This brought back great memories of my ride-alongs with my steel hauling dad as a kid...and also serves to remind me of why I pull a van now! Happy belated Veterans Day to you.
Back in 64 I had just loaded a 40 foot trailer with bags at the Hamilton Docks. I was right in front of door 10 and the door on the opposite side of the door was also open with a north wind blowing across the bay in one door and out the other. I just got the tarp rolled out ready to start tying ropes when the wind got under it and lifted it off the trailer. I had a hold of the tarp at the back of the trailer and for a minute I thought I was going sailing across the lot over the cab of my tractor. What fun huh? ps. That;'s when tarps were heavy canvas not like the light tarps you work with today.
Sorry Dale, I couldn't stop laughing when the tarp blew off, all though, I got to see what you did to help correct the problem, great video, thanks again for the training that you are giving to everyone on youtube, I can't speak for other people, but I appreciate every video you make. I start truck driving school in January, going to apply to Maverick first. Thanks again.
Yep, been there and done that! thank goodness you only had to roll one tarp and not both. They get a lot heavier the second time around. Pulled up on a preload of sheet rock in the wind, they use just enough bungee cords to hold the tarp on. Looked like a parachute deployed. That was one of those "I love my job, I love my job, I LOVE MY JOB DAYS".
Dale a quick tip for tarping in high wind just hook the front of the tarp down with one bungee on each side the as you unroll the tarp take a small rope tied to your load bar or something as heavy and tie it to two of the D rings on each of the other corners let it drop so it's just touching the ground it has work for me for years
Strangely a therapeutic video today Dale, ha. In other news, I'm off to TMC orientation this weekend for a Monday start. Though Maverick is awesome in it's own right, I decided to go with too much chrome. Hope to cya on the road someday.
tarp in 60-70mph winds an then you'll learn it or quit. but if you could park your truck/trailer in the nose in the wind does help as well as bungee those corners first before you unroll the tarp, then when you do tug it tight fasten those corners rope on the corners doesn't allow the stretching of the rubber rope bungee. 4-5' rope in each corner pulled tight as in doing a Truckers hitch knot is simply the best thing that works best always...an sure does take a lot less time doing it once than having to catch sails in the wind. just my .02cents worth. C-ya! :) nice once your finally got it done though. :)
Another great Video Dale, Im going to buy my own truck tomorrow, Im making the big jump, maybe our path's will cross and I will buy you dinner. Be safe and Me and my family wish you and your family a happy Thanksgiving.
Slant those front an rear access left over tarp hangs...it makes for better fuel economy too. as the on coming wind pushes the tarp down & no it will not flap or have a cup opening getting under either.
If I was Maverick Trucking I think that I would use those last couple of videos you made as training aids when they are instructing new drivers how to tarp.
I made a ratchet tool out of a piece of rebar and a wooden handle that I carried in my back pocket when I strapped, so I could pretty much secure them as I went. Then just do my walk around with the bar and snug them down.
I remember using that bar and it spun down one time and busted me right in the head lol,,I love watching these seeing how wrong I was doing it,,I made it much more difficult than it should have been.
i noticed that you use the rub rail as a securement... to my knowledge that is illegal where i am.. but we use the 3/8 chain straps as apposed to the bear claws.. or J hooks... We normally hook the straps like you do with your chain binders
Hey brother, I know this video was posted a long time ago, but I was wondering how you know how much tension to put on your straps. Love your video series, thank you!!
It's rated to hold a certain amount of weight, about 4000. DOT as far as I understand it, only cares about the ten foot rule and condition of equipment.
I was screaming the same thing....there was another Maverick there and his load was tarped as well. I think it really boils down to what the customer wants, since they pay extra to have a load tarped.
The aluminum is extrusion billets. The manufacturer heats up the billet and runs it through the extrusion dye to make different shapes out of the aluminum. You tarp to keep the road dirt or salt off the billets. Dirt and salt does a number on the dyes.
no belly wraps? You see the guy in the white International he pulled out no tarp, he probably said hey look at Maverick over there tarping his load LOL!! Some guys would rat other guys out for not tarping, be careful of the other Maverick Drivers when you got like 20 miles to go sun shining and your like I am not tarping this. I did it all the time snuck things around no tarp, road salt is the deciding factor any chance of road salt tarp goes on. We did not get paid for tarping.
+Mark Nairn If you didn't see them, then No. Sorry you did not get paid for tarping. That would be no fun at all then. I don't worry about other Maverick drivers. I wish they would give me their address when they drop a dime. This way I can mail them a new one. I have had to ask drivers NOT to help because they are to bossy. Just something we have to deal with somedays. I don't lose any sleep over it.
