    Lyrics:
You walk out on the high wire
You’re a dancer on thin ice
You pay no heed to the danger
    And less to advice
    Your footsteps are forbidden
But with knowledge of your sin
You throw your love to all the strangers
    And caution to the wind
And you go dancing through doorways
Just to see what you will find
    Leaving nothing to interfere
With the crazy balance of your mind
    And when you finally reappear
At the place where you came in
You’ve thrown your love to all the strangers
    And caution to the wind
    It takes love over gold
    And mind over matter
To do what you do that you must
When the things that you hold
    Can fall and be shattered
Or run through your fingers like dust

Still plays great…yes, but this era was MK at his absolute best. Made it look so effortless. I’d go and see him in a heartbeat tomorrow, but he played all the songs so much better then than now. That’s not a criticism. That’s just life, and how things are when you get older.

I heard this for the first time this morning and in 2:54 I began to think It reminds me the "Private Dancer" verse of Tina Turner. I Googled about It and found out that "Private Dancer" was composed by Mark Knopfler for the "Love Over Gold" álbum, but was ceded to Tina Turner as Mark realised that a female voice would suit better on It... How curious.

Super botty on that acrobat girl! Getting back to Dire Straits, this is their best song, and I love the Chet Atkins solid body nylon guitar sound. If I had a time machine I would go back to this concert every night for a month, even though Knopfler's jacket is quite funny!

    • @MarvaGrossman
      @MarvaGrossman 7 лет назад +1

While I agree with the sentiment, very much, I must say that the logistics of that would be problematic. You would either need 30 or so tickets to this performance, which would get expensive, or you would need to find hiding places inside the venue for 30 of you. ...Hmmm. There may be a nice little SF story in that, actually...
It's probably best that I DON'T have a time machine. If I were to meet either Mark Knopfler or Hal Lindes when they were close to my age, I may not be able to resist the temptation to, um, be a stereotypical groupie... And that would be a mortifying experience in the very likely event that I fail, and very difficult to explain to my husband in the very unlikely event that I succeed.

    • @mc2594
      @mc2594 4 года назад

Hardly likely to have a giant lardass really is she if you think about it?
also thinking about it a time machine could only produce 29 other selves on the last ticket to this concert from one to two to three selves ect up to 30 on the last visit back, it wouldn't produce 30 KRAZEEIZATION
's to require 30 tickets as the concert runs in normal time so it would be the same ticket purchased in a repeat loop 30 times, assuming the ticket sales office sold one ticket once to one person they wouldn't notice the repetition as long as the time machine controls could cope without having to queue behind yourself to buy the same ticket 30 times.
The problem really would be the repetition itself, seeing as there would be no additional input from seeing the performance a second time because the second time would still be the first time ad infinitum unless your memory held the previous visits which is doubtful. The atmosphere of once is the only time you'd be aware of so the theory is not backed up by practice beyond deja vu x30 in one performance.
The Camera really is the closest to a time machine there is, recording time is possible and it can then run back, repeating time itself would be as self defeating as would a large butt on a Trapeze be, or similar at least.

Unusual but so close to my heart.
Not too many love-songs in history of popmusic are just mere descriptions of a woman’s strength, instead of admiration of some sort - apart from Billy Joel’s. And Knopfler is in his diction not even sugarcoating it up but just ‘informs’. When it comes to musical texture and complexity of form, this hidden gem in his oeuvre wins from any other love-song, even his own.

Why this song was not included in the bluray release I still don't understand. What a shame.

The fact that part of the chorus sounds similar to Tina Turner's hit Private Dancer makes me wonder which came first, this song, or the original demo of Private Dancer. (if there was a demo by Dire Straits)
Im guessing Private Dancer would have came first, even though this is the title track of the album.
