentioned within it might display correctly in the video itself).
2) .ass/.ytt format [supports all of the previous + text sizes, shadows, other fonts, ...]: Making .ytt subtitles is a bit more tricky. First of all, you will need to install the amazing YTSubConverter program (available on github), that can convert .ass to .ytt subtitles - which you can then add to your videos. Make sure to read the README of the program, as it contains a lot of important information (such as what's possible, some example files + videos, and more)! To make .ass subtitles, I heavily recommend using either Subtitle Edit or AegiSub. As for adding formatting to the subtitles, well, there is a lot of syntax that you'll need to learn, but it's somewhat similar to .vtt (e.g., you make a subtitle bold by enclosing it within {\b1}{\b0}). Once you're done, you add the .ass file to the YTSubConverter program, and then you can simply import its output into RUclips. Note that when you add your subtitles to RUclips, don't change any of the subtitle text inside the YT caption editor: doing so will remove all the formatting you've added.
I hope this (mini)guide has helped - if you have any questions, please do let me know!
I only found out about this movie after being invited over for a movie night with friends. I honestly wasn’t prepared for how amazing it was, and it deserves way more attention than it’s gotten.
So glad you made a video about this! I haven't watched anime since like 2012 and I missed this one despite loving Eve no Jikan. Thanks to this video I'm going to look through Yoshiura's newer work as well!
Me too.
I love Sakasama no Patema!
It has this air of anxiety all throughout the film, in the real consequences of falling, and the fear of falling alone.
Really Shinkai-esque but a with a bit more spicy world building instead of the deep character exploration in Shinkai's movies.
It really is a testament to the quality of Patema Inverted that I was capable of watching it to the end given my immense fear of heights, and recurring nightmares of falling off the edge of the world. To be honest a lot of the watch time was spent with clenched teeth and peering through my fingers xD
Why would you fear falling off the edge of the world?
Are you a flat earther, so some 12th century noise norseman who thinks when sailing into fog you'll fall off?
@@stuartburns8657 well I don't fear that when I'm awake, but I have nightmares where the world has shattered into floating islands. I blame reading some weird fantasy books and playing too much WoW (TBC) when i was a kid
@@_keerp Fair enough, had to ask 🙏
This is the safest way to acknowledge our fears.
My body also reacts to heights but in an almost opposite way to what you talk of, being at the edge of a tall building excites me like very few things on this earth. I even find myself drawn to jumping off, not in a suicidal way but wanting to experience the freedom of flight. I did do the highest bungie from a bridge so as you can imagine that was fun for me, always wanted to wingsuit skydive but it's rather a expensive hobby.
time of eve is one of the best things i ever watched. it really feels like a foretelling of the future.
Blown away yet again. Amazing as always Joe
Absolutely beautiful review of a very neglected anime. Bravo!
Patema is the only anime that actually makes me dizzy! but it's heart is just so pure!
Patema Inverted is one of my favorites! I'm happy to see you review it. I hope more get to experience this amazing visual and spiritual vertigo trip.
Thanks for making these videos. You've introduced me to many interesting anime, & I dunno what I'd do without you.
I adore this movie, so happy to see you covering it. everytime I watch it I notice something new, but after a couple of times I got the feeling that some of the scenes should be inverted, and they would get so much better. would be interesting to see a re edit of this movie playing with the perspectives.
Hey Beatriz, just so you know on the blu ray there are special features with alternate cuts where some of the scenes are inverted!! Might be exactly what you're looking for.
@@BeyondGhibli that is so cool! I'll see if I can find it online.
Another great video. I didn’t know that the guy who made this also made Time of Eve, but that makes so much sense. I really enjoyed them both!
I checked out this movie and it was incredible. Thank you for finding so many incredible hidden gems. The terror of being inverted is such a strange concept beautifully captured in this film
You’ve made me fall in love with anime again. My friend passed away last year, I have felt lost, numb, and alone. My family doesn’t get anime. Your presence and voice has soothed my weary soul and you have made me laugh, cry, and made me rediscover a love thought lost. My thanks.
Damn... Sakasama no patema actually the first anime movies that makes me scared of looking up and then falling to a sky
I had almost forgotten about this movie, I remember watching it years ago and loving it! Great content as always!
another grand video. kudos, Joe!
love the environments of this movie. the art is amazing!