I don't know the English word, but we don't flatbed that much, most commodities that you tarp are hauled "unter Plane und Spriegel" in Germany and neighboring countries, in English "under tarp and ???" ('hoops' maybe the English word - an iron/alu construction that makes the continously tarped trailer look like a van?) I really can't understand why you are still doing so much hard and time-consuming flatbed&tarp-jobs in America, as there are very convenient alternatives for most of the products I've seen on your flatbed in your videos.
+Ørden Størn We have a few of those, but they restrict some of the loads we can carry. Plus we get paid less when we use those. Oh well. Thanks for the post.

Nice video. Probably one of the first showing the whole process of tarping. Thanks.
I have one showing the tarping of a lumber load, hanging on a wire. My favorite place.
Sorry Dale, I couldn't stop laughing when the tarp blew off, all though, I got to see what you did to help correct the problem, great video, thanks again for the training that you are giving to everyone on youtube, I can't speak for other people, but I appreciate every video you make. Remember my name when you apply. I am glad to hear you got as much enjoyment watching me tarp as I had tarping that load.
Remember your name? Just about every morning my wife asks me if I watched the Dale training video for the day.
Lol
Keeping you cool and getting the job done, well done.
I could only laugh when that stuff happens. No point getting angry at the wind. At least that is what I tell my kids when the wind is breaking.
Yep, been there and done that! thank goodness you only had to roll one tarp and not both. They get a lot heavier the second time around. Pulled up on a preload of sheet rock in the wind, they use just enough bungee cords to hold the tarp on. Looked like a parachute deployed. ROFL, that's exactly what I say.
Dale a quick tip for tarping in high wind just hook the front of the tarp down with one bungee on each side the as you unroll the tarp take a small rope tied to your load bar or something as heavy and tie it to two of the D rings on each of the other corners let it drop so it's just touching the ground it has work for me for years
Thanks, I did end up using bugees to pin the front corners which helped a lot. I will remember the weight next time.
If that doesn't show the ups and downs of flat bedding I do not know what will. Well done Dale.
Thanks
You got that rite!
Well, you got some extra exercise....thats always a good thing! Tarping job looked nice at the end.
Yes, it was all good in the end.
Thank you Sir. Ur my idol. I’m good with Roehl for training.
NOW THATS WHAT I WANT TO SEE IN YR VIDEOS #WELL DONE DALE #TARP ON!!!
Another satisfied customer.
Strangely a therapeutic video today Dale, ha. In other news, I'm off to TMC orientation this weekend for a Monday start. Though Maverick is awesome in it's own right, I decided to go with too much chrome. Hope to cya on the road someday.
It may happen. Good luck on your adventure. Be safe.

I tarp in the wind very differently now, this was early on in my career.
Another great Video Dale, Im going to buy my own truck tomorrow, Im making the big jump, maybe our path's will cross and I will buy you dinner. Be safe and Me and my family wish you and your family a happy Thanksgiving.
Good luck in your venture. May your thanksgiving be a great one.
thank you dale.
Damn, I'm stealing your strapping system lol....way faster than what they taught me in load securement...
It's the way my trainer showed me. Faster for unsecurment as well.
LMFAO.......brings back memories.........trying to tarp in the wind......good luck!!
Slant those front an rear access left over tarp hangs...it makes for better fuel economy too. as the on coming wind pushes the tarp down & no it will not flap or have a cup opening getting under either.
I would need to see a video, I am more of a visual learner.
I too am a visual learner check out your brother of a different mother here: Rob Bolin Trucker Rob, he pulls f/prime. Does facebook,& YOU Tube.
If I was Maverick Trucking I think that I would use those last couple of videos you made as training aids when they are instructing new drivers how to tarp.
Thanks, I appreciate the kind recommendation
+Dale Clay do you have a video on folding tarps?
Yes, it will be showing up next week. I show how i fold steel and Canvas tarps.
I made a ratchet tool out of a piece of rebar and a wooden handle that I carried in my back pocket when I strapped, so I could pretty much secure them as I went. Then just do my walk around with the bar and snug them down.
You make it look so easy. :-)
Sometimes though it is crazy quitting hard.
Thanks am new to flatbeds. What are the most common products you can use chains on? Thanks again
Steel is the big one. Anything that can be easily damaged we use straps or a combination of chains and straps depending on the load.
Nice work dale very impressive.
Are you a company driver or owner ops?
