Well, UC unis such as Berkeley and UCLA didn’t even implement any form of affirmative action. Harvard has certainly been known to employ biassed practices against Asian applicants. Do you mean that Berkeley and the other UC unis still found a way to emulate this within the system, even though they don’t take race into account in the application? How so? And honestly, MIT has a reputation for not caring much for superfluous factors and focusing on academic merit. I am shocked that even they did not accept him. I suspect there are a lot of "smart Asian applicants so what will tip the scales? Probably who their parents are or who they are related to, influence, and how much wealth they have as they are more likely to "donate" to a program that their kids is involved in. My Sis is Black and scored high on the SATs, went to school for engineering. The other school was more diverse Black students still had to study for the SATs, just like the white students. This smart young man has just been saved from $600,000 + of college debt. I've got some life behind me and at least 2/3 of the most successful people I have ever known in my life did not attend college, at least not a 4-year or Ivy League school. I wish him all the best!

Furthermore, I know so many Asian applicants who were accepted to Berkeley and who were likely far less accomplished than him. I also know Asian applicants who were less accomplished (than myself) and who received favourable responses from unis within HYPSM. There must be something more to this story…

4.42 weighted gpa, 1590 sat score. Thanks Google for stepping in. I just watched a yt video of a young man getting into every Ivy League school, but he only got an equivalent of 1490. This is getting out of hand where a near perfect score gets so many rejections.

To be fair, UC Berkeley's EECS has annually 12000 applicants. The school of Engineering has 10k people have GPA > 4.6, 4000 of them GPA > 4.8. His 4.42 is not even close. Berkeley EECS only takes 500. He is an Asian. I am an Asian but I don't think there is any race issue here.

I strongly don’t think being Asian is an issue. We’re Asian American and my son graduated from one of the school on his list. Many of my son’s buddies were Asian Americans too. In fact, his schools has a visible population of Asia Americans from across the country. Something else is missing and we won’t know why. I do know the competition to gain admission is extremely intense. Very disappointing to hear his story. UT Austin is a great top ranking STEM university. Don’t miss out a great college opportunity and experience there. I’ve been taking to some friends in the industry and admission communities, I forgot to add that he’s stats is among top tier but to think that thousands if not more than ten of thousands of applicants to these institutions, there will be handful that will meet his stats and a lot more be very well rounded. If he thinks that being top tier in software engineering work is the answer as a holistic profile, most top ranking universities are not trade schools and will not want to be one. Hence, they are seeking potential future leaders, not just a high flying young ambitious software engineer.

Exactly! I am from Palo Alto. I grew up in that environment. I know Asian people who attended Paly or Gunn HS in his and the preceding application cycle(s). Many of them received favourable responses from a number of universities and chose Berkeley, which they now attend. A few attend unis like Stanford. It is disappointing and disheartening to hear of his experience with admissions, but many comments are drawing conclusions based on inadequate information or altogether spreading ridiculous notions. Thank you for affording them a little bit of clarity, even if most don’t possess the faculties to process it. Furthermore, 18 seems like a substantial number of universities, but a lot of people who ultimately attend highly prestigious institutions received that number of rejections (or waitlists, followed by rejections). Some people who are accepted by HYP are rejected by UC Davis or the like. UCs are known for having no ‘safety school’ status, because they are so unpredictable. They also reject overqualified applicants to protect their yield rates. The most selective schools are obviously unpredictable, because they accept so few applicants that it is difficult to assess one’s chances. To account for this, a number of students (myself included) apply to many more universities, ranging from a total of 25 to 50. I applied to approximately 30. The acceptances were the ones I least expected. So were the rejections.

If our application is purely based on academic merits and not athletic based, then it is nothing more than pure academic competition - that simple. Where is the corruption? What prejudice? What bank account audit? What cell phone record? Application to top universities is just that highly competitive. My son got rejected by many of his dream schools too. We just don’t run around calling corruption. Attending a top university is not an entitlement.