Finally. Someone talking about this film.
thank you so much for reminding me of this film! this beautiful video makes me want to watch it again :)
i watched it for the first time about 5 years ago. since the ending credits were sung in a language i didn't recognise (Esperanto), i decided to look it up. from there my passion for learning languages--more specifically as time went on, culture--was sparked, and my mind has really opened up since that moment!
i owe so much to Patema Inverted for the path of understanding i'm on now 💙
Hi,
I would like to share with you, that a French guy, me, watch your creation, and even if i miss a few words here and there,
Your narrative movie clip are some real poetry to my ears, so,
Thank you.
I wish you to do what you love, and keep sharing with the world.
From France with passion and respect ✌🏼😎🇨🇵
The inversion is scrambling my mind, just like people's perspective on life.
Patema is a film I remember fondly that I feel goes mostly overlooked. An interesting detail for me are the conveyor belts used by pedestrians, they remind me of Asimov.
That anime was amazing.
I basically screamed with excitement while watching Patema Inverted. My sister did not appreciate it.
I don't know if you've already watched it but I'd love to see a video on Heike Monogatari! I was absolutely blown away by the beautiful animation and deeply touching story.
Love the final line of the video. Thank you for reminding me that his works exist, gotta rewatch those.
The wonderful captions are fantastic and is one reason why I love certain youtubers
How did you do that?
I absolutely LOVE Patema Inverted, & just watched Pale Cocoon for this first time on Wednesday in an effort to fight off frustration as I (im)patiently wait for this director's newest movie, Sing A Bit of Harmony, to FINALLY debut online.
The Shinkai comparison is SPOT ON & one I've even made myself - although not as beautifully as you have.
Now please excuse me while I stay up all night binge-watching everything else this guy ever did! 😵💫😴
Just saw sing a bit of harmony in the theatre, it's really fantastic :)
one thing Paterma Inverted got right was the disorienting feeling of inverted gravity
well this video's a surprise to be sure but a welcome one, this is one of my favourite movies so i just Had to click as soon as i saw this pop up on my feed
I love your content it’s so well made.
finally someone who talk about tis movie!
I just watched this movie tonight. Been on my radar for awhile but was unsure. I watched it and was drawn in completely. The story and characters was so well built.
Phenomenal as always!
One of my favorite movies, so glad you made a video on it
beautifully pieced together as always.
I loved Patema Inverted when I was in 11th grade. Not sure how or why but it helped me get over a dumb break up haha. I love you for this video.
So happy you made this video. Such an underrated movie!
Beautiful, Joe. Great job on this one!
Your first video of this new year, been eagerly waiting for your next recommendation. Thank you for making such splendid videos
Ive been waiting for you to do this one
thanks for writing subtitles C: great video. some of the scenes shown kinda reminded me of the leap of faith scene from the animated spiderman movie
A movie I'll never forget. Thanks for covering this.
Thanks for making this
Man, you have this way of pulling memories for things that were a part of a time I had to lock away to survive emotionally, but doing so in a way where the bad stuff can stay behind. And I'm totally here for that!
Welcome back. It's great to have another thought provoking video. Thank you.
As always, Joe, another great video!
Excellent moving video as always.
I saw Patema Inverted but dont remember it as something excellent, you have convinced me to watch it again.
I remember really enjoying Patema Inverted, I should give it another watch :D
Great video!
Such endearing film has to be on my watchlist. Thank you once again!
Nice to see someone making a video about sakasama no patema
Thanks for the video! Beside his more known works like Patema and Time of Eve, Yoshiura's recent shorts for the Japan Animator Expo and especially the Mobile Police Patlabor Reboot one deserve recognition. I'm looking forward for Sing a Bit of Harmony.
beautiful video! you did it again!
Great video as usual!!!!
Got this as a gift from a friend like 4 years ago and never watched it. Its still in the sleve going to watch it tonight
I fell (hehe) in love with this movie after seeing it tonight. I saw that you had done a review, and I just had to see it.
You’re amazing. Such an inspiring video.
I’ve always seen this about, but never watched. I’ll rectify that this weekend.
Your script for this video is excellent.
This is so well narrated and put together, the pace is slower than I usually want in a RUclips video but it is captivating.
Another great video! Rented the movie on iTunes after this, got around to watching it today and I thought it was really good. Thanks for introducing it to me
Fine. You convinced me AGAIN to give this movie ( a movie which I've only heard of but never watched) a try because your reviews are that good! Good job and I KNOW that I will enjoy this movie! I love all sorts of underrated gems whether anime series or anime movies.