Company Driver for J.B. Hunt in Washington state
I was in Colorado couple days ago trying to throw straps in the wind was terrible
Ya, always fun when the wind blows your straps off that you just through over a load.
I remember using that bar and it spun down one time and busted me right in the head lol,,I love watching these seeing how wrong I was doing it,,I made it much more difficult than it should have been.
+Bill Ness I think we all do things the hard way sometimes.
Good work hand!
I have a good friend who is working for Senn Trucking in Newberry.
are there some good lightweight tarps that he can buy?
+johnnecron Probably, but I don't know any specific place. I get mine from the company I work for.
Also looks like its easy to slip and fall out, especially if its wet.
Yes sir. That we not be fun
i noticed that you use the rub rail as a securement... to my knowledge that is illegal where i am.. but we use the 3/8 chain straps as apposed to the bear claws.. or J hooks... We normally hook the straps like you do with your chain binders
+Ravenblade94 Completly legal everywhere we travel. There is some interesting differences in the hardware available for the work we di.
Thank you
Hey brother, I know this video was posted a long time ago, but I was wondering how you know how much tension to put on your straps. Love your video series, thank you!!
On steel, as much as I can. Which is the case for most things shipped.
Would it be possible to lay a length of your chain across the tarp to hold it while you secure it...? Just sayin'
I suppose it would but it's quicker to use a bungee.
Try doing up a 40ft curtainsider on a windy day Dale that can certainly make your life interesting
Interesting is good.
not when interesting means your feet leaving the ground without the aid of wings
Wings are over rated ;)
+Dale Clay so are windy days enjoy your weekend Dale
Dale, I would have thought the Fella in the Flatbed opposite would have offered to Help, he could see you where struggling, but just drove off!
+Barry John Lunn No worries, I strange and prefer to do it alone.
Im new to this so i am curious. Why did you hook to the rub rail? Isnt that illegal?
It's rated to hold a certain amount of weight, about 4000. DOT as far as I understand it, only cares about the ten foot rule and condition of equipment.
Why did the other truck on the right didn't have to tarp, and he had the same load u had?
I was screaming the same thing....there was another Maverick there and his load was tarped as well. I think it really boils down to what the customer wants, since they pay extra to have a load tarped.
Dale, I feel your pain, be there done that, time and time again. Tarping in the wind is no fun.
It reminds me I am still human ;)
Add rain or snow and mix well. :) Your product must be different than those other two loads, that looked to be untarped.
Yep, every load is different.
Sorry, one more question. Why the heck does aluminum need to be tarped?
There is only one reason to tarp at Maverick, it's because the receiver is paying for it to be tarped.
Flatbed drivers stay in better shape than van drivers that's for sure,
Aluminum, depending on shape and size to a machining job shop is 2.16 - 2.45 per lb.
I could of made some money O.O
Lotta work fer sure makes ya wanna drop an hook.
Na, I make more tarping than not tarping
can you use chains instead straps?
+Jesse Lopez Some products are forbidden chains due to damage they may cause the products we are moving.
where did you load/tarp this at?
+Casey Dwyer I know it was in a more southern state, that is all I can remember.
You have to tarp aluminum? Are they afraid it will rust?
+Phil Harris Salt I believe. I get paid for it so it no longer bothers me
How much
The aluminum is extrusion billets.
The manufacturer heats up the billet and runs it through the extrusion dye to make different shapes out of the aluminum.
You tarp to keep the road dirt or salt off the billets. Dirt and salt does a number on the dyes.
A Quick draw tarp kit shall do
Insert music from The Good the Bad and the Ugly.
Oh the frustration......
I love the wind soooooo much
Please tell me you get more than 25$ for that
lol
Hi Dale guess we're I'm at
America?
+Dale Clay haha man your good I'm here at little rock AR
I would have bungeed the side the wind was blowing on first, just 4 or 5 bungees
+Charles Dowdie I am always learning
no belly wraps? You see the guy in the white International he pulled out no tarp, he probably said hey look at Maverick over there tarping his load LOL!! Wheres the wind?
Between your ears.
Thank God for rubber bungee cords.
Amen brother.

Conestoga Flatbed
Near as I can figure, your load was worth just north of $35,000. (48,000 lbs right?) $.66 lb or $1,462.99 a ton. : )
Ya, I get bad thoughts every time I pass a recycling center ;)
Why they want you to tarp Aluminum is beyond me.
+johnnecron Road Salt
I would have been cussing.
Normally, but this time I thought it was funny. In the rain I am not having fun.
you have more patience than i do.
