When I was 22 I was working with street children in Ethiopia. One day a social worker and I were driving down south near the Kenyan border to visit another project there. In the car was just this one tape from Dire Straits with this song on it. The bumpy ride would take us 12 hours and we listened to this song probably a hundred times, watching the most gorgeous landscapes and sunsets I’ve ever seen. Most beautiful time of my life in the most beautiful country with the most beautiful music. I miss Africa so much...
Good man and I envy your experience from every angle! If I were in your shoes I would have chosen the same song. IMO the most underrated guitar solo ever if it is not spoken of with equal respect as David Gilmour's masterpiece "Comfortably Numb".
Ironically, I'm in West Africa, listening to a song about the Spanish City fairground, in my hometown "when we were kids"... it's mostly gone now, the main building is still there, and it still kinda looks so pretty to me, like it always did... I miss Cullercoats to Whitley Bay.
If you find yourself coming back to this song, it's by no mistake, you have good taste in music and know a masterpiece when you hear one. Definitely the best Dire Straits album!
Yes! That's part of the brilliance of this song... it's as much an elegy to childhood lost (MK often visited the real amusement park and Spanish City at Whitley Bay) as it is a romantic ballad. There's an amazing balance of edgy, almost ominous, against the blissful recollection of a bygone era and one's own fleeting youth. Tunnel of Love is an absolute masterpiece, and serious competition to Sultans, Brothers in Arms, Telegraph Road, etc. as MK's signature achievement. In fact, if we were voting on emotional content and depth, I would give the edge to Tunnel. It's remarkable.

Huuuhhhh, how far back was that you say ohhh waaay back in the day. 1978-79-80-81-82-83. This song is a timeless masterpiece!!!! Mark Knopfler and the boys are killing it on this album!!!
Hey bud from Australia this song has a lot of guitar emotion which unfortunately will never see or hear again so we have to let the new generation hear no matter how much they hate it because one day they will appreciate this song they forgot about!!!😊👍
There was just something about Making Movies. It was easily my favourite of their albums, even with individual tracks from Communique, Love Over Gold and Brothers in Arms sticking out more in my memories.
The outro is the most beautiful, deeply emotional guitar work Mark has done in his celebrated career. Yes, it surpasses Sultans of Swing. It deserves to go down in history as one of the great, all-time guitar solos. I’m guessing Tunnel of Love just didn’t get the radio play of Stairway and some of the other iconic songs. Mark channels feeling through his instrument; the outro is even more powerful and heart rending than his very powerful lyrics.
The sound Mark Knopfler manages to squeeze out of his guitar is not of this planet. I've known his music for more than 40 years and it still amazes me.
The guitar solo at the end is one of those rare times when an electric guitar sounds as mellifluous as acoustic guitar & is not used just for fast play. And yes, its a superb solo, long enough to have its own identity and to be savoured nicely.
@@sibro4747 dude, we know Comfortably Numb is another masterpiece. But why do you have to bring it up here when the OP is clearly only appreciating the guitar play in this song? Can't you not feel negatively about things?
I agree. There's something about the length of this song that makes it required to finalise the masterpiece. The drums kicking in at the intro takes you away
One of my favourite songs. So good but it also makes me feel sad for some reason. Even though the song is upbeat it feels melancholic to me, as if something important has been lost. That outro is one of the best guitar solos of all time imo.
I was listening to this song with my dad every single morning for a month in a countryside while we were going to the work unfortunately I lost him last year in a very young age every time I listen to it it reminds me of him
What has been lost is "time" my friend...Something none of us will ever get back.So we always come back here for memories ,coz even though we've lost time, friends and family etc. The music will always carry us back. Reminiscing whilst floating across notes, harmonies, vocals, drums and guitars. Knowing we will always be safe and feel loved if we just hold on to this brilliant ,classic , (which will always remain timeless) so it can continue to carry us all the way across the universe and the heavens where we almost kiss the time and the people that we once lost. X