This anime was truly a masterpiece
Checked out the movie, funnily was already on my list and found it to be a very engaging concept. Towards the end of the movie I found myself drawing a map of the world to wrap my head around how everything fit together.
Ahh. My favorite anime movie. Underrated as always…
After watching Patema for the first time, I was amazed at how the story was so good. This was also the first time I ventured deeper into who made it. The other works are worth checking out, and i can't wait to see more videos about them!!
Besides Morgana in Persona 5, Patema is probably my Favourite Role from Cassandra Lee Morris.
This is literally the most underrated anime movie or all times
I enjoyed this video very much! I stumbled upon Patema Inverted when I was a kid and was enthralled by the imaginative story and beautiful visuals, though I think many of the deeper meanings passed over my head then. Your video makes me want to go and watch the film again with fresh eyes!
Also, I actually screamed when you name-dropped Gravity Rush at the end. I’m a huge Gravity Rush fan and it was a delightful surprise to hear it casually mentioned at the end of such a great analysis video. I know it was a joke, but I’d definitely love to see a Gravity Rush deep dive video from you!
I absolutely adore both Gravity Rush games! I may cover them in the future :)
I thought you hadn't uploaded anything for a month, but after searching out your channel I see that, although I am subbed, RUclips just didn't let me know of your new videos. And here you made one about one of my favorite movies.
Damn it you almost got me to tear again with that last line, not this time damn it XD. Another excellent video essay on this really UNDERRATED film (ovas...onas....ahhh japan you confuse me so much), I totally forgot I saw this, the premise alone is just sooo creative, probably outside anime films this was the last time a creative premise in anime impacted me, like there are no many super unique premise on anime shows or films lately, I remember the first time I saw something of this story and immediately wanted to see it just on the image of the 2 leads holding together upside down.
Oh, how lovely!
Damn another, great video.
you're my favorite youtube channel
I saw this with my niece at the cinema
This anime was so underrated wish we got to see more of it like a sequel
this seems so heartwarming, I think I'll check it out
Gotta say this essay really made me smile
very well made.
I was perusing Amazon for anime and I blindly bought this one and Origins , I think. You probably know it... the one where a boy scavenged for supplies in an abandoned mall and accidentally woke up a suspended animated/sleeping girl? Trouble happens and the boy gets powers and his hair turns white, turns into a tree, and girl saves boy. Etc..
Great movie. Great video :)
Ooooooo I loved this anime! So glad I bought a copy.
As always, a lovely video! Your videos have such a beautiful comforting, calming and self-reflecting aesthetic. As a side note, I love Gravity Rush, so I selfishly hope you will make a video about it. That and if you ever get a chance, the game Eastward.
A wonderful spoiler-free review!
This is why I love animation
I somehow never heard of Yasuhiro Yoshiura or his work and I feel like I need to seek them out now after watching this video
I love all the work of Yoshiura, since his time in Studio Rikka, and i'm waiting for his new "Sing a bit of Harmony"
GReat Video
I'm going to see it tonight! :) Time of Eve is my favourite of his. I'll cover it one day.
@@BeyondGhibli Good, same here
I must see this movie!
I love this movie
good conclusion!
I stumbled on this film almost by accident, but it quickly shot to one of my top faves.
(and not just for THAT moment I won't spoil; it left an impression like few other films have)
Not seen the director's other work aside from Time of Eve though, I'll have to track those down~
There's an english movie called 'Upside Down' (2012) with a similar concept.
You really have a way with words..
ok so i have some questions
spoilers ahead
1. who was patemas dad?
2. is she a royalty? a princess?
3. are there humans who survived the incident , living on the true normal surface? (why is everything so desolate and overrun with nature in the end?) and did the underground people not know about the reality?
4. some scientists , went unground to help make and artificial world for the inverted(age and his civilization) but why were some normal people(patemas people) left in the inverted undergrounds?
can't help but will them together ❤️
Time of Eve is one of my favs!
i want to watch everything you talk about, everytime
I almost forgot about this movie.
Not many people discuss this movie. 👍 Instead, they rave on about suzume bs. I think I watched Patema 10 times already. By the way, Ghibli is pronounced [gibli], it's an Italian version of an Arab term for a desert wind, h is there for a phonetical buffer
i watched this movie when i was a kid
god, i forgot about both Patema Inverted and Time of Eve... they're both masterpieces...
I love Ghibli