10/22/20 I'm 62 years old now,and I've been a fan since the first time I heard skate away. From then until now, no one compares to Mark. So much emotion. And he makes it look so easy. Damn.
The guitar solo at 5:57 is perfect for the lyrics of the song. It's like getting on a roller coaster at that moment, smooth at the beginning and intense at the end. Magnificent!
That guitar solo does to me something which makes me so full of emotions and I am not quite sure how to describe that feeling. No other solo that I've heard yet in my life does that! Also, the mellow singing of Sir Mark Knopfler right before the solo sets it up! SO GOOOOD!
Fellow desi guy here. First heard dire straights 1 year back. I've been listening to the same songs since day 1 everyday and I still can't get enough of it. Mark knopfler is really something else.
@5:05 the fall from a height like a mountain.... Mark is the king of emotion.. reaching a mountain in between a song and than suddenly slow it down to the bottom and than bring it back again... Mark is phenomenal. Salute to you master. even in 2025 i aam listening to this master piece of the mater class player.
As i sit here typing this, it is April 2020. I am 45 years old. I 1st heard of Dire Straits when i was 10 years old back in 1985 by my father. Very quickly, I was so obsessed with them. If you named a song i could tell you how long it went for, what album, what track number, & how many (if any) different versions (such as live) their were. Why? Emotional content. Because Mark Knopfler played/plays with emotional content, because i listened to it with emotional content. It is 2020, & nothing - and i mean NOTHING - grabs my heart as much as Mark Knopfler does!! Laugh at all me all you want, i don't care. But, like when i was 10 years old, at 45 i STILL wanna grow up to play like Mark Knopfler does. Nothing has moved me as much as his music. Nothing! I wish i was good enough to play guitar like Jimi Hendrix, Slash, Joe Satriani, .... but all i wanna do is just play like Mark Knopfler does. Naturally. Not forced. I STILL love it, & it STILL moves me, just like it did 35 years ago when i was 10 years old. Thanks for 43 or so years of great, invaluable music!
Michael Eggleton Absolutely agree with you. Best music ever. Tunnel of love just proves your point. I wish that someone could make music like this today.

5:45 - the world's greatest guitar solo forever - but within that too, at 7:07 the greatest moment in universal rock history, the top of Mount Everest, so the peak of the peaks! Anyway, Tunnel of Love forever, and Dire Straits forever!
Every time I listen to this song, I love it a bit more. My dad didn’t stick around and had a drink problem. He was a bit like Mark in some ways and this song heals some of the wounds I have from that.
@Jerzy Ramon As soon as he says when were kids. This is the first time I ever saw the video and heard the studio version. For me this song made Alchemy live extra special, well, extra extra special.
I saw Dire Straits play live during the Brothers In Arms tour at Red Rocks Amphitheater in Denver, Colorado. No one opened for them, they played for five to six hours, only took two breaks, played their hit songs, only played a small fraction of their music and sounded phenomenal. That was one of the greatest concerts I've ever been to and I've been to many concerts, most of them great.
Why does the solo at the end rarely get mentioned in top ten lists of great guitar solos? It’s one of the best solos ever performed in my option. It’s certainly the most beautiful!
It’s hard to compete with solos like the ones in Stairway to Heaven and Comfortably Numb but this one has a certain charm that I don’t feel weird putting it up there with the best

Huuuhhhh, how far back was that you say ohhh waaay back in the day. 1978-79-80-81-82-83. This song is a timeless masterpiece!!!! Mark Knopfler and the boys are killing it on this album!!!
Me too!!🤙🏾
Pure Masterpiece with no Age.
Hey bud from Australia this song has a lot of guitar emotion which unfortunately will never see or hear again so we have to let the new generation hear no matter how much they hate it because one day they will appreciate this song they forgot about!!!😊👍
Just takes you to a better place
*I gotta say, this is honestly a 10/10. Everything just falls into place PERFECTLY.*
There was just something about Making Movies. It was easily my favourite of their albums, even with individual tracks from Communique, Love Over Gold and Brothers in Arms sticking out more in my memories.
The best song they wrote in my humble opinion, shit hot😂
You are wrong my friend.

My thoughts exactly. That guitar solo is almost painfully beautiful and as you say, deeply emotional. Just stunning.
I so agree!!
Without a doubt the best guitar solo ever written. I will never get tired of it.
His 'touch' is supreme - as though he's reaching out himself and tickling your eardrum through the speaker.
well said my friend
The sound Mark Knopfler manages to squeeze out of his guitar is not of this planet.
I've known his music for more than 40 years and it still amazes me.
Same ❤
The guitar solo at the end is one of those rare times when an electric guitar sounds as mellifluous as acoustic guitar & is not used just for fast play. And yes, its a superb solo, long enough to have its own identity and to be savoured nicely.
Agreed! The live version from Alchemy is something else ❤️
Have you heard of Comfortably Numb by any chance?
@@sibro4747 dude, we know Comfortably Numb is another masterpiece. But why do you have to bring it up here when the OP is clearly only appreciating the guitar play in this song? Can't you not feel negatively about things?
sometimes i skip right to the solo part, pure music
I agree. There's something about the length of this song that makes it required to finalise the masterpiece. The drums kicking in at the intro takes you away

Damn right she does
My Grandmother's granddaughter loves this also! ;) lol :P
One of my favourite songs. So good but it also makes me feel sad for some reason. Even though the song is upbeat it feels melancholic to me, as if something important has been lost. That outro is one of the best guitar solos of all time imo.
It is the same for me!
Not to mention the piano
yes. the same for me. now i know it was the childhood that is lost...she looks so pretty to me...but i can't remember her face.
5:50 - 7:20. One of the best solos on the guitar

The guitar solo towards the end is arguably THE BEST guitar solo Ever played. I never get tired listening to it ❤️❤️❤️

Fantástico, me encanta este tema, creo que es lo mejor que han hecho los Dire Straits. Tiene un comienzo espectacular y un punteo final de guitarra precioso. Simplemente "IMPRESIONANTE".

His choice of notes and melodies are quite unique and beautiful
True ! I noticed that when I was a teen, back in the 80es !

The greatest Dire Straights song ever 🎸
Every time I hear this song, it transports me to a different place and evokes a sense of nostalgia. Thank you, Dire Straits, for creating such a timeless classic that will continue to touch the hearts of music lovers for generations to come.
Made in 1980. This year no artist or band will beat this tune, god damn beautiful!

I'm 62 years old now,and I've been a fan since the first time I heard skate away. From then until now, no one compares to Mark. So much emotion. And he makes it look so easy. Damn.
A song to be grateful for.
After all these years this song can still bring tears to my eyes like no other.
The guitar solo at 5:57 is perfect for the lyrics of the song. It's like getting on a roller coaster at that moment, smooth at the beginning and intense at the end. Magnificent!
Yesssssss
One of the best guitar solos ever tbh, it's so emotional 💜💜💜
@@justchilling177I agree🥰🎸.
as good as Fuolornis Fire Dragons
Absolutely one of the best guitar solos ever!
and the drummer.......wow! they are all so talented!

Mark is an absolute poet.
I can’t describe why but this song is just a masterpiece!

No description necessary - it's a masterpiece because IT IS! 😊
to me, on technical level. it has so unpredictable notes. and I love that
Sounds great even today in 2022. So many great memories from the eighties.
I discovered this song in 2020, but I have many memories too :)
🤘🤘. I'm a fan of their debut album which is more raw but this album is sth amazing, this and telegraph road are amazing rock operas.

@5:05 the fall from a height like a mountain.... Mark is the king of emotion.. reaching a mountain in between a song and than suddenly slow it down to the bottom and than bring it back again... I was never a fan when younger but as I got older and older I began to appreciate the talent and genius.
Same here mate

Why would anyone laugh at you over your love for Dire Straits/ Mark Knopfler? I know I wouldn't.
same here i first heard sultans when i was 4 my dad had a dire straits cd when thats how u played songs in the car im 15 now i still love em and im the lead guitarist and singer for a dire straits cover band and let me tell you ive played loads of artists songs and it feels like a chore but playing dire straits it soo fun i stayed up all night playing one night and i woke up sleeping with my guitar. the knopfler/straits sound is so unique

They played 2 hours that night....standard for that tour.

Why does the solo at the end rarely get mentioned in top ten lists of great guitar solos? It’s one of the best solos ever performed in my option. It’s certainly the most beautiful!
I'm not sure which solo praised at the time, but I *have* to believe it was that one.
